- EXILED FROM ENGLAND: Ælfgar was exiled by King Edward in 1055 but was reinstated later the same year.
- ALLIED WITH GRUFFYDD AP LLYWELLYN OF WALES: After being banished, Ælfgar allied with Gruffydd ap Llywellyn King of Gwynedd and Powys. Together they invaded England sacking Hereford.
- REINSTATED AS EARL: In 1056 Ælfgar and Prince Gruffydd made peace with King Edward and Ælfgar was once again reinstated as Earl of East Anglia.
- Title Of Nobility: Earl of Mercia; Earl of East Anglia
- LifeSketch: Ælfgar (died c. 1060) was the son of Leofric, Earl of Mercia, by his famous mother Godgifu (Lady Godiva). He succeeded to his father's title and responsibilities on the latter's death in 1057. He gained the additional title of Earl of East Anglia, but also was exiled for a time. Ælfgar married Ælfgifu, sister of William Malet, Lord of Eye. They had 4 children: - Burgheard, died returning from Rome 1060, buried at Reims - Edwin, Earl of Mercia - Morcar, Earl of Northumbria - Ealdgyth, married (1st) Gruffydd ap Llywelyn, King of Wales (2nd) Harold Godwinson, King of England. -------------------------------------------------------------- from www.geni.com Ælfgar Also Known As: "Algar III Earl of Mercia", "Aelfgar", "Alfagar of Mercia" Birthdate: circa 1002 (57) Birthplace: Mercia, England Death: between 1059 and 1063 (53-65) Mercia, England Place of Burial: Coventry, Warwickshire, England Immediate Family: Son of Leofric III, earl of Mercia and Lady Godiva Husband of Ælfgifu Father of Ealdgyth; Eadwyne, Duke of Mercia; Morcar, Earl of Northumbria and Burgheard Occupation: Earl of East Anglia and Mercia, Earl of Mercia, King of Mercia Aelfgar, Earl (d 1062), was the son of Leofric of Mercia and his wife Godgifu, the 'Lady Godiva' of legend. Bitter jealousy existed between the ancient Mercian house and the new and successful family of Godwine. When, in 1051, Godwine and his sons gathered their forces against the king and his foreign favourites, Aelfgar and Leofric were among the party which stood by Eadward at Gloucester, and on the outlawry of Harold his earldom of East Anglia was given to Aelfgar. The new earl ruled well, and the next year, on the restoration of Godwine's house, cheerfully surrendered the government to Harold. On the death of Godwine in 1053, the West Saxon earldom was given to Harold, and East Anglia was again committed to Aelfgar. In 1055, at the Witenagemont held in London, Aelfgar was accused of treason, and was outlawed 'for little or no fault at all,' according to all the Chronicle writers, save one. The Canterbury writer, however, who was a strong partisan of Harold, says that Aelfgar owned his guilt, though he did so unawares. He fled to Ireland and engaged eighteen ships of the Northmen. He crossed to Wales and made alliance with Gruffydd of North Wales. With Gruffydd and a large host of Welshmen, Aelfgar and his Norse mercenaries invaded Herefordshire. Ralph, the king's nephew, the earl of the shire, met the invaders with an army composed both of Frenchmen and English. He foolishly compelled his English force to go to battle on horseback, contrary to their custom. He and his Frenchmen fled first, and the battle was lost. Aelfgar and his allies entered Hereford. They sacked and burnt the minster and the city, slaying some and taking many captive. To check this invasion the whole force of the kingdom was gathered under Earl Harold and Aelfgar and his allies were chased into South Wales. In 1055 Aelfgar made peace with Harold, was reconciled to the king and restored to his earldom. On the death of Leofric, in 1057, Aelfgar received his father's earldom of Mercia. The position of his new earldom as regards Wales and Ireland encouraged his restlessness, and the weakness and instability of King Eadward the Confessor made rebellion no serious matter. It was probably while the only force capable of maintaining order in the kingdom was removed by the pilgrimage of Harold, that Aelfgar was, in 1058, outlawed for the second time. His old allies were ready to help him. Gruffydd and a fleet of the Northmen, which seems to have been cruising about on the look-out for employment, enabled him to set his outlawry at defiance and to retain his earldom with the strong hand. IN one good deed Aelfgar and Harold acted together. On the surrender of the see of Worcester by Archbishop Aldred in 1062, both the earls joined in recommending Wulfstan for the bishopric. Soon afterwards, probably in the same year, Aelfgar died. His wife's name was Aelfigifu. He left two sons, Eadwine and Morkere, who played a conspicuous part in English history. A charter of the abbey of ST Remigius at Rheims records that Aelfgar gave Lapley to that house for the good of the soul of a son of his named Burchard, who was buried there. His daughter, Aldgyth, married her father's ally Gruffydd, and, after the deaths of Aelfgar and Gruffydd, married as her second husband Harold, her father's old enemy. [Dictionary of National Biography I:148-149] Aelfgar, of age 1051, d. shortly after 1062, Earl of East Anglia 1053, Earl of Mercia 1057, banished 1058; m. Aelfgifu, by whom 3 known sons: Eadwine, Morkere, and Burchard, whose issue are unknown, and a daughter Aldgyth [as well as Edith or Aldgyth]. [Ancestral Roots, Line 176a-3] ______________________________ Earl of East Anglia 1053; Earl of Mercia 1057. From Gen-Med Archives, June 19, 1999; author: Leo van de Pas: "In 1055, he was forced to seek the protection of Gruffyd in Wales, in that year Gruffyd and Alfgar burned down St.Aethelbert's minster and all the town of Hereford. In 1058 Alfgar, without having given reason, was outlawed, and went to Ireland and Wales where he got himself a great band and then travelled to Hereford. After a violent battle Alfgar was reinstated and given back all that had earlier been taken from him."

