- Mother: Unknown Spouse of Ceawlin of WESSEX
- Birth: ABT 562, Kingdom of Wessex, Anglia
- Title Of Nobility: King of Gewisse, BET 597 AND 611, Kingdom of Wessex
- LifeSketch: From Wikipedia- Ceolwulf (died c. 611) was a King of Wessex. At that early date the West Saxons were called the Gewisse, and in his Dictionary of National Biography entry he is given the title "king of the Gewisse".[1] According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle he reigned from 597 to 611 and the Annals of St Neots also allot him fourteen years. The West Saxon Genealogical Regnal List gives him a reign of seventeen years, but in the view of Barbara Yorke this is probably an error.[2] Ceolwulf was the son of Cutha or Cuthwulf and the grandson of Cynric, and succeeded his brother Ceol. According to the Chronicle he was a powerful ruler who "continually fought and contended either against the English, or the Britons, or the Picts, or the Scots", but it is unlikely that he fought against the Picts or the Scots. His only recorded battle was against the South Saxons in 607, probably for control of the Isle of Wight and south Hampshire, but he probably laid the foundations for West Saxon expansion against the British and Saxon peoples of the south and west. He may have begun to construct a regional overlordship among the groups who comprised the West Saxons.[3] It is not certain whether his successor, Cynegils, was his son or the son of his brother Ceol.[4

- Title (Nobility): Earl of Buckingham
- Fact: Battle Roll of Abbey Volume 1 - 3
- LifeSketch: Walter Giffard, Lord of Longueville, Normandy (a.k.a. 'Giffard of Barbastre'), was a Norman baron, a Tenant-in-chief in England, a Christian knight who fought against the Saracens in Spain during the Reconquista and was one of the 15 or so known companions of William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Life Walter[a] was the son of Osbern de Bolbec, Lord of Longueville by a sister of Gunnor, Duchess of Normandy.[b] As such he was first cousin twice removed of William the Conqueror.[1] From the mid 1040s Walter's name appears among the loyal supporters of William the Conqueror.[2] Walter was at the Battle of Mortemer and was among the Norman barons who surprised and defeated Counts Odo and Renaud leading the French contingent attacking Normandy from the east.[3] In particular, he and another great vassal Robert of Eu encountered Odo's army encamped in the village of Mortemer with no sentries and the soldiers were drunk.[4] The Normans attacked the French while they slept, most being either killed or taken prisoner.[4] While Odo himself escaped, when King Henry I learned of the fate of his brother Odo's army he promptly withdrew his remaining forces and left Normandy.[4] In 1054 Walter was in charge of maintaining the siege of Arques castle, against William of Talou, who had rebelled against the Conqueror.[5] Like many other Norman and French knights during the eleventh and early twelfth centuries, Walter served as a Christian knight in Spain (c. 1064-65) against the Saracens.[6] His epithet le Barbastre[c] was earned when he took part in the Siege of Barbastro, an undertaking sanctioned by Pope Alexander II against the Moors in 1064, one of the more famous exploits of that time.[6] By the time of the Conquest, Walter had returned to Normandy bearing a gift of the King of Spain for Duke William, a magnificent war-horse. The same Spanish war-horse duke William called for on the morning of the Battle of Hastings.[6] The Spanish king in question was in all probability Sancho Ramírez of Aragon (1063–94) who was known for making friends and recruiting knights and soldiers from Northern France.[7] Walter was also one of the first, if not the first in England to go on pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, which he did after the siege of Barbastro and before returning to Normandy.[7] In early January 1066, after Duke William received news of the crowning of Harold Godwinson as king of England, he called together a meeting, the Council of Lillebonne, that included six of his key magnates, Walter Giffard being one of them.[8] After telling them of his plan to invade England and take the crown for himself they supported him fully but suggested he should call a meeting of all his vassals, which William did.[8] In the preparation stage for the Battle of Hastings, Walter was one of the Norman magnates who provided ships for William's invasion fleet. In his case, he provided thirty.[9] Walter was one of two who, having been offered the privilege of carrying William's standard in the battle, respectfully refused. Although by this time an older warrior with white hair, he wanted both hands free to fight.[10] As a reward for his participation, Walter was granted the feudal barony of Long Crendon,[11] comprising 107 manors, 48 of which were in Buckinghamshire,[12] of which the caput was at Long Crendon, Buckinghamshire. The date of his death is not recorded, but his son Walter succeeded him before 1085.[13] Family Walter was married to Ermengarde, daughter of Gerard Flaitel.[13][12] Walter and Ermengarde were the parents of: Walter Giffard, 1st Earl of Buckingham.[13] William Giffard, Bishop of Winchester.[14][15] Rohese Giffard (d. aft. 1113), married Richard fitz Gilbert, Lord of Clare. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Giffard,_Lord_of_Longueville https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gautier_Ier_Giffard http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/normacre.htm GAUTHIER Giffard (-before 1085). ----------------------------------------------------------- DOMESDAY PEOPLE, A Prosopography of Persons Occurring in English Documents 1066-1166, K.S.B. Her maternal grandfather was Gerard Fleitel. Walter Giffard was the lord of Longueville-sur-Scie in upper Normandy. Marriage Giffard was the wife of Richard fitzGilbert, the son of Gilbert, Count of Brionne. Domesday Book records him as the eighth richest landowner in England, with lands centered on two locations – lands in Kent and Surrey grouped around Tonbridge and lands in Essex and Suffolk grouped around Clare. Their children were 1. Roger, 2. Gilbert, 3. Walter, 4. Robert, 5. Richard, 6. Godfrey, 7. Rohese (or Rohais), and 8. Adelisa. Roger received the Norman lands after Richard fitzGilbert's death, Gilbert received his father's English lands, Walter was given a Welsh lordship by King Henry I of England, and Robert was given lands around London by King Henry I. Richard became a monk at Bec Abbey and was later abbot of Ely Abbey. The last son, Godfrey, is known only from his burial at Clare. Rohais married Eudo Dapifer and Adelisa married Walter Tirel. A daughter of Richard, who is unnamed, is said to have married Ralph de Fougères, but it is not known whether this refers to another marriage for either Rohais or Adelisa or if this is a third daughter. Some of the children were born before 1066, as a gift to Jumièges Abbey in 1066 mentions the souls of their children. Landowner Giffard occurs in Domesday Book as a landowner in her own right. Richard died between 1085 and 1087, as his son Gilbert witnesses a charter of King William II of England in that year. Rohese survived him and was still alive in 1113, when she gave a gift to St Neot's Priory which had been founded as a dependent priory of Bec on Rohese's own manor of Eynesbury. Rohese's descendants eventually were the heirs to the lands held by her father, receiving half the honour of Long Crendon in Buckinghamshire in the reign of King Richard I of England (r. 1189–1199). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rohese_Giffard ------------------------------------------------------------------ “Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013): “RICHARD FITZ GILBERT, of Bienfaite and Orbec, Normandy, lord of Clare, Suffolk, Tonbridge, Kent, Standon, Hertfordshire, Blechingley, Surrey, etc., son of Gilbert Fitz Godfrey, Count of Brionne, born about 1030-35. He married ROHESE (or ROHAIS, ROHAID, ROAXIDIS) GIFFARD, daughter of Walter Giffard, of Longueville-sur-Scie (Seine-Maritime), Normandy, Long Crendon, Buckinghamshire, etc., by Agnes, daughter of Gerard Flaitel (or Fleitel). They had six sons, 1. Roger, 2. Gilbert, 3. Walter, 4. Richard [Abbot of Ely], 5. Robert, and 6. Godfrey, and four daughters, 7. Rohese, 8. Alice (wife of Walter Tirel), and 9. Avice. He was among those consulted about the proposed invasion of England in the assembly at Bonneville-sur-Touques in 1066, but there is no direct evidence of his personal participation at Hastings or in the campaign. Nevertheless, he was a significant figure soon afterwards and occurs as a witness of royal charters throughout the reign of King William the Conqueror. He was rewarded with no fewer than 176 lordships, which consisted of two concentrations of lands, one in Kent and Surrey, and the other in Suffolk and Essex. His holdings at Tonbridge, Kent and Clare, Suffolk were both given motte and bailey castles. During the king's absence, he served as Joint Chief Justiciar. He played a leading role in suppressing the rebellion of Roger de Breteuil, Earl of Hereford and Ralph de Gael in 1075 or 1076. In 1078 or 1079 he and his wife, Rohese, sent to Bec Abbey for a colony of monks to replenish the vacant convent at Neotsbury, Huntingdonshire. Sometime before 1086 he granted the monks of Bec his manors of Tooting and Streatham, and land in Horsham (in Walton-on-Thames), all in Surrey. Sometime before 1090 he confirmed to the monks of Bec two thirds of his demesne tithes and one villain in Standon, Hertfordshire; and two thirds of his demesne tithes in Blechingley, Chivington, Woodmansteme, Tolworth, Chipstead, Betchworth, and Walton Leigh, Surrey and houses in Southwark, Surrey and Tonbridge, Kent. ************* RICHARD FITZ GILBERT died about 1090, and was buried at St. Neots, Huntingdonshire. His widow, Rohese, was still living in 1113, when she granted the whole of her manor of Eynesbury, Huntingdonshire to St. Neot's Priory, Huntingdonshire. Children of Richard Fitz Gilbert, by Rohese Giffard: i. GILBERT FITZ RICHARD [see next]. ii. ROBERT FITZ RICHARD, of Little Dunmow, Essex, married MAUD DE SENLIS [see FITZ WALTER 4] iii. ROHESE (or ROSE) FITZ RICHARD, married EUDES THE STEWARD (or EUDES FITZ HUB) of Colchester, Essex [see SAY 2]. iv. AVICE FITZ RICHARD, married RAOUL [I] DE FOUGÈRES, seigneur of Fougères [see FOUGÈRES 2].”

- LifeSketch: END OF LINE ANCESTOR Edward and Margaret Marvin had 11 children There is no evidence I am aware of that an Margaret Gillyat married Edward (L9C6-MZJ), rather, IF there is a Gillyat(or Pakeman), it would be the Margaret (MDS3-8BX) who mrd his Brother John (KLLZ-1CZ). https://archive.org/stream/englishancestryo00marv#page/116/mode/1up John (KLLZ-1CZ) (Edwards brother) was twice married : first, to Anne (LZ2S-X3S), who died in Little Oakley and was buried* there 11 September, 1584, by whom he had a daughter. He married as his second wife Margaret (MDS3-8BX), evidently in the autumn or winter of 1584/5, his Will being dated 5 March 1584/5, and his burial is registered at St. Mary's three days later, but no record of his marriage appears there. The allusion to Alice Gyllyat, his "kynsewoman," and her " syster Ann Pakeman," who was very likely the wife of Lawrence, may suggest a clue to the * Parish Register of St. Mary's Church, Little Oakley. Reinold and Matthew Marvin 117 maiden name of ONE of these wives, but no attempt has been made to trace their connection. Aside from his residence John owned several other houses and lands, for he names four of his tenants. One of these estates (not the homestead) he gives conditionally to his widow during her life, and her issue, should there be a posthumous child ; if she die childless, all is to revert to his daughter by his first wife, who was 61 Anne b. , but evidently not of age when her father died. Whether there was another child has not been learned.

