JOHN MERVYN or MARVEN (9HGG-SBS) (John, Thomas), of Ramsey, co. Essex, may have been born about 1510. He was of age in 1533, when he acted as co-executor of his father’s will. There is an account of him in the English Ancestry, pp. 38-39 and 73-74, though his parentage is not there definitely stated. He was living at Ramsey in 1540, when he was taxed 123. 6d. on movables in the Lay Subsidy of that year. If he kept the possessions his 8 THE AMERICAN GENEALOGIST father left him, then he owned his father’s dwelling—house, a “pightell” called Waxe, and other lands, as well as a quarter interest in the ship Mary and John. The date of his death is not known, but he was certainly living on 22 Dec. 1554, when his brother Raynold (9HW4-1JW) made his will; and he was apparently still alive on 14 Oct. 1561, when his brother Thomas (L417-K9R) made his will. The name of his Wife (KCN1-LMG) is not known. Probable children: i. ELIZABETH (LHRZ-1K7), b. ca. 1532, living 30 Jan. 1570/1 when her brother John (L4BB-D43) made his will, m. JOHN HAYLE (MMSS-K9V) of Ramsey. Children (surname Hayle): 1. John (LZ2R-25S). 2. Wealthe (K4D9-8JJ). 3. William (LZ2R-2RC). ii. JOHN (L4BB-D43), b. ca. 1534, of Ramsey, co. Essex, yeoman. There is an account of this man and his family in the English Ancestry, pp. 74 and 87-98. He died rather young, between 30 Jan. 1570/1 (the date of his will) and some time later in 1571 (for the will has no exact date of probate). His children were both under the age of 14 at the time of his death. From his will, which is a most interesting one, and which is printed in full in the English Ancestry, pp. 92-98, we derive the impression that he was a wealthy farmer, devoted not only to his children, but also to his sisters and his aunts. In this will, he was styled “John Marvyne.” The name of his wife (MDYD-DB7), who must have predeceased him, is not known. Children (order uncertain): 1. John (KHGC-92B), b. ca. 1558, of Ramsey, yeoman. This man, who was called John Marvine, is described in the English Ancestry, pp. 90 and 128-137. He d. soon after 12 July 1594 (the date of his Will). He m. (1) Gylberd [Gilbert] (KXVY-CVS), daughter of Hierom [Hieronymus, Jerome] Gylberd [Guylberd, Gilbert] (MDYD-5H9), whose splendid family ramifications are set forth in the English Ancestry, pp. 129-131. He apparently m. (2) at Great Bentley, co. Essex, 30 Aug. 1585, Margaret Swallow (M7FF-MMH), who predeceased him. Children by first wife (KXVY-CVS): 1) John “the elder,” (MXJ2-L8N) b. ca. 1582. 2) Edward (K89R-RQF), b. ca. 1584. Children by second wife (M7FF-MMH): 3) John “the younger,” (M7FF-MMJ) b. ca. 1586. 4) Edmund (M7FF-MMG), b. ca. 1588. 2. Robert (KCFC-ZDT), of whom there is an account in the English Ancestry, p. 90. iii. ROGER (KH7C-RV6), b. ca. 1537, is known only from the will of his brother John (KHGC-92B). He and his children are mentioned in the English Ancestry, pp. 74 and 104. The name of his wife (MJ8T-PHF) is not known. Children (at least): 1. John (MJ8T-PCQ). 2. Margaret (MJ8T-58C). ANCESTRY OF REINOLD AND MATTHEW MARVIN 9 Perhaps also: 3. Reinold (MJ8T-5DW). iv. MARGARET (M9YV-YLY), living 30 Jan. 1570/1 when her brother John (KHGC-92B) made his will, m. CLARCKE (LZ6Z-HSQ), of Holbrook, co. Suffolk. Child (surname Clarcke): 1. John (M8XF-ZLD). Pightell = small piece of land

