- LifeSketch: From Wikipedia - Marcus Maecilius Flavius Eparchius Avitus[i] c. 380/395[1] – after 17 October 456 or in 457) was Western Roman Emperor from 8 or 9 July 455 to 17 October 456. He was a senator and a high-ranking officer both in the civil and military administration, as well as Bishop of Piacenza. A Gallo-Roman aristocrat, he opposed the reduction of the Western Roman Empire to Italy alone, both politically and from an administrative point of view. For this reason, as Emperor he introduced several Gallic senators in the Imperial administration; this policy, however, was opposed by the Senatorial aristocracy and by the people of Rome, who had suffered from the sack of the city by the Vandals in 455. Avitus had a good relationship with the Visigoths, in particular with their king Theodoric II, who was a friend of his and who acclaimed Avitus Emperor. The possibility of a strong and useful alliance between the Visigoths and Romans faded, however, when Theodoric invaded Hispania at Avitus' behest, which rendered him unable to help Avitus against the rebel Roman generals who deposed him. Origins and early career Avitus was born in Clermont to a family of the Gallo-Roman nobility. His father was possibly Flavius Julius Agricola, consul in 421. Avitus had two sons, Agricola (fl 455 – living 507, a vir illustris) and Ecdicius Avitus (later patricius and magister militum under Emperor Julius Nepos) and a daughter Papianilla; she married Sidonius Apollinaris, whose letters and panegyrics remain an important source for Avitus' life and times. Avitus followed a course of study typical for a young man of his rank, including law. Before 421 he was sent to the powerful patricius Flavius Constantius (briefly Emperor in 421) to ask for a tax reduction for his own country; this embassy was successful. His relative Theodorus was hostage at the court of the King of Visigoths, Theodoric I. In 425/426 Avitus went and met him and the King, who let Avitus enter his own court. Here, around 439, Avitus met the son of Theodoric, Theodoric II, who later became King. Avitus inspired the young Theodoric to study Latin poets. He then started a military career serving under the magister militum Aetius in his campaign against the Juthungi and the Norics (430–431) and against the Burgundians (436). In 437, after being elevated to the rank of vir illustris, he returned to Avernia, where he held a high office, probably magister militum per Gallias. In the same year he defeated a group of Hunnic raiders near Clermont and obliged Theodoric to lift the siege of Narbonne. In 439 he became Praetorian prefect of Gaul and renewed the friendship treaty with the Visigoths. Before the summer of 440, he retired to private life at his estate, Avitacum, near Clermont. Here he lived until 451 when the Huns, led by Attila, invaded the Western Roman Empire; Avitus persuaded Theodoric into an alliance with Rome, and the combined forces of Theodoric and Aetius defeated Attila in the Battle of Châlons; Theodoric died in the battle. Rise to the throne Petronius Maximus, who obtained the throne at the death of Valentinian III, recalled Avitus from his private life and sent him to ask for support to the Visigoths, but, at the death of Maximus, they acclaimed Avitus Emperor In the late spring of 455, Avitus was recalled to service by emperor Petronius Maximus and was elevated to the rank of magister militum, probably praesentalis; Maximus sent Avitus in an embassy to the court of Theodoric II, who had succeeded to his father, at Toulouse. This embassy probably confirmed the new king and his people as foederati of the Empire and asked for their support for the new Emperor.[2] While Avitus was at Theodoric's court, news came of the death of Petronius Maximus (31 May) and of the sack of Rome by the Vandals of Gaiseric. Theodoric acclaimed Avitus Emperor in Toulouse; on 9 July,[3] the new Emperor was acclaimed by the Gallic chiefs gathered in Viernum,[4] near Arelate (Arles), and later, around 5 August, before Avitus reached Rome, he received the recognition of the Roman Senate.[5] Avitus stayed in Gaul for three months, to consolidate his power in the region that was the center of his support, and later went to Italy with a Gallic army, probably reinforced with a Gothic force. He probably travelled to Noricum to restore the imperial authority in that province, and then passed through Ravenna, where he left a Gothic force under the new patricius and magister militum Remistus, a Visigoth. On 21 September, finally, he entered Rome.