- Father: William FITZROBERT
- Mother: Hawise DE BEAUMONT
- Birth: ABT 1166, Beaumont Palace, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England
- Title Of Nobility: She was recognized as the 3rd Countess of Gloucester in her own right from her marriage to John de Burgh.
- LifeSketch: Isabella, Countess of Gloucester (1173/1174 – 14 October 1217), was an English noblewoman who was married to King John prior to his accession. Isabella was the daughter of William Fitz Robert, 2nd Earl of Gloucester, and his wife Hawise. Her paternal grandfather, Robert, 1st Earl of Gloucester, was the illegitimate son of King Henry I. Her father died in 1183, at which time she became Countess of Gloucester suo jure. Royal marriage and annulment On 28 September 1176, King Henry II betrothed Isabella to his youngest son, John Lackland.[1][2] John and Isabella were half-second cousins as great-grandchildren of Henry I, and thus within the prohibited degrees of consanguinity. But in the marriage agreement, the King agreed to find the best husband possible for Isabella should the Pope refuse to grant a dispensation for the marriage. Henry also declared Isabella the sole heir to Gloucester, disinheriting her two sisters.[2] On 29 August 1189, John and Isabella were married at Marlborough Castle in Wiltshire, and John assumed the Earldom of Gloucester in her right.[2][3] Baldwin, Archbishop of Canterbury, declared the marriage null by reason of consanguinity and placed their lands under interdict. The interdict was lifted by Pope Clement III. The Pope granted a dispensation to marry but forbade the couple from having sexual relations.[3] Shortly after John acceded to the throne in 1199, and before the end of August, he obtained an annulment of the marriage. The annulment was granted on the grounds of consanguinity, by the bishops of Lisieux, Bayeux, and Avranches, sitting in Normandy.[4] John, however, kept her lands, and Isabella did not contest the annulment.[4] Earldom of Gloucester After the annulment, John granted the title of Earl of Gloucester to Isabella's nephew Amaury, count of Évreux. This compensated Amaury for the loss of his French title, which was surrendered in the Treaty of Le Goulet. Upon his death without issue in 1213, Isabella once again became Countess of Gloucester.[2] Later marriages Isabel later married Geoffrey FitzGeoffrey de Mandeville, 2nd Earl of Essex, on 20 January 1214. He died in 1216. A year after Essex's demise, she married Hubert de Burgh (later Earl of Kent), later the justiciar of England, in September 1217.[2] Death and burial Isabella died just a month after her third marriage, probably at Keynsham Abbey in Somerset, which was founded by her father, and was interred in Canterbury Cathedral. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isabella%2C_Countess_of_Gloucester

- Father: Miles of GLOUCESTER
- Mother: Sybil DE NEUFMARCHE
- Birth: 1122, England
- Also known as: Margaret of Gloucester
- Also known as: Margaret de Bohun
- LifeSketch: Wikipedia Margaret of Hereford (also Margaret de Bohun née Margaret of Gloucester, 1122/1123 – 6 April 1197) was an English noblewoman and the eldest daughter of Miles de Gloucester, 1st Earl of Hereford by his wife, the wealthy Cambro-Norman heiress Sibyl de Neufmarché. Margaret married Humphrey II de Bohun, by whom she had five children. Margaret held the office of Constable of England and as a widow, exercised lordship of Herefordshire until her own death. She was the benefactress of several religious institutions. Family Margaret was born in about 1122/1123, the eldest child of Miles de Gloucester, 1st Earl of Hereford and Sibyl de Neufmarché, heiress to one of the most substantial fiefs in the Welsh Marches. She had five younger brothers and two sisters. These were: Roger Fitzmiles, 2nd Earl of Hereford, Walter de Hereford, Henry Fitzmiles, Mahel de Hereford, William de Hereford, Bertha of Hereford, and Lucy of Hereford. The Historia fundationis cum fundatoris genealogia of Abergavenny Priory named Margaretam, Bertram and Luciam as the three daughters of Miles and Sibyl. Marriage and issue She married Humphrey II de Bohun, an Anglo-Norman aristocrat and steward of King Henry I of England, on an unknown date before 1139. Like Margaret's father, Humphrey later supported Empress Matilda against her rival King Stephen during the period of civil war that raged over England, known to history as The Anarchy. Together, Margaret and her husband founded Farleigh Priory, although the charter is undated. The marriage produced a total of five children: 1. Humphrey III de Bohun (died 1180), married as her second husband, Margaret of Huntingdon, Duchess of Brittany, by whom he had issue. He held the office of Constable of England. 2. Milo de Bohun (died young) 3. Richard de Bohun (died young) 4. Matilda de Bohun (1140/1143 – after 1194/1199), married firstly Henry d'Oilly, by whom she had issue; secondly, Juhel de Mayenne; and thirdly, Walter FitzRobert. 5. Margery de Bohun (died before 1196), married Waleran de Beaumont, 4th Earl of Warwick, although, Warwick's wife is alternatively named as Margery d'Oilly, who was her niece. The 1192 birthdate of his son and heir makes Margery d'Oilly the likely spouse. Lordship of Herefordshire and Constable of England Following the death of her father in a hunting accident in 1143, and sometime before Margaret's husband died in about 1165, all five of her brothers died without legitimate offspring. After her eldest brother Roger's death, the earldom of Hereford fell into abeyance. As a consequence of these events, Miles' lands and properties were divided between Margaret and her two sisters. Being the eldest daughter, she received the lordship of Herefordshire and the office of Constable of England. This office was later passed to her eldest son Humphrey, grandson Henry, and would continue to be held by her direct descendants. As a widow she exercised lordship until her