- LifeSketch: Bernhard II († August / September 874 ) was Count of Toulouse , Rouergue , Limoges , Nîmes , Carcassonne , Rasès and Albi . He was a son of Count Raimund I of Toulouse and Bertha. In 863 his father, who was loyal to Charles the Bald , was deposed by Humfried , Count of Barcelona . In 865 Humfried fled and Raimund I died, whereupon Bernhard got the counties Toulouse, Limoges, Rouergue, perhaps including Pallars and Ribagorza , from Karl . In 872, after Oliba II was deposed from Carcassonne , he received the counties of Albi, Nîmes, Carcassonne and Razès. In 874 he was murdered by a vassal Bernard “Plantevelue” Comte d’Auvergne, who then took over Toulouse and Limoges, while Oliba II returned to his old position. In Pallars and Ribagorza one of Raimund I managed to make himself de facto independent. ____________________________________________________ Bernard, Comte de Toulouse was the son of Raimond I, Comte de Toulouse.1 He died in 872.1 He succeeded as the Comte of Toulouse in 864.1

- LifeSketch: Foundation for Medieval Genealogy RAYMOND de Toulouse (-[923/24]). His parentage is confirmed by a charter dated 16 Jun 918, which records an audience at Ausonne in the diocesis of Carcassonnne held by "Aridemandus episcopus sedis Tolosæ civitatis...missus advocatus Raymundo comite Tolosæ civitatis et marchio" with the consent of "Odone comite genitore suo"[240]. The Vita Sancti Geraldi Aureliacensis Comitis records that "Raimundum…comitem filium…Odonis" captured "nepotem domni Geraldi…Benedictum, Tolosæ…vicecomitem" and that "Geraldus…cum sorore sua Avigerna" requested his release[241]. The Histoire Générale de Languedoc dates the event to [894/909], the earlier date being when the monastery of Aurillac was founded and the latter the date of death of Benoît´s maternal uncle[242]. If the estimated date is correct, this was before the death of Raymond´s father and therefore before his succession as comte de Toulouse. If at that date Raymond already held the comital title in his own right, it tends to corroborate the co-identity of Raymond II Comte de Toulouse with Raymond Comte d´Albi, as discussed below. He succeeded his father in [918] as RAYMOND II Comte de Toulouse. [same person as…? RAYMOND Comte d´Albi (-after 915). It is not certain whether the following documents all refer to the future Raymond II Comte de Toulouse: Comte de [Nîmes]. A bull of Pope John VIII dated 18 Aug 878, relating to papal authority over the monastery of Saint-Gilles, is subscribed by "Raimundus comes, Berengarius vicecomes…Emenus vicecomes, Oddo vicecomes, Ugo comes"[243]. A charter dated Aug 878 records an audience held by "Reymundo comite" at Albi[244]. A charter dated Apr 890 records a judgment in the court of "Raimundus…comes ipsius pagi…Allidulfo suo viciscomiti" relating to a claim by "Bligardis…in comitatu Nemausensi"[245]. A charter dated 23 May 898 records business in the presence of "Bernardo vices-comite…Regemundo comite…Berengario comite"[246]. "Regimundo comite" subscribed a charter dated Jul 902 recording a donation to Nîmes Notre-Dame[247]. A charter dated 18 Jul 915 records business in the presence of "Regemundo comite" and "Daruardus vicecomes Rotenensi" as judge in "Andusie…castello"[248]. It is possible that Raymond inherited Albi from his mother´s family. In later documentation, Albi and Nîmes are recorded under the same vicomtes, and it is also possible that they were linked under the same count in the late 9th century and that Nîmes was also inherited by Raymond. The fact that no further record is found relating to Raymond in Nîmes after 915 could be explained by his succession in Toulouse, after which Nîmes would have ceased to be one of his main centres of activity. No other Comte Raymond has so far been identified who could be this comte de Nîmes. "Ugo comes" who also subscribed the 878 papal bull has not yet been identified.] No document has been identified that Comte Raymond II also held the title Marquis de Gothie. The death of Guillaume I "le Pieux" Duke of Aquitaine, Marquis de Gothie, is dated to 918. The son of Comte Raymond II, Comte Raymond Pons, is recorded with the title in 924. As shown below, Ermengaud, supposed brother of Comte Raymond II is referred to as "princeps Gothiæ" by Flodoard in 932. It is suggested that Raymond II and his supposed brother received the title jointly in [918/19] from Charles III "le Simple" King of the West Franks. No close family connection has been traced between Comte Raymond II and Duke Guillaume I. It is therefore unlikely that the two supposed brothers succeeded to the title by inheritance. m --- (-[after 28 Sep 926]). The name and origin of the wife of Comte Raymond II are unknown. She may have been GUINIDILDA, daughter of ---, as suggested by the charter dated 28 Sep 926, under which "Teudericus et uxor mea…Sposia" donated property to Narbonne cathedral, signed by "Vulveradus vicecomes…Widinildis comitissa, Richildis vicecomitissa…"[249]. As Narbonne was under the suzerainty of the comtes de Toulouse, it is possible that "Widinildis