[6] Consolidation of power The effective power of Avitus depended on the support of all the major players in the Western Roman Empire in the mid-5th century. The new Emperor needed the support of both the civil institutions, the Roman senate and the Eastern Roman Emperor Marcian, as well as that of the army and its commanders (the generals Majorian and Ricimer) and the Vandals of Gaiseric. On 1 January 456, Avitus took the consulate,[7] as traditionally the Emperors held the consulate in the first year upon assuming the purple. However, his consulate sine collega (without a second Consul) was not recognised by the Eastern court, which nominated two consuls, Iohannes and Varanes. The fact that the two courts did not agree on a couple of consuls but each nominated its own means that despite the efforts of Avitus to receive the recognition of the Eastern Emperor,[8] the relationship between the two halves of the Empire was not optimal. Foreign policy Treaties under Marcian and a treaty of 442 between emperor Valentinian III and the Vandal king Gaiseric had failed to reduce Vandal incursions and raids along the Italian coast. Avitus' own efforts secured a temporary winter truce with them; but in March 456, Vandals destroyed Capua. Avitus sent Ricimer to defend Sicily, and the Romans defeated the Vandals twice, once in a land battle near Agrigento and another in a naval battle off Corsica.[9] During the reign of Avitus, the Visigoths expanded into Hispania, nominally under Roman authorisation but actually to promote their own interests. In 455 Avitus had sent an ambassador, comes Fronto, to the Suebi and then to Theodoric II to ask them to formally recognise Roman rule. When the Suebi invaded the Roman province of Hispania Tarraconensis, the Visigoths attacked and defeated them 5 October 456 at the Campus Paramus, twelve miles from Astorga, on the banks of the Órbigo (Urbicus),[10] subsequently occupying the province as nominal foederati of the Empire. Fall Majorian, comes domesticorum of Avitus, and Ricimer, a general of barbaric descent, rebelled against their Emperor, defeated him near Piacenza, and obliged him to become Bishop of the city. It was Majorian who succeeded Avitus on the throne. In the meantime, resentment amongst the population of Italy against the foreigner Avitus grew. The Gallo-Roman Emperor had given to other members of the Gallo-Roman aristocracy many key offices of the public administration usually filled by Romans. Furthermore, the population of Rome, devastated by the sack of Rome, suffered from food shortages due to the Vandal control of the naval routes, aggravated by the requirements of the foreign troops that had arrived with Avitus. The imperial treasury was almost empty and, after disbanding his Visigoth guard because of popular pressure, Avitus was obliged to pay their huge wages by melting down and selling the bronze of some statues.[11] Counting on the popular discontent, on the disbandment of the imperial guard, and on the prestige gained through their victories, Ricimer and the comes domesticorum Majorian rebelled against Avitus; the Emperor was obliged to leave Rome in early autumn and to move north. Ricimer had the Roman Senate depose Avitus and ordered the murder of the magister militum Remistus in the Palatium at Classe, ancient port of Ravenna, on 17 September 456.[12] Avitus decided to react. First he chose Messianus, one of his collaborators in his embassy to the Visigoths ordered by Petronius Maximus, as the new magister militum; then he probably went to Gaul (Hydatius says to Arelate)[13] to collect all the available forces, probably the Visigoth guard he had just disbanded; finally he led his forces against the troops of Ricimer, near Piacenza. The Emperor and his army entered the city and attacked the huge army led by Ricimer, but after a great massacre of his men, including Messianus, Avitus fled on 17 or 18 October 456. In the immediate aftermath Ricimer spared his life, but forced him to become Bishop of Piacenza.[14] Death Avitus' Gallic supporters may still have recognised him as emperor, despite his deposition. Sidonius Apollinaris tells of a failed coup d'état in Gaul organised by one Marcellus[15] and probably aimed at bringing Avitus back on the throne.[16] The contemporary historian Hydatius, who lived in Spain, considered the year 457 the third of Avitus' reign;[17] Avitus' own intentions are not known, nor are the manner and date of his death, of which there are several versions. In some, he was told that the Roman Senate had condemned him to death, and so he tried to flee to Gaul, officially travelling there to bring donations to the basilica of Saint Julian in Avernia, his homeland; according to Gregory of Tours, he died during this journey.[18] Other sources have him strangled or starved to death, by order of his successor. Avitus died in 457, or late 456.

