- Father: Fulcuich of MORTAGNE
- Mother: Melisende DE CHÂTEAUDUN
- Also known as: Hugues du Perche
- Accomplishment: ABT 980
- Title Of Nobility: Vicomte de Châteaudun, Archbishop of Tours
- LifeSketch: Hugues du Perche is mentioned in a charter of Franco, bishop of Paris, dated 26 May 1028, which states that count Aubry of Gâtinais (son of a deceased count Geoffroy of Gâtinais) had two brothers and heirs Geoffroy and Liétaud, sons of Hugues du Perche ["... Albericum, illius supradicti Gosfredi filium et heredem, et insuper, faventibus fratribus ipsius Alberici, filiis Hugonis Pertice, scilicet Gosfredo et Letoldo, ..." Cart. Notre-Dame de Paris, 1: 326-7 (#19); Devaux (1885), 81-2 (Pièces justificatives II); see the page of Geoffroy (III) for a quote of the entire charter]. There is no information about whether Hugues was still alive on that date, and Hugues is not identified beyond his desgnation of "du Perche" (Pertice). This otherwise obscure individual is notable as being the earliest well-documented direct male-line ancestor of the "Plantagenet" dynasty. Possible father: Fulcois, count [of Mortagne?]. Possible mother: Melisende, still living 1031×2. Although these are the principal candidates for the parents of Hugues du Perche who have emerged in discussions of his parentage, and no likelier candidates have been put forward, it is still difficult to accept these with any more confidence than the qualification of "possible" given here. This possible origin of Hugues will be discussed in detail in the Commentary section below. Commentary Who was Hugues du Perche? Hugues du Perche is mentioned without further details as the father of Geoffroy and Liétaud in the 1028 charter noted above, and tracing him further is hindered by the fact that there is no other known early document unambiguously mentioning the same person. Thus, the investigation of his parentage depends almost exclusively on whatever information can be gleaned from the name "Hugo Perticae". As Béatrix was a daughter from a significant comital family, her second husband would presumably have been from a notable family himself. If Hugues had an origin that can be discerned from the designation Perticae, this would likely indicate that he belonged to the family of the counts of the Perche. - LifeSketch: Wikipedia Cador (Latin: Cadorius) was a legendary Duke of Cornwall, known chiefly through Geoffrey of Monmouth's pseudohistorical Historia Regum Britanniae and previous manuscript sources such as the Life of Carantoc.[1] Early sources present Cador as a relative of King Arthur, though the details of their kinship are usually left unspecified.[2] Historicity Many stories involving Arthurian figures were likely passed down orally, which has led to many different interpretations and versions of the people and characters mentioned.[3] Scholars generally question the historical accuracy of these tales. Evidence shows that people like Arthur may have been real historical figures. However, most of the deeds of Arthur have been discredited. Because of this, the people he is associated with and their stories could be solely a part of the orally passed down myths of Arthur's legacy and not true history. One of these figures was Cado, a successor of Geraint ab Erbin and a close associate of Arthur. Cador, the Duke of Cornwall, was a member that was summoned to Arthur's court. While it seems that Cador the Duke of Cornwall could have been a real historical figure, interpretations and stories that include him are very diverse in their information so understanding the true historical context of figures like him is difficult. Sources like King Arthur: The Truth Behind the Legend explain how the Arthurian history has been mixed with fact and fiction which means many events and figures could not have been accurate. “The Arthurian saga is nevertheless much more than a hotchpotch of tales made up by medieval minstrels, and it is essential to try to separate the Arthur of the romances—the Arthur of Geoffrey of Monmouth, Thomas Malory and the medieval troubadours—from the historical Arthur—the dark age warrior on whom all the rest of the super-structure was built”. Scholars were able to narrow down the true historical facts of Arthur's life to two things. “ Some scholars have taken everything out, argued everything away, leaving just two brief mentions in the Easter Annals: 516: Battle of Badon, in which Arthur carried the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ on his shoulders for three days and three nights, and the British were victors. 