MAUD MARSHAL, married ROBERT PONTE DE L'ARCHE (or PONT DEL ARCHE, PONTEARCHE), Knt., son and heir of William Pont de l'Arche, Chamberlain of Kings Henry I and Stephen, by ___, daughter of William Mauduit. They had one son, William, Knt., and five daughters, including Juliane and presumably Maud. In 1166 he held five knights' fees in Hampshire of John de Port. In 1179 he conceded the gift of his late sister, Emma, to Plympton Priory of land at Newton St. Cyres, in exchange for five marks from the priory. SIR ROBERT PONTE DE L'ARCHE was living in 1202. At his death, he was buried in the church at Southwick, Hampshire. Children of Maud Marshal, by Robert Ponte de l'Arche: a. WILLIAM PONTE DE L'ARCHE, Knt. She married before 11 June 1200 (as his 1st wife) ROBERT DE BERKELEY, Knt., of Berkeley, Gloucestershire, Justice intinerant, 1208, son and heir of Maurice Fitz Robert Fitz Harding (otherwise de Berkeley), of Berkeley, Gloucestershire, Bray, Devon, Acton, Gloucestershire, Portbury and Bedminster, Somerset, etc., itinerant justice, by Alice, daughter of Roger de Berkeley, of Dursley, Gloucestershire. They had no issue. In 1191 he paid £1000 to have livery of his inheritance. Sometime in the period, c.1191-1215, he granted Southwick Priory 2s. rent a year from a messuage and land in Berkeley, Gloucestershire for the improvement of the lighting of the Southwick church. He sided with the rebellious Barons against King John and was pardoned in 1214. He again rebelled and was excommunicated. His lands were restored in 1216-17 on payment of a fine of £966, excepting Berkeley. Sometime before 1215 his wife, Juliane, granted to Southwick Priory the tenement, held by free burgage tenure, which William Crassus [le Gras] sold to her in his great need, together with all his houses and a small messuage near the norwthwest corner of the cemetery of the church of St. Mary at Berkeley, Gloucestershire. His wife, Juliane, died 15 Nov. 1217, and was buried at St. Augustine's, Bristol. He married (2nd) in 1218 LUCY ___, kinswoman [neptis] of William Longespée, Earl of Salisbury. They had no issue. SIR ROBERT DE BERKELEY died 13 May 1220, and was buried at St. Augustine's, Bristol. His widow, Lucy, married (2nd) before 1222 (as his la wife) HUGH DE GOURNAY, of Wendover, Buckinghamshire, Caister and Cantley, Norfolk, Mapledurham, Oxfordshire, etc. [see GOURNAY 5]. They had no issue. He joined the barons against King John. In 1216 his manor of Wendover was granted to William de Fiennes, and in 1218 his lands in Lincolnshire to William de Cantelowe. His lands were restored 2 May 1222 (excepting Wendover). In 1223 the king ordered his lands in cos. Gloucester, Warwick, and Leicester be taken for attending a tournament without leave at Blyth, Nottinghamshire. The same year he lost all his land in the jurisdiction of the Constable of Bristol for hunting in the royal forest without leave. He fought against the Welsh in 1228 and in Brittany in 1234. His wife, Lucy, died 18 January 1234, and was buried at St. Augustine's. HUGH DE GOURNAY died shortly before 23 July 1238, and was buried at Langley Abbey, Norfolk. MAUD PONTE DE L'ARCHE (presumed daughter), married (1st) PHILIP DE BREWES, younger son of William de Brewes (or Breuse), of Bramber, Sussex, Tetbury, Gloucestershire, etc., seigneur of Briouze in Normandy, by Maud, daughter of Bernard de Saint Valery, Knt., of Isleworth, Middlesex, Tetbury, Gloucestershire, and Beckley, Oxfordshire. She married (2nd) WILLIAM FITZ WILLIAM, Baron of Naas, co. Kildare, son and heir of William Fitz Maurice, Baron of Naas, co. Kildare, by Aline, daughter of Richard de Clare, Earl of Pembroke [see PEMBROKE 4.ii for his ancestry]. They had three sons, David [Baron of Naas], William, and Maurice. He was granted Karakytell Castle, with five knights' fees, by King John in 1199, and five knights' fees in Karakytell and Kyldruman by William de Brewes about 1209. On 12 Sept. 1220 William baron of Naas and Eve [sic] his wife made fine with the king by 100 marks for having dower in the manor of Grene, co. - Cemetery: Abbey of Saint-Arnould