- Father: Arsames Prince of PERSIA
- Birth: 580 BC, Iran
- Also known as: Greek: Ὑστάσπης
- Also known as: Vishtaspa (Old Persian:𐎻𐏁𐎫𐎠𐎿𐎱, Vištāspa)
- Also known as: Modern Persian: Gustasp
- Title Of Nobility: Persian Satrap of Bactria and Persis under Cambyses, and probably under Cyrus the Great
- LifeSketch: "Hystaspes, a very wise monarch, the father of Darius. Who while boldly penetrating into the remoter districts of upper India, came to a certain woody retreat, of which with its tranquil silence the Brahmans, men of sublime genius, were the possessors. From their teaching he learnt the principles of the motion of the world and of the stars, and the pure rites of sacrifice, as far as he could; and of what he learnt he infused some portion into the minds of the Magi, which they have handed down by tradition to later ages, each instructing his own children, and adding to it their own system of divination." — Ammianus Marcellinus, "XXIII. 6." Hystaspes was a member of the Persian royal house of the Achaemenids. He was satrap of Persis under Cambyses, and probably under Cyrus the Great also. He accompanied Cyrus on his expedition against the Massagetae. However, he was sent back to Persis to keep watch over his eldest son, Darius, whom Cyrus, after a dream, suspected of considering treason. Ammianus Marcellinus makes him a chief of the Magians, and tells a story of his studying in India under the Brahmins, an event that would correspond to the Achaemenid conquest of the Indus Valley. In ancient sources, Hystaspes sometimes is considered to be identical with Vishtaspa (the Avestan name for Hystapes), an early patron of Zoroaster. The name of Hystaspes occurs in the inscriptions at Persepolis and in the Behistun Inscription, where the full lineage of Darius the Great is given: "King Darius says: My father is Hystaspes [Vištâspa]; the father of Hystaspes was Arsames [Aršâma]; the father of Arsames was Ariaramnes [Ariyâramna]; the father of Ariaramnes was Teispes [Cišpiš]; the father of Teispes was Achaemenes [Haxâmaniš]. King Darius says: That is why we are called Achaemenids; from antiquity we have been noble; from antiquity has our dynasty been royal. King Darius says: Eight of my dynasty were kings before me; I am the ninth. Nine in succession we have been kings. King Darius says: By the grace of Ahuramazda am I king; Ahuramazda has granted me the kingdom." — Behistun Inscription -- Wikiwand: Hystaspes (father of Darius I)

- Father: Vasak BAGRATUNI of Armenia
- Mother: Gurgen GURAM
- Birth: ABT 690, Armênia
- Title Of Nobility: Ishkhan - presiding prince of Armenia
- LifeSketch: Ashot III Bagratuni also known as Ashot the Blind (Armenian: Աշոտ Կուրացյալ) (c. 690 – 762) was a member of the Bagratuni family who was presiding prince of Armenia as ishkhan from 732 to 748. He was the nephew of Smbat VI Bagratuni. He had two sons, Smbat VII Bagratuni and Vasak Bagratuni. He won the favour of the Umayyad Caliphate by defeating one of the emirs who had revolted against Damascus and attacked Armenia. His ascension signaled the coming to power of the Bagratids. He was blinded by the rival nobles of the Mamikonian clan. The new power of Armenia had reached such a level that the country, at short notice, could summon an army of 90,000 men, ready to be sent out to battle.