- LifeSketch: Ælfstan was one of the five sons of Æthelfrith, Ealdorman of Wrington. It is possible that his mother was named Æthelgyth. Ælfstan's brothers were: Æthelstan, Æthelwold, Eadric, and another brother whose name is not known. His father Æthelfrith is believed to be the grandson of King Æthelred who reigned in first Kent and then Wessex from 855 to 871, therefore, although not an aethling, Ælfstan was of the royal House of Wessex. He was great-grandson of King Æthelred and a kinsman of King Alfred the Great. Little is known of Ælfstan. He signed charters for King Edward and King Æthelstan dated from 901 to 934 and therefore died sometime in 934 or after. Ealdorman Æthelwold identified him as his brother when he bequeathed property to Ælfstan's son. From this we know he married and had at least one son. Unfortunately the name of his wife and the name of his son are not known. -------------------------------------------- FOUNDATION FOR MEDIEVAL GENEALOGY 1. ÆTHELFRITH (-904 or after). According to Anscombe[688], Æthelfrith was the son of Æthelhelm, supposed son of Æthelred I King of England. However, this is unlikely from a chronological point of view. Any grandsons of King Æthelred could not have been born before [890] at the earliest, while Ealdorman Æthelfrith was active in 901, even in 884 if the subscriptions of charters of that date refer to the same person. "Æthelferth ealdorman/dux/comes" and "Æthelfrith dux" subscribed two charters of Æthelred Ealdorman of Mercia in 884 and four charters of King Edward dated between 901 and 904[689]. "Æthelfrith dux" was also granted land at Wrington, Somerset by King Edward under a charter dated 903[690]. m ÆTHELGYTH, daughter of ÆTHELWULF & his wife ---. King Edward renewed the charter of a grant by Athulf to Æthelgyth his daughter of land at Monks Risborough, Buckinghamshire, by charter dated 903[691]. As "Æthelgyth 1" she is shown in PASE as the mother of Æthelstan Half-King but the source on which this relationship is based is not specified. Æthelfrith & his wife had five children: a) ÆTHELSTAN (-956 or after). "Æthelfritho, eius filius Ethelstanus dux" gave Wrington, given to his father by King Edward, to Glastonbury[692]. - EALDORMEN of EAST ANGLIA. b) ÆTHELWOLD (-after [946/47]). Ealdorman Æthelwold under his will dated [946/47] bequeathed land at Æscesdune, Berkshire, Cheam, Surrey and Washington, Sussex to his brother Eadric, land at Broadwater, Sussex and South Newton, Wiltshire to his brother Æthelstan, land at Carcel to his brother's son Ælfsige, and land at Cleran to the son of his brother Ælfstan[693]. c) ÆLFSTAN (-934 or after). "Ælfstan dux" subscribed charters of Kings Edward and Æthelstan dated between 901 and 934[694]. - Title Of Nobility: Ealdorman of Mercia
- LifeSketch: Aethelfrith is identified by some sources as the possible son of Prince Æthelhelm, oldest son of Æthelred I, King of Wessex (from 865 to 871). Both the historian Æthelweard and the Godwin Family (as in King Harold Godwinson), claimed descent from King Æthelred I, and could therefore be descended from Aethelfrith. One of the sources which identifies him as Æthelhelm's possible son, 'The Foundation for Medieval Genealogy', also points out the doubtfulness of the relationship. There was certainly a real man named Aethelfrith who existed 901 to 904, for he witnessed charters and was reconfirmed as ealdorman of Wrington, Somerset. Nothing in the charters identifies him as the son of Æthelhelm or a relative of King Edward, who issued the charters. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Æthelfrith (/ˈæθəlfrɪθ/; died c. 904/915) was an ealdorman of southern Mercia, who flourished in the last two decades of the ninth century and the first decade of the tenth century. His father is unknown. He was married to Æthelgyth, daughter of Æthelwulf; Æthelwulf is unidentified, but a possible candidate is King Alfred the Great's brother-in-law, the ealdorman of the Gaini who died in 901. Æthelfrith was father to four ealdormen: Æthelstan Half-King (East Anglia), Ælfstan (Mercia), Æthelwald (Kent), and Eadric (Hampshire). "In 903 it happened to Æthelfrith, dux, that all his deeds of title perished in the destruction of a fire. Therefore impelled by such a necessity, the aforementioned dux asked King Edward, also Æthelred and Æthelflæd, who then held rulership and power over the Mercian people under the aforementioned king, also all the members of the witan, that they should permit him and give authorisation for the rewriting of replacement charters for him." Among the charters reissued was one "concerning that land of ten hides, namely at Islington, which Coenwulf, the celebrated king of the Mercians, gave to his faithful comes, Beornnoth, to be free for himself and for his heirs in perpetuity after him". It would appear therefore that Æthelfrith, or possibly his, wife, could trace his family roots to the old Mercian aristocracy. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Æthelfrith_of_Mercia ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Foundation for Medieval Genealogy ÆTHELHELM ([868/70]-898). King Alfred, under his will probably dated to [879/88], bequeathed estates at Aldingbourne, Compton, Crondall, Beeding, Beddingham, Burnham, Thunderfield and Earhing to "my brother's son Æthelhelm"[1542]. He is named in the will before his brother Æthelwold, and received more extensive estates, suggesting that Æthelhelm was his father's older son. "Æthelhel[m] dux" subscribed the same undated charter of King Alfred as his brother Æthelwald, although curiously Æthelhelm is not given the epithet "filius regis" in the charter, in contrast to Æthelwald. Æthelhelm had [one possible child]: i) [ÆTHELFRITH (-904 or after). According to Anscombe[1543], Æthelfrith was the son of Æthelhelm, son of Æthelred I King of England. However, this is unlikely to be correct from a chronological point of view. Any grandsons of King Æthelred could not have been born before [890] at the earliest, while Ealdorman Æthelfrith was definitely active in 901, and even as early as 884 if the subscriptions of charters of that date refer to the same person. Kelly accepts that "the generations are too crowded" but does not analyse the impact of the chronology on the viability of the proposed descent[1544]. "Æthelferth ealdorman/dux/comes" and "Æthelfrith dux" subscribed two charters of Æthelred Ealdorman of Mercia in 884 and four charters of King Edward dated between 901 and 904[1545]. - Father: Ælfgar of MERCIA
- Mother: Elfgifu DE WESSEX
- Birth: ABT 1030, Mercia, England
- Also known as: Burkheard
- LifeSketch: Burgheard, son of Ælfgar Burgheard (d. 1061) was a son of Ælfgar, Earl of Mercia. He was also the brother of Edwin and Morcar, who succeeded their father as earls of Mercia and Northumbria respectively during the reigns of Edward the Confessor and William I; as well as Edith, the second wife of Harold Godwinson. Through his father, Burgheard was the grandson of the famous Lady Godiva as well as Leofric, who was also earl of Mercia. Not much is known about Burgheard's life. However, it is known that he died in the spring of 1061 after returning from a journey to Rome and was buried in the abbey of Saint-Rémi in Reims. His parents subsequently granted the abbey an estate in Staffordshire and Shropshire, which became the endowment for Lapley Priory, as well as a beautifully illustrated gospel book, the only known example of an English grant to a French monastery. Although the true reasons for Burgheard's journey to Rome are unknown, it has been suggested that he was one of a number of Englishmen who went to Rome throughout 1061. It is probable that Burgheard was sent to Rome with Wulfwig, the bishop of Dorchester, as his business in Rome was especially important to the political machinations of Burgheard's family, possibly concerning the endowment of Stow Minster in Lindsey as Mercia vied for influence against the encroaching power of the House of Godwin. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burgheard,_son_of_%C3%86lfgar ------------------------------------------------------------------- from www.geni.com Burgheard Birthdate: circa 1030 (31) Birthplace: Mercia, England Death: 1061 (27-35) England? - Title Of Nobility: Earl of Mercia
- LifeSketch: Edwin (Old English: Ēadwine) (died 1071) was the elder brother of Morcar, Earl of Northumbria, son of Ælfgār, Earl of Mercia and grandson of Leofric, Earl of Mercia. He succeeded to his father's title and responsibilities on Ælfgār's death in 1062. He appears as Earl Edwin (Eduin comes) in the Domesday Book. His younger brother, Morcar was elected Earl of Northumbria when Tostig Godwinson was ejected by the Northumbrians (October 3, 1065). Tostig had been accused of robbing churches, depriving men of their lands and lives, and acting against the law. Edwin's sister, Ealdgyth, had been married to Harold Godwinson until the latter's death at Hastings on 14 October 1066. Career In 1066 Tostig raided in Mercia but was repulsed by Edwin and Morcar and fled to Scotland. Later in the year he returned, accompanied by King Harald Hardrada of Norway at the head of a huge Norwegian army, which defeated Edwin and Morcar at the Battle of Fulford near York (September 20). Harald and Tostig were in turn defeated and slain by Harold Godwinson's army, five days later at the Battle of Stamford Bridge (September 25). After Harold's death at the Battle of Hastings, where Edwin and Morcar were absent, they were the principal supporters of a new regime under Edgar the Ætheling, though they had wished the public to elect one of them king, but failed to take effective steps against the invading Normans and soon submitted to Duke William. In 1068, Edwin and Morcar attempted to raise a rebellion in Mercia but swiftly submitted when William moved against them. Edwin died in 1071; while making his way to Scotland he was betrayed by his own retinue to the Normans and killed. Lands Edwin's lands centred at Gilling West in his brother's Northumbrian earldom, were given to Alain Le Roux (also known as Alan Rufus) in 1071 or perhaps earlier, and the district was renamed Richmondshire, or the Honour of Richmond. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwin,_Earl_of_Mercia

