- LifeSketch: Ship's manifest of the "Increase" shows Thomas, his wife Frances (Moody) Kilbourn, son John and four daughters made the Atlantic passage in April of 1635. He is listed as a husbandman or farmer, and was one of the founding party of Wethersfield. He was killed by Indians 5 years after moving to the New World. Thomas kilborne (1578-1639) & Francis Moody (1595-1650) immigrant The history of the Kilbourn family in New England starts with Thomas and his wife Frances Moody. Thomas' father was John Kilbourn who was born in 1548 [we have his birth in 1535] and died about 1591.Thomas was christened, May 8, 1578, in Wood Ditton [we have the village as Croydon], Cambridgeshire, England, was married to Frances, Sept. 5, 1604 in Houlton, Suffolk, England [we have Moulton, Suffolk, England; there is no place called Houlton]. They came with some their children in the Increase in 1635 he is listed as being age 55 [assuming the christening date reflects his approximate birthdate, his actual age would be 57] and Frances age 50 at the time. It is believed that at one or two of their children came earlier to prepare for their coming. It is believed that Thomas moved to Wethersfield when nearly 60 years old [61 if the christening date approximates his birthdate]. Thomas died before Dec. 25, 1640. He was supposed to have been a Church Warden at St. Mary's Church in Wood-Ditton, England. in 1632 and the family baptism records are said to be there still. Frances was the daughter of George Moody and Margaret Chenery. She was christened in Wood Ditton, Oct. 11, 1584, and died in Wethersfield Nov. 1650, her will is dated the 13th of that month and proved June 25, 1651. Inventory was worth 349-08-04 pounds and divided out to daug. Margt. Law and grandchild, Jonathan Law; to daug. Lydia Howard; daug. Mary Root; daug. Frances Ufford; to grand child Elizabeth Jennsion; and to son John who was appointed sole executor of the will. "In England, Thomas Kilbourne was a church warden in his native parish of St. Mary's. When he arrived in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, he probably did not find the religious atmosphere to his liking. Within the year[this makes the christening date wrong because he was supposedly 60 years of age], he moved his family to Wethersfield, Connecticut. Wethersfield is [one of] the oldest organized town[s] in Connecticut. Thomas Kilbourne was one of its first settlers. He is reportedly the first person to build a home there. His home was on the west side of Broad Street. He served as juror, grand juror, and deputy of the town. It is believed that Thomas Kilbourn met his demise on April 23, 1637 [we have his death as September 5, 1640, which renders this tale moot], in Wethersfield, just two years after his arrival in the U.S [Massachusetts Bay]. Two daughters of Thomas Swayne, another colonist, were captured and carried off by Pequot Indians. Before they got very far, they were confronted by a rescue party. Six of the men were massacred. Thomas Kilburne owned land adjacent to the river in the approximate location of the massacre, and it is supposed that he was one of the rescuers who was murdered. The massacre led to a bloody battle between the British and the Pequot Indians, known as the Pequot War. The tribe had more than 2,000 when the English settlers arrived. They were reduced to only a few hundred."