- LifeSketch: Wikipedia Antonia Tryphaena also known as Tryphaena of Thrace or Tryphaena (her name in Greek: η Άντωνία Τρύφαινα or Τρυφαίνη, 10 BC – 55 AD) was a Pontus Princess and a Roman Client Queen of Thrace. Origins, family and early life Tryphaena was the only known daughter and the youngest child of Roman client rulers Polemon Pythodoros and Pythodorida of Pontus. Her elder brothers were Zenon, also known as Artaxias III, who became Roman client king of Armenia and Polemon II of Pontus, who would succeed her mother and became the last Roman client ruler of Pontus. She was of Anatolian Greek and Roman heritage. Her paternal grandfather was Zenon, a prominent orator and aristocrat, who had been an ally to Mark Antony. Her maternal grandparents were the wealthy Greek friends of the late Roman Triumvir Pompey Pythodoros of Tralles, and Antonia. Through her maternal grandmother she was a direct descendant of Mark Antony and his second wife Antonia Hybrida Minor. Antony and Antonia were first paternal cousins. Her name reflects her descent from the triumvir. She was Antony's third great grandchild and his first great granddaughter. The only other female descendant of Antony's, who bears the name ‘Antonia’, is Claudia Antonia, a Roman princess and the first daughter of Roman Emperor Claudius. Her second name Tryphaena is a name of ancient Greek origin and this name was associated with the Greek Queens and Princesses of the Ptolemaic dynasty of Ancient Egypt. Tryphaena wasn't a blood relative of the Ptolemaic dynasty.[a] Through Antony, her great maternal aunt was Roman Client Queen Cleopatra Selene II of Mauretania, through her she was a cousin to Roman client king Ptolemy of Mauretania and the princesses Drusilla of Mauretania the Elder and Drusilla of Mauretania the Younger. Through Antony she was also a distant cousin to Roman Emperors Caligula, Claudius and Nero and Roman Empresses Messalina, Agrippina the Younger and Claudia Octavia. Tryphaena's father died in 8 BC. Her mother married Roman Client King Archelaus of Cappadocia. Her family moved to Cappadocia and along with her brothers were raised in the court of their stepfather. Archelaus died in 17. After his death, her mother and Polemon II moved back to Pontus. Queen of Thrace Before 12 AD, Tryphaena married Thracian Prince Cotys VIII. Cotys was the son and heir of the Roman client rulers of Thrace, Rhoemetalces I and Pythodoris I. In 12 AD Rhoemetalces I died, at which point Tryphaena became queen of Thrace. Only two ancient sources make reference to her: the historian Tacitus and Strabo the Geographer. Tacitus refers to her as Cotys’ widow and Strabo refers to her as the unnamed daughter of Polemon Pythodoros and the wife of Cotys. The Greek geographer Strabo was a friend to her mother. We also know of Tryphaena from numismatic evidence, inscriptions and buildings she ordered to be commissioned. On surviving coinage, her royal title is ΒΑΣΙΛΙΣΣΗΣ ΤΡΥΦΑΙΝΗΣ or of Queen Tryphaena. In the ancient Greek city of Cyzicus (now in modern Turkey) which became second her residence, Tryphaena and her children have left a number of inscriptions in Cyzicus. Some of these inscriptions mention her and reveal her descent, for example: Άντωνία Τρύφαινα Βασιλέως Πολέμωνος καί Βα[σιλίσ]σης Πυθοδωρίδος Θυγάτηρ Antonia Tryphaena, daughter of King Polemon and of Queen Pythodoris After the death of Augustus in 14 AD, Tryphaena ordered and commissioned at her expense the restoration of Cyzicus. The city's restoration included works completed on its harbours and canals. She did this as an offering to the memory of Augustus. Sometime after the Cyzicus’ restorations were completed, Rhescuporis II wanted to claim Cotys’ section of the Thracian Kingdom for himself to rule as one kingdom. Cotys refused to give in the demands of his uncle. The political disagreement between Rhescuporis and Cotys led Cotys to be captured and killed by his paternal uncle. After the murder of Cotys in 18 AD, Tryphaena fled with her family to Cyzicus. Later in 18 AD Roman Emperor Tiberius opened a murder investigation into Cotys’ death. Tiberius put Rhescuporis II on trial in the Roman Senate and invited Tryphaena to attend the trial. During the trial Tryphaena accused Rhescuporis II of killing her husband and forcing him to exile himself from his own kingdom. Tiberius found Rhescuporis II guilty and sent him to