- Also known as: Bran Hen of Bernaccia
- Title Of Nobility: King of Northumberland and Allobroges
- LifeSketch: Brennius was a legendary king of Northumberland and Allobroges, as recounted by Geoffrey of Monmouth. He was the son of Dunvallo Molmutius and brother of Belinus, probably based upon one or both of the historical Brenni. In an effort to win the crown of Britain, Brennius and Balinus waged war between each other to determine who should succeed their father. Many battles were fought between the two brothers until a time came when their friends intervened and a compromise was decided upon. Belinus became the King of the Britons with Brennius as King of Northumberland. Five years later, Brennius wed the daughter of the King of Norway without consulting Belinus. Belinus invaded Northumberland and seized Brennius's land. Brennius heard of this violation and gathered a large Norwegian army together to sail for Britain. On the way, a fleet of ships under the King of Denmark attacked because the king wanted Brennius's wife for himself. They fought in the open ocean and the two sides dispersed. The King of Denmark managed to capture the wife of Brennius but he then got lost and landed on Britain. Belinus captured the king and his brother's wife. Brennius landed in Albany and demanded the return of all his lands and his wife. If not, he swore he would kill Belinus if they ever met in battle. Belinus called to arms all of Britain against Brennius and the two armies met in the forests of Calaterium. The battle was fought ruthlessly and Belinus defeated the army of Brennius. Brennius fled to Gaul and Belinus became king over all the Britons. Duke of the Allobroges While in Gaul, Brennius travelled from king to king explaining his situation. All denied him help or protection until the Duke of the Allobroges, Segnius, befriended him. He became highly influential in the duke's ranks and was given the duke's daughter in marriage. The duke and all his men pledged to Brennius that if the duke produced no male heirs, Brennius would succeed him as leader of the Allobroges. The duke died within the year and Brennius became duke. He divided the treasures of the duke among the people and kept an open court to them all. Soon after becoming duke, Brennius gathered together another army and made right of passage treaties with all the Gauls. Eventually, he invaded Britain with his army and met Belinus on the battlefield. Their mother, however, convinced Brennius to make peace, and the two brothers ruled their two realms in harmony with each other. Conqueror of Rome Following their unification, Belinus and Brennius merged their armies into one great one and invaded Gaul. After a year of warfare, the joint army managed to subject all the Frankish kingdoms in Gaul to their authority. Now with an even greater army, Belinus lead his great army to Italy and threatened to invade Rome. Outside Rome, the two consuls, Gabias and Porsenna, sued for peace and offered wealth, tribute, and hostages as a sign of their submission. Belinus and Brennius accepted and took their great army to Germany. Soon after this movement north, Rome broke the treaty and marched north, and Brennius went to fight the Romans while Belinus remained at war with the Germans (who were being helped by various other Italian troops). Brennius traveled south and besieged Rome for three days until his brother came to his aid in the invasion. The Romans defended the city for many days and were successful in repelling the invaders. Finally, the two consuls put on armour and joined the men defending the city. They pushed the invaders back but Belinus was able to reform the lines and stop the attacks. Brennius and Belinus continued forward until the walls were breached and the Britons and Gauls invaded the city. Brennius stayed in Rome and ruled ruthlessly for the rest of his days. Comments on historicity Rome was indeed captured by Brennus, a Gaulish chieftain, following the Battle of the Allia on 18 July 390 BC. Gabias and Porsenna are not mentioned in any Roman sources. The later is a namesake of Lars Porsena, a King of the Etruscan civilization who is believed to have fought against the recently founded Roman Republic in the decade of the 500s BC.