--------Source:RootsWeb WorldConnect: Thomas Kilbourne, by Sharon Freeland http://world What Cuttler has to say about the Kilbourns on in his New England Families Genealogical and Memorial Vol III, page 1232: This name has been variously spelled Kilborn, Kilbon, Kilburn, Kilbourn and Kilbourne- Thomas Kilburn, the immigrant ancestor, was born in the parish of Wood Ditton [we have the village as Croydon], Cambridge, England, where he was baptized May 8, 1578. He was a member of the Church of England, and warden of his parish church in 1632. He and his wife came to this country in 1635 with their younger children, embarking at London, April 15, with Margaret, Lydia, Marie and Frances. They settled in Wethersfield, Connecticut, where he died before 1639 [we have his death as September 5, 1640]. His wife died in 1650, but the records show that her estate was appraised at three hundred and forty-nine pounds, eight shillings, four pence. The family has a coat-of-arms in England. He married Frances______. The history of my Moody family in New England starts with Frances Moody, who was married Thomas Kilbourn, they came to New England in 1635, settling in Wethersfield Conn. Frances was sister to John and Elizabeth Moody. Elizabeth married John Pratt of Wood Ditton, Cambridge. In 1633, her brother John was in Roxbury, Mass. and by 1639, in Hartford, Conn. Frances was christened Oct. 11, 1584 in Wood Ditton, Cambridge, England and died Nov. 10, 1650 in Wethersfield. Her parents were George Moody, sone of Richard Moody b. Sept. 1560 and d. Aug. 23 1607, and Margaret (Margery) Chenery, who was b. abt 1560 in Moulton, Suffolk, England and d. Jan. 25, 1602. I have also seen Margaret with surname of Newce. Also of note is an article in the from Vol: LXXX. 21 of NEGHR - July 1926, page 323, concering the "Genealogiecal Research in England" of the Moody family. In it is this footnote:

FIRST RESIDENCE: Wethersfield... ESTATE: ...In her will, dated 13 November 1650 and proved 1 June 1651, "Francis Killburne of Wethersfield, ... in lieu of forty shillings she borrowed of Richard Law ... have given him five pounds to be paid within a year or two" and bequeathed to "my daughter Margerit, the wife of Richard Lawe, my old cloth gown, and to my grandchild Jonathan Lawe five shillings"; to "my daughter Lydia, the wife of Robert Haward, five pounds as the full of her portion I promised upon marriage with my daughter"; to "my daughter Meary, the wife of John Roote, five pounds as the full of her portion I promised upon marriage with my daughter"; to "my daughter Francis, the wife of Thomas Ufford, ten pounds in full of her portion promised in marriage with my daughter"; to "my grandchild Elizabeth Geneson," clothing; to "my three daughters to be divided amongst them, Lydia, Mary & Francis," clothing and linen; to "my son John," three shirts, and he to be sole executor [Hartford Court Records 2:15 (probate side); Manwaring 1:133]. On 5 December 1650, "there was exhibited into the court the will and inventory of the widow Killburne. The court not being satisfied about the proof of the will, ordered that John Killburne should for the present administer till they shall take further order about the same" [Hartford Court Records 2:16 (court side)]. On 1 June 1651, the "court approves of the last will and testament of the widow Killburne deceased and doth confirm John [Killburne administrator]" [Hartford Court Records 2:25 (court side)]. BIRTH: Baptized Wood Ditton, Cambridgeshire, 8 May 1578, son of John Kilborne. DEATH: By 3 September 1640 [CCCR 1:445]. MARRIAGE: Moulton, Suffolk, 5 September 1604 Frances Moody, daughter of George Moody [NEHGR 80:3 19, 323-24]. CHILDREN: i. ANNE KILBOURN, b. say 1605; named in the 5 August 1607 will of her grandfather, George Moody [NEHGR 80:316-17, citing PCC 87 Hudleston]; no