live in exile in Alexandria, Egypt. On his way to Egypt, Rhescuporis II tried to escape and was killed by Roman soldiers. Tiberius returned the whole Thracian Kingdom to Tryphaena, and appointed Tryphaena and Cotys’ first child Rhoemetalces II to rule with his mother. The son of Rhescuporis II, Rhoemetalces III, was spared by Tiberius and allowed him to return to Thrace. Tryphaena bore Cotys four known children: A son, Rhoemetalces II, he was named after his paternal grandfather and ruled with Tryphaena from when his father died in 18 until his death in 38. A daughter, Gepaepyris, she married the Roman Client King Tiberius Julius Aspurgus of the Bosporan Kingdom. A son, Cotys IX, he was the namesake of his father. He became Roman Client King of Lesser Armenia from 38 until at least 47. A daughter, Pythodoris II or Pythodorida II. She was named after her maternal grandparents and her paternal grandmother. In 38, after the death of Rhoemetalces II, Tryphaena abdicated the throne at the request of Roman Emperor Caligula. Pythodoris II married her second paternal cousin Rhoemetalces III and they ruled Thrace as Roman Client Rulers from 38 until 46. While Tryphaena's children were growing up they were part of the remarkable court of Antonia Minor in Rome. Antonia Minor was another great maternal aunt of Tryphaena's. Antonia Minor was a very influential woman and supervised her circle of various princes and princesses. Her circle assisted in the political preservation of the Roman Empire's borders and affairs of the client states. Tryphaena was appointed by Caligula in 38 AD to serve as a priestess in the cult of Julia Drusilla. In 42 AD, she was appointed by Claudius to serve as a priestess in the cult of late Roman Empress Livia Drusilla. From 38 until her death, Tryphaena lived as a private citizen in Cyzicus. In Caligula's reign, she became the benefactor of Cyzicus and enjoyed Caligula's patronage. Tryphaena was a prominent citizen in Cyzicus. Tryphaena was heavy influenced by Livia's lifestyle. Tryphaena's behavior provided an example to elite women in Anatolia, which was later appreciated by other women in that region. Association with Judaism and Christianity Tryphaena's brother Polemon II married the Judean Princess Julia Berenice and through their marriage Polemon converted to Judaism and probably later became a Christian. Through the preachings of Paul the Apostle, Tryphaena may have converted to Christianity. In Christian literature, the Acts of Paul and Thecla set a Queen Tryphaena, a relative of the emperor, in the city of Antioch of Pisidia; the Epistle to the Romans (16:12) mentions a person named Tryphena, sends his greeting and adds ’who works in the Lord’s service’. A later martyrology connects her with Iconium. The two characters are likely based on Antonia Tryphaena. Tryphaena of Cyzicus is the patron saint of Cyzicus and she was named in honour of Tryphaena.

- LifeSketch: Arvirargus (or Arviragus) was a legendary, and possibly historical, British king of the 1st century AD. A shadowy historical Arviragus is known only from a cryptic reference in a satirical poem by Juvenal, in which a giant turbot presented to the Roman emperor Domitian (AD 81-96) is said to be an omen that "you will capture some king, or Arviragus will fall from his British chariot-pole". Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae (1136) presents a legendary Arviragus who is contemporary with the emperor Claudius (41-54 AD). However, Geoffrey's work is highly romanticized and contains little trustworthy historical fact, rendering his account of Arvirargus suspect. According to Geoffrey, Arvirargus is a son of the former king Kimbelinus. He succeeds to the throne of Britain after his elder brother, Guiderius, dies fighting the invading Romans under Claudius. Arviragus puts on his brother's armour and leads the army of the Britons against the Romans. When he learns that Claudius and his commander, Hamo, have fled into the woods, Arvirargus follows him until they reach the coast. The Britons kill Hamo as he tries to flee onto a ship and the place is named Southampton after him. Claudius is able to reassemble his troops elsewhere and he besieges Portchester until it falls to his forces. Following Hamo's death, Arvirargus seeks refuge at Winchester, but Claudius follows him there with his army. The Britons break the siege and attack the