Her birth date is estimated from her mother's estimated birth date and the fact that Adelaide herself gave birth to her youngest child in [1060]. Hilduin [IV] & his wife had nine children: 1. EBLES [II] de Ramerupt (-May 1103). The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines names "Beatrix" as second daughter of Ebles Comte de Roucy and incorrectly names her husband "Rotroldo comiti de Pertico"[1076]. The Genealogiæ Scriptoris Fusniacensis names "comitis Hilduini de Rameruth maior natu filia dicta Beatrix" as wife, also incorrectly, of "Rotaldo comiti de Pertica"[1077]. She is named as wife of Geoffroy Comte du Perche by Orderic Vitalis, incorrectly saying that she was daughter of "the count of Rochefort"[1078] and specifying in another passage that her son Rotrou was consanguineus of Alfonso I King of Aragon[1079]. m GEOFFROY de Châteaudun, son of ROTROU Vicomte de Châteaudun, Comte de Mortagne & his wife Adelise de Bellême (-mid-Oct 1100, bur Nogent-le-Rotrou[1080]). The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines names "Adele" as seventh daughter of Ebles Comte de Roucy and names her husband "Arnulfo comiti de Chisneio"[1088], although the chronology favours Adela being the sister rather than daughter of Ebles. The Genealogiæ Scriptoris Fusniacensis clarifies the question when it refers to, but does not name, "quintam…Hilduini comitis filiam" as wife of "Arnulfus comes de Cinni"[1089]. “Arnulphus comes cum coniuge mea Adelais, filius Ludovici comitis” founded a monastery “in villa Pyrorum…in honore S. Sulpitii”, subject to “ecclesiæ S. Petri et S. Hugberti in Ardenna”, by undated charter signed by “Arnulphi comitis et Manasse fratris eius”[1090]. "Arnulfus comes cum coniuge mea Adelais filius Ludoguici comitis" donated revenue from the church of Prix to Ardenne Saint-Hubert by charter dated to 1066, signed by "Arnulfi comitis et Manasse fratris eius…"[1091]. "Arnulfus comes cum coniuge mea Adelail, filius Ludoguici comitis" founded the priory of Priez by charter dated 1068, signed by "Arnulphi comitis et Manasse fratris eius…"[1092]. The Chronicle of Saint-Hubert records the burial of "Adeladis uxor Arnulphi, soror…Ebali Roceiensis" at Saint-Hubert, dated to [1068/69] from the context[1093]. m as his first wife, ARNOUL II Comte de Chiny, son of LOUIS [II] Comte de Chiny & his wife Sophie --- (-16 Apr 1106). 8. AELIS de Ramerupt . The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines names "Aeliz de Sarrata in Burgundia" as fifth daughter of Ebles Comte de Roucy[1094]. The Genealogiæ Scriptoris Fusniacensis names "sexta filia Hilduini comitis Adelidis" as mother of "filium columbine simplicitatis nomine Bartholomeum…[et] Ebalum"[1095]. m CONON "Falcon" de La Sarraz [Grandson], son of ADALBERT & his wife --- (-before 1114). 9. FELICIE de Ramerupt ([1060]-3 May 1123[1096], bur Monastery of San Juan de la Peña). The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines refers to the first of the seven daughters of Count Ebles as, inaccurately, wife of "regi Galicie Sanctio" but does not name her[1097]. The Genealogiæ Scriptoris Fusniacensis is somewhat more accurate in referring to, but still not naming, "septima filia…Hilduini" as wife of "Sanctio regi Hispanie" by whom she had "Hildefonsum regem et fratrem eius, qui ei successit in regnum. Cuius filiam cum regni gubernaculis comes inclitus Barcinonensis, qui paganos impugnare non desinit, duxit uxorem"[1098]. The Crónica de San Juan de la Peña records that King Sancho married "muller Doña Felicia"[1099]. The Monumenta Historiæ Tornacensis names "Feliciæ materteræ vestræ filium" as wife of "in Hispaniam regem Hildefonsum"[1100]. - Father: George A MOODY Sr
- Mother: Margaret Newce CHENERY
- Birth: 11 OCT 1584, Moulton, Suffolk, England
- Christening: 11 OCT 1584, Moulton, Suffolk, England
- Emigration: APR 1635, London, England
- Burial location: They were buried on their farm and relocated by 1700 after a burying ground had been established in Wethersfield.
