Lands of Glastonbury co-founder Ephraim Goodrich acquired from 1692-17 Notes

09 in South Glastonbury, Hartford, Connecticut. All of the land show n north
(north = left in map) of the Four-Score Acre Lots in the map a bove was at one
time part of the Treat Farm, which at one time was a f ull 310 rods in width
on both its west and east side; a total of 1,86 0 acres. Deeds dated 1692-1693
have been found involving transfer of 4 40 acres from Richard Treat
(1623-1693) to daughter Sarah Treat (1664- 1712) and husband Ephraim Goodrich,
with the remainder going to son Th omas Treat (1668-1713). However, when the
will of Thomas Treat was d rafted on June 9, 1709 and co-signed that same day
by his nephews-neig hbors Richard Goodrich and Thomas Goodrich, the 240 acre
lot designate d Richard Goodrich 1713 in the map above was in the possession
of Rich ard Goodrich, and the transfer was later formalized by a deed from hi
s father, Ephraim Goodrich, dated April 3, 1713. The reason for addi tional
Treat Farm allocations is not known, and no documentation of th e transfers
has been found other than the confirmation by Thomas Trea t found in his 1709
will.

Notes for John GOODRICH Sr.

FSID M3TL-K9N

JOHN GOODRICH was christened 21 December 1623, St. James, Bury St. Edm Notes

unds, Suffolk, England. Born, to John Goodrich (1575-1632) and Margari e Howes
(1588-1632.) He immigrated with his brother, William Goodrich , in about 1636.
He married (1) *Elizabeth Edwards, about 1645 of Weth ersfield, Hartford,
Connecticut. She died 5 July 1670, in childbirth . The children (7) were
taken to Sudbury suggesting that this was th e home of their mother’s
people. Joseph, John’s son, mentions in his w ill in 1680: “his loving
uncell Thomas Read Senior and Thomas Read Jeu ner.” He married (2) Mary
Foote, widow of John Stoddard, 4 April 1674 . They signed an ante-nuptial
contract between Mr. Goodrich and the Wi dow Stoddard, dated 4 April 1674,
explaining why and how she was to b e provided for, and why she is not
mentioned in his will. The Goodric h brothers John and William arrived in
Wethersfield, Connecticut in ab out 1636. John Goodrich first appears on the
Coll. Rec. of Connecticu t (10 November 1643); juryman, 4 Dec. 1645, and other
activities of th e town. Held lands in Wethersfield in 1644. Appointed
constable of Wet hersfield. John Goodrich and Ensign William Goodrich, his
brother, ca me from Bury St. Edmond’s, England, probably first to Watertown,
Massa chusetts, and thence to Wethersfield, Connecticut, where John held lan
ds in 1644 and William held lands in 1666. There is a tradition in th e family
that John and William were orphans and came to this country f rom South Wales
about 1644, with their mother’s brother, William Still man, and first
settled in the New Haven Colony. He was one of the fir st settlers of
Wethersfield, Connecticut, where he held lands in 1644 . First appeared on the
Coll. Rec. of Conn. (Hartford), Nov. 10, 1643 ; juryman, Dec. 4, 1645, March
4, 1646, Sept 7, 1648. In 1678 there d ied in Hegessett, Suffolk County,
England, childless, the Rev. Willia m Goodrich, a minister of the established
church, leaving a will in wh ich he bequeathed certain specified real and
personal estate to his wi fe, Rebecca Goodrich, during her natural life, with
the remainder to o ne of the sons of his brother, John Goodrich, and to one of
the sons o f his brother, William Goodrich, naming them. Rebecca, the widow
of t he Rev. William Goodrich, died in November 1698, after which Jonatha n
Goodrich, the son of John Goodrich, Sr., and John Goodrich, son of W illiam
Goodrich, were entitled to receive about £200 sterling each fro m the estate.
The Rev. William Goodrich of Hegessett, England, was pr obaby brother-in-law
of (1) John and (2) William Goodrich, of Wethersf ield, Conn. John Goodrich
died 6 April 1680, in Wethersfield, Connect icut, at age 56. Goodrich
Castle • •	Suffolk, England The basi s of the brothers John and Ens.
William Goodrich, who immigrated fro m England and settled at Wethersfield,
Conn. by the mid-1640s, was fir st published in 1889 by Lafayette Wallace Case
in "The Goodrich Famil y in Amercia." In 1953 Vol. II of "The Ancestry of Col.