further record. (In accord with the custom of the time, she may have been baptized in Moulton, the home parish of her mother.) ii. MARGARET KILBOURN, bp. Wood Ditton 23 September 1607; m. by about 1636 Richard Law (eldest known child d. "9 January 1711/2 in the 75th or 76th year of his age" [MilfordVR Barbour 112]). iii. THOMAS KILBOURN, bp. Wood Ditton 30 November 1609; possibly the "Thomas Kilborne," aged 24, and "Elizabeth his wife," aged 20, who were enrolled at Ipswich on 30 April 1634 as passengers for New England on the Elizabeth [Hotten 280]; otherwise no further record. iv. GEORGE KILBOURN, bp. Wood Ditton 12 February 1611/2; no further record. (He was not the George Kilbourn who had settled at Roxbury and Rowley [Hale, House 653; Sarah Stone Anc 95].) v. ELIZABETH KILBOURN, bp. Wood Ditton 12 May 1614; m. by 1637 ROBERT JENNISON {1636, Watertown} [Dawes-Gates 1:369-71]. vi. LYDIA KILBOURN, bp. Wood Ditton 14 July 1616; m. by about 1641 Robert Howard (eldest known child b. about 1641 [Ackley-Bosworth 14-15]). vii. MARY KILBOURN, b. about 1619 (aged 16 on 15 April 1635 [Hotten 66]; on 14 April 1669 and 14 July 1669, John Winthrop Jr. treated "Root Mary 50 years wife of John of Farmington [WMJ 900, 937]); m. by about 1639 John Root (eldest known child, son John, m. on 18 October 1664 [Savage 3:572]). viii. FRANCES KILBOURN, bp. Wood Ditton 9 September 1621; m. by 1650 Thomas Ufford, son of Thomas UFFORD {1632, Roxbury}. [GMB 3:1857-58]. ix. JOHN KILBOURN, bp. Wood Ditton 29 September 1624; m. (1) by 1651 Naomi ___ (eldest known child b. 15 January 1651 [/2] [WetVR Barbour 190, citing LR1:18]; "Naomey," w. John Kilburne, d. Wethersfield 1 October 1659 [WetVR Barbour 190, citing LR1:39]); m. (2) about 1662 Sarah Brunson, daughter of John Brunson [TAG 38:199-204]. ASSOCIATIONS: JOHN MOODY {1633, Roxbury} [GMB 2:1273-76] was a brother of Frances (Moody) Kilburne [NEHGR 80:313-27]. Their sister Elizabeth Moody married John Pratt of Wood Ditton [NEHGR 80:324], but he was not the immigrant of that name to Cambridge and Hartford [TAG 64:11; GMB 3:1507-10]. COMMENTS: According to her age on the passenger list, Mary Kilbourn was born about 1619. William Ridgwell, vicar of Wood Ditton, was buried there on 2 May 1618, and no further parish register entries were made until 29 July 1620, thus explaining the lack of a baptismal record for Mary. (Although there are some discrepancies between the baptismal records at Wood Ditton and the ages given on the passenger list, there is no doubt of the identification, and the discrepancies have no material impact on the analysis of this family's chronology.)... Mary Walton Ferris cogently argued that the "grandchild Elizabeth Geneson" named in the will of Frances (Moody) Kilbourn was daughter of her daughter Elizabeth, who had married soon after arrival in New England Robert Jennison of Watertown [Dawes-Gates 1:369-71]. BIBLIOGRAPHIC NOTE: In 1845 Payne Kenyon Kilboume published an account of this family ["The Family Memorial. A History and Genealogy of the Kilbourn Family, in the United States and Canada from the Year 1635 to the Present Time" (Hartford 1845)] and in 1856 he brought out a much-expanded version ["The History and Antiquities of the Name and Family of Kibourn, (in Its Varied Orthography.)" (New Haven 1856)]. In 1931 Mary Walton Ferris treated the family [Dawes-Gates 2:508-14]. In 1952 Donald Lines Jacobus treated the family of this immigrant, including much detail on the family of his wife [Hale, House 652-56]. In 1960 Jacobus prepared another brief account of the family [Ackley -Bosworth 16-18]."