- LifeSketch: Birthdates given for Thomas and Frances are the dates of their christenings. They were buried on their farm and relocated by 1700, after a burying ground had been established in Wethersfield. ∼ Thomas Kilbourn married in Moulton, Suffolk, 5 September 1604 Frances Moody, daughter of George Moody. They had nine children: Anne, Margaret Law, Thomas, George, Elizabeth Gunnison, Lydia Howard, Mary Root, Frances Ufford, & John. JOHN MOODY {1633, Roxbury} was a brother of Francis (Moody) Kilburne. Their sister Elizabeth Moody married John Pratt of Wood Ditton, but he was not the immigrant of that name to Cambridge and Hartford. According to her age on the passenger list, Mary Kilbourn was born about 1619. William Ridgwell, vicar of Wood Ditton, was buried there on 2 May 1618, and no further parish register entries were made until 29 July 1620, thus explaining the lack of a baptismal record for Mary. (Although there are some discrepancies between the baptismal records at Wood Ditton and the ages given on the passenger list, there is no doubt of the identification, and the discrepancies have no material impact on the analysis of this family's chronology.) Source: Anderson's great migration study Project. According to FAG contributor Bill Velde, They were buried on their farm and relocated by 1700, after a burying ground had been established in Wethersfield. "The Great Migration, 1634-1635," by Robert Charles Anderson: THOMAS KILBOURN ORIGIN: Wood Ditton, Cambridgeshire. FIRST RESIDENCE: Wethersfield... ESTATE: ...In her will, dated 13 November 1650 and proved 1 June 1651, "Francis Killburne of Wethersfield, ... in lieu of forty shillings she borrowed of Richard Law ... have given him five pounds to be paid within a year or two" and bequeathed to "my daughter Margerit, the wife of Richard Lawe, my old cloth gown, and to my grandchild Jonathan Lawe five shillings"; to "my daughter Lydia, the wife of Robert Haward, five pounds as the full of her portion I promised upon marriage with my daughter"; to "my daughter Meary, the wife of John Roote, five pounds as the full of her portion I promised upon marriage with my daughter"; to "my daughter Francis, the wife of Thomas Ufford, ten pounds in full of her portion promised in marriage with my daughter"; to "my grandchild Elizabeth Geneson," clothing; to "my three daughters to be divided amongst them, Lydia, Mary & Francis," clothing and linen; to "my son John," three shirts, and he to be sole executor [Hartford Court Records 2:15 (probate side); Manwaring 1:133]. The inventory of the estate of Frances Kilborne, taken 3 December 1650... [Hartford Court Records 2:16 (probate side)]. On 5 December 1650, "there was exhibited into the court the will and inventory of the widow Killburne. The court not being satisfied about the proof of the will, ordered that John Killburne should for the present administer till they shall take further order about the same" [Hartford Court Records 2:16 (court side)]. On 1 June 1651, the "court approves of the last will and testament of the widow Killburne deceased and doth confirm John [Killburne administrator]" [Hartford Court Records 2:25 (court side)]. BIRTH: Baptized Wood Ditton, Cambridgeshire, 8 May 1578, son of John Kilborne. DEATH: By 3 September 1640 [CCCR 1:445]. MARRIAGE: Moulton, Suffolk, 5 September 1604 Frances Moody, daughter of George Moody [NEHGR 80:3 19, 323-24]. CHILDREN: i. ANNE KILBOURN, b. say 1605; named in the 5 August 1607 will of her grandfather, George Moody [NEHGR 80:316-17, citing PCC 87 Hudleston]; no further record. (In accord with the custom of the time, she may have been baptized in Moulton, the home parish of her mother.) ii. MARGARET KILBOURN, bp. Wood Ditton 23 September 1607; m. by about 1636 Richard Law (eldest known child d. "9 January 1711/2 in the 75th or 76th year of his age" [MilfordVR Barbour 112]). iii. THOMAS KILBOURN, bp. Wood Ditton 30 November 1609; possibly the "Thomas Kilborne," aged 24, and "Elizabeth his wife," aged 20, who were enrolled at Ipswich on 30 April 1634 as passengers for New England on the Elizabeth [Hotten 280]; otherwise no