- LifeSketch: Æthelswith (c. 838–888) was the only known daughter of King Æthelwulf of Wessex. She married King Burgred of Mercia in 853. The couple had no known issue. Her marriage probably signaled the subordination of Burgred to his father-in-law and the Saxon kingdom at a time when both Wessex and Mercia were suffering Danish (Viking) raids. Burgred also had ongoing problems with the Kingdom of Powys on his western border and in 853 Æthelwulf subjugated the Welsh state on Burgred's behalf. Repeated Danish incursions over the years gradually weakened Mercia militarily and in 868 Burgred was forced to call upon Æthelswith's brother King Æthelred of Wessex to assist him in confronting an entrenched Danish army at Nottingham. This was the last time the Saxons came to the aid of the Mercians and is also notable as the occasion on which Alfred the Great, another brother of Æthelswith's, married his Mercian wife Ealhswith. Burgred's reign lasted till 874 when the Vikings drove him from the kingdom and he fled to Rome with Æthelswith. He died shortly after. Æthelswith lived on in Italy, to be buried at Pavia in 888. geni.com Æðelswyð Birthdate: circa 838 Birthplace: Wessex, UK Death: 888 (45-54) Pavia, Italy Immediate Family: Daughter of Aethelwulf, king of Wessex and Osburga, Queen Consort of Wessex Wife of Burgred, king of Mercia Mother of Beorhtnoð, æthling of Kent and Beorhtweald, Ealdorman of Kent Sister of Æthelstan, king of Kent; Aethelbald, king of Wessex; Aethelbert, king of Wessex, Essex & Kent; Ethelred I 'the Pious', king of Wessex & Kent and Alfred the Great, King of the Anglo-Saxons

- Also known as: Godgifu of Mercia
- Also known as: Godgifu or God's Gift
- Also known as: Godiva of Coventry
- Title Of Nobility: Countess of Mercia
- LifeSketch: Godiva, Countess of Mercia, died between 1066 and 1086, in Old English Godgifu, was an English noblewoman who, according to a legend dating at least to the 13th century, rode naked covered only in her long hair through the streets of Coventry to gain a remission of the oppressive taxation that her husband imposed on his tenants. The name "Peeping Tom" for a voyeur originates from later versions of this legend in which a man named Thomas watched her ride and was struck blind or dead. «b»Historical figure«/b» Godiva was the wife of Leofric, Earl of Mercia. They had one known son, Aelfgar. Godiva's name occurs in charters and the Domesday survey, though the spelling varies. The Old English name Godgifu or Godgyfu meant "gift of God"; Godiva was the Latinised form. Since the name was a popular one, there are contemporaries of the same name. If she is the same Godiva who appears in the history of Ely Abbey, the Liber Eliensis, written at the end of the 12th century, then she was a widow when Leofric married her. Both Leofric and Godiva were generous benefactors to religious houses. In 1043 Leofric founded and endowed a Benedictine monastery at Coventry on the site of a nunnery destroyed by the Danes in 1016. Writing in the 12th century, Roger of Wendover credits Godiva as the persuasive force behind this act. In the 1050s, her name is coupled with that of her husband on a grant of land to the monastery of St. Mary, Worcester and the endowment of the minster at Stow St Mary, Lincolnshire. She and her husband are commemorated as benefactors of other monasteries at Leominster, Chester, Much Wenlock, and Evesham. She gave Coventry a number of works in precious metal by the famous goldsmith Mannig and bequeathed a necklace valued at 100 marks of silver. Another necklace went to Evesham, to be hung around the figure of the Virgin accompanying the life-size gold and silver rood she and her husband gave, and St Paul's Cathedral in the City of London received a gold-fringed chasuble. She and her husband were among the most munificent of the several large Anglo-Saxon donors of the last decades before the Norman Conquest; the early Norman bishops made short work of their gifts, carrying them off to Normandy or melting them down for bullion. The manor of Woolhope in Herefordshire, along with four others, was given to the cathedral at Hereford before the Norman Conquest by the benefactresses Wulviva and Godiva usually held to be this Godiva and her sister. The church there has a 20th-century stained glass window representing them. Her signature, Ego Godiva Comitissa diu istud desideravi [I, The Countess Godiva, have desired this for a long time], appears on a charter purportedly given by Thorold of Bucknall to the Benedictine monastery of Spalding. However, this charter is considered spurious by many historians. Even so, it is possible that Thorold, who appears in the Domesday Book as sheriff of Lincolnshire, was her brother. After Leofric's death in 1057, his widow lived on until sometime between the Norman Conquest of 1066 and 1086. She is mentioned in the Domesday survey as one of the few Anglo-Saxons and the only woman to remain a major landholder shortly after the conquest. By the time of this great survey in 1086, Godiva had died, but her former lands are listed, although now held by others. Thus, Godiva apparently died between 1066 and 1086. The place where Godiva was buried has been a matter of debate. According to the Chronicon Abbatiae de Evesham, or Evesham Chronicle, she was buried at the Church of the Blessed Trinity at Evesham, which is no longer standing. According to the account in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, "There is no reason to doubt that she was buried with her husband at Coventry, despite the assertion of the Evesham chronicle that she lay in Holy Trinity, Evesham." William Dugdale (1656) says that a window with representations of Leofric and Godiva was placed in Trinity Church, Coventry, about the time of Richard II. «b»Legend«/b» The legend of the nude ride is first recorded in the 13th century, in the Flores Historiarum and the adaptation of it by Roger of Wendover. Despite its considerable age, it is not regarded as plausible by modern historians, nor is it mentioned in the two centuries intervening between Godiva's death and its first appearance, while her generous donations