MIGRATION: 1635 on the Increase (on 15 April 1635, "Tho[mas] Kilborne," aged 55, husbandman, "uxor Francis Kilborne," aged 50, "Margaret Kilborne," aged 23, "Lyddia Kilborne," aged 22, "Marie Kilborne," aged 16, "Francis Kilborne," aged 12, and "Jo[hn] Kilborne," aged 10, were enrolled at London as passengers for New England on the Increase [Hotten 66]). The inventory of the estate of Frances Kilborne, taken 3 December 1650... [Hartford Court Records 2:16 (probate side)]. At the Waterbeach court of 14 April 1563 John Ballard recorded the surrender to him by John Kilborn of 4 messuages, 15 acres of land, 3 fodderfens in Chyteringe,[139] and 4 commons of turf, 20 acres and 3 rods of land in Waterbeach fields, and one other fodderfen in Chyteringe called St. Katherine's Pittance, for the use of William Serjeant and Elizabeth his wife, for which the fine was 53 shillings and 4 pence.[140] At the court of 17 September 7 Elizabeth [1565] John Kylborne was distrained [compelled] to be present at the next court.[141] However, there is no evidence in the Cole transcript that he appeared then (26 May 9 Elizabeth [1567]), and it seems evident that John Kylborne had removed from Waterbeach, perhaps in 1563 when he surrendered his lands in the manor. Edward Kilborne, his second son and third child, was christened at Wood Ditton[142] in 1567. The family were associated with that parish until their emigration to America in 1634. In the Subsidy of 10 Elizabeth [1568] John Kilborne, husbandman, was assessed at Wood Ditton for the value of £ 7 in goods, for which he paid 5 shillings 10 pence[143], and in the Subsidy of 13/14 Elizabeth [1571/2] John Kilborne, yeoman, paid 10 shillings on a valuation of £ 10 in goods, the highest in the parish.[144] In 1572 also occurred the marriage at Wood Ditton of Agatha Collins and Roger Borrowdale, the significance of which will presently be apparent. The Feet of Fines for Hilary Term 1574 records the agreement between John Kilburne, querant, and Roger Borroughdale and Agatha his wife, deforciants, concerning the moiety of a quarter part of three messuages, two gardens, one orchard, 28 acres of land, 6 acres of meadow and 5 acres of pasture in Woodditton, Dytton Cames, Dytton Valons and Saxton, in recognition of which John paid Roger and Agatha £ 40 sterling.[145] John Kelhorne was the supervisor of the will of Walter Howlett of Wood Ditton, probated in the Consistory Court of Ely on 30 October 1578.[146] John retained his father's lands in Trumpington, or at least an interest in them, for at the court held there 6 October 20 Elizabeth [1578] he was cited for non-attendance.[147] John Kylborne's name occurs for the last time as a tenant in Trumpington in a badly-damaged roll of 1582, when Edward Kylborne was admitted to the lands formerly held by copy by John Kylborne.[148] This transfer is recorded in the Feet of Fines, Michaelmas Term 1582,[149] wherein Edward Kylborn, querant, and John Kylborn senior and Anne his wife, and John Kylborn junior and Etheldreda his wife, deforciants, agree concerning 2 messuages, 2 gardens, 48 acres of land, 4 acres of meadow, 6 acres of pasture and 2 acres of wood in Trumpington, in recognition of which Edward gave John and Anne, and John and Etheldreda £ 40 sterling.[150] John Kylborn bought further land near Wood Ditton as the Feet of Fines, Hilary Term 1587, contains the agreement between John Kilburne and Anne his wife and Andrew Kilburne, querants, and Thomas Stuteville, Esq., and Anne his wife, deforciants, concerning 7 acres of wood in Cheaveley or Chevelye [Cheveley, Cambs.], in recognition of which John and Anne and Andrew paid Thomas and Anne 40 sterling.[151] This Andrew must have been 10. AndrewB Kilborne of Hauxton, the brother of 11. EdwardB Kylbourn to whom the Trumpington lands were sold. John Kilborne, describing himself as "of Saxon in the Parish of Woodditton in the County of Cambridge yeoman," made his will 23 September 1591; it was probated in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury 22 November 1591.