- LifeSketch: CAUTION: THE THAYER FAMILY OF THORNBURY IS HIGHLY FLAWED ON THE INTERNET AND IN PUBLISHED WORKS. DO NOT CHANGE THE NAMES ON THIS PROFILE, OF PARENTS, OR OF CHILDREN BASED ON THE WORKS OF OJEDA OR HOLMAN OR ANY INTERNET SOURCE. It would be good if people doing edits here would base them on current research published by The New England Genealogical and Historical Society including their journals and books and primary sources and not on old outdated and debunked family histories. This book reflects the current state of research: Dean Crawford Smith and Melinde Lutz Sanborn, The ancestry of Eva Belle Kempton, 1878-1908 (Boston, MA: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2004) The ancestry of Henry Clay Bartlett, 1832-1892 Part 3: p 370 Earlier Research Clifford L. Stott, The Gloucestershire T(h)ayer Ancestry, The American Genealogist, (April 1998) 73:81-90; 73:209-219 Holman, Mary (Lovering), Ancestry of Charles Stinson Pillsbury and John Sargent Pillsbury . . ., 2 vols. ([Concord, N.H.]: Rumford Press, 1938) 443+ Unknown Thayer husband of Constance (____) Thayer had four children; Marriage: Just like the name of the head of this family is not actually known, the name of the mother of John and Thomas Thayer is not known with any certainty. A Constance Thayer was on buried 19 March 1561. She is generally assumed to be the mother of John and Thomas Thayer though there is no actual evidence to prove this. Children of Unknown and Constance? Thayer: Joan Thayer, born say 1533. The date is a very rough estimate based on her marriage in 1553. Married Thomas Jamys on 15 November 1553 at Thornbury, Gloucester. There is no actual evidence that she is a sister of John and Thomas other than she was married at about the time John and Thomas began having children. John Thayer, born say 1535. The date is a very rough estimate based on his first known child being born in 1558. Burial on 12 October 1584 at Thornbury, Gloucestershire, England. He and his known brother Thomas are the two heads of the Thayer families of Thornbury. Thomas Thayer, born say 1536. The date is a very rough estimate based on his first known child being born in 1538. Buried on 17 March 1573 at Thornbury, Gloucester. He and his known brother John are the two heads of the Thayer families of Thornbury. Constance Thayer, born say 1540. Married Thomas Holdbrooke on 19 February 1560 at Thornbury, Gloucestershire, England. [11] There is no actual evidence that she is a sister of John and Thomas other than she was married at about the time John and Thomas began having children. Possible, unlikely, and unproven children: William Thayer. A William Thayer was buried at Thornbury 11 February 1561. He was said to be a son in this generation by Ojeda; he was made the father of John and Thomas by Holman. There is no possible way to place him in the family based on a single burial record - he could be a father, son, uncle, or cousin to the names on this profile. Agnes Thayer. An Agneta Tawier was buried on 5 May 1571 at Thornbury. She was said by Ojeda to be another sister. It is certainly possible, but there is no possible way to place her in the family based on a single burial record - she could be a mother, sister, aunt, cousin, sister-in-law, mother-in-law, etc. Alice Thayer. An Alice Tawier was a Godmother in 1566 and 1567, and buried on 13 December 1586. at Thornbury. She was said by Ojeda to be another sister. It is certainly possible, but there is no possible way to place her in the family based on these records - she could be a mother, sister, aunt, cousin, sister-in-law, mother-in-law, etc https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Thayer-23

V (1410-) and Anne Stepheus (1414-1460.) He married (1) *Agnes Darrell about 1465; and (2) Elizabeth Unknown. Thomas Holbrook died 11 December 1503, at Glastonbury, Somerset, England, age 63. HoltonStMaryChurch LINKED TO THOMAS (DE) HOLBROOK glastonbury_abbey6 LINKED TO THOMAS DE HOLBROOK History of Thomas Holbrook (ca.1560) · 6 October 2014 · by Garry Bryant Holbrook is another old name in England, but today the name is not widely found. Three parishes bear the name; one in Suffolk, one in Derby and one in the Hundred of Norton-Ferris in Somerset. This last parish is located about seventeen miles east of Glastonbury. It is from this last county, that of Somerset, that this Holbrook family came from.1 The Holbrook