to the church receive various mentions. According to the typical version of the story, Lady Godiva took pity on the people of Coventry, who were suffering grievously under her husband's oppressive taxation. Lady Godiva appealed again and again to her husband, who obstinately refused to remit the tolls. At last, weary of her entreaties, he said he would grant her request if she would strip naked and ride on a horse through the streets of the town. Lady Godiva took him at his word, and after issuing a proclamation that all persons should stay indoors and shut their windows, she rode through the town, clothed only in her long hair. Just one person in the town, a tailor ever afterwards known as Peeping Tom, disobeyed her proclamation in one of the most famous instances of voyeurism. Some historians have discerned elements of pagan fertility rituals in the Godiva story, whereby a young "May Queen" was led to the sacred Cofa's tree, perhaps to celebrate the renewal of spring. The oldest form of the legend has Godiva passing through Coventry market from one end to the other while the people were assembled, attended only by two knights. This version is given in Flores Historiarum by Roger of Wendover (died 1236), a somewhat gullible collector of anecdotes, who quoted from unnamed earlier writers. Other attempts to find a more plausible rationale for the legend include one based on the custom at the time for penitents to make a public procession in their shift, a sleeveless white garment similar to a slip today and one which was certainly considered "underwear". Thus Godiva might have actually travelled through town as a penitent, in her shift. Godiva's story could have passed into folk history to be recorded in a romanticised version. Another theory has it that Lady Godiva's "nakedness" might refer to her riding through the streets stripped of her jewellery, the trademark of her upper class rank. However, these attempts to reconcile known facts with legend are both weak; in the era of the earliest accounts, the word "naked" is only known to mean "without any clothing whatsoever". A modified version of the story was given by printer Richard Grafton, later elected MP for Coventry. According to his Chronicle of England (1569), "Leofricus" had already exempted the people of Coventry from "any maner of Tolle, Except onely of Horses", so that Godiva ("Godina" in text) had agreed to the naked ride just to win relief for this horse tax. And as a condition, she required the officials of Coventry to forbid the populace "upon a great pain" from watching her, and to shut themselves in and shutter all windows on the day of her ride. Grafton was an ardent Protestant and sanitized the earlier story. The ballad "Leoffricus" in the Percy Folio (ca. 1650) conforms to Grafton's version, saying that Lady Godiva performed her ride to remove the customs paid on horses, and that the town's officers ordered the townsfolk to "shutt their dore, & clap their windowes downe," and remain indoors on the day of her ride. «b»Peeping Tom «/b»The story of Peeping Tom, who alone among the townsfolk spied on the Lady Godiva's naked ride, probably did not originate in literature, but came about through popular lore in the locality of Coventry. Reference by 17th-century chroniclers has been claimed, but all the published accounts are 18th-century or later. According to an 1826 article submitted by someone well-versed in local history and identifying himself as W. Reader, there was already a well-established tradition that there was a certain tailor who had spied on Lady Godiva, and that at the annual Trinity Great Fair (now called the Godiva Festival) featuring the Godiva processions "a grotesque figure called Peeping Tom" would be set on display, and it was a wooden statue carved from oak. The author has dated this effigy, based on the style of armour he is shown wearing, from the reign of Charles II (d. 1685). The same writer felt the legend had to be subsequent to William Dugdale (d. 1686) since he made no mention of it in his works that discussed Coventry at full length. W. Reader dates the first Godiva procession to 1677, but other sources date the first parade to 1678, and on that year a lad from the household of James Swinnerton enacted the role of Lady Godiva. The English Dictionary of National Biography (D.N.B.) gives a meticulous account of the literary sources. The historian Paul de Rapin (1732) reported the Coventry lore that Lady Godiva performed her ride while "commanding all Persons to keep within Doors and from their Windows, on pain of Death" but one man could not refrain from looking and it "cost him his life"; Rapin further reported that the town commemorates this with a "Statue of a Man looking out of a Window." Next, Thomas Pennant in Journey from Chester to London (1782) recounted how "the curiosity of a certain taylor overcoming his fear, he took a single peep". Pennant noted that the person enacting Godiva in the procession was not fully naked of course, but wore "silk, closely fitted to her limbs", which had a colour resembling the skin's complexion. (In Chester's time around 1782 silk was worn, but the annotator of the 1811 edition noted that a cotton garment had since replaced the silk fabric.) According to the D.N.B., the oldest document that mentions "Peeping Tom" by name is a record in Coventry's official annals, dating to 11 June 1773, documenting that the city issued a new wig and paint for the wooden effigy.