537: Strife of Camlann, in which Arthur and Medraut perished [or fell]” (King Arthur: The Truth Behind the Legend). However, there is still a lot of information that is debatable of being facts or a part of the pseudohistory.[4] Arthur, who died May 21, 542 A.D., gave his crown to Constantine who was the son of Cador the Duke of Cornwall noting the possible time period and years in which Cador could have lived.[5] Name The name “Cador” does not match any early Welsh sources, so the name itself comes either the misinterpretation of the Harley genealogy name “Catgur” or the British “Catigern”. Both names are interpreted similarly showing that the name Cador means "battle notable" or "fighter" due to the fact that “Cat” means battle and “Gur” means man or warrior while “Tigern” means leader. Where the name Cador came from is a mystery due to the fact that it is not found in early Welsh sources, but it was very easy for letters to be dropped out of “Catgur” or “Catigern” causing the name Cador to be formed.[6] Cador, who was mainly mentioned by Geoffrey of Monmouth, has also been called/recognized by two other names: Cado and Cadwy in different works like Myvyrian, Life of S. Carannog, and early fifteenth century pedigrees.[7] His title Duke of Cornwall was also a title that took on different forms over history because Cornwall was once a part of the Roman civitas Dumnonia, giving Cador the name King of Dumnonia which is recognizable in many works. Origins and relations Cador was reputed to be the son of Geraint ( Latin Gerontius, Cornish Gerrens ) who a King of Dumnonia and an historic hero that died quite early leaving his rule to Hoel because Cador was not at a proper age for leadership. He was known to have children himself who go by the names Constantine (Welsh Custennin) Peredur, and Cadoc. He had shared lineage with King Arthur due to the fact that he was the great grandson of Arthur's Duke, based on the idea of Custennyn and Constantine genealogies being equivalent to each other.[8] Cador also had three brothers by the names of Cyngar, Iestyn, and Selyf who are all saints of Llancarfan and are mentioned to be related to Cador in the Myvyrian.[9] Along with his brothers, Cador was known to have a sister named Gurguint who was married to Caradoc Vreichfas who was a legend in Welsh history and was alive during the same time period as Arthur.[10] According to writings from Geoffrey, Cador was married to a woman named Ygerna, who was courted and tricked by Arthur's father Uther Pendragon while Cador was away in battle.[11] Cador is also thought to have been related to Arthur because he is addressed as so in different texts. Layamon, an English poet, writes that Arthur said, “Cador, thou art mine own kin”(King Arthur's Children: A Study in Fiction and Tradition, pg.98). However, it is also made known in some works that Constantine, who was established to be Cador's son, was Arthur's cousin making Cador a possible in-law relative rather than through blood.[12] Cador’s battles Cador's battles are not recorded in the Historia Brittonum Arthurian Battle list but are mentioned in many different works. He battled in Saxons, and oversea impending force to Arthur, as they were on their way to York. Before they reached that place, Cador used his army to defeat them and took over York. After the defeat, the Saxons surrender to a pledge of peace and retreat. The Saxons break the pledge of peace they made an oath to while on sea, which leads to another battle between the Saxons and Arthur. In that battle, Cador killed the Saxon leader named Chelric. His next big battle was at Camblan although there were a few little altercations in between like the Roman War. At the battle at Camblan, Cador is found dead with some of his troops, thus marking an end to his battles.[13] Historia Regum Britanniae/Arthurian pseudohistory Cador, Duke of Cornwall, appears in Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae (ca. 1135). He is a man of power, as he is referred to as both a duke (dux) and a king (rex) throughout the text. He is known best for his heroism in the battles in York and Isle of Thanet told in Historia Regum Britanniae. Although he is highlighted for his great strength and involvement as a hero, none of Cador's battles appear in the Arthurian Battle list. The legitimacy and accuracy of Cador's involvement with these wars remain in question by scholars. He is successful in both battles, easily defeating the army in York as well as killing the leader of the Saxon barbarians, Chelric, on the Isle of Thanet. Arthur's most successful siege, the Battle of Bath, proceeds the battle at the Isle of Thanet: strangely illogical given the timeline. Even so, Cador undermines the success of Arthur as he won against the Saxons in a far off region. Historians from both Saxony and Britain do not note on any battle occurring in that region until the sixth century. The legitimacy of this battle could be completely fabricated for literary purposes.