Witnesses; Nicholas Awdley (), curate; Thomas Hurre (); John Blosse the elder (); Robert Blosse (); Thomas Cuckekucke () the younger. Proved, 17 December 1533, by the executors named (P.C.C., 8 Hogan). 2. JOHN MERVYN (M5JY-R6S) (Thomas), of Ramsey, co. Essex, yeoman the testator of 1533, may have been born about 1480. He was of age in 1503, and was co-executor of his father’s will. He died at Ramsey between 16 September 1533 (the date of his will) and 17 December 1533 (the date of probate), and was buried in the Church of St. Michael the Archangel at Ramsey. He is identical with the man whose name Mr. W. T. R. Marvin did not know (though he suspected it might be John), who is No. 7 in the English Ancestry, and appears on pp. 31 and 38-41 in that work. Mr. Marvin, however, believed him to be a son of John (M14P-R9X), and ANCESTRY OF REINOLD AND MATTHEW MARVIN 5 grandson of Roger Mervyn (KNDQ-HCV) of Ipswich; and it has been shown that that belief is erroneous. John Mervyn Was a man of very considerable wealth. In his will, he disposed of lands and tenements in the parishes of Ramsey, Great Oakley [Myche or Much Ockley] and Little Oakley., The names of some of his lands were Janecoxe, Waxe, Bennettes, Rolfes, Nether lands, Gesses, Brandons, and Milkes. He also had interests in the town of Harwich, which he left to his brother Thomas, a resident of that town. John Mervyn married MARGARET (L5GX-1NN) -——, who survived him, and was co-executrix of his will. From the terms of the will, it is obvious that she was the. mother of all his children. She was undoubtedly the “Widow Marvin” (L5GX-1NN) who was taxed 153.on her movables at Ramsey in the Lay Subsidy of 1540 (English Ancestry, p. 38). The date of her death is not known. Children (order uncertain): 5. i. JOHN (9HGG-SBS), “my eldest son,” co-executor of his father ’s will, of age in 1533, b. (say) 1510. 6. ii. RAYNOLD, REINOLD or RYNALDE (9HW4-1JW), under 21 in 1533, b. (say) 1513. 7. iii. THOMAS (L417-K9R), under 21 in 1533. iv RICHARD (LD79-MML), under 21 in 1533. v. He was buried at St. Nicholas ’s Church, Harwich, 29 July 1580. She was bur. there 20 Dec. 1587, leaving a. will, dated 8 Dec. 1587, which was proved 24 Jan. 1587/8. We find on the Harwich Register a John Cooper, of Harwich, who was bur. there 29 July, 1580, who had a wife Margaret, bur. 20 December, 1587, and her Will was proved 24 January, 1587/8. Their children were (1) Roger, b. before 1559; (2) Christian, bap. 16 April, 1560; (3) Richard, bap. 19 July, 1562 ; (4) Owen, bap. 14 August, 1564. The name of the eldest son, Roger, is from John Marvin's Will ; the others are from the Harwich Register ; but as this is the only John recorded at Harwich as having children before 1570, and the only one whose death is found on that record, it seems quite probable that he is the one named in the Will, and that John's "Aunte Cooper " was Margaret. Roger is deemed to be her eldest son, being the only one of her children named by John, who gives him a small legacy, while his bequests to the others are contingent. The name Roger Cooper is often found on Harwich Records ; a Roger was taxed there " on his movables " in 1540, 33-y., 4a1 ., who may have been the father of John, but this remains to be proved. The marriages of a number of that name are also given on the same Record ; but in every case except the one above, so far as my informant observed, the maiden name of the wife is mentioned.* * For some further notes on the Coopers, see No. 25, below.