further record. iv. GEORGE KILBOURN, bp. Wood Ditton 12 February 1611/2; no further record. (He was not the George Kilbourn who had settled at Roxbury and Rowley [Hale, House 653; Sarah Stone Anc 95].) v. MARY KILBOURN, b. about 1619 (aged 16 on 15 April 1635 [Hotten 66]; on 14 April 1669 and 14 July 1669, John Winthrop Jr. treated "Root Mary 50 years wife of John of Farmington [WMJ 900, 937]); m. by about 1639 John Root (eldest known child, son John, m. on 18 October 1664 [Savage 3:572]). viii. FRANCES KILBOURN, bp. Wood Ditton 9 September 1621; m. by 1650 Thomas Ufford, son of Thomas UFFORD {1632, Roxbury}. [GMB 3:1857-58]. ix. JOHN KILBOURN, bp. Wood Ditton 29 September 1624; m. (1) by 1651 Naomi ___ (eldest known child b. 15 January 1651 [/2] [WetVR Barbour 190, citing LR1:18]; "Naomey," w. John Kilburne, d. Wethersfield 1 October 1659 [WetVR Barbour 190, citing LR1:39]); m. (2) about 1662 Sarah Brunson, daughter of John Brunson [TAG 38:199-204]. ASSOCIATIONS: JOHN MOODY {1633, Roxbury} [GMB 2:1273-76] was a brother of Frances (Moody) Kilburne [NEHGR 80:313-27]. Their sister Elizabeth Moody married John Pratt of Wood Ditton [NEHGR 80:324], but he was not the immigrant of that name to Cambridge and Hartford [TAG 64:11; GMB 3:1507-10]. COMMENTS: According to her age on the passenger list, Mary Kilbourn was born about 1619. William Ridgwell, vicar of Wood Ditton, was buried there on 2 May 1618, and no further parish register entries were made until 29 July 1620, thus explaining the lack of a baptismal record for Mary. (Although there are some discrepancies between the baptismal records at Wood Ditton and the ages given on the passenger list, there is no doubt of the identification, and the discrepancies have no material impact on the analysis of this family's chronology.)... Mary Walton Ferris cogently argued that the "grandchild Elizabeth Geneson" named in the will of Frances (Moody) Kilbourn was daughter of her daughter Elizabeth, who had married soon after arrival in New England Robert Jennison of Watertown [Dawes-Gates 1:369-71]. BIBLIOGRAPHIC NOTE: In 1845 Payne Kenyon Kilboume published an account of this family ["The Family Memorial. A History and Genealogy of the Kilbourn Family, in the United States and Canada from the Year 1635 to the Present Time" (Hartford 1845)] and in 1856 he brought out a much-expanded version ["The History and Antiquities of the Name and Family of Kibourn, (in Its Varied Orthography.)" (New Haven 1856)]. In 1931 Mary Walton Ferris treated the family [Dawes-Gates 2:508-14]. In 1952 Donald Lines Jacobus treated the family of this immigrant, including much detail on the family of his wife [Hale, House 652-56]. In 1960 Jacobus prepared another brief account of the family [Ackley -Bosworth 16-18]."

GEORGE, of Moulton, yeoman, bapt. 19 Feb. 1586/7; d.s.p.; bur. at Moulton, as "Mr. George Moodye," 23 Feb. 1651/2; m. at Ashfield Magna, co Suffolk, 25 May 1608, as "George Moodie of Moulton, gent.," LYDIA HOVELL, daughter of Robert Hovell alias Smith, who, as "Mrs. Moodye, wife of Mr. George Moodye," was buried at Moulton 23 June 1660. This George Moody received under the will of his father the mansion house called Fryettes, in Moulton, with much land. In the Civil War he was a Parliamentarian, and was one of the sequestrators of the living of Moulton when the minister, John Browne, apparently his aunt's husband, was suspended for not praying for a blessing on Parliament (vide supra, p. 323). The family of Hovell alias Smith, to which his wife belonged, was a well-known Suffolk family, of which the elder members were usually styled "gentlemen," while the younger sons became clothiers, physicians, apothecaries, and clergymen. (For an account of this family see Muskett's Suffolk Manorial Families, vol. 2, pp. 1 et seq.) In his will, dated 20 Feb. 1651 [1651/2], he left Fryettes to his wife Lydia and made bequests to his sister, Margaret Warren, and her children and to other relatives and connections, including his brother Samuel Moody. An abstract of the will, which contains much genealogical information, is given in the REGISTER, vol. 39, p. 68."