[14] Anglo-Saxon Chronicle Scholars have speculated that the legitimacy of Cador's battles can be found through the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, presumably written by Alfred the Great. Since there is only one named British Commander, Vortigern, scholars have aligned the timelines in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and the Historia Regum Britanniae to assess the legitimacy of Cador. Many similarities between the battles can be noted. There is an encounter in York, or along the Canterbury-London road with anywhere between 3,000 and 4,000 British soldiers. Here, Arthur and the British retreat to London in both versions of history. The next battle with the supposed Cador is in Thanet, which is noted in both Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and Historia Regum Britanniae. The British Commander in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, despite being unnamed, is speculated to be the Cador in Historia Regum Britanniae because of the similarities.[15] Historical ruler Cado was the historical son of a Dumnonian king named Gerrens whom he succeeded as monarch. Traditionally he was a good friend of Arthur; they even ruled together in the Vita Sanctus Carantoci (Life of St. Carantoc). He also seemed to share a good relationship with King Caradoc of Gwent. Possibly he gave his name to four hillforts, all named Cadbury which may be "Cado's fort", one each near to Clevedon, Congresbury and Sparkford in Somerset and one by the Exe in Devon north of Crediton. Cadson Bury[16] hill fort lies just outside Callington, also known as Celliwig in Cornwall. Legend In Geoffrey's History and elsewhere, Arthur's future queen Guinevere was raised as Cador's ward. Cador is also said to be of Roman stock. His son Constantine was given the kingship of Britain by Arthur as the latter lay ailing on the field of Camlann. To the Brut Tysilio the translator adds the information that Cador was son of Gorlois, presumably by Igraine, which would make him Arthur's maternal half-brother. This same text also gives Cador a son, Mayric, who dies fighting the Romans. The same account appears in Richard Hardyng's Chronicle where Cador is called Arthur's brother "of his mother's syde." In Layamon's Brut Cador appears as a leader who takes charge of Uther's host when they are attacked by Gorlois while Uther is secretly lying beside Igraine in Tintagel. Most works, such as the English Alliterative Morte Arthure and Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur, however, call Cador Arthur's "cousin", though in the Alliterative text Arthur calls Cador his sister's son.

- Also known as: Dagr Spaka Dyggvasson
- Also known as: The Wise
- LifeSketch: King Dygve's son, called Dag, succeeded to him, and was so wise a man that he understood the language of birds. He had a sparrow which told him much news, and flew to different countries. Once the sparrow flew to Reidgotaland, to a farm called Varva, where he flew into the peasant's corn-field and took his grain. The peasant came up, took a stone, and killed the sparrow. King Dag was ill-pleased that the sparrow did not come home; and as he, in a sacrifice of expiation, inquired after the sparrow, he got the answer that it was killed at Varva. Thereupon he ordered a great army, and went to Gotland; and when he came to Varva he landed with his men and plundered, and the people fled away before him. King Dag returned in the evening to his ships, after having killed many people and taken many prisoners. As they were going across a river at a place called Skjotan's [the Weapon's] Ford, a labouring thrall came running to the river-side, and threw a hay- fork into their troop. It struck the king on the head, so that he fell instantly from his horse and died. In those times the chief who ravaged a country was called Gram, and the men-at-arms under him Gramer.[6][7]
- Death: 494, Varva, Gävleborg, Sweden

- Father: Phriapites father of ARSACES I
- Also known as: Parthian: 𐭀𐭓𐭔𐭊 Aršak
- Also known as: from Greek: Ἀρσάκης
- Also known as: Persian: اشک Ašk
- Title Of Nobility: King of the Arsacid dynasty