- he was condemned to death and was thrown to be devoured by the beasts in the Hippodrome of Constantinople: but was pardoned at the last minute by Byzantine emperor Maurice
- Title Of Nobility: Marzban of Persian Armenia
- LifeSketch: Smbat IV Bagratuni (Armenian: Սմբատ Դ Բագրատունի; Greek: Συμβάτιος) was an Armenian prince from the Bagratuni Dynasty who served first in the Byzantine army before switching, ca. 595, to the Sasanian Empire, where he had a distinguished military career and earned high honours until his death in 616. He was succeeded by his son, Varaztirots. Smbat was the son of Manuel Bagratuni. He is first mentioned some time in the 580s, when the Byzantine emperor Maurice (r. 582–602) requested the Armenian nobles to raise cavalry for service in his wars against the Avars. Smbat and Sahak Mamikonian led a thousand-strong unit each to Constantinople, where they were richly rewarded and sent home. Sebeos also adds that Maurice supposedly adopted Smbat at this occasion. In 589, however, Smbat led a rebellion against the Byzantines, was captured and sent to Constantinople, where he was condemned to death and was thrown to be devoured by the beasts in the Hippodrome of Constantinople. He was pardoned at the last minute by Maurice, who then banished him to some "distant islands" and later to Africa. Smbat returned from exile some time after, and entered the service of the Sasanian shah Khosrow II, who in 595 appointed him marzban (military governor) of Hyrcania (the southern coastlands of the Caspian Sea). Smbat served in this post until 602, but was initially employed in suppressing the rebellion of Vistahm in Khorasan, before being recalled to reside at the royal court in Ctesiphon. There he received further honours, and was also appointed Lesser Minister of Finance. In ca. 607 ("the eighteenth year of Khosrow's reign") he was sent back to Armenia with extensive powers as "Commander of the army of the lords of houses". His tenure in Armenia was short but productive: as N. Garsoian writes, "Smbat’s extraordinary powers allowed him to reaffirm the authority of the Persian crown in Persarmenia, to restore the prestige of the weakened Armenian Church by summoning a council that elected a new katholikos, Abraham I, after a vacancy of three years, and to rebuild the cathedral of the Armenian administrative capital of Duin, overriding the objections of the local Persian authorities". In the next year, Smbat received the honorific title Khosrow Shun ("the Joy or Satisfaction of Khosrow"), and about this time led a campaign on behalf of Khosrow against the Hephthalites, whom he defeated, possibly killing their king in single combat. After that, he retired to the royal court, where he lived amidst the honours accorded to him by Khosrow until his death in 616. He was succeeded by his son, Varaztirots.

Smbat VII Bagratuni (Armenian: Սմբատ Է Բագրատունի; died 25 April 775) was an Armenian noble of the Bagratuni (Bagratid) family. He and his brother Vasak were the sons of Ashot III Bagratuni. He served as presiding prince of Armenia in 761–775, playing a leading role in the Armenian rebellion of 774–775 against the Abbasid Caliphate. He was killed in the Battle of Bagrevand. He was the father of Ashot Msaker, who restored the family's fortunes in the early 9th century. _________________ SMBAT, son of ASHOT "the Blind" [Bagratid-Georgia] & his wife --- (735-killed in battle Bagrevand 15 Apr 775). Kirakos Ganjaketsi's History of Armenia records that "Smbat" succeeded as marzpan of Armenia after the death of "Ashot Bagratuni" and ruled for 22 years, but does not mention any family relationship between them. According to Garsoïan, Smbat was the son of Ashot "the Blind" but it is unclear from her text on which primary source this is based. He was appointed sparapet in Armenia in 753. He joined the Armenian rebellion of 774 against Arab domination, but was defeated and killed in battle by Arab forces on the banks of the Euphrates river. m --- of Mamikonian, daughter of SAMUEL II Prince of Mamikonian & his wife --- (740-). Her parentage and marriage are confirmed by Ghevond Vardapeti who names "Samuel seigneur du domaine de la famillle de Mamikonian…beau-père du commandant" among those killed in the battle of Bagrevand. Smbat & his wife had two children: 1. ASHOT Bagratuni "Msaker/the meat- or man-eater" (765-826). Kirakos Ganjaketsi's History of Armenia records that "Ashot Msaker" succeeded as marzpan of Armenia after "Smbat" and ruled for 20 years, but does not mention any family relationship between them. The Tables chronologiques of Samuel of Ani record "Achot-Msaker, fils de Sembat, [et] père de Sembat le Confesseur" between 780 and 820, adding that he was "du village de Cacaz, canton de Mazaz". After his father's defeat, Ashot took refuge in his mountain domain in north-western Sper from where he carried out guerrilla activity against the Arabs. He was appointed išxan