family is first found in written records at the beginning of the thirteenth century. That first ancestral name is one of Rishard de Holebrookke, written upon the hundred Rolls of Suffolkshire. But at the same time the names of Roger de Holebrookke of Nottinghamshire and William de Holebroc of Lincolnshire are also found. The later we are concerened with. The Suffolk branch of the family was begun with the above mentioned Rishard or Richard, who was the son of William de Holebroc. This Richard was awarded the title of “Sir,” and was granted free warren at Tatingeston, Benetleye, Rushagh and Foxhole in county Suffolk and that of Senges in Norfolk on the 16th of June in 1267. Sir Richard de Holebrookke was also the custodian of the King’s castles in twenty different counties and was appointed steward between the bridges of Oxford and Stamford on the 16th of November in 1275. One year later in these same two counties he was made Escheator. Then two years later in 1278 on the 29th day of September, he was one of the knights in attendance to the homage of King Alexander of Scotland to the Parliament at Westminster. Sir Richard held many other titles of trust and honor to his King. Perhaps the highest was that of steward to the King, of which he was appointed on the 30th of May in 1285 A.D. He died on 27 February 1291. Sir Richard de Holebrookke was married to Isabella and they had a son, Sir John de Holbrok. Sir John was one of the King’s valiant knights and he was summoned to defend the coast against the French on the 30th of August 1295, and again against the Scots six years later. Sir John held as a knights fee several estates in England. One at Freston and another at Holebrook, both in Suffolk. These two lands are mentioned in his Knight’s Fee for on the 6 of December in 1306, his widow and two others received these mentioned fees. This widow was named Alice, who was probably of noble birth for she received an invitation to the wedding of Elizabeth, daughter of King Edward I, upon her marriage to the Count of Flanders. Alice died on the 8th of December in 1309, leaving a vast estate, of which most of it was located in Suffolk. The children of Sir John de Holbrok and his wife Alice was a son John de Holebrok who died on the 12th of October 1316. His wife was Petronilla and they had a son Thomas. Thomas de Holebrok named his son after his father. This John de Holbrok was a principal in a pleading at Trinity, concerning a presentation to the church at Holton in Suffolk County in 1382. At this point in time the records with Holbrook information are non-existant. But several interesting circumstantial evidence exist to point that more than likely the Somerset Holbrooks descend from the family at Suffolk. ●Several generations after Sir Richard de Holebrookke, the names of Thomas and Isabella are to be found in the family. ●Holbrook Parish where the family was seated at, is half way between Wimborne Minster, county Dorset, and Glastonbury, county Somerset. At Wimborne Minster was a Thomas Holbroke, who’s daughter was Isabella. ●Cut into a marble monument in the Luc- combe Church in Somerset county is to be found a Stawell family arms impaling the arms of Holbrooke. This monument was in memory of one of it’s reverends, that of Reverend Thomas Stawell (1648-1732) and his wife Elizabeth Holbrooke (1668-1731). Stawell preached here for forty-three years. This Holbrooke arms pictured on this mon- ument is the same as the one issued to Sir Richard de Holebrookke. In England one cannot use an heraldic arm unless of direct descent. ●A close alliance existed between the Hol brook and Tylye families as early as 1379, when a William Holbrook made William Tylye of Glastonbury Abbey, his heir. Dur ing the 1500 and 1600s there were numer ous Holbrook-Tylye marriages, including the marriage of Elizabeth Holbrook and William Tylye in 1611. This Elizabeth was sister to the American immigrant. In Somerset County, the Holbrook family attended to the Church of Saint John the Baptist. Where between the years of 1428 and 1438 a Thomas Holbrook was the Church Warden. Thomas Holbrook (c.1560) The beginning of the American Holbrooks starts with Thomas Holbrook, who married Constans Thayer at Thornbury, Gloucester County, on the 19th of February in 1560. This town of Thornbury is only a few miles north of Glastonbury. It is not certain that this couple are the parents of William Holbrook of Glastonbury, but the first son born to William was named Thomas, thus many researchers believe them to be the parents of William. - Father: Robert DE HILTON III
