- LifeSketch: Adam seems certain to fit into our Gregory tree somewhere, but the question is where. He died in or near Deane, Lancashire in 1613 which is consistent with the area where the Gregorys of Highhurst lived. The progenitor of the Gregory's was the Adam who married an Ormeston (Gregory-Ormeston coat of arms) and was the owner of Highhurst estate in Lancashire. Although that was over 200 years before this Adam died, it seems likely that his name would have been carried down for many generations. However, with only a death date and date place, it is impossible to determine his birth date or his parents. The burial record is hard to read but does not seem to indicate a 1552 birth for him -- Each line of the 1613 record book seems to be for a separate person, and simply records vital events in chronological order, with christenings, marriages and burials combined in this single book. -- The records seem to use a lot of abbreviations and a lot of Latin. (see record under "memories").

- LifeSketch: Folks! When this PID was orignally created 9 years ago, it was orignal Elizabeth wife of Matthew Marvin. Stephen Draper is going throught a whole lot of work getting this PID back to her. LH7F-3VF belongs to Elizabeth wife of Matthew Marvin. In a like manor, LZL1-H28 is the earliest know Elizabeth Gregory. Please do not associated this PID LZL1-H28 to anything Marvin related. Thanks, LeEric Marvin Elizabeth was the first wife of Matthew Marvin. No documents have been found to establish her parentage. Together they had children named Elizabeth, Matthew, Marie, Sarah, Hannah, Abigail, and Rebecca. This Elizabeth is often confused with Elizabeth Gregory who was the daughter of Henry Gregory and the second wife of Richard Webb.
- LifeSketch: Elizabeth Gregory was the daughter of Henry Gregory with siblings John, Judah, Persis, Elishaphat, Anne, Triphose, William, and Abigail. Elizabeth married first Seth Grant and together they had 3 children named Sarah, Elizabeth, and Seth Jr. After her first husband Seth died in 1647 she married Richard Webb as his second wife. They had no children together. Both of her husbands knew each other as proprietors and founders of Hartford, Connecticut. There are two Elizabeths in CT who married two Richard Webbs, both of whom died in Norwalk, CT. Note that many genealogists were understandably confused and mixed them up, even in print even within the same volume (see "Norwalk" excerpt document under "memories") From Grant Gregory's book: "ELIZABETH, d. 24 Jan. 1680/81; m. Richard Webb, a surveyor He may have been the Richard Webb of Wayland, co. Suffolk, who, 1630, came in Winthrop's fleet, with wife Elizabeth; settled in Cambridge, where he, 1632, was made freeman. He moved to Hartford abt. 1636. He and others, 1650, agreed with Ludlow for the settlement of Norwalk, Ct., in which, 1655, he was townsman. In East Norwalk the New Haven R. R. station stands (1933) on what was his home lot. He d. July 1665; Elizabeth was admx.; the estate, L234-08-06, was ordered dist. to wid. and (L10) to Sarah, dau. of Rev. Samuel Stone of Hartford, whom Richard had brought up, till she m. Thomas Butler of Hartford." "Elizabeth, in 1677, employed "her beloved brother, John Gregory, to make an agreement" with the Butlers, they "laying claim to the estate of her husband Richard Webb." On Apr. 8, 1669, Elizabeth conveyed to her brother John (with the consent of the Butlers) all her estate, he to maintain her the rest of her life. John was her adm., when 14 Mar. 1681/82, the court ordered L20 given to. Richard Holmes, a Norwalk gunsmith, because of his wife's relationship to Elizabeth. She was Sarah and spoke of Webb as father. It seems that Sarah m. twice. Money went to Bartholomew Barnard "by virtue of the right of his wife, her father, Birchard, having right to both deceased, Elizabeth Webb and her husband Richard." Savage calls him Thomas Birchard and the daughter, Sarah. In 1709 was granted a grist mill privilege to Joseph Birchard (perhaps related to Thos.) and John Gregory, grandnephew of Elizabeth."

- Father: Henry GREGORY
- Mother: Mary Abigail GOODY
- Birth: ABT 1623, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England
- Also known as: Elizaphat Gregory
- Elishaphat is a male name: ELISHAPHAT ĭ lĭsh’ ə făt (אֱלִישָׁפָ֥ט, God has judged). One of five captains of hundreds who helped Jehoiada the priest in the overthrow of Athaliah to make Joash king (2 Chron 23:1).