ROBERT MERVYN or MARVEN (KH4G-VKC) (Thomas), of Ramsey, co. Essex, may have been born about 1490. His father, in his will in 1503, left him only a trunk. An account of this Robert appears in English Ancestry, pp. 42-49. He seems always to have resided at Ramsey, where he held both freehold and copyhold lands, including estates called Bosemans and Bodies. He also held land called Puttytes in the parish of Great Oakley, which he bequeathed to Francis Borflete (LHQP-XQV), eldest son of his sister Ann (LZ64-2YQ). He also bequeathed 20s. apiece to his “godsons” Raynold (9HW4-1JW) and John Marven (9HGG-SBS), the sons of his brother John (M5JY-R6S). Robert died between 10 December 1556 (the date of his will) and 19 January 1556/7 (the date of probate). He married ISABEL (9JHW-LDD), who survived him, and who was the mother of his children. She died between 2 January 1559/60 (the date of her will) and 6 June 1660 (the date of probate). Children (order uncertain): i. Daughter (MHQL-NQL), d. before her father, m. ——- HEWIT (MHQL-N3L). Children (surname Hewit): 1. James (MHQL-NSG). 2. William (LKNP-F8N). ii. Daughter (9H5L-6VJ), perhaps also d. before her father, m. —— BETEBYCHE (9H5L-FLJ). Children (surname Beteryche): 1. Matthew (9H5L-FPS). 2. John (9H5L-F5F). iii. SISSELY (CICELY) (KH8Y-TQ3), m. JOHN BLOSSE (KHR6-TDQ), of Ramsey, perhaps the John Blosse the younger (KHR6-TDQ) mentioned in the will of John Mervyn (M5JY-R6S) (supra). Children (surname Blosse): 1. John (K45R-RM6). 2. Robert (KCL6-Q5C). 3. Thomas (KCW9-8LM). 4. Anne (KDMX-DFW). 5. Bridget (K87N-PHZ). 6. A child (M8X6-K4Y), b. in 1560. Neither Robert or wife Isabel's will's bequeathed anything to any sons, indicating no sons, they bequeathed to Nephews, grandchildren of daughter(s?), and his brother's sons. Robert Marvin of Ramsey, born about 1490 or earlier, as he mentions five or more grandchildren in his will, made 10 December 1556. He married Isabell _____, who survived him. As his will was proved 19 January, 1556/7 he evidently deceased not far from 1 January 1557. Robert was buried in St. Michael's Church, Ramsey. He owned houses and lands, both free and copy-held, in Ramsey, which he gave to his widow in life tenure; estates called "Boseman's" and "Bodies" he conveys under conditions, for L50, to James Hewit or Hughitt, believed to have been his grandson; he also owned land called "Puttyte's", in Great Oakley, which he bequeathed to Francis Borflete, eldest son of his sister Ann. He had been a resident of Ramsey for many years before his death, as he was taxed ten shillings on his "movables' in the parish in 1540. Robert's will does not name his children, but seems to indicate that he had three daughters and no sons.