- Mother: Nigel de NEVILLE
- Birth: 1120, Prestatyn, Flintshire, Wales
- Also known as: Bleiddyn de Hulton
- LifeSketch: «b»Biography«/b» The British History Online site states that it was Blethin's sons who were the first of the family to be in Lancashire after the family's estate at Prestatyn, Wales was taken in 1167. The implication of this is that (1) Blethin never left Wales and (2) his sons were adult in 1167. «b»1167 Expulsion from Wales«/b» This family is supposed to have been among the faithful vassals of Robert Banastre expelled from Wales in 1167. The first Lancashire members of this family were Iorwerth and Madoc, sons of Bleiddyn, faithful vassals of Robert Banastre, expelled from Wales about 1167. «b»Issue«/b» Blethyn de Hulton had two sons 1.) Jorwerth or Yarwritt de Hulton, born, say, 1159. Bleythin was the father of Jorveth, alias Yarwit de Hulton, who flourished in the reigns of Richard I (1189-1199) and John (1199-1216), and obtained from the latter a grant by charter of the town of Penelton, in Lancashire, in exchange for other lands which the king, when Earl of Morton, had given him. The charter for Penelton, coming from John could not have been earlier than 1199. While Iorveth "flourished" in the reign of Richard (1189-1199), he likely was of age when forced to leave Wales in 1167, so make him aged 22 in 1167, hence born, say, 1145. Jorveth died in 1215. Certainly Iorwerth and Madoc, sons of Bleiddyn, held lands in Hulton before 1200. 2.) Madoc, born, say, 1147. Certainly Iorwerth and Madoc, sons of Bleiddyn, held lands in Hulton before 1200. «b»Hulton family of Hulton «/b»The Hulton family of Hulton lived and owned land in Lancashire for more than eight hundred years from the late-12th to the late-20th centuries. The family took its name from the three townships surrounding their Hulton Park Estate, Over, Middle and Little Hulton. «b»Origins«/b» The first family members to live in Lancashire were Iorwerth and Madoc the sons of Bleiddyn who left North Wales in about 1167 after Owain Gwynedd expelled Norman and English settlers. Iorwerth, was granted by charter the town of Pendleton by King John in 1199. The family expanded its influence and in 1304 Richard de Hulton held parts of Hulton, Ordsall, Flixton and Heaton. He built the first Hulton Hall, establishing the family seat in Hulton Park which covered 325 acres of parkland approximately five kilometres south-west of Bolton. Richard's grandson, also Richard squandered much of the family's estate and died in poverty without an heir. «b»15th-17th century «/b»The Hultons regained and expanded their estate spent during the 15th and 16th centuries often through marriage. In 1485 a marriage was arranged between the infants, Adam Hulton and Alice Hulton, daughter of John Hulton of Farnworth. In 1521, Henry VIII arbitrated a dispute that arose between the two branches of the family, ruling that lands in Westhoughton, Harpurhey, Denton, Openshaw and Gorton should be assigned to Adam and Alice's male heirs. From this time this branch of the Hultons became much prominent than their namesakes in Farnworth. The Hultons worshipped at Deane Church and some are buried in its Hulton Chapel. They were devout Catholics, and, in common with many Lancastrians, kept the old faith during the Reformation but remained allied to the sovereign. William Hulton joined the association of Lancashire magistrates committed to defending Elizabeth I in the Anglo-Spanish War in 1585. His successor and grandson, Adam Hulton converted to Protestantism, and developed connections with Puritan families in the area. The family was involved in the Civil War of 1642-51 when Adam summoned his tenants to Parliament's cause and may have taken an active role in the conflict. A letter addressed to George Rigby of Peel, Clerk of the Peace for Lancashire in January 1643 relates that Rigby's brother-in-law, 'Captaine Hilton', was kept prisoner in Chester Castle after acting as a captain in the Parliamentary army. 