- LifeSketch: Elishaphat Gregory was the son of Henry Gregory and his wife of Nottingham, England and his siblings were Elizabeth, John, Judah, Persis, William, Abigail, Anne and Triphosa. Very little else is known of Elishaphat -- only two records have been found for him (as of 2021) -- a 1635 apprenticeship record in London and a 1641 mention in a postscript to a will in Windsor CT. The first record, only discovered with digitization in the 21st century, confirms Henry had a son Elishaphat who apprenticed as a blacksmith and the second confirms he emigrated to New England (probably with the family probably circa 1636). Elishaphat's father Henry was a shoemaker, and trained his two sons John and Judah as shoemakers, but he sent his son Elishaphat to London, over 100 miles away, to learn blacksmithing (see 1635 apprentice record under "memories" documents). This record is confusing as the Gregory family is said to have emigrated in either 1633 or 1636, so this perhaps is an early termination of an apprenticeship which usually ran 5-9 years. Perhaps the original contract, if still extant, would shed light on both the immigration issue and Elishaphat's birthyear (most apprenticeships start about age 14). No documents have been found to indicate whether Elishaphat ever married or had children. It is unknown where and when he died. However, his entry in Grant Gregory's 1938 book while sparse (as Grant Gregory only mentioned the 1641 record) includes Grant Gregory's inference that Elishaphat was still alive upon his father's death in 1655 -- Henry specified John as his "eldest living son", and since Judah and William were deceased, this implies Elishaphat was still alive. Some have thought his name a misspelling for Elizabeth and that Elishaphat/Elizaphatt was a woman; his two records clearly refute this: his 1635 apprenticeship record calls him the son of Henry and in the 1641 will record he is referred to twice in the masculine ("hee" and "him"). It seems likely the 1635 apprentice record spelling of "Elishaphat" is probably the "correct" one -- ELISHAPHAT, meaning God has judged, was one of five captains of hundreds who helped Jehoiada the priest in the overthrow of Athaliah to make Joash king.

- The most definitive compilation of sources on the Gregory ancestry is Grant Gregory's 1938 book compiling all American and English records.: "Ancestors and Descendants of HENRY Gregory" by Grant Gregory 1938, pages 22 to 29 and 3 (see extrcted pages under "memories" - in public domaibn*)
- LifeSketch: The only documentation of Henry's wife's given name is MARGARET from the 1632 Bishop Transcript record of Abigail's birth (see documents under "memories"). The Bishop Transcripts of 1598-1837 were duplicates of the local parish books, both made by the local parish priests.* Apparently the genealogists of the 19th and 20th centuries did not look for or at least find this record, which was found only in the 21st century when all the records were digitized and indexed. All this record states is that Henry was married to Margaret in 1632. Abigail was the last child of Henry. No documentation exists regarding the mother of the previous 8 children; it is assumed that Margaret was the most or several if not all of them. Henry had NINE children all born in Nottingham (circa 1610-1632): Elizabeth, John, Elishaphat/Elizaphatt (male), Judah, Perry/Perrie/Perris (female), Anne, and the last three who died young: Triphosa, William, and Abigail. (See Grant Gregory's 1938 book "Ancestors and Descendants of Henry Gregory" under "memories"). No other children should be added without sources. (It is expected he might have had more children who died young without parish records -- such as a son Henry and a daughter Margaret.) Extracted from Grant Gregory's 1938 "Ancestors and Descendants of Henry Gregory": "Henry Gregory probably was born between 1590 and 1595. I found no authority for 1570 as his birth year, which often has appeared in print in America. ... The earliest record I found of any of Henry's children was this one in "Christenings" in the registers of St. Peter's Parish, Nottingham: "1625. Anne ye daughter of Henry Gregory the 29 of January." This means 1625-6, and I believe gives us the birth year of our Henry's daughter Anne who was married to William Crooker and lived in Stratford, Ct., and on Long Island. Others of Henry's children christened in St. Peter's were Triphosa, William and Abigail, all of whom died young. Note the Puritan names of the girls. William, "son of Henry Gregory," was buried Aug. 6, 1635. I found no later date connected with Henry in England, so it seems likely that he sailed for Boston late in that year or in 1636 -- not in 1633 as often written. William and Anne were probably named for Henry's rich brother and sister-in-law, William and Anne. St. Peter's, the church in which our forebear's offspring were baptised, still stands. ... He presumably had a brief residence in or near Boston, perhaps in Roxbury, Pynchon's town. ... The earliest record mention I found of him in North America is: "January 16th, 1638. It is ordered that the three rod of grownd yt (that) lyes betwixt John