- LifeSketch: "The Great Migration Begins," by Robert Charles Anderson: "JOHN MOODY ORIGIN: Moulton, Suffolk MIGRATION: 1633 FIRST RESIDENCE: Roxbury REMOVES: Hartford by 1639 CHURCH MEMBERSHIP: Admitted to Roxbury church as member #69: "He came to the land in the year 1633. He had no children. He had two men servants, that were ungodly, especially one of them; who in his passion would wish himself in hell; & use desperate words, yet had a good measure of knowledge. These 2 servants would go to the oyster bank in a boat, & did, against the counsel of their governor, where they lay all night; & in the morning early when the tide was out they gathering oysters, did unskillfully leave their boat afloat, in the verges of the channel, & quickly the tide carried it away so far into the channel that they could not come near it, which made them cry out & hallow, but being very early & remote were not heard, till the water had risen very high upon them to the arm-holes as it's thought, & then a man from Rockbrough meeting house hill heard them cry & call, & he cried & ran with all speed, & seeing their boat swam to it, & hastened to them, but they were both so drowned before any help could possibly come, a dreadful example of God's displeasure against obstinate servants [RChR 78]." (Winthrop tells this same story, with minor differences in detail, but with the same moralistic judgment, and dates the event as 6 August 1633 [WJ 1:126]; one of these servants was Thomas DESBRE, administration of whose estate was granted to John Moody on 3 September 1633 [MBCR 1:108].) FREEMAN: 5 November 1633 (as "Mr. John Moody") [MBCR 1:368]. EDUCATION: The inventory included a parcel of books valued at £2 10s. OFFICES: Deputy to General Court for Roxbury, 2 September 1635 [MBCR 1:156]. Lieutenant, Hartford train band, April 1640 [CT Civil List 37]. ESTATE: In the Hartford land inventory of February 1639[/40] "John Moodie" held six parcels which were granted to him; he also had two parcels by purchase, which were later exchanged for other parcels: four acres with dwelling house, outhouses, yards and gardens; twenty-six acres of upland; six acres in the South Meadow; four acres in the South Meadow "which was sequestered for Abram Pratt & is now settled on John Moody by the inhabitants of the town"; two roods in the Neck of Land "which was sequestered for Abram Pratt & now settled on John Moody by the inhabitants of the town"; four acres in Hockanum; fourteen acres in a great swamp, purchased of Nathaniel Cole; another parcel "in the same tier of lots," purchased of Nathaniel Cole; these last two parcels exchanged with John Grave for thirteen acres in the great swamp [HaBOP 210-12]. The will of John Moody was dated 23 July 1655 and proved in December 1655: "The last will & testament of John Moody late of Hartford: I do make my loving wife Sarah Moody sole executrix, and I do will that half of all that I have, both land and stuff (excepting the household stuff, which I leave wholly to my wife), I give to my son Samuel Moody for to have it at the age of twenty-four years. I will also that Elizabeth Pepper shall. have five & twenty pound paid her within a year, and a petticoat and a waistcoat & a pair of shoes; and this and all my debts for to be paid out of the whole" [Hartford PD Case #3758; Manwaring 1:138; RPCC 156]. The inventory of the estate of John Moody, taken 6 December 1655, totalled £300 14s. 6d., of which £110 was real estate: "11 acres of meadow," £40; "two parcels of upland," £10; and "the homelot with all the housing thereupon," £60 [Hartford PD Case #3758; Manwaring 1:138]. BIRTH: Baptized Moulton, Suffolk, 8 April 1593, son of George and Margaret (Chenery) Moody of Moulton [NEHGR 80:326-27; TAG 64:1-11]. DEATH: Hartford between 25 July 1655 (date of will) and 6 December 1655 (date of inventory). MARRIAGE: Bury St. Edmunds St. James, Suffolk, 8 September 1617 Sarah Cox. She was baptized at Bury St. Edmunds St. James on 17 May 1598 [NEHGR 80:326]. "Sarah Moody, the wife of John Moody," was admitted to Roxbury church as member #70, immediately after her husband [RChR 78]. She died at Hadley 4 November 1671 [HadVR 80]. CHILDREN (dates for i-vi from NEHGR 80:327): i. (poss.) JOHN, bp. Bury St. Edmunds St. James, 3 December 1617; no further record. ii. JOHN, bp. Bury St. Edmunds St. James 1 January 1618/9; bur. there 5 January 1618/9. iii. JOHN, bp. Bury St. Edmunds St. James 3 March 1621/2; bur. there 5 March 1621/2. iv. HANNAH, bp. Bury St. Edmunds St. James 11 November 1624; bur. there the same day. v. Samuel, bp. Bury St. Edmunds St. James 16 July 1631; bur. there 19 July 1631. vi. JOHN, bp. Moulton, Suffolk, October 1632; no further record. vii. Samuel, b. say 1634; m. say 1659 Sarah ___ (based on estimated ages of children) ASSOCIATIONS: Frances Moody, sister of John Moody, married Thomas Kilbourn, and this couple came to New England in 1635, settling in Wethersfield [Hale, House 652-56]. A third sibling, Elizabeth Moody, married John Pratt of Wood Ditton, Cambridgeshire, but this was not the JOHN PRATT of Cambridge and Hartford in New England [TAG 64:11]. COMMENTS: John Moody was involved in civil actions before the Connecticut Particular Court on 1 August 1639, 5 September 1639, 29 October 1646 and 3 March 1652/3 [RPCC 4, 5, 44, 45, 115; CCCR 1:29, 33]. On 27 January 1642/3 he swore to the will of Richard Lyman [CCCR 1:81]. Savage read Elizabeth Pepper of the will as Elizabeth "Seger." She must have been Elizabeth (Johnson) Pepper, wife of Robert. BIBLIOGRAPHIC NOTE: In 1926 Miss Lilian J. Redstone of London, England, communicated a thorough study of the English Moody ancestry of John Moody to the Register [NEHGR 80:313-27]. Frederick J. Nicholson identified the mother of John Moody and in 1989 and 1991 published information on her ancestry [TAG 64:1-1 1, 66:197-204]."