- LifeSketch: The only indication of Chrotrud's family membership arises from the information that Wido, lay abbot of Saint-Wandrille († executed 739), a close relative, propinquus, was Karl Martell's. Wido is mentioned as early as 715 as the brother of Bishop Milo of Trier and Reims and as the son of St. Liutwin. If one translates propinquus as brother-in-law and relates the connection to Chrotrud, she becomes a daughter of Liutwin and a member of the Widonen. This line of thought was published by Anton Halbedel in 1915 and has since been taken up several times, but it is only a h y p o t h e s i s . Rotrude (Chrodtrudis) (or Crotude, Chrotrude, or Ruadtrud; died 724) was the first wife of Charles Martel, Mayor of the Palace and de facto ruler of Francia from 718 to 741. She was the mother of Pepin the Short, King of the Franks, and therefore the grandmother of Charlemagne. Rotrude is believed to be the daughter of Lambert, Count of Hesbaye, although this designation is not without controversy, as discussed below. She is also referred to as Rotrude of Treves. Traditionally, the information available about the family background of Rotrude was the indication that Wido (Guy), Count of Hornbach and Lay Abbot of Fontenelle, was a propinquus of Martel. This kinship term, vague enough, means a close relationship with women: a brother, a cousin by women or a cousin by marriage. Wido is the brother of Milo, Bishop of Trier, and son of Saint Leudwinus, Bishop of Trier. Christian Settipani, in his work on the ancestors of Charlemagne, details an analysis by Anton Halbedel, first issued in 1915, and echoed by historians Joseph Depoin, Maurice Chaume and Szabolcs de Vajay. According to this analysis, the word propinquus implies "brother", so that Wido was Rotrude’s brother. Rotrude has therefore often been identified as the daughter of Saint Leudwinus. However, in Settipani’s Addendum to the Ancestors of Charlemagne,[1] he returns to this problem, reflecting thoughts of the medieval history professor Richard Gerberding, who believed that Rotrude’s background was related directly to the Robertians. He noted that Charles Martel had three wives and that Wido may be a relative of the other two. Settipani concludes that Rotrude was the daughter of Lambert, Count of Hesbaye, and so sister of Robert I, Duke of Neustria. In addition, Rotrude’s sister was named Landrada and was married to Sigramnus, Count of Hesbaye. Landrada and Sigramnus were parents of Saint Chrodegang, Bishop of Metz. Note that Rotrude and Charles had daughter also named Landrade, who is often erroneously identified as the wife of Sigramnus.[2] Rotrude and Charles had five children: Carloman, Mayor of the Palace Pepin the Short, King of the Franks and father of Charlemagne Hiltrude, Duchess Consort of Bavaria, married to Odilo, Duke of Bavaria (perhaps) Landrade (perhaps) Auda of France, married to Thierry IV, Count of Autun. After Rotrude’s death in 724, Charles married Swanachild and had one child Grifo. Charles also had a mistress Ruodhaid with whom he had numerous children. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotrude_of_Hesbaye

- Title Of Nobility: Mayor of the Palace of Austrasia, BET 715 AND 741, , , Kingdom of Austrasia, Francia
- LifeSketch: Charles, more commonly known as Charles Martel, was a formidable warrior and statesmen who thoroughly deserved his nickname of “the hammer.” Charles was the son of Frankish statesman Pepin of Herstal and his 2nd wife noblewoman Alpaida, he was born about 688. He had a brother named Childebrand, who later became the Frankish dux (Duke) of Burgundy. In older historiography, it was common to describe Charles as "illegitimate". But the dividing line between wives and concubines was not clear-cut in eighth-century Francia, and it is likely that the accusation of "illegitimacy" derives from the desire of Pepin's first wife Plectrude to see her progeny as heirs to Pepin's power. Charles Martel, as Duke and Prince of the Franks and Mayor of the Palace, was the de facto ruler of Francia from 718 until his death, 22 October 741 in Quierzy, France. Charles Martel married twice, his first wife being Rotrude of Treves. They had the following children: -Hiltrud, -Carloman, -Landrade, also rendered Landres -Auda, also called Aldana or Alane -Pepin the Short, also called Pippin Charles married a second time, to Swanhild, and they had one child: -Grifo Charles Martel also had a known mistress, Ruodhaid, with whom he had children: -Bernard -Hieronymus -Remigius. Archbishop of Rouen. Through his son Pepin the Short, Charles Martel was the grandfather of Charles the Great, otherwise known as Charlemagne. Charlemagne was originally named Charles after his grandfather.

