- LifeSketch: Mithridates VI has been called the greatest ruler of the Kingdom of Pontus. He was a prince of Persian and Greek ancestry who claimed descent from Cyrus the Great, the family of Darius the Great, the Regent Antipater, the generals of Alexander the Great as well as the later kings Antigonus I Monophthalmus and Seleucus I Nicator. He was the first son of Laodice VI and Prince Mithridates V, himself a son of the former Pontic monarchs Pharnaces I of Pontus and his wife-cousin Nysa. Mithradates VI's mother Laodice VI was a Seleucid princess and daughter of the Seleucid monarchs Antiochus IV Epiphanes and Antiochus IV's wife-sister Laodice IV. His father was assassinated about 120 BC in Sinope, poisoned by unknown persons at a lavish banquet. His father left the kingdom to the joint rule of Mithridates IV, his mother Laodice VI, and his younger brother Mithridates Chrestus. Neither he nor his younger brother were of age, and their mother retained all power as regent for the time being. Her regency over Pontus was from 120 BC to 116 BC (or perhaps up to 113 BC) and she favored his brother Mithridates Chrestus over him. During her regency, he escaped from her plots against him, and went into hiding. Between 116 BC and 113 BC, he emerged from hiding and returned to Pontus, where he was hailed as king. By this time he had grown to become a man of considerable stature and physical strength, combining extraordinary energy and determination with a considerable talent for politics, organization and strategy. He removed his mother and brother from the throne, imprisoning both, and became the sole ruler of Pontus. -- Wikiwand: Mithridates VI of Pontus

- LifeSketch: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mithridates_II_of_Pontus Mithridates II (in Greek Mιθριδάτης; lived 3rd century BC), third king of Pontus and son of Ariobarzanes, whom he succeeded on the throne. He was a minor when his father died, but the date of his accession cannot be determined. It seems probable that it must have taken place well before 240 BC, as Memnon tells us that he was a child at his father's death, and he had a daughter of marriageable age in 222 BC. Shortly after his accession, his kingdom was invaded by the Gauls, who were eventually repulsed.[1] After Mithridates attained manhood, he married Laodice, a sister of Antiochus Hierax and Seleucus II Callinicus, with whom he is said to have received the province of Phrygia as a dowry. The political context of Mithridates II's marriage: In 145 BCE Antiochus Hierax, supported by his mother Laodice I who held influence in Anatolia,[2] demands the possession of Anatolia (Asia Minor) from his brother Seleucus II Callinicus and quickly declares his independence in order to expand his territory and his authority. Seleucus, struggling against the Ptolemaic forces in the south, has no choice but to tolerate. Mithridates II fought with his mother-in-law and Hierax and their allies, against his other brother-in-law Seleucus during a war between Seleucus and Antiochus Hierax. Eventually, Mithridates defeated Seleucus in a great battle at Ancyra in 235 BC whereby Seleucus lost twenty thousand of his troops and narrowly escaped with his own life. Hierax died in 226 BCE. In 222 BCE, Mithridates II gave his daughter Laodice in marriage to the Seleucid king Antiochus III. Another of his daughters, also named Laodice, was married about the same time to Achaeus, the cousin of Antiochus.[3] In 220 BC, Mithridates declared war upon the wealthy and powerful city of Sinope. However, he was unable to weaken it and the city did not come under the control of the kings of Pontus until 183 BC.[4] Earlier in his rule, Mithridates II vied with the other monarchs of Asia in sending magnificent presents to the Rhodians, after the destruction of their city by an earthquake in 227 BC.[5] The date of his death is unknown. He was succeeded by Mithridates III, his son with Laodice.