- LifeSketch: Arsaces I was the first king of Parthia, as well as the founder and eponym of the Arsacid dynasty of Parthia in the mid-3rd century BC, when he conquered the satrapy of Parthia from Andragoras, who had rebelled against the Seleucid Empire. He spent the rest of his reign consolidating his rule in the region, and successfully stopped the Seleucid efforts to reconquer Parthia. Due to his achievements, he became a popular figure among the Arsacid monarchs, who used his name as a royal honorific. By the time of his death, he had laid the foundations of a strong state that eventually would transform into an empire under his great-grand nephew, Mithridates I, who assumed the ancient Near Eastern royal title of King of Kings. Literary sources about Arsaces are very scarce and exclusively from contradictory Greek and Roman accounts written centuries after his death. His existence was even questioned by modern scholars until new studies and archaeological findings confirmed his identity in the 1960s. He is mostly known from sources who were hostile to him and his dynasty due to the later Roman–Parthian Wars. According to Roman historian Ammianus Marcellinus, Arsaces was a bandit of low birth, who invaded and conquered Parthia, killing its satrap Andragoras, who recently had won independence from the Hellenistic Seleucid Empire. In Iranian national history, Araces' descent is traced back to several mythical figures, such as Kay Kawad, Kay Arash, Dara the son of Homay, or Arash, the heroic archer-figure. The affiliation of Arsaces with Arash is due to the resemblance in their names and Arsaces' coins imitating Arash as a bowman. The most accepted theory about his origins is that of Greek geographer Strabo. According to Strabo, Arsaces was a Scythian or a Bactrian chieftain who became the leader of the Parni, one of the three tribes of the Dahae confederacy of Central Asia. The Dahae were excellent horsemen and thus possessed an extremely mobile force that was able to retreat to the south of the Aral Sea when endangered. Because of this, it was difficult for other empires to control them. The Dahae originally lived on the Jaxartes River in the 4th century BC, but gradually moved southward, possibly in the early 3rd century BC. They first migrated southeast to Bactria, but were driven away, and as a result changed their course to the west. They gradually started settling in Parthia, a region in the southeastern area of the Caspian Sea, which corresponded roughly to the present-day Khorasan Province of Iran and southern Turkmenistan. The region was then under the rule of the Seleucids. By 282/281 BC, Parthia was under considerable Parni influence, although the Parni were not the only people to migrate to Parthia; the region constantly was receiving new waves of Iranian migrants from the north. The Parni were an eastern Iranian tribe that practiced Iranian polytheism. By the middle of the 3rd century BC, however, they were assimilated into the local Parthian culture. They adopted Parthian, a northwestern Iranian language, and became adherents of the Zoroastrianism religion, even giving themselves Zoroastrian names, such as that of Arsaces' father, Phriapites, whose name was derived from Avestan ("father-lover"). Arsaces himself probably was born and raised in Parthia. According to French historian Jérôme Gaslain, Arsaces arguably could have spent much of his life in the Seleucid lands, and may even have belonged to the local elite of Parthia. -- Wikiwand: Arsaces I of Parthia

- Father: Eadwulf II OF NORTHUMBRIA
- Mother: Unknown Spouse of Eadwulf II of NORTHUMBRIA
- Birth: ABT 885, Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland, England
- Also known as: Uhtred, Ealdorman of the Five Boroughs
- Also known as: Uhtred Eadwulfsson, Ealdorman of Derbyshire
- Also known as: Uhtred MacEadulf
- Also known as: Uhtred mcEtulfe
- Also known as: Duke Uhtred
- NOT THE SAME AS "UHTRED THE BOLD": Uhtred the Bold (also known as Uhtred of Northumbria) who died in 1016, was a descendant of this Uhtred's brother Ealdred.
- LifeSketch: Uhtred, Ealdorman of Derbyshire was the son of Eadwulf II of Northumbria. He was most likely born about 885 (or before) at Bamburgh Castle in Northumbria. His father, Eadwulf, had 3 additional sons: Ealdred, Adulf (Æthelwulf), Osulf (Oswulf). They may have been Uhtred's full or half-brothers as the name of their mother or mothers is not known. In 926 King Æthelstan confirmed the land Hope and Ashford in Derbyshire to his "faithful man", Uhtred. Also confirming the land in succession to Uhtred's heirs. The charter (S 397) specifies that Uhtred had bought the land from the Scandinavians and was ordered to do so by King Edward the Elder and by Æthelred, Ealdorman of Mercia. Because Ealdorman Æthelred died in 911, we know