RAYNOLD, REINOLD or RYNALDE MERVYN or MARVEN (9HW4-1JW) (John, Thomas), of Ramsey, co. Essex, yeoman, was under 21 when his father made his will in 1533, and may have been born about 1513. He and his family are described in the English Ancestry, pp. 39 and 75-81; and in Descendants, pp. 13-17 and 19-20, but his parentage is not definitely stated there. He was living in Ramsey, and was taxed 20s. on movables in the Lay Subsidy of 1540. He had received from his father (M5JY-R6S) a tenement called Bennettes in Ramsey (which he in turn bequeathed to his son Richard (L222-CW2)), and he seems to have acquired other lands, both in Ramsey and in the adjoining parish of Wrabness. His will was dated 22 December 1554, but bears no date of probate. If he was the “godson Reynollde Marven” mentioned in the will of his uncle Robert (KH4G-VKC) (supra), then he must have been still living on 10 December 1556; but he certainly died before 14 October 1561, when he was called “late deceased” in the will of his brother Thomas (L417-K9R). He married JOHAN———— (LHN6-1WT), who survived him, and was sole executrix of his will. Children (order uncertain, and all under 21 in 1554): i. RICHARD (L222-CW2), named first in his father’s will, in which he received the tenement called Bennettes; probably the eldest son. 8. ii. EDWARD (L9C6-MZJ), named second in his father ’s will. iii. JOHN (KLLZ-1CZ), named third in his father ’s will, in which he received a tenement called_Genettes in Ramsey parish. He is mentioned in the English Ancestry, pp. 77 and 115-119, and in Descendants, p. 20. Mr. W. T. R. Marvin () believed that he removed to the neighboring parish of Little Oakley, co. Essex, and died there in March 1584/5, leaving a will dated 5 March, and being buried at St. Mary’s Church, Little Oakley, 8 March 1584/5. If this identification is correct, John m. Anne (M67F-99W), under age in March 1584/5. iv. AUDREY (K486-2CM), who, according to her father ’s will, was to receive £10 at the age of 20 or at marriage. v. MARGERY (L4BD-6SR), who, according to her father ’s will, was to receive £10 at the age of 20 or at marriage. vi. BARBARA (L222-CMS), who, according to her father’s will, was to receive £10 at the age of 20 or at marriage. She apparently m. JOHN WADE (LZWW-44S) of Ramsey and Little Oakley, and had issue. THOMAS MERVYN (L417-KSC) (Thomas), of Ramsey and later of Harwich, co. Essex, may have been born about 1485. His father 6 THE AMERICAN GENEALOGIST left him his houses in Harwich, and Thomas resided in that town most of his life. An account of this Thomas (L417-KSC) appears in the English Ancestry, pp. 32 and 50-65, but Mr. W. T. R. Marvin erroneously believed that this Thomas (L417-KSC) was the son of a certain Thomas Mervyn () of Ipswich, and did not realize that he was a brother of John (M5JY-R6S) and Robert Mervyn (KH4G-VKC), of Ramsey. Thomas Mervyn (L417-KSC) of Harwich was supervisor of the will of his brother John (9HGG-SBS) in 1533, and received in that will a “garthing plate” in Harwich, and all the testator’s_ bows and arrows. Thomas Mervyn seems to have been a shop—keeper at Harwich, although he was styled “of Harwich and Dovercourt” in the Lay Subsidy of 1540, in which he was taxed 15s. on movables. He died at Harwich late in 1550, between 18 November (the date of his will) and 17 December (the date of probate). He married ANNE (MY9B-SGH), who was the mother of all his children. She died in 1558, between 20 March (the date of her will) and 30 December (the date of probate). A lot of information about the Mervyn family comes from her will, which is printed in full in English Ancestry, pp. 59-64. Children (order uncertain): i. Daughter (ELIZABETH ?) (L2Y8-XLQ), m. Roger HAWKYN or HAWKINS (L2Y8-2D8), apparently of Harwich. Children (surname Hawkyn or Hawkins): 1. John (L2Y8-22L). 2. Roger (L2Y8-25T). 3. Henry (L2Y8-2YF). 4. Thomas (L2Y8-L9C). 5. Rose (L2Y8-L37). 6. Elizabeth (L2Y8-L7R). ii. Daughter (MJMM-KX3), m. CAUSSTON (K8ZT-W9S) a, farmer. They had three children living and under age in 1558, according to Anne Mervyn’s (MY9B-SGH) will. iii. THOMAS (M7FX-1YN), perhaps the Thomas Marvin bur. at Harwich 8 Oct. 1577. He: m. Elizabeth (M7FX-1YG) Children, mentioned in the will of Anne Mervyn (MY9B-SGH): 1. Thomas (M7FX-1YT). 2. Anne (M7FX-1B9). iv. Daughter (KDS5-R49), m. JOHN BARKER (MFPL-K7M), clothier, of Bylston, co. Suffolk, who was co-executor of the will of Anne Mervyn (MY9B-SGH). They had several children. v. Daughter (L2Y8-NRY), m. JOHN LAME (LAMB ?) (9JFG-Q46), of Trimley, co. Suffolk, who was co-executor of the will of Anne Mervyn (MY9B-SGH). Children (surname Lame): 1. Adam (MNRW-SNN). 2. Richard (KF8L-6F5). vi. Daughter (perhaps ELLEN) (L5G9-KL3), m. THOMAS RYCHEMAN (MJ8T-5DP), of Ramsey. This daughter appears to have been unmarried when her ANCESTRY OF REINOLD AND MATTHEW MARVIN 7 father made his will in 1550, and dead before her mother made hers in 1558. See English Ancestry, pp. 57, 58. Children (surname Rycheman): 1. Anne (MJ8T-5XW). 2. Agnes (MJ8T-5XK).