- Father: Mithridates II of PONTUS
- Mother: Laodice II of Syria SELEUCID
- Birth: ABT 225 BC, Pontus,Anatolia,Syria
- Also known as: König Mithridates IV von Pontos
- LifeSketch: Pharnaces I (Greek: Φαρνάκης; lived 2nd century BC), fifth king of Pontus and was of Persian and Greek Macedonian ancestry. He was the son of King Mithridates III of Pontus and his wife Laodice, whom he succeeded on the throne.[1] Pharnaces had two siblings: a brother called Mithridates IV of Pontus and a sister called Laodice who succeeded as Pontian monarchs on the throne.[2] He was born and raised in the Kingdom of Pontus. Life[edit] The date of his accession cannot be fixed with certainty; but it is certain, at least, that he was on the throne before 183 BC, in which year he succeeded in reducing the important city of Sinope, which had been long an object of ambition to the Kings of Pontus. The Rhodians sent an embassy to Rome to complain of this aggression, but without effect.[3] About the same time Pharnaces became involved in disputes with his neighbour, King of Pergamon, Eumenes II, which led to repeated embassies from both monarchs to Rome, as well as to partial hostilities. But in the spring of 181 BC, without waiting for the return of his ambassadors, Pharnaces suddenly attacked both Eumenes II and King Ariarathes IV of Cappadocia and invaded Galatia with a large force. Bronze shield in the name of King Pharnakes, Getty Villa (80.AC.60) Eumenes II opposed him at the head of an army: but hostilities were soon suspended by the arrival of the Roman Republic deputies, appointed by the Roman Senate to inquire into the matters in dispute. Negotiations were accordingly opened at Pergamon but led to no result, the demands of Pharnaces being rejected by the Romans as unreasonable; and the war was in consequence renewed. It continued, apparently with various interruptions, until the summer of 179 BC, when Pharnaces, finding himself unable to cope with the combined forces of Eumenes II and Ariarathes IV, was compelled to purchase peace by the cession of all his conquests in Galatia and Paphlagonia, with the exception of Sinope.[4] How long he continued to reign after this we know not; but it appears, from an incidental notice, that he was still on the throne in 170 BC, while he was certainly dead in 154 BC, when his brother Mithridates IV of Pontus is mentioned as King.[5] The Greek historian Polybius accuses Pharnaces of having an arrogant and violent character, siding with the opinion of Eumenes II and the Romans. Pharnaces married a Greek Seleucid Princess called Nysa, who was the child of princess Laodice IV and crown prince Antiochus.[6] Nysa and Pharnaces were related as the parents of Nysa were first cousins with Pharnaces. Pharnaces married Nysa either in 172 BC or 171 BC, through the diplomatic work of the Seleucid King Demetrius I Soter.[7] Honorific statues and inscriptions have survived that were dedicated to Pharnaces and Nysa. Pharnaces set about to establish good relations with the citizens of Athens and the Greek island of Delos. Pharnaces made a benefaction to the people of Athens. The exact nature of the benefaction is unknown, perhaps Pharnaces may have made some kind of voluntary donation to Athens, perhaps soon after 183 BC.[8] A lengthy honorific inscription from the Athenians on Delos honors Pharnaces and Nysa. Pharnaces and Nysa received a crown of gold from them and bronze statues of themselves were set up on Delos. Their lengthy Athenian honorific inscription, is dated in the Archonship of the Athenian Tychandrus or Tychander which is now generally accepted as 160 BC or 159 BC.[9] Nysa bore Pharnaces two children: a son called Mithridates V of Pontus and a daughter called Nysa of Cappadocia, who is also known as Laodice.[10] Nysa died at an unknown date in the 2nd century BC, she is believed to have died during childbirth, when she was giving birth to one of her children

- Residence: 1639, Windsor, Connecticut Colony, British Colonial America

- Also known as: Of Felstead John
- Arrival: 1638, Windsor, Connecticut Colony, British Colonial America
- Occupation: Appointed Constable, ABT 1640, Windsor, Connecticut Colony, British Colonial America
- LifeSketch: Immigrated from England to Colonial New England Disambiguation: The prominent Puritan John Porter of Felsted, Essex and Windsor, Connecticut must not be confused with two other John Porters who came to colonial New England at about the same time; one who settled in Rhode Island and the other who came first to Hingham, later locating in Salem. John Porter of Felsted and Windsor is NOT the father of Thomas Porter of Hartford, much less the fictitious "Thomas Edward Porter." (The latter non-entity would have also been of Hartford, if anyone by that name had ever drawn breath at the founding of the Connecticut Colony - which they didn't). John Porter was one of the founders of Windsor. He married once and only once, to Anna White, at Messing, Essex, 18 October 1620. She is sometimes referred to in various publications issued two centuries or more after her death as "Roseanna," but this name is bogus. There is no 17th century document calling her "Roseanna." John served as the Deputy from Windsor to the Connecticut Legislature on various dates during the period 1639 - 1647. Careless people have attributed to John and Anna (White) Porter various children (in addition to Thomas Porter) who were not theirs. These include a supposed son Robert born in 1624, but there is no basis for this, as no son Robert is listed in the will or probate of the putative parent John Porter (1648). Same with Joseph Porter, supposedly born either in 1634 in England or in 1638 in Hingham. This (the 1638 birth) was to John Porter, the