- LifeSketch: Source. Keats-Rohan, K.S.B. Domesday People, pp.925-6 Filius Martini, Robert Son of Geva, daughter and heiress of Serlo de Burcy (q.v.) and her first husband Martin. He established a cell of Tiron at Cemais in Wales, and was a benefactor of the priories of Tiron of Goldcliff and Stogursey. He married first Matilda, daughter of Ranulf Peverel of Essex, fl. 1086, through whom he acquired interests at Vengeons, Manche, cant. Sourdeval, His second wife was Adelicia de Nonant, probably a daughter of Guy de Nonant, for whose soul, along with those of Robert's parents and sister, he made a grant to Totnes priory (Watkins, Totnes, priory deed, iv). A supporter of the Empress during the civil war. He was dead by 1159, when his heir was his infant son by his second wife, William I FitzMartin. He also left a daughter Sibil or Mabel, wife of Warin de Moncellis. See Maxwell-Lyte, 'Burci, Falaise and Martin', Proceedings of the Somersetshire Archaeological Society lxv; Sanders, 15. His son William confirmed a charter of Robert fitz Stephen concerning South Damerham and Martin (Hampshire) c. 1170 describing Robert's then deceased wife Matilda as his kinswoman, 'sponse sue consanguinee mee'(Cart. Glastonbury, 1169/629). His widow made a grant to Totnes priory for his soul and that of their son Robert, mentioning their suriving children William and Mabel (Watkins, Totness i, 57-58; ii plate xxi). Robert's family was associated with the abbey of St Dogmael's in Pembrokeshire where a false memory of Robert's father Martin 'of Tours' was preserved (Hist. of St Dogmael's, fols 20, 25). Martin is more likely to have been the Martin de Walis, i.e. Vaux, who attested a charter of Juhel of Totnes of c. 1084; cf. the prominence of a Hubert de Vals in Robert's charter for Cemais. Another of the witnesses to Juhel's charter was from Couvert, Calvados, arr. Bayeux, not from Vaux-sur-Seulles. For Robert's grandson Roger of Cockington and St Dogmael's, see FEA xi, 126.

- Please ** DO NOT *** use the book, Bouton--Boughton Family; Descendants of John Boution,: a Native of France, who Embarked from ... to make "corrections" to this file. IT IS FULL OF ERRORS.
- The book, The ancient historical records of Norwalk, Connecticut; with ...by: Edwin Hall, also has errors.
- And almost everything in the book, History of Fairfield county, Connecticut, with illustrations ...: about the Bouton family, is wrong.
- LifeSketch: Abigail has no birth record. She was the daughter of Matthew Marvin and his first wife Elizabeth. Matthew has a detailed write-up in The Great Migration (see attached under Sources). Abigail's parents came to New England in 1635 aboard The Increase. Matthew lived first in Hartford but removed to Norwalk in the Connecticut Colony in 1651. Several of Matthew and Elizabeth's children were born in England, including: 1. Elizabeth 2. Matthew 3. Mary 4. Sarah 5. Hannah and a couple of the youngest were born in Connecticut, including: 6. Abigail 7. Rebecca After the death of Elizabeth, Matthew married Alice, the widow of John Bouton before 1647, and they had additional children together: 8. Samuel 9. Rachel Matthew left a will dated 26 December 1678. Said will mentions wife Alice, son Matthew, grandson Matthew, son Samuel Smith, son John Bowton and daughter Abigail his wife, grandchild Richard Bushnell, Francis Bushnel, and his four daughters Mary Adgate, Hanna Semer, Abigail Bowton (again), and Rebecca Clarke. Abigail married, 1 January 1656/7, her step-brother, John Bouton. Abigail was living in 1 December 1680 when her step-mother/mother-in-law wrote her will, but may have died soon after. The book, Descendants of Reinold and Matthew Marvin of Hartford, Ct., 1638 and 1635, sons of Edward Marvin, of Great Bentley, England (see attached under Sources), has a good indexing of Abigail's father's will and her step-mother/mother-in-law's will. Abigail's husband married after her death someone named Mary, and had additional children. Abigail and John had the following children: 1. John, 30 September 1659 2. Matthew, 24 December 1661 3. Rachel, 15 December 1667 4. Abigail, 1 April 1670 5. Mary, 26 May 1671 (died young) 6. Hannah, 1673? 