this purchase took place in or before 911. This document is important not only because it places Uhtred as a landowner in 926 but it also tells us that Uhtred was an adult in 911, else he would not have been able to purchase the land, and was therefore born 891 or before. Uhtred, Ealdorman of Derbyshire, also known as Uhtred, Ealdorman of the Five Boroughs, Uhtred Eadwulfsson, Uhtred MacEadulf, Uhtred mcEtulfe, Duke Uhtred (Uhtred dux) and Uhtred of Derbyshire, is also sometimes thought to be the same as Uhtred Cild. Uhtred Cild, who is 1st identified in a charter dated 955, in which he is recorded as "Uhtredo Child", which translates to "Uhtred the Child", is not likely to be the same person. He is in fact, believed by some historians, to be the son and heir of Uhtred, Ealdorman of Derbyshire. This would account for why he was recorded as "Uhtred the Child" to distinguish him from other previously recorded Uhtreds, and to identify him as the 'child' of that Uhtred. Uhtred Eadwulfsson, Ealdorman of Derbyshire, appears in charters from 926 to 949. Then after an absence of 5 years, Uhtred Cild appears. It is believed by most historians that Uhtred Eadwulfsson died in 949 (or 950), after attesting to charter S 544, in which he is identified as 'Uhtred Eorl'. It is not known where Uhtred was buried. ---------------------------------- Uhtred (fl. x 911–926, 930–50, and perhaps 955–58) was an ealdorman based in Derbyshire in the 10th century. His date of birth and origins are unclear, although it has been suggested by some modern historians that he came from Northumbria. He is thought to have been the thegn who, having purchased land at Hope and Ashford in Derbyshire from the Vikings before 911, had it confirmed by King Æthelstan in 926. He was ealdorman in or before 930. It appears that he witnessed charters during the remainder of the reign of Æthelstan, the reign of Edmund I (939–46) and the reign of Eadred (946–55), and the last king appears to have granted Uhtred land at Bakewell in 949. It is thought that Uhtred may have used this land to found a minster there. An Uhtred witnesses charters from 955 to 958, in the reigns of Eadwig the Fair (955–59) and Edgar the Peaceable (957–75), but some historians believe this to be a different Uhtred, perhaps Uhtred Cild. Thegn A charter dated to 926, preserved in the archives of Burton Abbey, has King Æthelstan confirm 60 hides (manentes) of land at Hope and Ashford in Derbyshire to his "faithful man", Uhtred. Uhtred is said to have purchased the land from the Scandinavians for twenty pounds of silver and gold, having been ordered to do so by Æthelstan's father and predecessor Edward the Elder and by Æthelred, Ealdorman of Mercia. As Ealdorman Æthelred had died in 911, the purchase must have occurred in or before 911. W. H. Stevenson in 1895 argued that this Uhtred was a member of the Bamburgh family, perhaps a son of Eadwulf II of Northumbria. Peter Sawyer added his support for Stevenson's northern origin theory in 1975, noting the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle version A (the "Parker Chronicle")'s claim that the "sons of Eadwulf", along with other northern potentates, submitted to Edward the Elder at Bakewell, Derbyshire, in 920. Sawyer further speculated on the course of events: the Bamburgh family acknowledged West Saxon supremacy c. 900, and the West Saxon king ordered them to buy up land in the Peak District; the area remained outside direct West Saxon control until 917, when the Scandinavians lost control of Derby; in 920, on the death of Queen Æthelfleda of Mercia, Edward became King of Mercia, soon after constructing a burh at Bakewell, on Uhtred's land Edward; Æthelstan succeeded Edward in 924, and confirmed Uhtred's lands in 926. Ealdorman, 930–40 From 930, a notable named Uhtred begins attesting royal charters as an ealdorman (in Latin, dux). Cyril Hart and Peter Sawyer believed that the thegn of the 926 confirmation was the same man as this new ealdorman. This man occurs as the fourth ealdorman in the list of secular witness to a charter of King Æthelstan to Beornheah, bishop of Selsey, dated 3 April 930 and issued at Lyminster in Sussex; then fifth in a grant by the king to Eadulf bishop of Crediton, at Chippenham in Wiltshire, nearly a month later on 29 April. The following year, on 23 March 931 at Colchester he is probably named as the fourth ealdorman on a list of witnesses; probably fifth on 20 June at Worthy in Hampshire, and fourth on 12 November at Lifton in Devon. He witnesses a further three extant charters of 932, on 30 August at Milton in either Kent or Dorset (fifth