John Harringto n Stevens, and his wife Frances Helen Miller," or
Stevens-Miller for s hort, was published by Winifred Lovering Holman on behalf
of her decea sed mother, Mary Lovering Holman. This work contains further
evidenc e and records concerning the Goodrich family of Bury St. Edmunds not i
ncluded by Case in 1889. These two works are incorporated in the follo wing
presentation. William Goodrich of Hessett in Suffolk, England i s the
documented beginning of what is known about the Wethersfield, Co nn. Goodrich
family. William had a wife Margaret. Stevens-Miller cite s a marriage of a
William Goodrich and Margaret Richardson at Felsha m in 1568 from the Suffolk
Marriage Index at Ipswich, and suggests thi s was probably the marriage of
William Goodrich of Hessett. "It must b e from a transcript as the earliest
extant register of Felsham begin s in 1656." There is no proof that this was
the marriage of the Wether sfield Goodrich's grandparents. Although Felsham is
the parish town ju st south of Hessett, the present writer choises not to
endorse the Ste ven-Miller conclusion. One basis of the Stevens-Miller work
needs t o be corrected. This was the assumed reason why baptism records for so
me of the descendant family in England could not be located. Stevens-M iller
more than once repeats the theme that "he was probably born in h is mother's
parish and if so, the law compelled his baptism there." A t the time Anglican
Church law required a family to attend and suppor t the parish church where
they lived, and the children to be baptize d where the parents resided. Where
the mother was born had nothing t o do with where a child was to be baptized.
William Goodrich's wife M argaret was buried at Hessett Mar. 22, 1630/1. Seven
months later Will iam Goodrich d. testate and was buried at Hessett Oct. 24,
1631. [1631 , "Sepulti, Guglielmus Gotheridge vicesimo quarto Octobris."] He
lef t the following abstracted will dated Apr. 4, 1631, proved Feb. 2, 163 1/2
at the Archdeaconry Court of Sudbury: • To son John Gooderich, al l his
houses, lands, and tenements at Hessett (spelled Hegessett in th e will), both
freehold and copyhold, and he to pay or render to Willia m's other children,
namely: • to William's son William Gooderich, £1 6 [£4 within one year,
the balance within seven years]; • to William' s dau. Elizabeth Clarke,
wife of Philip Clarke, £8 [£4 within two year s, the balance within five
years]; • to William's dau. Susan Beamond , wife of John Beamond, £8 [£4
within three years, the balance withi n six years]. • if son John did not
pay his three siblings their legac ies, then William's other children not
fully paid "maie enter into al l the said howses and hereditaments and the
same to occupie Untill h e or they shalbe fully satisfied." • Son John
Gooderich to be executo r of the will. • Witnessed by John Whyte, John
Bateley and John Taple y. Stevens-Miller provides William and Margaret
Goodrich five childre n. But as son John is the focus of the family descent
only he is conti nued in this presentation. Cemetery Both John , his 1st
wife (Eliza beth Goodrich) and 2nd wife (Mary Foote Stoddard Tracy) are all
burie d here in Wethersfield Village Cemetery in Wethersfield, Hartford Coun
ty, Connecticut, USA. Wikitree: John Goodrich, son of John Goodrich an d
Margerie Howes, was baptized at Bury St. Mary Parish in Bury St. Edm unds,
Suffolk, England on 22 Mar 1617/8.[1] Orphaned by 27 Apr 1632, J ohn and his
younger brother William Goodrich came to America in the ca re of guardian
Clement Chaplin in 1635 on the Elizabeth and Ann. [2] C lement Chaplin had
been appointed their guardian by the 14 Apr 1632 wi ll of their father John
Goodrich, and he was also appointed the keepe r of their inheritances until
each reached the age of 21. [3] Afte r a brief stay in Cambridge, MA, Clement
Chaplin brought John and Will iam Goodrich with him; first to Hartford,
Connecticut and then Wethers field, Connecticut in 1636, where John and
William no doubt were kep t busy on the 1,200 acres of land in what later

the absence of a recorded baptism for John is eq uated to "he was probably

The inference being that Stevens-Mill er did not uncover where John's mother