In the will Thomas receivedd a tenement called Rolfes and Nether lands and Gesses after his mother's death and also 10 pounds at the age of 21. He must later have acquired a tenement called Brandons in Little Oakley parish. Brandons had belonged to John Mervyn the father of Thomas and ad been bequeathed by him in 1533 to his son Richard. Richard evidently without issue and Brandons was inherited by his brother Thomas. Thomas Mervyn also held property in Suffolk. There is an account of him and his family in the English Ancestry p 39 and 81-95 through his parentage is not there definitely stated. His will was dated 14 Oct 1561 but bore no date of probate. Essex, dated 23 August 1503. He bequeathed to his wife (L5Z2-MMX) one half of his household stuff and all the stuff she brought with her on their marriage; also his lands at the Churchgate of Ramsey, to her and her heirs forever. To his son Thomas (L417-KSC), his houses in Herwych [Harwich, co. Essex], to him and his heirs forever. To his son Robert (KH4G-VKC), a. trunk. To his four daughters (), £10. To John Flecher (), his part of the quay in Herwych, he paying the testator’s executors 40s. Executors: His wife Christian Merveyn (L5Z2-MMX), his son John Merveyn (M5JY-R6S), and Thomas Gray (). To his son John (M5JY-R6S), his house at Bridge with all the lands thereunto belonging and [lands at] Kent in the Soken, to him and his heirs forever. Witnesses to this nuncupative Will: John Cuko (); John Rande (); Water Hunt (); Reynold Edgar (), bailly of Herwych; George Hasketh (); Thomas Doye (); Lawrence Yong (); William Pyerce (); Emme White (); John Perdryche (). Proved, 11 April 1504, by John Wro (), proctor to the executors (P.C.G., 5 Holgrave). 1. THOMAS MERVYN(or MERVEYN) (9H8X-RHH),of Ramsey, co. Essex, the testator of 1503, may by a bare possibility have been the son of Robert Mervyn () of Ipswich, co. Suffolk (No. 3 in English Ancestry, pp. 25-30). It will be noticed that the testator of 1503 named a son Robert (KH4G-VKC). This suggestion is, however, of an extremely tentative variety, for there is no proof at all of this identification. Thomas Mervyn (9H8X-RHH) was obviously a man of considerable substance. He bequeathed property at Ramsey, at Harwich, and elsewhere in the neighborhood. He may have married more than once, and it is not possible to judge from the terms of his will whether his wife CHRISTIAN (L5Z2-MMX) was the mother of his children, or not. She survived him, and was co-executrix of his will. Thomas Mervyn (Merveyn) (9H8X-RHH) probably died soon after 23 Aug. 1503, the date of his will, and certainly before 11 April 1504, the date of probate. He was buried in the Church of St. Michael the Archangel at Ramsey. Children (order unknown): 2. i. JOHN (M5JY-R6S), co—executor of his father’s will, and therefore probably the eldest son, b. (say) 1480. 3. ii. THOMAS (L417-KSC), b. (say) 1485. 4. iii. ROBERT (KH4G-VKC), b. (say) 1490. iv. Daughter (M1F6-5J2), living in 1503. v. Daughter (9HGB-WSZ), living in 1503. vi. Daughter (LT5S-WHZ), living in 1503. vii. ANN (LZ64-2YQ) (No. 9 in English Ancestry, pp. 31, 50), living in 1503. She was apparently the youngest of this family. She m. ROBERT BORFLETE (L2Y8-VN6), seemingly a. resident of Harwich or Dovercourt, co. Essex. She, her husband and children were mentioned in the will of her brother Robert (KH4G-VKC) (English Ancestry, pp. 44-47). This will was dated 10 Dec. 1556, and the Borflete children were then all under 21. Children (surname Borflete): 1. Francis (LHQP-XQV). 2. Robert (MQGW-DN1). 3. Thomas (MQGW-DLD). 4. John (MQGW-DKW). 5. Mary (L2Y8-KCC).