comitissa" was the legal representative of the county at the time, widow of the former comte and acting in the capacity of guardian for her minor son. According to Europäische Stammtafeln[250], she was [Guinidilda] [de Barcelona, daughter of Guifré [I] "el Velloso/el Pilós/the Hairy" Conde de Barcelona & his wife Guinidilda ---]. As Guinidilda was also the name of the wife of Conde Guifré I, a connection seems likely, although it is also possible that "Vuidinildis comitissa" belonged to the same family as Guinidilda senior (about whose family nothing is known either). Comte Raymond II & his wife had one child: a) RAYMOND ([900/10]-[944/69], bur Saint-Pons-de-Thomières). His parentage is confirmed by the charter under which "Pontius…comes Tolosanus, primarchio et dux Aquitanorum et uxor mea Garsindis" donated property to the abbey of Saint-Pons de Thomières, for the souls of "genitore nostro Raimundo et genetrice mea"[251]. He succeeded his father in [923/24] as RAYMOND PONS Comte de Toulouse.

"Idelherus epicopus, Geresendes cometissa, Suniarius comes et marchio, Ermemirus vicescomes" signed a document dated 1 Dec 911 as executors of "Vuifredo comite condam filius fuit Vuifredo comite condam"[249]. The origin of Garsinde, wife of Guifre II Borel Conde de Barcelona, is unknown. Szabolcs de Vajay suggested, for onomastic reasons only, that she was the daughter of Odon Comte de Toulouse[250]. However, Garsinde/Gersende was such a common name at the time in southern France that this must be only one of numerous possibilities. A charter dated 18 Nov 908 records the sale of "villa de Palacio" to "domno Wifredo comite hac marchio que vocant Borrello et uxori tue Gersinda"[251]. "Garsindis comitissa" sold property to Vic by charter dated 17 Apr 926 which names "viro meo Vuifredo qui vocabulum fuit Borrello"[252]. A charter dated 13 May 962 refers to the testament of "condam Richildis vicecomitissa…de civitate Narbona" which appoints "suos elemosiniarios Gersindis comitissa…"[253], which, if it refers to Riquilda´s mother, indicates that she must have lived to extreme old age. m (898) GUIFRE [II] BOREL Conde de Barcelona, son of GUIFRE I "el Velloso/the Hairy" Conde de Barcelona & his wife Guinidilda (-911).] *************************** Our royal, titled, noble and commoner ancestors Gersende of Toulouse1 Last Edited 4 Apr 2020 F, #25381 Father Eudes (Odon), Count of Toulouse, Marquis of Gothie d. 919 Mother Garsinde de Albi Charts Some Descendants of Charlemagne Gersende of Toulouse married Wilfred II Borrel, Count of Barcelona, Gerona, & Osona, son of Winifred I, Count of Barcelona, Urgel and Widinille of Flanders, in 898. - Father: Marcus Ulpius TRAJANUS
- Mother: Traia spouse of Marcus Ulpius TRAJANUS
- Birth: 1 JUN 30, Italica, Seville, Andalucia, Spain
- LifeSketch: Marcus Ulpius Trajanus was born on 18 September at Italica near Seville, most likely in the year AD 52. His Spanish origin made him the first emperor not to come from Italy. Although he was from an old Umbrian family from Tuder in northern Italy which had chosen to settle in Spain. So his family was not a purely provincial one. His father, also called Marcus Ulpius Trajanus, was the first of the to reach the office of senator, commanded the Tenth Legion 'Fretensis' in the Jewish War of AD 67-68, and became consul in around AD 70. And in about AD 75, he became governor of Syria, one of the key military provinces in the empire. Later he also was to be governor of the provinces of Baetica and Asia. Trajan served in Syria as a military tribune during the governorship of his father. He enjoyed a thriving career, gaining the office of praetorship in AD 85. Soon after he won command of the Seventh Legion 'Gemina' based at Legio (Leon) in northern Spain. It was in AD 88/89 that he marched this legion into Upper Germany help in suppressing the rebellion of Saturninus against Domitian. Trajan's army arrived too late to play any part in crushing the revolt. Though Trajan's swift actions on the emperor's behalf won him the goodwill of Domitian and so he was elected as consul in AD 91. Such close ties to Domitian naturally became a source of some embarassment after the loathed Domitian's murder. Domitian's successor Nerva though was not a man to hold a grudge and in AD 96 Trajan was made governor of Upper Germany. Then, late in the year AD 97 Trajan received a handwritten note from Nerva, informing him of his adoption. If Trajan had any form of advance knowledge of his impending adoption is not known. His supporters in Rome may well been lobbying on his behalf. Trajan's adoption was naturally pure politics. Nerva required a powerful and popular heir in order to prop up his severly shaken imperial authority. Trajan was highly respected within the army and his adoption was the best possible remedy against the resentment much of the army felt against Nerva. But Trajan didn't come speeding back to Rome in order to help restore Nerva's authority. Rather than going to Rome he summoned the leaders of the earlier mutiny by the praetorians to Upper Germany. But instead