own death, over thirty years later. In her book Women of the English Nobility and Gentry 1066–1500, Jennifer C. Ward described Margaret as having exemplified "the roles which a woman could play in her estates". As lady of Herefordshire, she fulfilled her duties to her overlord King Henry II, having in 1166 returned the carta which named her knights; it documented 17 knights' fees of the old enfeoffment and three and three quarters of the new. She aided the King in the marriage of one of his daughters, and in 1167–1168 made an account to the Red Book of the Exchequer for her assistance. She also accounted to the Exchequer at the end of King Henry's reign and during that of his successor, King Richard I for scutage due to her from her vast holdings. In the lordship over which she ruled, she used her father as role model, having confirmed earlier grants of land to her tenants and made her own land grants to those who served her well. Margaret was a generous benefactress of several religious institutions, and she strove to carry out her late brothers' grants. She gave all her land in Quedgeley, Gloucestershire for the salvation of her brothers' souls. Her own grant was given to save the souls of King Henry II, her children, parents, husband, and the rest of her family. Death and legacy Margaret died on 6 April 1197 and was buried in Llanthony Secunda Priory in Gloucester which had been founded by her father and where her mother, Sibyl had entered a religious life after her husband's untimely death. Margaret herself had made endowments to the Augustinian priory. Two years following Margaret's death, King John confirmed the possessions of Llanthony Secunda Priory by charter which was dated 30 July 1199. These included the donation of duas partes de Onedesleye made by Margar de Bohun in accordance with the division made inter ipsam et Luciam suam sororem. On 28 April 1200, King John recreated the earldom of Hereford for Margaret's grandson Henry, of whom she had had custody during his minority. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_of_Hereford

- LifeSketch: From Wikipedia Biography Miles was the son and heir of Walter of Gloucester, hereditary castellan of Gloucester and sheriff of Gloucester, by Berta, his wife.[1] Miles' grandfather, Roger de Pitres, had been sheriff from about 1071, but was succeeded by his brother Durand, the Domesday sheriff, before 1083.[2] Durand was succeeded by his nephew Walter of Gloucester, c. 1096, who was sheriff in 1097 and in 1105–1106.[2] Walter was in favour with Henry I, three of whose charters to him are extant.[3] Walter held the post of a Constable of England. Early in 1121 his son Miles was given the hand of Sibyl, daughter of Bernard de Neufmarché, the conqueror of Brecknock, with the reversion of her father's possessions.[3] In the Pipe Roll of 1130 Walter is found to have been succeeded by his son,[4] having died in or around 1126.[5] Miles was (from 1128 at least) sheriff of Gloucestershire, a justice itinerant, and a justice of the forest,[6] and by 1130 was sheriff of Staffordshire.[5] He had also (though the fact has been doubted) been granted his father's office of constable by a special charter.[7] In conjunction with Pain Fitzjohn, sheriff of Herefordshire and Shropshire, he ruled the whole Welsh border "from the Severn to the sea".[8] On the accession of Stephen he set himself to secure the allegiance of these two lords-marchers, who at length, on receiving a safe-conduct and obtaining all they asked for, did him homage.[8] It was at Reading that they met the king early in 1136.[b] Miles is next found attending the Easter court at Westminster as one of the royal constables,[9] and, shortly after, the Oxford council in the same capacity.[10] He was then despatched to the aid of the widow of Richard fitz Gilbert de Clare, who was beleaguered in her castle by the Welsh and whom he gallantly rescued.[11] Meanwhile Miles had married his son and heir, Roger, to Cecily, daughter of Pain Fitzjohn, who inherited the bulk of her father's possessions.[12] In the same year 1136 Miles transferred the original house of Augustinian canons at Llanthony Priory, Monmouthshire to a site on the south side of Gloucester, which they named Llanthony Secunda.[13][14] Two years later (1138) Miles received, in his official capacity, King Stephen at Gloucester in May.[15] He has been said to have renounced his allegiance a few weeks later,[16] but careful investigation will show that he was with Stephen in August (1138) at the siege of Shrewsbury, and that his defection did not take place till 1139.[17] In February 1139 Stephen gave Gloucester Abbey to Miles's kinsman Gilbert Foliot at his request.[18] In the summer of 1139, however, he joined his lord, Robert, Earl of Gloucester, in inviting Empress Matilda to England.[19] On her arrival Miles met her at Bristol, welcomed her to Gloucester, recognised her as his rightful sovereign, and became thenceforth her ardent supporter. She at once gave him St. Briavels Castle and the Forest of Dean.[17] Miles's first achievement on behalf of Matilda was to relieve Brian Fitz Count who was blockaded in Wallingford Castle.[20] In November (1139) he again advanced from Gloucester and attacked and burnt Worcester.[21] He also captured the castles of Winchcombe, Cerne, and Hereford.[22] Meanwhile he was deprived by Stephen of his office of constable.[23] He took part in the victory at Lincoln (2 February 1141),[24] and on the consequent triumph of the empress he accompanied her in her progress, and was one of her three chief followers on her entry (2 March) into Winchester.[25] He was with her at Reading when she advanced on London,[26] and on reaching St. Albans Matilda bestowed on him a house at Westminster.[27] He was among those who fled with her from London shortly after, and it was on his advice, when they reached Gloucester, that she ventured back to Oxford.