- Birth: Rome, Roman Empire
- Title Of Nobility: Empress of the Roman Empire
- House: "gens" Valeria: (Date and Place unknown)
- LifeSketch: Some years after divorcing Aelia Paetina, in 38 or early 39, Claudius married Valeria Messalina, who was his first cousin once removed and closely allied with Caligula's circle. Shortly thereafter, she gave birth to a daughter, Claudia Octavia. A son, first named Tiberius Claudius Germanicus, and later known as Britannicus, was born just after Claudius' accession. This marriage ended in tragedy. The ancient historians allege that Messalina was a nymphomaniac who was regularly unfaithful to Claudius—Tacitus states she went so far as to compete with a prostitute to see who could have the most sexual partners in a night—and manipulated his policies to amass wealth. In 48, Messalina married her lover Gaius Silius in a public ceremony while Claudius was at Ostia. Sources disagree as to whether or not she divorced the Emperor first, and whether the intention was to usurp the throne. Under Roman law, the spouse needed to be informed that he or she had been divorced before a new marriage could take place; the sources state that Claudius was in total ignorance until after the marriage. Scramuzza, in his biography, suggests that Silius may have convinced Messalina that Claudius was doomed, and the union was her only hope of retaining rank and protecting her children. The historian Tacitus suggests that Claudius's ongoing term as Censor may have prevented him from noticing the affair before it reached such a critical point. Whatever the case, the result was the execution of Silius, Messalina, and most of her circle.

- Birth: 73 BC, Roma, Roman Republic
- LifeSketch: Pompey's fifth wife was Cornelia, daughter of Metellus Scipio and widow of Publius Crassus. She was young enough to have been married to his sons, but the marriage appears to have been a loving one like the one with Julia. During the civil war, Cornelia stayed on Lesbos. Pompey joined her there and from there they went to Egypt where Pompey was killed. *********** Wikipedia Cornelia Metella (c. 73 BC – after 48 BC)[1] was the daughter of Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius Scipio Nasica (who was a consul in 52 BC and originally from the gens Cornelia). She appears in numerous literary sources, including an official dedicatory inscription at Pergamon.[2] Biography Plutarch describes her as a beautiful woman of good character, well read and a skilled player of the lyre. She was also very well educated in geometry and philosophy. Cornelia was first married to Publius Licinius Crassus, son of Marcus Licinius Crassus, in 55 or 54 BC, when he returned to Rome after serving under Julius Caesar in Gaul. After her first husband's death at the Battle of Carrhae, Cornelia became the fifth wife of Pompey in 52 BC. She was a faithful follower of Pompey and met him in Mytilene with his son Sextus Pompeius, after the Battle of Pharsalus in 48 BC. Together, they fled to Egypt where Pompey was murdered. On his arrival, Caesar punished the murderers of Pompey and gave Cornelia his ashes and signet ring. She returned to Rome and spent the rest of her life in Pompey's estates in Italy.