- LifeSketch: Leofric (died 31 August or 30 September 1057) was an Earl of Mercia. He founded monasteries at Coventry and Much Wenlock. He is most remembered as the husband of Lady Godiva. Leofric was the son of Leofwine, Ealdorman of the Hwicce, who witnessed a charter in 997 for King Æthelred II. Leofric had three brothers: Northman, Edwin and Godwine. It is likely that Northman is the same as Northman Miles ("Northman the knight") to whom King Æthelred II granted the village of Twywell in Northamptonshire in 1013. Northman, according to the Chronicle of Crowland Abbey, the reliability of which is often doubted by historians, says he was a retainer (knight) of Eadric Streona, the Earl of Mercia. It adds that Northman had been killed upon Cnut's orders along with Eadric and others for this reason. Cnut "made Leofric ealdorman in place of his brother Northman, and afterwards held him in great affection." Becoming Earl of Mercia, which occurred at some date previous to 1032, made him one of the most powerful men in the land, second only to the ambitious Earl Godwin of Wessex, among the mighty earls. Leofric may have had some connection by marriage to Ælfgifu of Northampton, the first wife of Cnut, which might help to explain why he was the chief supporter of her son Harold Harefoot against Harthacnut, Cnut's son by Emma of Normandy, when Cnut died in 1035. However, Harold died in 1040 and was succeeded by his brother Harthacnut, who made himself unpopular by implementing heavy taxation during his short reign. Two of his tax-collectors were killed at Worcester by angry locals. The king was so enraged by this that in 1041 he ordered Leofric and his other earls to plunder and burn the city, and lay waste to the surrounding area. This command must have sorely tested Leofric, since Worcester was the cathedral city of the Hwicce, his people. When Harthacnut died suddenly in 1042, he was succeeded by his half-brother Edward the Confessor. Leofric loyally supported Edward when Edward came under threat at Gloucester, from Earl Godwin, in 1051. Leofric and Earl Siward of Northumbria gathered a great army to meet that of Godwin. His advisors counseled Edward that battle would be folly, since there would be important members of the nobility on both sides; the loss of these men, should many die in battle, would leave England open to its enemies. So in the end the issue was resolved by less bloody means: in accordance with Leofric's advice the settlement of the dispute was referred to the Witenagemot, and Earl Godwin and his family were outlawed for a time. Earl Leofric's power was then at its height. But in 1055 Leofric's own son Ælfgar was outlawed, "without any fault," says the "Anglo-Saxon Chronicle." Ælfgar raised an army in Ireland and Wales and brought it to Hereford, where he clashed with the army of Earl Ralph of Herefordshire and severely damaged the town. The "Anglo-Saxon Chronicle" wryly comments, "And then when they had done most harm, it was decided to reinstate Earl Ælfgar." Leofric died in 1057 at his estate at Kings Bromley in Staffordshire. According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, he died on 30 September, but the chronicler of Worcester gives the date as 31 August. Both agree that he was buried in Coventry at St Mary's Priory and Cathedral. Leofric was succeeded by his son Ælfgar as earl. Earl Leofric and Godiva were noted for great generosity to religious houses. In 1043 he founded and endowed a Benedictine monastery at Coventry. John of Worcester tells us that "He and his wife, the noble Countess Godgifu, a worshipper of God and devout lover of St Mary ever-virgin, built the monastery there from the foundations out of their own patrimony, and endowed it adequately with lands and made it so rich in various ornaments that in no monastery in England might be found the abundance of gold, silver, gems and precious stones that was at that time in its possession." In the 1050s Leofric and Godiva appear jointly as benefactors in a document granting land to the monastery of St Mary, Worcester, and the endowment of the minster at Stow St Mary, Lincolnshire. They are commemorated as benefactors of other monasteries as well, at Leominster, Chester, Much Wenlock, and Evesham. Apart from Northman, killed in 1017, Leofric had at least two other brothers: Edwin was killed in battle by Gruffydd ap Llywelyn in 1039, and Godwine died some time before 1057. Leofric may have married more than once. His famous wife Godiva survived him and may have been a second or later wife. Since there is some question about the date of marriage for Leofric and Godgifu (Godiva), it is not clear whether she was the mother of Ælfgar, Leofric's only known child. If Godiva was married to Earl Leofric later than about 1010, she could not have been the mother of Ælfgar. Leofric used a double-headed eagle as his personal emblem, and this has been adopted by various units of the British Army as a symbol for Mercia. Historians disagree extensively on the character of Leofric. Folklore tends to depict him as an unfeeling overlord who imposed over-taxation, whereas many historians object to this, and consider it as part of the Lady Godiva myth; they suggest that he was a strong and respected leader. There is also great disagreement over his reputation as a military leader: some historians believe Leofric to have been weak in this respect, but others go as far as to give him the title "Hammer of the Welsh." A prose account of Leofric's life, entitled "Visio Leofrici" or the "Vision of Leofric," was written in Old English, surviving in MS Corpus Christi College, Cambridge (CCCC) 367. It is split into four episodes, each of which depict one of Leofric's miraculous visions. The last of these four has been noted for its similarities to the account of Leofric's vision in Osbert's later account of the life of Edward the Confessor. On screen, Leofric was portrayed by Roy Travers in the British silent short "Lady Godiva: (1928), George Nader in the film "Lady Godiva of Coventry" (1955), and Tony Steedman in the BBC TV series "Hereward the Wake" (1965). He also may have inspired "The Last Kingdom" character, "Leofric" played by Adrian Bower in the BBC series. -- Wikiwand: Leofric, Earl of Mercia