'Captaine Hilton' could be Adam or his brother Edward. «b»17th-19th century«/b» Adam's son, William, inherited the estate as the Hulton's wealth and influence was increasing. He represented Clitheroe in the Convention Parliament of 1660 that invited Charles II to return to the throne, and was the only family member to sit in the House of Commons. He built the second Hulton Hall. The Hultons occupied positions of political influence during the 18th and 19th centuries. From 1767-75, Henry Hulton of the Hampshire branch of the family was the First Commissioner of Customs in the American Colonies in Boston and responsible for collecting taxes levied on the American population which they denounced as 'taxation without representation'. Hulton was reviled and attacked and at the onset of the American Revolution returned to England in 1776. William Hulton was appointed High Sheriff of Lancashire in 1811. After a cotton mill in Westhoughton was torched by Luddites in 1812, Hulton ordered the execution of four of the suspects, one of them reported to be twelve years old. Hulton was a magistrate who dealt harshly with the working-class crime and social unrest. On 16 August 1819. 60,000 pro-democracy reformers gathered in St Peter's Field in Manchester to listen to the radical orator, Henry Hunt. Hulton, chairman of the Lancashire and Cheshire magistrates, a body set up to deal with the growing problem of civil unrest was in Manchester to ensure order was maintained. Observing from a nearby house, Hulton issued an arrest warrant for Hunt and his associates, but was advised that military assistance was required. He called on the local yeomanry to arrest the radicals and disperse the meeting. The yeomanry attacked the crowd indiscriminately. It is estimated that 18 were killed and 600 to 700 injured. The event became known as the 'Peterloo Massacre'. Home Secretary Lord Sidmouth conveyed King George III's 'great satisfaction' at Hulton's 'prompt, decisive and efficient measures', but among the working classes he was known as 'old Peterloo', his reputation was forever sullied. In 1820 he turned down a Tory seat in Parliament, while in 1841 Hulton and his family were attacked in Bolton during an election campaign demonstrating how the massacre had influenced public opinion. «b»Coal «/b»The Hultons accrued much wealth from the coal under their estate. It was mined from the 1550s, but its worth became clear as industrialisation took hold in the late-18th and early-19th centuries. William Hulton, who inherited the family estate in 1800, was responsible for the major developments that exploited the coal reserves in Hulton Park. He was a principal supporter of the Bolton and Leigh Railway, which transported the Hulton's coal to markets in Bolton, Manchester and Liverpool. The railway pioneer, George Stephenson, stayed at Hulton Hall for three months while overseeing the railway's construction. The line was opened for traffic on 1 August 1828, with 40,000 people in attendance to witness what the Bolton Chronicle described as an 'interesting and novel spectacle'. The Bolton and Leigh Railway was the first railway line to operate in Lancashire. In 1858, William Hulton founded the Hulton Colliery Company in partnership with Harwood Walcot Banner. Their partnership was dissolved ten years later and from 1868 onwards the company traded under the Hulton name. The Hultons gave up control of the coal mines in 1886 after the Hulton Colliery Company was founded. In December 1910 a defective safety lamp caused an explosion in the Pretoria Pit killing 344 men and boys. It was the worst coal mining disaster in Lancashire, and the third worst in Britain. By 1947, the Hulton coal empire could claim to be the largest in Lancashire, but it gradually diminished in the second half of the 20th century due to a nationwide fall in demand. «b»19th-20th century «/b»In the late-19th and 20th centuries the Hulton family fortunes gradually declined. However, in 1902 William Wilbraham Blethyn Hulton was made a baronet for services to Lancashire. The second baronet, Sir William Rothwell Hulton, was the last patriarch to live in Hulton Hall before moving into an estate cottage towards the end of the First World War. Hulton Hall fell into a state of disrepair before being demolished in 1958. The fourth and last baronet, Sir Geoffrey Alan Hulton served as an officer in the Royal Navy Marines on board HMS Repulse during the Second World War. He was held prisoner by the Japanese for three and a half years, during which he 'lived in the depths of squalor'. Geoffrey Hulton's death without heir in 1993 signalled the end of the Hulton dynasty.