[28] There, on 25 July 1141, she bestowed on him the town and castle of Hereford and made him earl of that shire,[29] in avowed consideration of his faithful service. With singular unanimity hostile chroniclers testify to his devotion to her cause.[22] He even boasted that she had lived at his expense throughout her stay in England.[30] As "Earl Miles" he now accompanied her to Winchester,[31] and on the rout of her forces on 14 September 1141 he escaped, with the greatest difficulty, to Gloucester, where he arrived "exhausted, alone, and with scarcely a rag to his back".[32] Towards the end of the year he was in Bristol making a grant to Llanthony Priory in the presence of the Empress Matilda and the Robert, Earl of Gloucester.[33] In 1142 he is proved by charters to have been with the Empress at Oxford and to have received her permission to hold Abergavenny Castle of Brian Fitz Count.[34] It is probably to the summer of this year that he made a formal deed of alliance with the Earl of Gloucester, and as a hostage for the performance of which he gave the Earl his son Mahel.[17] In 1143 his pressing want of money wherewith to pay his troops led him to demand large sums from the church lands. Robert de Bethune, Bishop of Hereford, withstood his demands, and, on the Earl invading his lands, excommunicated him and his followers, and laid the diocese under interdict.[35] The Earl's kinsman, Gilbert Foliot (Abbot of Gloucester),[36] appealed to the legate on his behalf against the bishop's severity.[37] On Christmas-eve of this year (1143) the Earl was slain while hunting by an arrow shot at a deer.[38] A dispute at once arose for possession of his body between the canons of Llanthony and the monks of Gloucester. The case was heard before the bishops of Worcester, Hereford, and St. David's, and was terminated by a compromise on 28 December. The Earl was then buried in the chapter-house at Llanthony.[39] Miles was succeeded by his son and heir, Roger.[17] With his death in 1143, Miles was succeeded by his son and heir, Roger,.[17] Roger died without an heir twelve years later in 1155 so the Earldom of Hereford became extinct, but the shrievalty of Hereford and Gloucester passed to his brother Walter. On the death of the latter and two other brothers without issue the family possessions passed to their sisters, Bertha through her marriage bringing Abergavenny to Braose, but Margaret, the eldest sister, taking the bulk (Liber Niger) to the Bohuns afterwards (1199), in recognition of their descent from Miles, earls of Hereford, and constables of England.[40]

- LifeSketch: Robert FitzRoy, 1st Earl of Gloucester (c. 1090 – 31 October 1147) (alias Robert Rufus, Robert de Caen, Robert Consul) was an illegitimate son of King Henry I of England. He was the half-brother of the Empress Matilda, and her chief military supporter during the civil war known as The Anarchy, in which she vied with Stephen of Blois for the throne of England. Robert was probably the eldest of Henry's many illegitimate children. He was born before his father's accession to the English throne, either during the reign of his grandfather William the Conqueror or his uncle William Rufus. He is sometimes and erroneously designated as a son of Nest, daughter of Rhys ap Tewdwr, last king of Deheubarth, although his mother has been identified as a member of "the Gay or Gayt family of north Oxfordshire", possibly a daughter of Rainald Gay (fl. 1086) of Hampton Gay and Northbrook Gay in Oxfordshire. Rainald had known issue Robert Gay of Hampton (died c. 1138) and Stephen Gay of Northbrook (died after 1154). A number of Oxfordshire women feature as the mothers of Robert's siblings. Robert may have been a native of Caen or he may have been only Constable and Governor of that city, jure uxoris. Robert's father had contracted him in marriage to Mabel FitzHamon, daughter and heir of Robert Fitzhamon, but the marriage was not solemnized until June 1119 at Lisieux. His wife brought him the substantial honours of Gloucester in England and Glamorgan in Wales, and the honours of Sainte-Scholasse-sur-Sarthe and Évrecy in Normandy, as well as Creully. After the White Ship disaster late in 1120, and probably because of this marriage, in 1121 or 1122 his father created him Earl of Gloucester. Family Robert and his wife Mabel FitzHamon married in 1119, and they had seven children: 1. William FitzRobert (c.1121 – 1183): succeeded his father as 2nd Earl of Gloucester 2. Roger FitzRobert (c. 1123 – 1179): Bishop of Worcester 3. Hamon FitzRobert, knight (c. 1124 – 1159): killed at the siege of Toulouse. 4. Richard FitzRobert, Lord of Creully (c. 1125 – 1175): succeeded his mother as Sire de Creully. 5. Matilda FitzRobert (c. 1126 – 1189): married in 1143 Ranulf de Gernon, 4th Earl of Chester. 6. Mabel FitzRobert: married Aubrey de Vere 7. Philip FitzRobert, Lord of Cricklade (c. 1130 – 1148) He also had four illegitimate children: 1. Richard FitzRobert (died 1142): Bishop of Bayeux [mother: Isabel de Douvres, sister of Richard de Douvres, bishop of Bayeux (1107–1133)] 2. Robert FitzRobert (died 1170): Castellan of Gloucester, married in 1147 Hawise de Reviers (daughter of Baldwin de Reviers, 1st Earl of Devon and his first wife Adelisa), had daughter Mabel FitzRobert (married firstly Jordan de Chambernon and secondly William de Soliers) 3. Mabel FitzRobert: married Gruffud, Lord of Senghenydd, son of Ifor Bach. 4. Thomas FitzRobert Relationship with King Stephen There is evidence in the contemporary source, the Gesta Stephani, that Robert was proposed by some as a candidate for the throne, but his illegitimacy ruled him out: "Among others came Robert, Earl of Gloucester, son of King Henry, but a bastard, a man of proved talent and admirable wisdom. When he was advised, as the story went, to claim the throne on his father's death, deterred by sounder advice he by no means assented, saying it was fairer to yield it to his sister's son (the future Henry II of England), than