Romans, but Claudius halts the attack and offers a treaty. In exchange for peace and tribute with Rome, Claudius offers Arvirargus his own daughter in marriage. They accept each other's terms and Arvirargus aids Claudius in subduing Orkney and other northern lands. In the following spring, Arvirargus weds Claudius' daughter, Genvissa, and names the city of Gloucester after her father. Following the wedding, Claudius leaves Britain in the control of Arvirargus. In the years following Claudius' departure, Arvirargus rebuilds the cities that have been ruined and becomes feared by his neighbours. This causes him to halt his tribute to Rome, forcing Claudius to send Vespasian with an army to Britain. As Vespasian prepares to land, such a large British force stands ready that he flees to another port, Totnes, where he sets up camp. Once a base is established, he marches to Exeter and besieges the city. Arvirargus meets him in battle there and the fight is stalemated. The following morning, Queen Genvissa mediates peace between the two foes. Vespasian returns to Rome and Arvirargus rules the country peacefully for some years. When he finally dies, he is buried in Gloucester, the city he built with Claudius. He is succeeded by his son, Marius. Geoffrey's legendary Arvirargus appears to correspond to some degree to the historical Caratacus, son of Cunobelinus, who, along with his brother Togodumnus, led the initial resistance to the Roman invasion of 43 AD, and went on to be a thorn in Rome's side for nearly a decade after Togodumnus's death. Welsh versions of Geoffrey's Historia call him Gweirydd and his brother Gwydr. Arvirargus is a character in William Shakespeare's play Cymbeline. He and his brother Guiderius had been kidnapped in childhood by Belarius, a nobleman wrongly banished by Cymbeline, and brought up in secret in Wales, but are reunited with their father and sister Imogen in time for the Roman invasion. The records of Henry Herbert (Master of the Revels) show that a play called Arviragus, was performed at the Court of Charles I on December 26 and 27 1636.

In the division of lands the southern portions fell to the lot of the representat ive of Goronwy, for he predeceased his father, leaving only a daughter and heir, Rheingar, who carried her possessions by marriage of Cuhelyn ab Ivor ab Severnus, and from them came Elystan Glodrydd, Prince of Fferlis, the country between the Wye and Severn. - LifeSketch: Anna Tuttle Judson-Hurd BIRTH 20 Jan 1633 Ringstead, East Northamptonshire Borough, Northamptonshire, England DEATH 1 Nov 1698 (aged 65) Woodbury, Litchfield County, Connecticut, USA BURIAL Ancient Burying Ground Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut, USA MEMORIAL ID 51450399 · View Source MEMORIAL PHOTOS 1 FLOWERS 29 Daughter of William & Elizabeth Tuthill. Married John Hurd 10 Dec 1662 in Stratford, Fairfield, CT. Mother of 10 children. Per FAG contributor, Darrel Salisbury (#126832158): "This doesn't agree with the record. The American Genealogist (TAG) Vol. 50, pp. 8-9 says that on 20 Dec 1690 an agreement was made between "Anna Hurd widdow" & her children, Joseph, Benjamin, Ebenezer, & Sarah Hurd, "respecting ye land accommodations & Estate that was Lately John Hurds of Woodbury Deceased". Anna, bp. "Anne" & also called "Hannah" had 10 children, 3 with first husband, Joshua Judson, son of William, who died in 1661." Per FAG contributor Marion O. (#48244885): Hannah Tuttle, widow of Joahua Judson wed the son of Adam Hurd b 1607 who was the brother of John Hurd b 1613-1681. No grave has ever been found for Adam. Both brothers had sons named John therefore a lot of confusion. Adam's son moved to Woodbury and ran a grist mill there. His widow Hannah Tuttle Judson Hurd is buried at the Old Ancient Burying ground in Hartford,CT. John brother of Adam (gravestone in Stratford photo) married Sarah Thompson and had eight children: John b 16 Dec 1664; Sarah 17 Feb 1666; Hannah 27 Sep 1667; Isaac 2 June 1669; Jacob 18 Nov 1761; Mary 15 Apr 1673; Hester 20 Aug 1676 and Abigail 12 Jul 1673 When I visited the cemetery, I was told that the stone had been recarved and the John Hurd 3 is in error. He was called John, SR to separate him from his nephew, son of Adam. ∼ [The memorial for Ann (Tuttle)(Judson) Hurd with biographic sketch created by the late Earl Loose was materially wrong and was transferred to the current