of Armenia by the Caliph in 804. On his death, the Caliphate divided his territories between his two sons. m ---. The name of Ashot's wife is not known. Ashot & his wife had 4 children: a) BAGRAT Bagratuni (-Baghdad after 851). The primary source which confirms his parentage has not yet been identified. He succeeded his father in 826 as išxanac išxan [Prince of Princes] in the southern Armenian territories of Taron and Sasun. - PRINCES of TARON. b) SMBAT Bagratuni “Khostovanogh/the Confessor” (795-Samarra after 862, bur Chapel of St Daniel). The Tables chronologiques of Samuel of Ani record "Achot-Msaker, fils de Sembat, [et] père de Sembat le Confesseur" between 780 and 820. Kirakos Ganjaketsi's History of Armenia records that "Ashot's son Smbat…called Ablabas" succeeded his father as marzpan of Armenia and ruled for 35 years, recording that he built the chapel (kawaran) at "Erazgawors which is presently called Shirakawan". Having been a hostage at the court of the Abbasid Caliph, he was appointed sparapet in Armenia on the death of his father, ruling in the northern domains of Sper and Tayk. After quarrelling with his brother, Smbat refused to join the 851 rebellion against the Caliphate which enabled the latter to increase its control over southern Armenia. In 853, northern Armenia was also overrun. Smbat was captured, taken to Samarra, where he refused apostasy and later died. The Georgian Chronicle records that "world-ruler Smbat, king of Armenia" was captured "in the city of Duin" and killed after being tortured for one year by "Bugha". Kirakos Ganjaketsi's History of Armenia records that "Bugha…ravaged Armenia through treachery and led away many people to Samara in captivity" and took "Smbat asparapet of Armenia to Jafar" who put him in jail where he refused to apostasize, thereby inheriting his name "the Confessor". The Tables chronologiques of Samuel of Ani record the burial of "Sembat le Confesseur…dans la chapelle du martyr S. Daniel". m HRIPSIME, daughter of --- (800-). The primary source which confirms her marriage has not yet been identified. Smbat & his wife had three children: i) ASHOT Bagratuni (820-890, bur Bagran). Kirakos Ganjaketsi's History of Armenia records that "his son Ashot ruled the kingdom" after the death of "Smbat…the Confessor". He was recognised as ASHOT I “the Great” King of Armenia in 885. - see below. ii) ABAS . His brother appointed him sparapet in Armenia. He rebelled against his nephew Smbat after the death of his brother King Ashot I from his fortress at Kars. The Histoire of Jean VI Catholicos records that "le sbarabied Apas frère du roi Aschod" rebelled against "Sempad", son of the latter, but that peace was restored after King Smbat sent as hostages "son fils qui portait son nom et Aschod fils de son frère Schahpour" to Abas iii) daughter . The primary source which confirms her parentage and marriage has not yet been identified. m BAGRAT [I] Prince of Kartli, son of ASHOT I “the Great” Prince of Kartli & his wife --- (822-876). c) daughter . The Georgian Chronicle (18th century) records that the king of Armenia was the brother of the wife of "Gouaram, fils d'Achot et frère de Bagrat couropalates". m GUARAM of Iberia, son of ASHOT Prince of Iberia & his wife --- (-882). d) son . m ---. One child: i) GABLUTZ . His parentage is confirmed by the Georgian Chronicle (18th century) which records that "Gabloutz" made war against "Achot son cousin germain paternal, fils de Soumbat roi d'Arménie et frère de Gouaram". The Georgian Chronicle (18th century) records that "Gouaram, fils d'Achot et frère de Bagrat couropalates" captured "Gabloutz…parent de Sahac". 2. SAPUH . The primary source which confirms his parentage has not yet been identified. He was appointed sparapet in Armenia by the Caliph in 804.

- Father: Ashot IV Msaker BAGRATUNI of Armenia
- Birth: 790, Adrianople, Turkey
- Residence: (Date and Place unknown)
- Also known as: Smbat VIII Bagratuni
- Title Of Nobility: Sparapet (commander-in-chief) of Armenia
- LifeSketch: Smbat VIII Bagratuni or Smbat the Confessor (Armenian: Սմբատ Խոստովանող, romanized: Smbat Khostovanogh) was an Armenian noble of the Bagratid (Bagratuni) family and one of the most important princes (nakharar) of Armenia in the mid-9th century as the commander-in-chief (sparapet) of Armenia. Taken prisoner to Samarra, he was pressured to convert to Islam but refused and died there. He was the father of Ashot I of Armenia, founder of the Bagratid Kingdom of Armenia. Smbat was the younger son of Ashot IV Bagratuni, who by the time of his death in 826 had come to control a large part of Armenia, and was recognized by the Abbasid caliphs as presiding prince (ishkhan) of Armenia. After his death, Smbat and his older brother Bagrat divided their father's inheritance between them: Bagrat took the regions of Taron, Khoith and Sassoun, i.e. the family's domains on the Upper Euphrates, while Smbat received the