7. Elizabeth, 1677? *8. Joseph ? The last three mentioned don't have birth records. Only the father John is mentioned in any of the birth records; Abigail is not mentioned. Joseph seems to be of an age to belong to first wife Abigail. But he has no birth record. He is not included as a son of Abigail in the book, Descendants of Reinold and Matthew Marvin of Hartford, Ct., 1638 and 1635, sons of Edward Marvin, of Great Bentley, England. I don't know why. However, Joseph is included as a son of Abigail in the book, History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield, Vol. I. See attached under Sources. Also, Joseph does not seem to inherit anything from his father's second wife, Mary. On 16 July 1720, Mary Bouton of Norwalk "distributed property" to sons Thomas and Richard Bouton, to daughter Mary Morehouse, and to grandchildren Mary Hayes, Ruth Bouton and Gabriel Morehouse. Joseph was not included. John married Mary after Abigail's death. We know they had sons Thomas and Richard, and the second Mary. John left behind a will dated 25 December 1706: In the name of God Amen. December twenty-fifth, One Thousand Seven Hundred and Six. I, John Bouton, Senior, of ye town of Norwalk in the county of Fairfield, Colony of Connecticut, being by the hand of God upon me weak and infirm of body but of perfect mind and memory (thanks be given unto God Therefor) calling unto mind ye mortality of body, and knowing that it is appointed unto all men once to die - Do make and ordain this my last will and Testament. Principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of God who gave it, and my body I recommend to the earth, after death, to be decently and Christian like buried at the discretion of my friends, nothing doubting but at ye general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God. And as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life, I give, demise and dispose of the same in following manner and form: After my just debts and funeral charges are paid and legacys payd and discharged. Imprimus: I do give unto Mary Bouton, my beloved wife, half my homestead and the whole house and half my barn, that side of my home lot of land at fruitful spring, and also I doe give to my said wife two cows and all my movable estate, as shall or may remain when all debts and dues are paid, as above said. Also my will is that what movable estate I had of her at marriage with her shall not be inventoried as my estate, but to remain to all the above mentioned estate I doe give unto her during her natural life. Item: I do give to my grandchild, John Bouton, of Danbury, the sum of five shillings. Item: I do give unto my son Matthew Bouton, besides what I have already given him as portion, the sum of five shillings. Item: I do give to my son Joseph Bouton and to his assigns all my right, title and interest in land lying near Ebenezer Canfield's land over the river in the bounds of Norwalke; also my part in barren Marsh creek, he paying to my daughter Abigail Smith the sum of five pounds. Item: I do give to my daughter Rachell Sension, besides what she has had as portion already, the sum of five shillings. Item: I doe give unto my daughter Abigail Smith the sum of five shillings. Item: I doe give unto my daughter Hannah Betts the sum of five pounds, to be paid by Joseph Bouton as above said and my two sons Thomas and Richard Bouton equally between them when they shall attain the age of twenty-three years. Item: I doe give unto my son Thomas Bouton and to his assigns my Cove lot: also half my meadow lying on west of ye Cove over the river in the bounds of Norwalk: also one-half of my land lying between the parts of Norwalk river, near ye staddles, being in quantity eighteen acres and a half of land; also seven acres at Cranberry Plains in ye borders of Norwalk; also five acres of land in ye Indian fields; also half a meadow above Silver Mines, so called. Item: I doe give unto my daughter Elizabeth Waring, to be paid by my two sons Thomas and Richard Bouton, equally between them when they shall attain to the age of twenty-three years, the sum of five pounds. Item: I doe give my son Richard Bouton and his assigns that lot lying in the field behind Moor, so called, near ye swamp called Bouton's swamp; also half of my meadow on ye west of the Cove; also half my land between ye parts of the Norwalk river, being eighteen acres and a half; also seven acres at Cranberry Plains; also half of my meadow above Silver Mines, so called; also half of my swamp and meadow east of Pine Hill lyin in the common field. Item: I do give to my daughter Mary Bouton the sum of five pounds, to be paid by my two sons Thomas and Richard Bouton when they shall have attained the age of twenty-three years. Item: I doe give to my three sons Joseph, Thomas and Richard Bouton my whole right of bogg lying on the mill brook and all my commonage equally to be devided between them. Item: The half of my home lot not given to my wife and half of ye barn not given I doe give to my two sons Thomas and Richard Bouton and their assigns equally between them. I doe give to my two sons Thomas and Richard twenty acres of land lying on ye east side of Five Mile river equally between them; and furthermore I do make and ordain my beloved wife and my son Joseph Bouton administrators of this my will, and that this is my last will and testament, revoking and making void any and all former wills and settlements that have been by me made. In testimony whereof, I, John Bouton, Senior, have set to my hand and seal the day and year above written. Ye signment John Buton (Seal)