- LifeSketch: Morcar (or Morkere) (Old English: Mōrcǣr) (died after 1087) was the son of Ælfgār (earl of Mercia) and brother of Ēadwine. He was the earl of Northumbria from 1065 to 1066, when he was replaced by William the Conqueror with Copsi. In October 1065 Northumbrian rebels chose Morcar as earl at York.[1] He at once satisfied the people of the Bernicia by making over the government of the country beyond the River Tyne to Osulf of Bamburgh the eldest son of Eadwulf III of Bamburgh, the Bernician earl, whom Siward had slain in 1041. Marching southwards with the rebels, Morcar gathered into his forces the men of Nottingham, Derby, and Lincoln, members of the old Danish confederacy of towns, and met his brother Edwin, Earl of Mercia, who was at the head of a considerable force at Northampton. There the brothers and their rebel army considered proposals for peace offered to them by Earl Harold Godwinson. Negotiations continued at Oxford, where, the Northumbrians insisting on the recognition of Morcar, Harold yielded on the 28th, and Morcar's election was legalised.[2] York was surrendered, and Harold Godwinson had to march in haste to save the north by the Battle of Stamford Bridge. Ungrateful for this deliverance, Morcar and his brother held back the forces of the north from joining Harold, in the defence of the kingdom against the Normans. After the battle of Hastings, Morcar and his brother arrived at London, sent their sister Ealdgyth, Harold's widow, to Chester, and urged the citizens to raise one or other of them to the throne.[2] wikipedia

=Alfred of the ANGLO-SAXONS Marriage: 868, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, Kingdom of Mercia
- Father: Alfred of the ANGLO-SAXONS
- Mother: Ealhswith of Mercia
- Birth: ABT 869, Wessex, England
- Also known as: Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians
- Also known as: Ethelfled, Lady of the Mercians
- Also known as: Æthelflæd Alfredsdottir
- Also known as: Ethelfled fitz Alfred
- Marriage and Queen of Mercia: Æthelred became Lord of the Mercians (King) about 881, when Æthelflæd married him about 886 she became 'Lady of the Mercians' (Queen). Æthelflæd was 15 or 16 at the time of their marriage and Æthelred was 'considerably older'., 886, Wantage, Wessex
- St Oswald's Priory: St Oswald's Priory was founded by Æthelflæd and her husband Æthelred in the late 880s or the 890s. Both Æthelflæd and Æthelred are buried there., ABT 890, Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England
- ONLY ONE CHILD: Æthelflæd and her husband Æthelred had only one child, Ælfwynn whose birth was said to have almost killed Æthelflæd. According to William of Malmsbury, Æthelflæd took measures to make sure she had no more children., BET 886 AND 903, Glouster, Gloucestershire, Mercia, England
- FOSTERED ÆTHELSTAN, HER NEPHEW: It is believed that after the death of his mother and his fathers remarriage, Æthelstan went to live in Mercia, where his Aunt Æthelflæd and Uncle Æthelred continued his royal education. It appears that he looked upon them as loving parents and made a 'pact of paternal piety' with Æthelred.
- RESTORED TAMWORTH AND MADE IT HER PRINCIPAL RESIDENCE: Tamworth once the capital of Mercia was destroyed in 874. In 913 Æthelflæd rebuilt the ruined town, constructed a burh to defend it, and made Tamworth her principal residence. It is there that she died in 918., 913, Tamworth, Staffordshire, Mercia
- Myrcna hlædige, "Lady of the Mercians", Solitary Female Ruler: On her husband's death in 911, Æthelflæd became the sole ruler of Mercia. She is the only case of a female ruler of a kingdom in Anglo-Saxon history and her succession was "one of the most unique events in early medieval history"., BET 911 AND 918, Mercia, England
- BURIAL AT GLOUCESTER SIGNIFICANT: Æthelflæd's choice of burial is seen as significant. Had she been buried at Winchester it would have acceded Mercia's subordination to Wessex, her burial at Repton (traditional for Mercia) would have been seen as a declaration of independence. Her choice of Gloucester, a middle ground, is seen to signify her desire that Mercia maintain it's own identity but work in cooperation with Wessex., JUN 918, St Oswald's Priory, Gloucester, Mercia
- DAUGHTER SUCCEEDED BUT DEPOSED: Upon her death Æthelflæd's daughter Ælfwynn succeeded her to become Lady of Mercia, 18 months later in early December 919 she was deposed, removed from power by her uncle King Edward., BET JUN 918 AND DEC 919, Tamworth, Staffordshire, Mercia
- LifeSketch: Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians, was the eldest daughter of Alfred the Great, king of the Anglo-Saxons and his wife, Ealhswith of Mercia. It is believed she was born about 870. In the mid 880s (between 882 and 887) Æthelflæd married Æthelred, Lord of the Mercians, she would have been about 15, and it is believed he was "considerably" older. In the face of continuous Danish invasions, Æthelred had accepted Alfred's overlordship but the marriage cemented the alliance between Alfred and Mercia. Æthelflæd and Æthelred had one child, a daughter: - Ælfwynn, born about 888. Æthelred fought alongside Alfred until his death in 899 and continued to fight alongside Edward the Elder (his wife's brother) but it is believed his health began to decline between 899 and 909 and Æthelflæd became the de facto ruler of Mercia. Æthelflæd ruled Mercia in her own right as Lady of the Mercians from the time of Æthelred's death in 911 until her own death on 12 June 918. The accession of a female ruler in Mercia is described by the historian Ian Walker as "one of the most unique events in early medieval history". Unlike Æthelred who became ruler of Mercia through necessity, Æthelflæd actually descended from Mercian royalty on her mother's side. Her mother's mother, Eadburh, was a member of the Mercian royal house, probably a descendant of King Coenwulf. Thus Æthelflæd was half-Mercian. Æthelflæd's younger brother Edward married several times and his oldest son Æthelstan, from Edward's first marriage, was raised by his Aunt Æthelflæd in Mercia. Edward and Æthelflæd, working together, had much success against the Danes. It was only because his sister held Mercia so securely against Viking invasion that Edward was able to make such progress against the southern Danes. Æthelflæd led Mercian armies on expeditions, which she planned, and is described as "renowned as a competent war-leader". Æthelflæd successfully repelled Viking invasion after Viking invasion, 3 in 917 alone. In early 918, Æthelflæd gained possession of Leicester without opposition and most of the local Danish army submitted to her. A few months later, the leading men of Danish-ruled York offered to pledge their loyalty to Æthelflæd, Unfortunately, Æthelflæd died on 12 June 918 before they could pledge, and she was succeeded by her daughter Ælfwynn, but in December Edward took personal control of Mercia and carried Ælfwynn off to Wessex. Æthelflæd is buried at Saint Oswald's Priory in Gloucester.