of receiving a promised promotion, they were executed on arrival. Such ruthless actions made it quite clear that with Trajan as part of it, Rome's government was not to be messed with. Nerva died on 28 January AD 98. But Trajan once more felt no need for hasty, potentially undignified, action. Far more he went on a tour of inspection to see the legions long the Rhine and Danube frontiers. With Domitian's memory still held dear by the legions it was a wise move by Trajan to bolster his support among the soldiers with a personal visit to their frontier strongholds. Trajan's eventual entry at Rome in AD 99 was a triumph. Jubilant crowds rejoiced at his arrival. The new emperor entered the city on foot, he embraced each of the senators and even walked among the ordinary people. This was unlike any other Roman emperor and perhaps grants us a glimpse of Trajan's true greatness. Such modesty and openess easily helped the new emperor gain yet more support during the first years of his reign. Such humility and respect for the senate as well as for the simple people showed when Trajan promised that he would always keep the senate informed about the affairs of government and when he declared that the emperor's right to rule was to be compatible with the freedom of the people who were ruled. Trajan was an educated but not an especially learned man, who no doubt was a powerful, very masculine figure. He loved hunting, ranging through forests and even climbing mountains. Further he possessed a true sense of dignity and humility which in the eyes of the Romans made him an emperor of true virtue. Under Trajan the programme of public works was enlarged substantially. Thoughout Trajan's reign there was an ever-increasing programme of public works. The roads network in Italy was renovated, sections which passed through wetlands being paved or placed on embankments and many bridges were built. Also provisions for the poor were made, especially for children. Special imperial funds (alimenta) were created for their upkeep. (This system would still be in use 200 years later!) But with all his virtues, emperor Trajan was not perfect. He tended to overindulge on wine and had a liking for young boys. More still he seemed to truly enjoy war. Much of his passion for war came from the simple fact that he was very good at it. He was a brilliant general, as shown by his military achievements. Quite naturally he was very popular with the troops, especially due to his willingness to share in the hardships of his soldiers. Trajan's most famous campaign is undoubtedly that against Dacia, a powerful kingdom north of the Danube in modern Romania. Two wars were fought against it, resulting in its destruction and annexation as a Roman province in AD 106. The story of the Dacian Wars is illustrated in a the impressive relief carvings which spiral upwards around 'Trajan's Column', a monumental pillar standing Trajan's Forum in Rome. Much of the great treasure conquered in Dacia was used to build public works, including a new harbour at Ostia, and Trajan's Forum. But Trajan's passion for military life and warfare would grant him no rest. In AD 114 he was at war again. And he should spend the rest of his life campaigning in ths east against the Parthian empire. He annexed Armenia and spectacularly conquered the whole of Mesopatamia, including the Parthian capital Ctesiphon. But Trajan's star then began to fade. Revolts among the Jews in the middle east and the recently conquered Mesopotamians weakened his position to continue the war and military setbacks tarnished his air of invincibility. Trajan withdrew his troops to Syria and set out back to Rome. But he should not see his capital again. Already suffering from circulatory problems, which Trajan suspected were due to poison, he suffered a stroke which partially paralyzed him. The end came shortly after when he died in Selinus in Cilicia on 9 August AD 117. He body was taken to Seleucia where it was cremated. His ashes were then carried back to Rome and were placed in a golden urn into the base of 'Trajan's Colum'. Trajan's fame as the near perfect Roman ruler was remembered for time to come. His example was what later emperors at least aspired to live up to. And during the fourth century the senate still prayed for any new emperor to be 'More fortunate than Augustus and better than Trajan' ('felicior Augusto, melior Traiano'). http://www.roman-empire.net/highpoint/trajan.html

- Birth: 5, Trevan, Llanilid, Glamorganshire, Wales
- Fact: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caradog_ap_Bran
- Title Of Nobility: King Silmus
- LifeSketch: King of Siluria (now Monmouthshire, etc.), where he died. His valiant services to his country have been told in connection with the attempted invasions of the island. The Bards record his wise saying: "Oppression persisted in brings on death." notes or source: ancestry.com & HBJ King Caradoc's birth-book (pedigree register) records his own as well as others' descent from illustrious ancestors, through thirty-six generations from *Aedd Mawr.