Her first marriage must have occurred at Hartford not later than 1639 (probably in 1636 or 1637), for by that husband "Jo. Bowton" she had borne there John II, Richard (who is recorded as having become twenty-one years old before May 1, 1660) [Records of the Colony and Plantation of New Haven, p. 141], and Bridget Bowton; her husband had died; she married again, and had a son Samuel Marvin, by her second husband, baptized at Hartford February 6, 1647/8. It has been thought that this Samuel was her second child by Marvin, but the supposed first child, Lydia Marvin, who if born at all, died young, is not proved of record. Nevertheless, here were three births, a death of one husband, a marriage to another, and one or two more births, all occurring at Hartford before February 6, 1647/8. This places the marriage of John Bowton and Alice at Hartford not later than 1638; his son Richard, probably a second son, was born not later than July, 1639. "

EDWARD MERVYN, MARVEN or MARVIN (L9C6-MZJ) (Raynold, John, Thomas), of Ramsey, Wrabness and Great Bentley, co. Essex, yeoman, was under 21 when his father made his will, 22 December 1554. In that will, Edward received a tenement and lands, both free and copyhold, in the parish of Wrabness. These lands, together with an adjoining parcel of land in the parish of Wix, Edward bequeathed in 1615 to his eldest son, Edward, Jr (DH9V-RL4). Edward Marvin (L9C6-MZJ) was a man of considerable wealth, for he held property not only in the parishes of Wrabness and Wix, but also in Ramsey, Frating and Great Bentley, and he resided in Great Bentley during the latter part of his life, in a mansion house called “Edons alias Dreybroeks.” There is an account of Edward and his family in the English Ancestry, pp. 77 and 105-115, and in Descendants, pp. 20 and 22-26. Edward died at Great Bentley on 13 or 14 November 1615. His will was dated the 13th, and he was buried at St. Mary’s Church, Great Bentley, 15 November 1615. His will was proved 17 January 1615/6. He married MARGARET (284H-2MM), Who may, or may not, have been the mother of all his children. She survived him, and was buried at Great Bentley 28 May 1633. Children (order uncertain): i. EDWARD (DH9V-RL4), b. perhaps in 1581, or earlier. He inherited the ancestral property in Wrabness, and also property in Wix. He also acquired lands and houses in Great Bentley and Thorington. There is an account of him and his family in Descendants, pp. 26-27, and in the English Ancestry, pp. 110 and 137-145. He resided chiefly at Thorington, and was buried in the Churchyard of St. Mary Magdalene there. The date of his death is not known. His will was dated 30 Dec., but no year was written, though 1622 may have been intended. In this will, he bequeathed to his wife “Bettres,” (K89N-LTP) his daughter Susan (KCFW-TWL) and son Edward (MZTJ-K52) (minors); and he mentioned his brothers Thomas (LD7M-12R), Richard (LVY6-725), Robert (LVY6-WQK), Reinold (KD9Y-H6H) and Matthew (L222-HLX). The will was proved 1 March 1622/3. Edward m. at Great Bentley, 12 Aug. 1604, Bettris [Beatrice] SADLER (K89N-LTP), who survived him, and was sole executrix of his will. Children: 1. Susan (KCFW-TWL), bap. at Great Bentley 14 July 1605. 2. Edward (MZTJ-K52), probably b. at Thorington, perhaps ca. 1607. ii. THOMAS (LD7M-12R), b. perhaps in 1583. He was supervisor of his father ’s will in 1615, and in this will received a tenement and lands in Ramsey; and he was also supervisor of his brother Edward ’s will in 1622/3. He is mentioned in the English Ancestry, pp. 110 and 145-146, and in Descendants, p. 25, and it is there suggested that Thomas may have been the Thomas Marvyn who settled at Newbury, Mass., and received a. grant of land there 27 April 1648, and died at Newbury 28 Nov. 1651. But there is no proof of this identification. iii. RICHARD (LVY6-725), b. perhaps in 1585. He received from his father a tenement called Moye House, and lands in Great Bentley, some of which he sold to his brother Edward. There is an account of him in the English Ancestry, pp. 110 and 147, and in Descendants, pp. 25, 27, 28. He was an overseer of the parish of Great Bentley in 1616 and 1624. The date of his death is not known. He m. at Great Bentley, 1 Nov. 1610, SUSAN LoucK [Loosk ?] (9SPC-YSX). Children: 1. Richard (KHXS-DK3), bap. at Great Bentley 1 Nov. 1613. 