- Father: Childeric of the Salian Franks MEROVINGIAN
- Mother: Basina von Thüringen
- Birth: ABT 470, Tournai, Hennegau, Fränkisches Reich
- Christening: ABT 496, Frankish Empire
- LifeSketch: PLEASE DO NOT MERGE THIS FILE THERE ARE MANY READ ONLY RECORDS IN THIS FAMILY Foundation for Medieval Genealogy ALBOFLEDIS (-after 496). Gregory of Tours names Albofled as sister of King Clovis, specifying that she was baptised but died soon after, St Rémy sending a letter of condolence to her brother[31]. From the context, it would appear that her baptism took place around the same time as her brother was baptised. “Remigius Episcopus” wrote to “Chlodoveo Regi” consoling him on the death of “germana vestra…Albochledis”[32].
- Death: 535, Frankish Empire

Gregory of Tours names Lanthechild as sister of King Clovis, specifying that she was baptised with him after having followed the Arian faith[27]. She converted to Arianism, according to the title of one of the sermons of Avitus Bishop of Vienne _________________________________________________ Lantechildis (or Lenteildis) was a Frankish noblewoman, the daughter of the Frankish king Childeric I (d. 481) and the Thuringian noblewoman Basina (d. 477). She was a sister of Clovis I. She converted to Arianism and received Arian baptism. She may have been influenced to convert after her sister Audofleda converted at her marriage to the Ostrogothic king Theoderic the Great. Later she converted again and received a Catholic baptism like her brother and sister, Albofledis. Clovis' baptism took place between 496/498 and 508/509. She is mentioned in Gregory of Tours and the Liber historiae Francorum. Her conversion from heresy was the subject of a sermon by Bishop Avitus of Vienne entitled in Latin Homilia de conversione Lenteildis Chlodovaei sororis, "Homily on the conversion of Clovis' sister Lenteildis". Avitus preached the sermon at her baptism.

John (MQGW-DKW). 5. Mary (L2Y8-KCC). All her children were under age in 1556, thus they were born after 1545. They, she and husband all mentioned, thus all living as of 1556. Ann was the fourth and youngest daughter.

Essex, dated 23 August 1503. He bequeathed to his wife (L5Z2-MMX) one half of his household stuff and all the stuff she brought with her on their marriage; also his lands at the Churchgate of Ramsey, to her and her heirs forever. To his son Thomas (L417-KSC), his houses in Herwych [Harwich, co. Essex], to him and his heirs forever. To his son Robert (KH4G-VKC), a. trunk. To his four daughters (), £10. To John Flecher (), his part of the quay in Herwych, he paying the testator’s executors 40s. Executors: His wife Christian Merveyn (L5Z2-MMX), his son John Merveyn (M5JY-R6S), and Thomas Gray (). To his son John (M5JY-R6S), his house at Bridge with all the lands thereunto belonging and [lands at] Kent in the Soken, to him and his heirs forever. Witnesses to this nuncupative Will: John Cuko (); John Rande (); Water Hunt (); Reynold Edgar (), bailly of Herwych; George Hasketh (); Thomas Doye (); Lawrence Yong (); William Pyerce (); Emme White (); John Perdryche (). Proved, 11 April 1504, by John Wro (), proctor to the executors (P.C.G., 5 Holgrave). 1. THOMAS MERVYN(or MERVEYN) (9H8X-RHH),of Ramsey, co. Essex, the testator of 1503, may by a bare possibility have been the son of Robert Mervyn () of Ipswich, co. Suffolk (No. 3 in English Ancestry, pp. 25-30). It will be noticed that the testator of 1503 named a son Robert (KH4G-VKC). This suggestion is, however, of an extremely tentative variety, for there is no proof at all of this identification. Thomas Mervyn (9H8X-RHH) was obviously a man of considerable substance. He bequeathed property at Ramsey, at Harwich, and elsewhere in the neighborhood. He may have married more than once, and it is not possible to judge from the terms of his will whether his wife CHRISTIAN (L5Z2-MMX) was the mother of his children, or not. She survived him, and was co-executrix of his will. Thomas Mervyn (Merveyn) (9H8X-RHH) probably died soon after 23 Aug. 1503, the date of his will, and certainly before 11 April 1504, the date of probate. He was buried in the Church of St. Michael the Archangel at Ramsey. Children (order unknown): 2. i. JOHN (M5JY-R6S), co—executor of his father’s will, and therefore probably the eldest son, b. (say) 1480. 3. ii. THOMAS (L417-KSC), b. (say) 1485. 4. iii. ROBERT (KH4G-VKC), b. (say) 1490. iv. Daughter (M1F6-5J2), living in 1503. v. Daughter (9HGB-WSZ), living in 1503. vi. Daughter (LT5S-WHZ), living in 1503. vii. ANN (LZ64-2YQ) (No. 9 in English Ancestry, pp. 31, 50), living in 1503. She was apparently the youngest of this family. She m. ROBERT BORFLETE (L2Y8-VN6), seemingly a. resident of Harwich or Dovercourt, co. Essex.