- National Identification: The Silures fiercely resisted Roman conquest about AD 48, with the assistance of Caratacus, a military leader and prince of the Catuvellauni, who had fled from further east after his own tribe was defeated. The first attack on the Welsh tribes was by the legate Publius Ostorius Scapula about AD 48. Ostorius first attacked the Deceangli in the north-east of what is now Wales, who appear to have surrendered with little resistance. He spent several years campaigning against the Silures and the Ordovices. Their resistance was led by Caratacus, who had fled from the south-east (of what is now England) when it was conquered by the Romans. He first led the Silures, then moved to the territory of the Ordovices, where he was defeated by Ostorius in AD 51. The Silures were not subdued, however, and waged effective guerrilla warfare against the Roman forces. Ostorius had announced that they posed such a danger that they should be either exterminated or transplanted. His threats only increased the Silures' determination to resist. They surrounded and attacked a large legionary force occupied in building Roman forts in their territory; it was rescued by others only with difficulty and considerable loss. The Silures also took Roman prisoners as hostages and distributed them amongst their neighbouring tribes in order to bind them together and encourage resistance. Ostorius died with the Silures still unconquered. After his death, they defeated the Second Legion. It remains unclear whether the Silures were militarily defeated or simply agreed to come to terms, but Roman sources suggest rather opaquely that they were eventually subdued by Sextus Julius Frontinus in a series of campaigns ending about AD 78. The Roman Tacitus wrote of the Silures: non atrocitate, non clementia mutabatur – the tribe "was changed neither by cruelty nor by clemency". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silures

- LifeSketch: Guy I of Montlhéry From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Guy I (died 1095) was the second lord of Bray and the second lord of Montlhéry (Latin: Monte Leterico). He was probably the son of Thibaud of Montmorency, but some sources say that his father was named Milo. Thibaud may instead have been his grandfather. He married Hodierna of Gometz,[1] sister of William, lord of Gometz. They had seven children: • Milo I the Great,[1] (also called Milon I) lord of Montlhéry, married Lithuaise, Vicomtesse of Troyes • Melisende of Montlhéry (d. 1097), married Hugh I, Count of Rethel.[1] Mother of Baldwin II of Jerusalem.[1] • Elizabeth (Isabel) of Montlhéry, married Joscelin, lord of Courtenay. Mother of Joscelin I, Count of Edessa[1] • Guy II the Red (d. 1108),[1] lord of Rochefort • Beatrice of Rochefort (1069–1117), married Anseau of Garlande • Hodierna of Montlhéry, married Walter of Saint-Valery • Alice of Montlhéry (also called Adele or Alix) (1040–1097), married Hugh I, lord of Le Puiset (1035–1094).[1] Their son was Hugh I of Jaffa and daughter was Humberge of Le Puiset who travelled on the First Crusade with her husband Walo II of Chaumont-en-Vexin. Humberge's cousin (name unknown) was married to Ralph the Red of Pont-Echanfrey who also travelled with her husband on crusade. Guy died in 1095, the same year Pope Urban II launched the First Crusade. Many of his descendants had illustrious careers in the Holy Land, through the Montlhéry, Courtenay, and Le Puiset branches of his family.[2] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy_I_of_Montlh%C3%A9ry http://racineshistoire.free.fr/LGN/PDF/Montlhery.pdf