presumptuously to arrogate it to himself." This suggestion cannot have led to any idea that he and Stephen were rivals for the Crown, as Geoffrey of Monmouth in 1136 referred to Robert as one of the 'pillars' of the new King's rule. The capture of King Stephen at the Battle of Lincoln on 2 February 1141 gave the Empress Matilda the upper hand in her battle for the throne, but by alienating the citizens of London she failed to be crowned Queen. Her forces were defeated at the Rout of Winchester on 14 September 1141, and Robert of Gloucester was captured nearby at Stockbridge. The two prisoners, King Stephen and Robert of Gloucester, were then exchanged, but by freeing Stephen, the Empress Matilda had given up her best chance of becoming queen. She later returned to France, where she died in 1167, though her son succeeded Stephen as King Henry II in 1154. Robert of Gloucester died in 1147 at Bristol Castle, where he had previously imprisoned King Stephen, and was buried at St James' Priory, Bristol, which he had founded. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert,_1st_Earl_of_Gloucester .................................................................................... “Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013): “ROBERT FITZ ROY, in right of his wife, of Gloucester, Bristol, Tewkesbury, and Cardiff, seigneur of Creully in Calvados, and Torigny in Manche, Normandy, illegitimate son, probably born about 1090. He witnessed charters of his father the king from about April 1113. He fought at the Battle of Brémulé in 1119, where his father, King Henry I, defeated King Louis VI of France. He married before 1122 MABEL FITZ ROBERT, daughter and heiress of Robert Fitz Hamon, of Gloucester, Bristol, Tewkesbury, and Cardiff, seigneur of Creully in Calvados, and Torigny in Manche, Normandy, hereditary Governor of Caen, by Sybil, daughter of Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Shrewsbury. They had six sons, William [Earl of Gloucester], Philip, Hamon, Roger [Bishop of Worcester], Richard [seigneur of Creully], and Robert, and two daughters, Maud and Mabel. By an unknown mistress, he also had an illegitimate son, Richard [Bishop of Bayeux]. He was created Earl of Gloucester between June and September 1122. In 1123 he brought a force to assist in the capture of Brionne Castle, which was held by rebellious Norman barons. In 1126 he had the custody of his uncle, Robert, Duke of Normandy, as a prisoner at Bristol, and later at Cardiff. The same year he secured a working relationship with the Welsh-dominated church of south Wales, under its aggressive bishop, Urban. In 1127 he did homage to the Empress Maud, recognizing her as his father's successor in the kingdom. In 1130 he sanctioned the foundation of Neath Abbey. In 1133, following the death of Richard, Bishop of Bayeux, he was sent by his father to Bayeux to enquire as to the fees and services due to the see by its barons, knights, and vavasours. He was present at his father's death at Lions-le-Forêt in Dec. 1135, and had 60,000 livres from him, apparently as executor. On Stephen's subsequent accession to the English throne and his recognition as Duke by the Normans, Robert gave up Falaise to his agents, but removed his father's treasure. In March 1136 he returned to England, and after Easter did homage for his English lands. About this time or in the following year he founded St. James's Priory at Bristol. In 1137 he accompanied Stephen to Normandy, but they quarrelled, and next year his English and Welsh estates were forfeited. Thereupon he prepared for war with Stephen and took up the cause of his half-sister, Maud, in Normandy. In Sept. 1139 he landed in England with Maud and took her to Arundel Castle, and became her commander-in-chief in the civil war that ensued. His first significant campaign, once the empress was established in England, was directed at the city of Worcester, which he sacked 7 November 1139. In May 1140 he was delegated by his sister to negotiate at Bath with the king' envoys, but nothing came of the meeting. Later in 1140 he and the Earl of Warwick led a successful raid on Nottingham. In 1141 he and his son-in-law, Ranulph, Earl of Chester, recruited a large army, including a force of Welsh under the kings of Glamorgan and Gwynedd. Their army encountered the king's army near Lincoln and dispersed it, capturing the king himself. The king was removed to Gloucester and then to Bristol, Earl Robert's principal English castle. He subsequently accompanied Maud in her progress to Winchester and London, and when the citizens drove her out, he fled with her to Oxford. He was captured at Stockbridge 14 Sept. 1141, and taken prisoner to Rochester. Shortly afterwards, he was exchanged for King Stephen. In June 1142 Maud sent him over to her husband, Geoffrey of Anjou, to urge him to invade England; Geoffrey declined to help until he had conquered Normandy, whereupon Robert joined him in the campaign. Sometime between 1141-3, probably in June 1142, he signed a treaty friendship with Miles, Earl of Hereford, by which the two men agreed to support each other, especially in the war between King Stephen and Empress Maud. In 1143 he defeated King Stephen at Wilton. In 1144 he blockaded Malmesbury, Stephen refusing to battle; but Maud's party was so much reduced that Stephen was able to take Faringdon, which Robert had fortified. He witnessed a charter of Henry d'Oilly in the period, 1144-47. In the spring of 1147 he took Henry, Maud's son, back to Wareham and sent him over to Anjou. In his last year, probably on his deathbed, he made moves to assist the Cistercians, who were attempting to set up a house in upland Glamorgan; the resultant abbey of Margam counted him as its founder. ROBERT FITZ ROY, 1st Earl of Gloucester, died at Bristol 31 October 1147, and was buried in the Priory church of St. James, BristoL His widow, Mabel, Countess of Gloucester, died 29 Sept. 1157.