- Father: Edward MOODYE
- Birth: 1495, Bury St Edmunds St James, Suffolk, England
- Christening: Moulton, Suffolk, England
- Date of Will: Moulton, Suffolk, England
- Burial Location: This is based on the history of parliament but that entry is not this Edmund Moodye.: St. Mary’s ‘in a chancel where the aldermen do sit’
- How Edmund got his legacy & George Washington's ancestors bought Edmund's land: Edmund was just a lowly knave in Henry 8th court. While out running along the sides of the horses of the titled men, Henry in full armour was crossing a creek and the horse slipped, thus dumping the King into the water. He could not get up without help, being a tad heavy in weight and with armour. Edmund ran over and held the King's head above the water until everyone could dismount and help right the King. For this bravery, he was awarded the title SIR EDMUND, given a manor at BURY ST EDMUND (a town), and a pension. Several generations later the Manor was "sold to George Washington's ancestors". A heraldity shield to Edmund was also given. (found on - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Sadlier-8 )
- LifeSketch: Saved the life of King Henry VIII While hunting with his hawk Edmund Moody (Moodye) was a footman to King Henry, VIII. In 1525 King Henry was 35 and becoming stout. He was a falconer and, while pursuing that sport, his vaulting pole broke as he leaped across a muddy brook, pitching the king head-first into the deep mud. He would have drowned had not his footman, Edmund Moody, jumped in and pulled out the king's head which was firmly stuck in the muck. As a reward, Edmund was made a gentleman and granted a pension of a grote a day and some land in Moulton. Later he was given "The Reward of Valor" together with an Arms and Crest from the College of Arms dated 6 October 1541, after which he retired to his home i Bury St. Edmunds. He died there in September of 1562. Note: This Edmund Moodye is not the same as the Edmund Moodye, Member of Parliament Edmund Moody of Bury St. Edmunds, county Suffolk, England, born probably about 1495, is the earliest person of the name from whom a descent has been proved in this particular family. All that is known of him is that he was a footman in the retinue of King Henry VIII, saved the latter from drowning, and was rewarded for this exploit by a grant of land, a pension and a coat-of-arms, as shown by the following record in Office of the College of Arms, London: "The Arms & Crest of Edmund Moody of Bury St. Edmunds in the County of Suffolk, Gentlemen, granted to him by Thomas Hawley, Clarenceux King-at-Arms 6 October 1540, in the 32 year of King Henry the Eighth, for his miraculously saving his life (at Hitchin, co. Herts), when leaping over a ditch with a pole which brake; that if the said Edmund had not leapt into ye water and lifted up the King’s head, he had drowned; for which he was rewarded. After which he left the Court and lived at St. Edmunds Bury, as stated by Letters Patent in the Office. Also the deliverance is mentioned in the book called "Prince Protecting Providence”, set out in the year 1682, page 4" PLM: So, then he is not entitled to use the word Sir? He was also granted a Groat a day for life; so is this the equivalant of a penny? No, he wasn't a sir. A groat was a fourpenny-piece (worth four old pence!). There were 3 groats to a shilling (now 5p or £0.05) and there were 20 shillings in one pound. I'll let you work out the dollar/annual conversion.