- LifeSketch: Angharad ferch Meurig was a 9th-century Welsh noblewoman. She was the wife of Rhodri the Great of Gwynedd, and mother of Anarawd (Rhodri's successor), Cadell ap Rhodri, and Merfyn. «b»Life«/b» Angharad was the daughter of Meurig, evidently the King of Seisyllwg in southwestern Wales. She married Rhodri Mawr of Gwynedd, who held power over much of Wales. Her brother Gwgon succeeded their father to the throne of Seisyllwg, but he drowned without an heir in 872. Subsequently, Angharad and Rhodri became caretakers of his kingdom. Rhodri had no standing to take the kingship himself, but the family connection allowed him to install his second son, Cadell, as king. Their first son, Anarawd, later succeeded Rhodri in Gwynedd. Their third son, Merfyn, is sometimes said to have been installed as King of Powys. «b»Biography«/b» Angharad ferch Meurig was a 9th-century Welsh noblewoman. «b»Parentage«/b» Angharad was the daughter of Meurig, evidently the King of Seisyllwg in southwestern Wales. «b»Marriage«/b» Angharad married Rhodri ap Merfyn "Mawr/the Great", son of Merfyn "Frych/the Freckled" ap Gwriad King of Gwynedd & his wife Nest of Powys (-killed Anglesey 878). This addition to his realm must have been made soon after 872, when Gwgon, the last of the kings of Ceredigion, met his death by drowning; Rhodri's marriage to Angharad, the dead king's sister, while it gave him no sort of legal claim to the province, made it easy for him to intervene and invested his sons with rights there which would be more generally recognised. «b»Death«/b» Death: BET 864 AND 920 Anglesey, Wales «b»Issue«/b» 1.) Anarawd, their first son, later succeeded Rhodri in Gwynedd. 2.) their third son, is sometimes said to have been installed as King of Powys «b»Known Children:«/b» 1.) The will of Richard Clark in January 1677 made Theophilus Whale his executor, gave Whale his "woodland ground" and gave his goddaughter, Elizabeth Whale, a cow calf. Further, Whale was involved in two land transfers in January 1680, and finally in the following month he conveyed to Robert Beverley all of his land in Rappahannock County including the place where he had been living, and appointed an attorney to confirm the same, signing the action "Theophilus Wealle".

- Also known as: john miles
- LifeSketch: John immigrated before September 3rd, 1652 when Henry Sloane claimed he transported him and 8 others. [Who is Henry Sloane?] John Mills paid a poll tax in Lancaster (later Old Rappahannock now Essex) County Virginia on February 6, 1654. Only for himself, so no freemen above 16, imported servants or negroes or Indian servants above 16 in his household. Following that are a long series of deeds in old Rappahannock County. William Johnson sold John Mills rights to 100 acres of land on June 16th, 1656. John got a patent for 562 acres on November 18, 1663. On February 7, 1665 John recorded a deed of "one cow named Crow and all her increase both male and female" do unto "my daughter Eliza Mills" (wedding gift/dowery). On December 27th, 1665, Thomas Powell sold John Mills 50 acres. This will was signed in the presence of John's wife named "Joane Mills." On July 5th, 1666, Phillip Saunders signs a deed describing the property line as a half point west "from the corner tree of John Mills." Similarly, an indenture on August 28th, 1668 spells out an agreement "already marked out by John Mills." John married a second time to a woman named Mary (maiden name unknown) when he named her as his "wife Mary" on a deed dated January 10th, 1672. His first wife Joane died after December 27th, 1665. John made his will March 5th 1682/3 (probated June 26, 1683), to his son Robert Mills (140 acres), to son John Mills (140 acres "bounding upon his brother Robert), with the remaining land to be equally divided betwixt the two younger brothers Henry and James Mills. To my daughters Martha and Jane "one heifer apiece" (same as daughter Eliza) along with other livestock to the younger sons and mentions household items "they are not to take out of the house as long as the aforesaid James Mills doth stay with his mother."