2. John (K817-PVP), bap. at Great Bentley 22 Aug. 1616; d. there 27 Oct. 1618. 3. Child (), living in 1622, mentioned in the will of its uncle Edward (DH9V-RL4). 4. Child (), living in 1622, mentioned in the will of its uncle Edward (DH9V-RL4). iv. ROBERT (LVY6-WQK), b. perhaps in 1587. He received from his father lands in the parish of Frating, co. Essex, but he evidently lived at Great Bentley. He is mentioned in the English Ancestry, pp. 111 and 147-148, and in Descendants, pp. 25 and 28. He in. at Great Bentley 7 Nov. 1616, Susan Gore (27SR-V75). Child: 1. Robert (9Q7D-MY2), bap. at Great Bentley 14 Jan. 1618/9. It is suggested in the English Ancestry, pp. 148 and 168171, that this Robert Marvin (9Q7D-MY2) may have settled at Southampton, L. I., in May 1649, and founded the Marvin family of that place. There is, however, no proof of connection. v. MARGARET (L222-HLX), b. perhaps in 1589; bur. at Great Bentley 28 Jan. 1595/6. vi. MARY (MPX3-LVX), b. perhaps in 1591; m. (1) at Great Bentley 19 April 1610 JOHN HAYSE (LK7N-PZM), of Great Bentley, who was executor of the will of his father-in-law, Edward Marvin (L9C6-MZJ), in 1615, and overseer of the parish of Great Bentley in 1616. John Hayse [Hays, Hayes] was buried at Great Bentley 5 Oct. 1616. Mary (Marvin) Hayse m. (2) at Great Bentley 8 Dec. 1618 RICHARD WOOD (9SPC-Y41). Child by first marriage (surname Hayse): 1. Mary (LZ8Y-GYK), bap. at Great Bentley 22 March 1610/1. vii. JOHN (LVY6-4GQ), bap. at Great Bentley 7 June 1593; bur. there 8 June 1593 viii. REINOLD (LLWT-JFQ), bap. at Great Bentley 7 June 1593; bur. there 8 June 1593. ix. REINOLD, RENOLD, RENALD, RENALL, (KD9Y-H6H) etc., bap. at Great Bentley 25 Oct. 1594. He - received from his father lands called Moysses, in the parish of Great Oakley, but he lived in Great Bentley, and was overseer of the latter parish in 1625 and 1637, and churchwarden in 1627, 1633 and 1634. He was taxed for ship-money at Great Bentley in 1636. He migrated to New England late in 1637 or early in 1638, and was in Hartford, Conn., with his younger brother Matthew (L222-HLX), in 1638. He seems to have removed to Farmington in 1639-40, and afterwards to Saybrook, where he was made a freeman 20 May 1658. Still later, he removed to that part of Saybrook which later became Lyme, Conn., and there he d. in the summer of 1662. He m. in 1617 or 1618 MARY (L5Z6-KX9), who (1. in that part of Saybrook which later became Lyme in the summer of 1661. Her death was attributed to witchcraft on the part of Nicholas Jennings () of Saybrook and his wife Margaret. Reinold and Mary Marvin had nine children. There is a. detailed account of this family in Descendants, pp. 26 and 29-35. x. ELIZABETH (LVY6-ZDX), b. perhaps in 1597; m. at Great Bentley 22. May 1618 ROBERT EDWARDS (LZ28-DVP). xi. MATTHEW (9WFC-R9G), bap. at Great Bentley 26 March 1600. He received from his father the mansion house called “Edons alias Dreybrockes,” which had been Edward Marvin’s dwelling-ho-use. He was a “sydeman” of the parish of Great Bentley in 1621, overseer in 1627, and senior warden in 1628. He was still in Great Bentley in Aug. 1633. He and his family sailed for New England on the Increase from London in April 1635, and they apparently landed early in June. Matthew Marvin seems to have been among the very earliest settlers of Hartford, Conn., who arrived there in November 1635. He owned land at Farmington, and may have lived there a short time. He was at Norwalk in 1651, and there he presumably died. His will was dated 26 Dec. 1678, and the inventory of his estate was taken 13 July 1680, so he died between those dates. He m. (1) by 1622 ELIZABETH-— (LZL1-H28), b. ca. 1604; d. ca. 1642. He m. (2) ca. 1647 ALICE ( ) BOUTON (LKH9-WBH), widow of John Bouton (9KZ5-CRD). She was b. ca. 1610, and d. between 17 Dec. 1680 and 9 Jan. 1680/1. Matthew Marvin had at least seven children by his first marriage, and two by his second. Accounts of this family are in Descendants, pp. 287-298, and Donald Lines Jacobus, Families of Old Fairfield, vol. 1, pp. 402-403. The best biography of Matthew Marvin is in Mary Walton Ferris, Dawes—Gates Ancestral Lines, vol. 2 (Gates and Allied Families) (Chicago, 1931), pp. 575-578. .