[152] The will made elaborate provisions for the distribution of the estate. The tenor of the document seems to convey family tension, perhaps generated by strains between children of more than one mother, and the probable chronology of the births indicates two wives. The following is a paraphrase: John the eldest son received the lands in "Stragwell" [Stradishall], Suffolk, purchased from Jeffrey and Francis Paske. Wife Anne was to have for life a long list of copy and freehold properties in Saxon, Ditton and Cheveley in trust for their sons Thomas and Andrew; the will specified their division after Anne's death. Anne was to "keep, bring up and maintain" these two sons and to pay each of them 40 shillings a year during her lifetime. Should the sons die before the age of 24, leaving no issue, the bequests were to be divided among their sisters Elizabeth, Agatha and Margaret. In addition, the sons Thomas and Andrew were each to receive £ 20 at the age of 21. Daughters Agatha and Margaret were each bequeathed £ 50 as well as personalty at the age of 24. The children of daughter Johann [Joan] were bequeathed £ 10 owed to testator by Joan's husband, Walter Fison. Two cows were bequeathed to the poor of Wood Ditton, the profit from which to the amount of 6 shillings 8 pence was to be paid by the widow Anne to the churchwardens yearly on Ash Wednesday, and the "house in which I now dwell shall be charged with the rent of the two kine for ever." Should the widow die, the trustees for these provisions were to be Thomas Jackson and William Wimmarke. The supervisors of the will were Walter Howlett and John Martyn, each to receive 2 shillings 4 pence for his trouble. Should any of the family prove to be contentious and bring suit over the provisions of the will, he was to be completely cut off from it. The widow Anne was named executrix; the witnesses were Walter Howlett, John Martyn and William Wymarke. The register of Wood Ditton shows the burial of John Kilborne on 30 October 1591, and on 29 May 1592 the widow Anne Kilborne married there Walter Howlett, supervisor of John's will.[153] Payne Kenyon Kilbourne[154] printed a letter from J. Walker, Vicar of Wood Ditton, dated May 31, 1855: "... I send you some extracts from a tattered and imperfect book in our parish chest. It contains, principally, annual accounts of the poor, in the 17th century; but on a few leaves at the beginning there are memoranda of the annual distribution of gifts made by charitable individuals to the poor. The annual donors were Walter Pratt, the Elder, for two gifts of twenty shillings and ten shillings respectively and John Kilburne a gift of six shillings and eight pence. Entry No. 1 - (being the first writing in the book as it now exists:) 1617.- Mem., that the yerely gift of John Kilborne of six shillings eight pence was given by the hands of Thomas Ryle and William Bredrake, church wardens, the xv day of March Anno Domini 1617. There are similar memoranda nearly every year from the above date to 1629. Then comes the following entry: Memorand.- That the yearly gift of six shillings eight pence of John Kilburne was given by the hands of John Pratt[155] and John Martyn, church wardens of Wood Ditton, Anna Domini 1630: by the hands of Thomas Kilburne and Thomas Pratt, Anno domini 1632: and by the hands of John Siser and William Pratt, the 23d day of March Anna Domini, 1633. There are similar memoranda separately for the years 1635, 1638, and 1639..." When this book was examined at the Cambridgeshire Record Office where it now is kept the earlier pages had vanished.[156] The book now contains records of the payments of this charity for 1626 through 1629, 1632, 1633, 1635, 1638 and 1639, and so it continued for at least 48 years after the death of John Kilborne. In view of the terms in which John Kilborne mentioned his children John and Joan and the evident differences in their ages from the younger children, it is possible that the first two were of a prior marriage and that only the obviously favored younger children were by Anne.[157] Issue: i. John Kilbourne, later of Chircham (Chettisham), Ely. ii. Joan Kilborne, married 3 October 1574[158] Walter Fisson. She was born ca. 1555; issue living in 1591. iii. Edward Kilborne, christened Wood Ditton 28 December 1567. Probably the first child of John and Anne. Died young. iv. Agatha Kilborne, christened Wood Ditton 11 September 1568. Living, unmarried, in 1591. v. Ellen Kilborne, christened Wood Ditton 3 February 1569/70; buried there 3 February 1569/70. vi. Margaret Kilborne, christened Wood Ditton 22 January 1576/7. Living, unmarried, in 1591. vii. Thomas Kilborne, christened Wood Ditton 8 May 1578. viii. Andrew Kilborne, christened Wood Ditton 9 June 1579. Living 1591. NOTES 139. Chittering was fen common pasture, located a few miles north of Waterbeach and beyond the former Abbey of Denny. It was known by this name by 1420 and was principally mown for hay. It was reckoned as from 300 to 400 acres in the early 17th century. ("VCR Cambridge," vol 9, p. 249). Land defined as "fodderfens" indicated the right to mow hay for cattle. Fodderfens in Waterbeach were mostly in defined areas in Chittering (ibid., 250). 140. British. Library. Add. Ms. 5973 (Cole Manuscripts), f. 158v 141. Ibid. 142. In 1960 Jacobus prepared another brief account of the family [Ackley -Bosworth 16-18]." March, 1658-9. Will proven. Page 15-16. Kilboum, Mrs. Frances, Wethersfield. Invt. £349-08-04.