Woodcock's pale (fence) and Goodman Grigorys Lott shall be appropriated 2 rod of it to Goodman Grigory and one rod of it to Rich: Everit reserving 40 rod for a place for a meeting howse wch is to be alowed out of Goodman Grigorys Lott." ... It is probable that Henry went to Springfield (then called Agawam) Massachusetts many months before that -- perhaps in 1636, the year of its settlement, since he seemingly had an original grant of land -- grants of land were made to settlers with the understadning that if they did not remain five years they forfeited their holdings. On Mar. 14, 1642-3 the town decided to buy Henry's land, so his arrival at least as early as Mar. 1637-8 is indicated. ... The frequent early spelling Grigory shows that our ancestors then pronounced their name with a short i sound for the e. ... Henry's homelot contained about five acres, less 40 sq. rods for the church. As did each proprietor, he owned opposite his lot -- across Town St. -- land of the same frontage (10 rods) that ran northeasterly through a hassocky marsh and up a wooded ridge to the present School St. It contained 2 acres of marsh, 4 acres of wood lot. His house was of "attle and daub" or weather boarding (not logs) and was thatched. His chimney was of clay-daubed timber. ... When the red man was not furnishing excitement for out Puritan ancestors they sought diversion in law suits. Henry was a litigious as the average He often was in court as plaintiff, defendant or juror -- June 16, 1640, over pigs, same day over pumpkins, Sep 10, 1640 over pigs and hogs, Dec 1640 for slander, he and wife were witnesses in Feb 1641, same day Mrs Gregory fined 12s for swearing before God, Dec 24 1640 sold or pawned canoes. ... That Mrs. Gregory died between Feb 15, 1640-4 and Jan 5, 1641-42 is shown by the granting to Henry on the latter date of 8 rods in breadth of land in the second division of planting ground. It had been decided to give 8 rods to sinle men and 10 rods to married men. We can only guess from names of descendants that she was an Abigail, Phebe, Elizabeth or Hannah. ... Henry decided to move to southern Connecticut apparently to live near or with his son John or his daughters Elizabeth and Anne. .. Mar 14, 1643 record: "Henry Gregory beinge purposed to sell his lott and ppoundinge it to ye Plantation by his sonne Judah accordinge to order ... the estimation of Goodman Grigoris lot the 3rd of Aprill as follows: 3 acres broaken up - £3, 11 rod fencing at 2s 6d - £1-7-6, 29 rod fencing at 14d - £p;1-14, ye house - £3-00, total - £9-01-6." ... The next four or five years of Henry's life are shrouded in mystery, chiefly because in 1650 the records of Stratford, Ct., were burned. It seems likely that he lived in New Haven Ct -- perhaps with his son John -- before moving to Stratford, where he resided in 1647, and till his death. ... Henry, his sons John and Judah, and many descendants for seven generations were makers of shoes -- predecessors of the present shoe manufacturers whose machinery has suceeded the hand. Some of them tanned their own leather. ... 1651 and 1652 in Stratford there were land records for Henry, ones that indicate that Henry had livestock, and perhap was somewhat favored because of his advancing years. Henry Gregory died probably in 1655, because under date of June 19 that year of the Fairfield Probate Records is "The Court orders that the estate of Henery Gregory shall be distributed as followeth: the debts shall be payd, then the remainder shall be distributed to his children, only the eldest sonn liveing shall have a dubble portion and he the said eldest sonn being John Gregory is apoynted to Administer the estate acording to the above distribution. William Hill, Secretary." Preceding this order on the same page is the inventory of Henry's personal estate (see sources for more information on his estate). * This is highly questionable because the original record from which the Bishop did the transcript is not available -- this is the opinion of one genealogist and not the main-stream opinion. Beginning in 1598, every parish priest of the Church of England was supposed to make a copy of his parish register and send it to the archdeacon or bishop every year. So both the parish records and the bishops transcripts were made by the local parish priest, supposedly simultaneously, but in reality the Bishop Transcripts could have been made later but within the calendar year. The Bishop Transcripts and parish records should be examined together as one may have more information than the other (such as in this case the Bishop Transcript mentions Abigail's mother's name while the parish record does not). The difference between the two records is mainly where they were stored -- one locally and one centrally. In summary, Bishop Transcript records are duplicates of the local parish book records, written by the local parish priest, but sent to the archdeacon's or bishop's office while the parish records kept by the same local parish priest were kept at the parish (see https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/England_Bishop%27s_Transcripts_-_FamilySearch_Historical_Records).