ealdorman), on 9 November at Exeter in Devon (seventh ealdorman), and on Christmas Eve at Amesbury in Wiltshire (as fourth ealdorman). Two subscriptions occur in 933, on 11 January (fifth ealdorman) and 26 January (fourth), respectively at Wilton and Chippenham, both in Wiltshire; two in 934, at Winchester and Nottingham on 28 May (eighth) and 7 June (fifth); and one in 935, on 21 December (fourth) at Dorchester. Simon Keynes' Atlas of Attestations lists this Uhtred as witness to nine more charters during Æthelstan's reign, three in 937, two in 938, and four in 939; he is the second ealdorman in all cases for the years 937 and 938, and in 939 he occurs fourth three times and fifth once. A problem is that from 931 to 935, two ealdormen with the name Uhtred witness royal charters. The charters labelled Sawyer numbers 412, 413, 416, 417, 418, 407, and 434 are all subscribed by two Uhtreds. Historian Cyril Hart argued in 1975 that this second Uhtred was an ealdorman of Essex, but by 1987 thought his jurisdiction fell over the shires of North-Western Mercia. Hart believed that this Uhtred's successor in North-Western Mercia was Æthelmund, ruling between 940 and 965. Ealdorman, 940–950 After the accession of Edmund I, Uhtred continued to witness royal charters, his name coming fourth, fourth, fourth, sixth, seventh, and fifth, in six surviving witness lists from 940. There are four appearances dating to 941, where his name falls seventh for three and sixth for one; and three for 942, his name ranking sixth once and eighth twice. He is fifth and sixth once, seventh three times, and eighth once in six charters dating to 943. He appears in one charter in 944, ranked seventh, and one charter of 946, ranked eighth. He subscribes two other extant charters that cannot be dated, where he is fifth and eighth. Uhtred witnessed one more charter in 946, falling to tenth among ealdormen, this time after the accession of Eadred to the English throne. After a gap of a few years, in 949 a Uhtred witnessed two charters, this time being placed sixth and seventh. In the same year Uhtred himself appears to be the beneficiary of a royal grant, receiving land at Bakewell from Eadred. He may have been granted this land in order to found or refound a religious house there, and the evidence indicates Bakewell became an important centre of sculpture during the century. Uhtred witnesses again in 950. Ealdorman, 955–59? Uhtred ceases to appear in witness lists c. 950, and it is unclear if the Uhtred who witnesses from 955 is the same ealdorman. In 955 Eadred granted Chesterfield in Derbyshire to "Uhtred the Child" (Uhtred Cild), who may be the same figure as the ealdorman, or may be a kinsman. Considering that Uhtred the ealdorman was by no means a child, would have been over 60 years old (possibly in his 70's or 80's in 955), and had never before been referred to as 'the Child', it is unlikely that he was the same person as "Uhtred Cild". As Uhtred Cild later (in 959) attested a charter (S 659) as Uhtred 'dux' or Ealdorman Uhtred, it is far more likely that he was the son of Uhtred (of Hope and Ashford) and that he inherited the position of ealdorman from his father. The charter that granted Uhtred the lands of Hope and Ashford in 926 also granted it in succession to his heirs. Uhtred Cild, whose name appears as "Uhtred the Child" (Uhtredo Child) in charter S 569, was likely identified in this manner to distinguish him from his father Uhtred. Uhtred the Child being the child of Uhtred the previous ealdorman. Peter Sawyer believed that Uhtred Cild was a separate figure, and that Uhtred Cild was responsible for the subsequent attestations with the name "Uhtred" in the period 956 to 958. D. H. Hadley likewise believed that Uhtred Cild was a separate person, the previous Uhtred dying after his last attestation in 950. Cyril Hart suggested that Uhtred Cild was Uhtred's son, and that Uhtred succeeded his father as ealdorman. During the reign of Eadred's successor Eadwig (955–59), probably in 956 (but perhaps in 959), an "Ealdorman Uhtred" witnessed the king's grant to Oscytel bishop of Dorchester (and later archbishop of York) of the minster of Southwell with its dependent lands in Nottinghamshire. He appears under King Edgar (957–75), subscribing three charters in 958. Dominion Whether the Uhtred above is one or many people, he is strongly associated with Derbyshire, and indeed this is regarded as the key to identifying him. Cyril Hart suggested that Uhtred was ealdorman of the Five Boroughs, as ealdormen in this period were rarely confined to one shire and as Derby was one of the Five Boroughs.