- LifeSketch: Harold Godwinson (c. 1022 – 14 October 1066), also called Harold II, was the last crowned Anglo-Saxon king of England. Harold reigned 9 months, from 6 January 1066 until his death at the Battle of Hastings, fighting the Norman invaders led by William the Conqueror. His death marked the end of Anglo-Saxon rule over England. Harold was a member of a prominent Anglo-Saxon family with ties to Cnut the Great. He became a powerful earl after the death of his father Godwin, Earl of Wessex. Upon the death of his brother-in-law King Edward the Confessor without an heir on 5 January 1066, the Witenagemot convened and chose Harold to succeed; he was probably the first English monarch to be crowned in Westminster Abbey. In September, he successfully repelled an invasion by rival claimant Harald Hardrada of Norway in York before marching his army back south to meet William the Conqueror at Hastings two weeks later. Harold was a son of Godwin (c. 1001–1053), the powerful earl of Wessex, and of Gytha Thorkelsdóttir, whose brother Ulf the Earl was married to Estrid Svendsdatter (c. 1015/1016), the daughter of King Sweyn Forkbeard[ (died 1014) and sister of King Cnut the Great of England and Denmark. Ulf and Estrith's son would become King Sweyn II of Denmark in 1047. Godwin was the son of Wulfnoth, probably a thegn and a native of Sussex. Godwin made a political career by switching sides when it benefitted him. He supported King Edmund Ironside, then King Cnut, who named him Earl of Wessex. After Cnut's death Godwin supported Harthacnut then Harold Harefoot. Harthacnut's death in 1042 probably involved Godwin in a role as kingmaker, helping to secure the English throne for Edward the Confessor. Godwin reached the height of his power in 1045 when the new king married Godwin's daughter Edith. Harold had many siblings. Godwin and Gytha had several children—six sons: Sweyn, Harold, Tostig, Gyrth, Leofwine and Wulfnoth; and three daughters: Edith of Wessex (originally named Gytha but renamed Ealdgyth (or Edith) when she married King Edward the Confessor), Gunhild and Ælfgifu. The birthdates of the children are unknown, but Harold was the second son, Sweyn being the eldest. Harold was aged about 25 in 1045, which makes his birth year around 1020. Harold's sister Edith married Edward on 23 January 1045 and, around that time, Harold became Earl of East Anglia. Harold is called "earl" when he appears as a witness in a will that may date to 1044; and regularly appears as an earl in 1045 documents. One reason for his appointment to East Anglia may have been a need to defend against the threat from King Magnus the Good of Norway, and Harold is believed to have led some of the ships from his earldom sent to Sandwich in 1045 against Magnus. It was also around this time that Harold began a relationship with Edith the Fair, who appears to have been the heiress to lands in Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Essex, lands in Harold's new earldom. The relationship was what we would call a common law marriage, known as More danico, or "in the Danish manner", and was accepted by most laypeople in England at the time, but not blessed or sanctioned by the Church. Children of such a union were considered legitimate. Harold probably entered the relationship in part to secure support in his new earldom. Harold's elder brother Sweyn was exiled in 1047 and his lands divided between Harold and a cousin, Beorn. In 1049, Harold commanded ships sent with a fleet to aid Henry III, Holy Roman Emperor against Baldwin V, Count of Flanders. Earl Godwin was sent into exile in 1051, Harold accompanied his father and helped him to regain his position a year later. Godwin died in 1053, and Harold succeeded him as Earl of Wessex (the southern third of England). This arguably made him the most powerful figure in England after the king. In 1055 Harold drove back the Welsh, who had burned Hereford, and added Earl of Hereford to his titles. He led a series of successful campaigns (1062–63) against Gruffydd ap Llywelyn of Gwynedd, king of Wales. This conflict ended with Gruffydd's defeat and death in 1063. Harold later married Gruffydd's widow, Ealdgyth, daughter of Ælfgar, Earl of Mercia. King Edward the Confessor fell into a coma in 1065 without clarifying his preference for the succession. He briefly regaining consciousness and commended his widow and the kingdom to Harold's "protection" and died on 5 January 1066. When the Witan convened the next day they selected Harold to succeed, and his coronation followed on 6 January, most likely held in Westminster Abbey, though no evidence from the time survives to confirm this. Later Norman sources point to the suddenness of this coronation, but in reality the reason may have been that all the nobles of the land were present at Westminster for the feast of Epiphany. Hearing of Harold's coronation in January 1066, Duke William II of Normandy began plans to invade England. William could not initially get support for the invasion but received the Church's blessing after claiming Harold had sworn on sacred relics to support his claim to the throne. In anticipation of the invasion, Harold assembled troops on the Isle of Wight. The invasion fleet was delayed and Harold disbanded his army on 8 September, because provisions were running out. On the same day that Harold returned to London, Harald Hardrada of Norway, who also claimed the English crown, joined Tostig Godwinson (Harold's brother) and invaded, landing his fleet at the mouth of the Tyne. Hardrada and Tostig defeated the English earls Edwin of Mercia and Morcar of Northumbria at the Battle of Fulford on 20 September 1066, but on September 25th Harold caught them by by surprise, in the Battle of Stamford Bridge. Hardrada and Tostig were defeated and both killed. On 28 September William's fleet with 7000 men landed at Pevensey in East Sussex. Harold marched his army 241 miles to intercept them. The armies clashed at the Battle of Hastings on 14 October, and after 9 hours of hard fighting, Harold was killed and his forces