Georgla farmer, who died recently, was buried at his own request..."
The Tompkins Family of Washington County, Georgia & Related Families w Notes
ritten by Dorothy Henderson Morgan states that David W Dickson (Dave ) had a
home that sold for $45,000 after his death in 1885. The writ er of the
memoir (Victorina Tompkins Henderson) remembered the home ha d a beautiful
Italian Renaissance style fireplace. David Dickson wa s first a prominent
Sparta merchant before acquiring 266 acres of lan d and beginning farming in
1845. He is credited with devising severa l new agricultural methods by which
he was able to produce spectacula r yields of corn and cotton. Along with his
brother, Thomas, David Dic kson was long considered one of Hancock County's
most innovative plant ers. In 1860, he owned 13,000 acres of land and 144
slaves; his real e state holdings were worth $200,000 that year as opposed to
only $15,00 0 in 1850. . . . . . . . . . . The Covington Star, March 4, 1885.

was taken, David Dickson, went prepared for the hotels on the othe r side.
Says the Sparta Ishmaelite: "Mr. David Dickson, at his own req uest, was
buried in a plain pine coffin not even painted, and a pocke t knife that he
had carried for twenty years, together with tooth pic k and pocket comb, were
placed in his pockets." . . . . . . . . . . Th e Covington Star, March 11,
1885. The estate of Mr. David Dickson, wh o died a few days ago in Hancock
county, is said to be worth at leas t half a million dollars. He made it all
farming . . . . . . . . . . . Son of Thomas Dickson (1750-1827) and his wife E
lizabeth Scholars Moore (1777-1864) David W Dickson had a daughter wi th a
slave, Amanda America Dickson born 1849. The story of her lif e was recorded
in Woman of Color, Daughter of Privilege and in the mov ie "A House Divided"
to whom he left an inheritance that was contested . In his will he left
$1,250.00 each to several relatives and varyi ng amounts of money to others.
It was said that one relative that re ceived a bequest of $1,250.00 bought 200
acres of land with timber, tw o mules, a wagon and had money left over.
David never married by had a daughter by a slave- Did Marry after th Notes