ancestral lands around Bagaran and the Araxes river. In a calculated effort to keep the two brothers divided, the Abbasid government divided Ashot's authority and conferred on Smbat the title of commander-in-chief (sparapet) and ruler of Shirak, while Bagrat was named presiding prince four years after his father's death. Abbasid calculations proved correct, as the two brothers spent much time quarrelling with each other. In 841, for instance, Bagrat had the Armenian bishops depose the Catholicos of Armenia, John IV, but he was promptly re-installed in his see by Smbat with the assistance of the other princes. Nevertheless, the Armenian princes were able to use the Caliphate's preoccupation with the Khurramite rebellion of Babak Khorramdin to achieve a significant degree of autonomy during this period. Smbat, who had spent time at the caliphal court as a hostage, was more circumspect about openly challenging Arab power than his brother, but both were ultimately too weak to seriously threaten Abbasid predominance for the time being. When Khalid ibn Yazid al-Shaybani, who in his previous tenures had become enormously unpopular among both the Christian and the Arab princes of the country, was appointed as caliphal governor in 841, Smbat led the reaction against him. The rebels achieved his recall by the Caliph and his replacement with the weaker and more pliant Ali ibn Husayn, to whom the Armenians not only refused to hand over the expected taxes, but whom they promptly blockaded in his capital, Bardaa. When Caliph al-Wathiq (r. 842–847) reappointed Khalid as governor, Smbat was again at the forefront of a revolt against him, alongside the Muslim rebel Sawada ibn Abd al-Hamid al-Jahhafi and Sahak, Prince of Syunik. The rebels were heavily defeated at the Battle of Kawakert, however. Like all prominent nakharar, he was taken captive by Bugha al-Kabir when he invaded Armenia in 853–855. Many of the nakharar converted to Islam to save their lives, but Smbat did not. He is venerated as a confessor for the faith by the Armenian Church. Smbat's son Ashot V Bagratuni succeeded his father as sparapet. In 862 Ashot also became "prince of princes", leading eventually to his establishment of the virtually independent Bagratid Kingdom of Armenia in 884.

- Title Of Nobility: Marzpan of Armenia
- fled to the Byzantine Empire: and was exiled for several years to Africa for his participation in a plot against Heraclius
- LifeSketch: Varaztirots II Bagratuni (Armenian: Վարազ-Տիրոց Բ Բագրատունի; c. 590 – 645) was an Armenian nakharar from the Bagratuni family, the son of Smbat IV Bagratuni. He was marzpan of Armenia c. 628, fled to the Byzantine Empire soon thereafter and was exiled for several years to Africa for his participation in a plot against Heraclius. On his return c. 645/6, he was named curopalates and presiding prince of Armenia, but died before being formally invested. Varaztirots was the eldest son of Smbat IV Bagratuni. Along with his brother Garikhpet, he grew up in the Sassanid Persian court of Khosrau II (r. 591–628). Following the defeat of the rebellion of Vistahm, in which his father was instrumental, Varaztirots was named a royal cupbearer. At that point, or after Smbat's victory over the Hephthalites in 608, he also received the honorific name Javitean Khosrow ("Eternal Khosrau"). In 628, Khosrau II was overthrown after a conspiracy in which several aristocratic houses, including Varaztirots, took part. As a reward, the new Persian shah, Kavadh II, appointed Varaztirots as marzpan of Armenia, with the rank of aspet. He soon quarrelled with the Persian governor of neighbouring Azerbaijan, however, and fled with his family to the Byzantine emperor Heraclius, who, following the end of the Byzantine–Sasanian War of 602–628, resided with his court in northern Mesopotamia. According to the Armenian chronicler Sebeos, Heraclius welcomed him with great honours, gave him valuable gifts and "exalted him above all the patricians of his kingdom". In 635 or 637, however, Varaztirots became involved in a conspiracy by several Armenian magnates to overthrow and murder Heraclius and replace him with his son, John Athalarichos. The conspiracy was uncovered, and Varaztirots was exiled to Africa; the treatment he received was more merciful than that of his co-conspirators as he had opposed the murder of the emperor. On his death-bed in 641, Heraclius pardoned Varaztrots and made his successor, Constantine III, swear that he would recall him and his family from exile and restore their honours. In the event, Varaztirots was recalled only in 645/6, by Constans II at the urging of Theodore Rshtuni. Varaztirots quickly fled from Constantinople to Armenia, but after assurances of loyalty, Constans then appointed him governor of Armenia with the high rank of curopalates. Before he could be formally invested, however, he fell ill and died. He was buried next to his father at Dariwnk, in Kogovit.