- Father: Dyfnwal Moelmud ap CLYDNO
- Mother: Tonnuenna DES SICAMBRES
- Birth: England
- Residence: (Date and Place unknown)
- Also known as: Belinus Brenne des Sicambres
- Title Of Nobility: 16th Duke of Cornwall
- LifeSketch: Belinus the Great was a legendary king of the Britons, as recounted by Geoffrey of Monmouth. He was the son of Dunvallo Molmutius and brother of Brennius. He was probably named after the ancient god Belenus. In an effort to win the crown of Britain, Brennius and Belinus waged war between each other to determine who should succeed their father. Many battles were fought between the two brothers until a time came when their friends intervened and a compromise was decided upon. Belinus became the King of the Britons with Brennius as king of the north. Five years later, Brennius wed the daughter of the King of Norway without consulting Belinus. Belinus invaded Northumberland and seized Brennius's land. The King of Denmark with Brennius's new wife landed in Britain by accident. Belinus imprisoned them and awaited the return of his brother. Brennius landed in Albany and demanded the return of all his lands and his wife. If not, he swore he would kill Belinus if they ever met in battle. Belinus called to arms all of Britain against Brennius and the two armies met in the forests of Calaterium. The battle was fought ruthlessly and Belinus defeated the army of Brennius. Brennius fled to Gaul and Belinus became king over all the Britons. He emphasized the Molmutine Laws of his father and ruled justly. Eventually, Brennius invaded Britain behind a massive Gallic army and met Belinus on the battlefield once again. Their mother, however, convinced Brennius to make peace, and the two brothers ruled their two realms in harmony with each other. Following their unification, Belinus and Brennius merged their armies into one great one and invaded Gaul. According to the story, after a year of warfare, the joint army managed to submit all the Frankish kingdoms in Gaul to their authority. Now with an even greater army, Belinus led his great army to the Italian peninsula and threatened to invade Rome. Outside Rome the two consuls, Gabias and Porsenna, sued for peace and offered wealth, tribute, and hostages as a sign of their submission. Belinus and Brennius accepted and took their great army to Germany. Soon after this movement north, Rome broke the treaty and marched north and Brennius went to fight the Romans while Belinus remained at war with the Germans (who were being helped by various other Italian troops). After Brennius had left, the Italian troops who were reinforcing the Germans abandoned the Germans in a vain attempt to unite with the Roman soldiers on the other side of Belinus's army. Belinus learned of this and moved his army to a valley through which the Italians had to pass. In the morning, Belinus attacked the Italians, who were not in armour and were unprepared for battle at that point in time. All day the Britons pursued the Italians until it was night. Belinus decided to join forces with his brother, who was besieging Rome. The Romans defended the city for many days and were successful in repelling the invaders. At last, Belinus decided to hang the hostages they were given in the treaty, but it only enraged the Romans more. Finally, the two consuls put on armour and joined the men defending the city. They pushed the invaders back but Belinus was able to reform the lines and stop the attacks. Belinus continued forward until the walls were breached and the Britons invaded the city. Belinus left Brennius in Rome and returned to Britain. He ruled in peace, building many new cities and restoring many decaying ones. Most important of the cities he founded was Kaerusc, which would be renamed Caerleon or the City of Legions when the Romans occupied Britain. (This was the first reference to Caerleon-upon-Usk in Geoffrey's history.) Belinus continued using many of his father's laws and enacted a number of his own. Britain became more wealthy than ever before in this time. When Belinus finally died, he was cremated and placed on top of a great tower he had created. He was succeeded by his son Gurguit Barbtruc. Comments on historicity Rome was indeed captured by one Brennus following the Battle of the Allia on 18 July 390 BCE. Gabias and Porsenna are not mentioned in any Roman sources. The latter is a namesake of Lars Porsena, a King of the Etruscans who is believed to have fought against the recently founded Roman Republic around 500 BCE.