memorialist, a descendant of her parents. A substantial revision follows.] Ann Tuttle, eldest dau. of William Tuttle and his wife Elizabeth, was bapt. of record Jan. 20, 1632/3 at Ringstead, Northamptonshire, England. Ann m. 1) prior to 1656 Joshua Judson of Stratford, Conn., who died circa 1661. She m. 2) of record Dec. 10, 1662 at Stratford, Conn., John Hurd, who while residing at Stratford is called "John Hurd Jr." to distinguish him from his uncle "John Hurd Sr." of Stratford. Ann had three known children by Joshua Judson and seven known children by John Hurd. On Mar. 23, 1686/7 at Woodbury, Conn. John Hurd conveyed land to his sons Joseph and Benjamin Hurd under provision that they "comfortably and Commendably" maintain him and his wife "till forty seven years be fully and Compleately expired." Then on Apr. 29, 1688 John Hurd and wife Ann joined the Church at Woodbury, Conn. This was followed on Dec. 20, 1690 by a recorded settlement between "Anna Hurd widdow" and her children Joseph Hurd, Benjamin Hurd, Ebenezer Hurd, and Sarah Hurd, "respecting ye land accommodations & Estate that was Lately John Hurds of Woodbury Deceased." This agreement was approved by the Fairfield County Court Nov. 1, 1698 but not recorded at Woodbury until Feb. 8, 1728/9. The widow, Ann (Tuttle) (Judson) Hurd, apparently returned to Stratford during or after the year 1690 as an undated Stratford First Church record states the "widow Hurd" and others "brought letters from Woodberry [and] Covenanted with this Church." However, there is no record of Ann's death and where she is interred is unknown. The children of Ann Tuttle by 2nd husband John Hurd will be summarized in their father's memorial. Note: Ann's descendants are referred to in several articles published in "The American Genealogist" (TAG). Those articles substantially correct all prior published genealogies regarding her and 2nd husband John Hurd; major portions of which are included in the above summary. - Birth: 1504, Lydney, Gloucestershire, England, United Kingdom
- Also known as: Alice Tirrell
- LifeSketch: ALICE TYRELL was born about 1503 of Hilbernia, Cork, Ireland to William Tyrell of Cork and Jane Gamage. She married John Winter. Alice died at unknown place and time. e Tirry / Terry / Tyrry + other variations in spelling, were an old Anglo-Norman ("Old English") family that colonised Cork County, Ireland, at least as early as the 1300s. As such, they were loyal English subjects and as their wealth and prosperity grew, they maintained many ties to England. An excellent book has been written about Cork and this influential family that by the 16th Century were allied with the powerful Gamage and Desmond families of Wales, England and Ireland.[1] A well-researched Family Tree genealogy that lists Alice Tirry/Terry's ancestors, especially the Gamage family and the Desmonds, shows that Alice Tirry (m. John Winter/Wynter) was most-likely named for her grandmother, Alice Desmond. Her father was Sir William Terry/Tirry Jr., and mother Jane Gamage. The family had holdings in Ireland and Gloucestershire and also Wales and no doubt traveled by ship between these locations frequently, making it no surprise that a Tirry daughter might marry an English sea captain like John Wynter.[2] The Carolina Winters Family Tree Says:[3] •ID: I07436 •Name: Alice Tyrry (Terry) •Sex: F •Birth: 1501 in Gloucestershire, England •Death: in Y, Somme, Picardie, France •Note: Mary Langton was descended from several families who were involved in the Catholic Pilgrimage of Grace. A chalice was found hidden at Lydney, inherited by his grandson Sir John Winter, Secretary to Queen Henrietta Maria, a known and fervent Catholic; Sir John Married Lady Anne or Mary Howard. His son Sir Charles Winter was accused by Titus Oates of being a Catholic but no harm was done as Oates was proved to be a lier. Father: William Tirry b: 1472 in Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England Marriage: John Winter b: 1495 in Gloucestershire, England. [NOTE: Winter surname also spelled WYNTER in 16th Century] Married: 1531 in Llandorff, Glamorgan, Wales Children of John Winter and Alice Tyrell: 1. Thomas Grabham Winter (1518-1578) 2. George William Winter (1521-1581) 3. Arthur Wynter (1522-1558) 4. Mary Winter (1524-1583) 5. Elizabeth Winter (1526-1591) md. Payne 6. Alice Winter (1526-) 7. Agnes Ann Winter (1528-1574) 8.