defeated. His brothers Gyrth and Leofwine were also killed in the battle. Legends say that Harold died by an arrow to the eye, others that he was killed by four knights, including Duke William, and his body dismembered. The contemporary chronicler William of Poitiers, states that the body of Harold was given to William Malet for burial. Malet was Harold's brother in law and fought for William the Conqueror. Edith Swannesha is said to have been called to identify the body. Harold burial location is unknown, it is said he was 'buried by the sea' after being denied burial by the victor William I. HAROLD MARRIED TWICE BOTH WIVES NAMED EDITH/EALDGYTH For some twenty years Harold was married to Edyth Swannesha, as the marriage was 'more danico', she was considered Harold's mistress by the clergy. Together they had at least 6 children: Godwin, Edmund, Mangus, Gytha, Gunhild, Ulf. About January 1066, Harold married Ealdgyth (also Edith), daughter of Ælfgar, Earl of Mercia, and widow of Gruffydd ap Llywelyn. Edith had one son, named Harold, probably born after his fathers death. After her husband's death, Edith fled for refuge to her brothers, Edwin, Earl of Mercia and Morcar of Northumbria, but both men made their peace with King William initially before rebelling and losing their lands and lives. Edith may have fled abroad (possibly with Harold's mother, Gytha, or with Harold's daughter, Gytha). Harold's son Ulf, along with Morcar and two others, were released from prison by King William as he lay dying in 1087. Ulf threw his lot in with Robert Curthose, who knighted him, and then disappeared from history. Two of Harold's other sons, Godwine and Edmund, invaded England in 1068 and 1069 with the aid of the High King of Ireland, but were defeated by Brian of Brittany. According to Orderic Vitalis, Harold was at some time betrothed to Adeliza, a daughter of William the Conqueror; if so, the betrothal never led to marriage. Per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harold_Godwinson ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HAROLD ([1022/25]-killed in battle Hastings 14 Oct 1066, bur [Waltham Abbey]). His parentage is confirmed in several places in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle[542]. Orderic Vitalis names “Suenum, Tosticum, Heraldum, Guorth, Elgarum, Leofvinum et Wlnodum” as the seven sons of “Githa Goduini comitis relicta”[543]. He was created Earl of the East Angles, Essex, Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire in 1044 by King Edward "the Confessor". King Edward granted him part of the earldom of his brother Svein, after the latter was outlawed following his seduction of the abbess of Leominster. After joining his father's threatened armed rebellion against the king in 1051, he fled to Ireland with his brother Leofwine[544]. He returned from Ireland the following year and joined forces with his father[545]. Harold was appointed to succeed his father as Earl of Wessex in 1053, his own earldom of the East Angles passing to Ælfgar son of Leofric Earl of Mercia[546]. He succeeded as HAROLD II King of England and was crowned 6 Jan 1066. Per Project Medlands

- LifeSketch: Adam Goodrich was the principal heir in the 26 Jun 1563 will of Robert Goodrich of Felsham that bequeathed to him all freehold and copyhold lands and tenements in Felsham, with additional bequeaths of £20 to Thomas Goodrich, £20 to William Goodrich, £10 to Emma Goodrich, £10 to Elizabeth Goodrich, and £20 to John Goodrich, with provision for widow Elizabeth to be cared for and have access to the living quarters on his Felsham properties in which his father had dwelled at the time of his decease. As the family of eldest son Adam Goodrich in Felsham grew to 6 children by 1576, however, widow Elizabeth alias Isabella moved to Hessett, where third son William Goodrich had a smaller family, and where she died and was buried on 09 Aug 1579. Adam Goodrich married twice, with no known record of either marriage: first to Anne, with whom he had Robert, Susan, John, Henry, William, Alice and Adam (~1563-1579), and second to Katherine, with whom he had Elizabeth, Anthony, Anne and Isaac (1581-1588); with an apparent move from Hessett (John Goodrich bp. 08 Sep 1568 at St. Ethelbert-Hessett) to Felsham (Henry Goodrich bp. 03 Jun 1571). The 13 Mar 1596/7 will of Adam Goodrich; proved 08 Apr 1597, named wife Katherine, principal heir Robert, and other children John, Henry, William, Alice, Adam, Elizabeth, Anthony, Anne, Isaac, and Susan. The son “John Goodrich of Bury” in the will was likely John Goodrich the Alderman, who had baptized at St. Mary-Bury St. Edmunds a son Henry Goodrich on 06 Apr 1595 and a daughter Elizabeth Goodrich on 21 Mar 1595/6. Next-generation-sequencing (NGS) Y-SNP testing established in 2015 that Y-descendants of immigrants William-1 Goodrich/Goodridge of Watertown, MA and William-1 Goodrich of Wethersfield, CT; first-cousins who share common Y-ancestor William Goodrich I of Hessett (~1545-1631), share the Y-SNP mutation E-FGC44079 that is not shared by Y-descendants of immigrant Thomas-1 Goodrich of Old Rappahannock, VA; a second cousin who shares common Y-ancestor Robert Goodrich of Felsham (~1505-1570). Y-descendants of all 3 immigrant ancestors, however, do share E-L1019 and 37 more Y-SNP mutations after E-Z16242, that have been seen only in Y-descendants of Robert Goodrich of Felsham (~1505-1570) so far. As for E-Z16242: it is seen in all Felsham Goodrich Y-descendants and in 3 non-Goodrich individuals, so far, who trace their Y-ancestry to Portugal, which at one time was part of the Roman Province of Hispania (beginning with the Roman conquest of Hispania, from the Balkans, in 218 BC); one of a number of military gateways to what was then Britannia, and is now England, from 43-400 AD. The first son of William Goodrich II of Hessett; believed to be William Goodrich III of Hessett and later the immigrant William Goodridge of Watertown, MA is the only Y-descendant of William Goodrich I of Hessett capable of bringing about this order of Y-SNP relationship.