mariner who later settled at Salem. That explains why John Porter of Windsor did not mention a son Joseph in his will. The pertinent entries from the Felsted parish register were transcribed long ago by Frank F. Starr and published in The Children of Robert White of Messing, Co. Essex, England by a Descendant, 1901. The transcription is available online at https://treearcheologyblog.wordpress.com/2016/03/28/my-notes-on-john-porter-anna-white/ courtesy of SPL. There is also reproduced on the same page a copy of the probate abstract. From user rhodesgrahamwarner2: From the Genealogy and Personal Memories of William R Cutter, Vol 2 pg 1328-1329 we find something about the origins of the Porter name. The ancestry of John Porter of Windsor, has been traced through 16 generations from him to William De La Grande, a No(sic: comment was truncated. The children of John and Anna Porter: 1. - LifeSketch: Samuel, son of John of Windsor of Windsor, Conn., was born in England in 1626. He came to America, with his parents, in 1630 and settled in Dorchester, Mass. He moved to Hartford, Conn. in 1636 and from thence to Hadley. In 1659 he married Hannah Stanley, daughter of Thomas Stanley. She came from England in the ship "Planter" in 1635 and settled with her parents In Lynn, Mass. Samuel and Hannah settled in Hadley in 1659 or 1660. While he was originally from Windsor, he might have resided for a short time, in Hartford, Conn., prior to moving to Hadley, Mass. Under the date of April 18, 1659 he, with others including Richard Montague, met in Hartford at the home of Goodman Ward. They entered into an agreement to remove from the jurisdiction of Connecticut to Massachusetts, at a place on the Connecticut River above Springfield, to be called Hadley. There were fifty-eight names on this article of agreement of which thirty-five were from Hartford, twenty from Weathersfield and included Samuel Porter, from Windsor. It is not certain whether Samuel Porter moved to Hadley in 1659 or 1660. The first Town meeting was called Oct. 8, 1660 at which time Samuel Porter and Richard Montague are recorded as being present. The home lots of Hadley were laid out to contain eight acres. Each lot was eighty rods long and sixteen rods wide, on two sides of a street or road twenty rods wide and about a mile in length. This road lay on the east side of the Connecticut River. The meadow land was afterward purchased and laid out from time to time, the lots of which were divided and awarded by the drawing of numbers. The size of each lot was to be fixed as each settler drew the prize, by the amount he had subscribed at the time of the engagement in 1659. In the first drawing of the home lots, Samuel Porter drew lot No. 17, containing about four and one third acres. Later more land was added and apportioned to the settlers at the rate of twenty-five and one quarter acres to the one hundred pounds subscribed. Samuel Porters subscription or engagement was one hundred and fifty pounds. On July 14, 1684 the town of Hadley voted to build a bridge over Mill River, at the mill, by tressels or otherwise, as the Selectmen and Samuel Porter Sr. should judge best. So it appears at this time, Samuel was either a bridge builder, a carpenter, or both and a man whose judgement on such matters was of importance to the Community. He owned a set of carpenter tools and probably used them. His son, Hezekiah, was also a carpenter. He also so appears on the school committee in 1686, and with three others of the committee, petitioned the County court at Springfield to straighten out the affairs of the school management, so that the grammar school might receive its just share from legacies left for that purpose by deceased citizens of Hadley. That he took an active part in educational matters is shown by the fact that he supplied school books, primers, spelling books, (Dilworth's) bibles, psalm books etc. Probably the only book store in Hadley and the surrounding country at that time. Samuel's son, Aaron a graduate of the Harvard College, taught the village school in 1708, and later was minister at Medford. Samuel Porter was one of the Selectmen of Hadley In 1667-1672, 1677-1683 and 1689, the time of his death. In 1676 he took care of most of the wounded soldiers and 'laid out much for their provisions and comfort'. This was in the war with the Narragansets. In 1681-82, Samuel was the largest taxpayer in Hadley. In the rate levied for the building of the Fox River Bridge, in 1687, he was the third largest taxpayer. Hezekiah, third son of Samuel Jr. was frequently mentioned as one of the Board of Selectmen Of Hadley up to 1704. Soon afterwards he moved to East Hartford, Conn. The other sons of Samuel and their descendants as late as 1846, frequently appear as Selectmen, Town clerks, Representatives, Senators, Counselors and Sheriffs and were leading men in their time in Hadley and Hampshire County. info from Find A Grave contributor Rebecca Dodds #48326113 One of the original 59 citizens that signed the agreement Apr 18, 1659 at Goodman Ward's home in Hartford to settle at Hadley, Mass. A Thomas STANSLEY was enrolled as a passenger on Planter in 1635, but no records of him in New England have been found. Anderson states that Savage attempted to connect Stansley with Stanley but he was incorrect. So, if Thomas Stanley arrived in 1634 and his daughter Hannah Stanley was born about 1640, then she was born in the USA and didn't arrive on Planter in 1635. Contributor: Bill Stiles (49763244) Baptized 3 June 1635 at Holy Cross Church, Felsted,Essex, England. He was one of the Founders in 1659 of Hadley. He was the father of 10 children. The inventory of his estate can be found in Hampshire Probate Records, Box 117, No. 25,3-9.