She came to New England with Matthew Marvin and his wife Elizabeth in 1635. She probably died young. She is not mentioned in her father's will. April, 1712, in Norwalk; will dated 1 April, 1712. * The first and third of the name were then dead, and the second was upwards of 80; this drawing probably refers to some of the undivided lands in that part of the town in which the first Matthew had an interest. ** See Benedicts in America, 365. *** An engraving of his gravestone is given in Reports of Fairfield Historical Society (see p. xv, No. 96), on which his name is spelled Hanes, and on his wife's gravestone (No. 91) her name is given as Mary, by the same authority, which is an error either of the stone-cutter or the copyist. Various deeds show Mary m. Daniel Benedict. By his first wife he had two daus. 302 Matthew Marvin Line He was selectman in 1698. 15 May, 1705, the town awarded him 93 acres on " Haynes Ridge; " he also owned land in the lower part of the town, which he bequeathed to his daughter Mary (MJLX-55B), if she should live to be 18; at the death of her father she chose her uncle, Samuel Marvin (K8R1-8L8), as her guardian, who qualified 4 June, 1712, giving a bond of £500; he had been made executor by the will of William, who calls him his " brother." John (LZLT-X2P), b, 2 Sept., 1678.** * His gravestone in the Norwalk cemetery is No. 207 1/2, in " Reports " cited. ** The dates of birth, with two exceptions, are conjectural; those of Mary and Sarah are inferred from the dates of birth of their eldest children. Possibly there were others whose names have not been found, some of whom died young, for it appears from the "List of the Children in Town," taken about 1672, that Matthew then had six children living. " Thomas Marvin," named by Selleck, is shown by various records in Norwalk and Fairfield to have been a Thomas Merwin. Samuel is said by Selleck, in his "Centenary of St. Paul's Church" (1886, p. 40, note), to have been the youngest son, but this we have no doubt is an error. - LifeSketch: Matthew has a detailed write-up in The Great Migration (see attached under Sources). Matthew came to New England in 1635 aboard The Increase. Matthew lived first in Hartford but removed to Norwalk in the Connecticut Colony in 1651. Several of Matthew and Elizabeth's children were born in England, including: 1. Elizabeth 2. Matthew 3. Mary 4. Sarah 5. Hannah and a couple of the youngest were born in Connecticut, including: *6. Abigail 7. Rebecca Elizabeth's maiden name is unknown. She is frequently confused with Elizabeth Gregory (1604-1681) who married Richard Webb. After the death of Elizabeth, Matthew married Alice, the widow of John Bouton before 1647, and they had additional children together: 8. Samuel 9. Rachel Matthew left a will dated 26 December 1678. Said will mentions his second wife Alice, son Matthew, grandson Matthew, son Samuel Smith, son John Bowton and daughter Abigail his wife, grandchild Richard Bushnell, Francis Bushnel, and his four daughters Mary Adgate, Hanna Semer, Abigail Bowton (again), and Rebecca Clarke. The book, Descendants of Reinold and Matthew Marvin of Hartford, Ct., 1638 and 1635, sons of Edward Marvin, of Great Bentley, England (see attached under Sources), has a good indexing of Matthew's will and his second wife's will. https://www.foundersofhartford.org/the-founders/matthew-marvin/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Marvin_Sr.