- Miscellaneous: ABT 1502, Highhurst, Lancashire, England
- Fact: Was a feudal subordinate of the Tyldesley family
- Land: Owned Land
- LifeSketch: All sources agree that Hugh was a second son, brother to heir John of Highhurst. However, the 1623 pedigree differs from the 1567 one. The 1567 pedigree, probably during Hugh's lifetime, specified his father as William married to Dorothy Parre. The 1623 pedigree specifies that William's father was the heir John who was married to Dorothy Parre; this information was probably provided by John's great-grandson. It seems that a mistake of misinformation/mistranscription would be less likely in the less-detailed earlier pedigree supplied by the son of Dorothy Parre than in the more-detailed pedigree 56 years later by her great-grandson. This contradiction has not been fully resolved, and it is why some have Hugh's father as John instead of William, or sometimes specify his father's name as William John or John William. From Grant Gregory's 1938 book :Hugh Gregory (16th century), born circa 1500 -- nothing is known further than the information contained in the Gregory pedigrees, all of which call him a second son; two say son of William. He married Mary and had a son Thomas. He may have lived in Urmston, and may have moved to Nottinghamshire.

- LifeSketch: The surname Gregory is spelled several ways. Griggorie, Gregorie, and Greegorie. All spellings were sound spellings of the time. With education came the modern spelling Gregory. (Ingrid676) From Grant Gregory's 1938 book: John Gregory was born probably in Nottinghamshire about 1612 to 1615. He married Sarah*. At the settlement of his father's estate he was called the eldest "living" son. This implies an older brother, dead. Judah was dead, but the date of Judah's marriage makes it likely that he was younger than John. Perhaps John did not go with his father to Springfield, Mass. He may have been the John Gregory who was a proprietor in Duxbury, Mass., in 1638. The Plymouth County Records, Vol I and II say "John Gregory is graunted six acres of land at West end of the New Field, and the next garden place above Robert Paddock." This date is Jan 7, 1838/39. A Plymouth deed dated Oct 26, 1640 adds that Andrew Ringe bought from Matthew ffuller the garden place in Plymouth and six acres in the New Field which Matthew had lately bought of John Gregory. New Field seems to have been in what is now the town of Barnstable. ... The earliest mention of John, son of Henry Gregory, is the following from the New Haven Colony records: "At a General Court held at New Haven 24 of ffeb 1644 (1644/45) Jer. Whinill, Thomas James, Robert Martin, John Gregory and John Meggs were admitted members of the Court." This means that they became free burgesses and were church members. That John had not long been in town is indicated by the absence of his name from a list of those who took the oath of fidelity July 1 preceding. He was a shoe manufacturer, tanner and sealer of leather ... May 35, 1646, June 6, 1848, Jan 31, 1647/48 - court appearances about shoemaking. ... John lived in the Yorkshire quarter of New Haven which was northerly from where the old Yale buildings now are. There had had a cottage and six acres, acquired probably from John Evance ... Mar 2, 1646/47. The "seatings in the meeting house" of March 10 1646/47 show that John was in the 8th seat on the men's side and S. (Sarah) Gregory on the 8th seat on the women's side. ... In that church were christened two of John's sons -- Joseph July 26, 1646 and Thomas, March 19, 1648/49. ... On Jan 8 1648/49 ... complaints about fences gone, mentioning John Gregory and four others. John sold his house and six acres to Thomas Wheeler ... June 6, 1654. Between his New Haven and Norwalk, Ct. residences, John Gregory lived in his father's town, Stratford, Ct. ... land record of 1653. ... The double homelot of John Gregory was on the west side of Main St., between South Ave., and Birdsey St. The home of P. G. Darling in 1931 stood on it. It was opposite a lot on which William Crooker, John's brother-in-law, lived. Probably his sister Elizabeth, and her husband Richard Webb, induced John to join in the "planting" of Norwalk, Ct**. ... We first learn of the presence there of John Gregory from the record of a town meeting held Apr 24, 1654 ... As his home lot was "No 1" and four acres of it was an original grant to him there seems little doubt that his was one of the earliest families that planted the town -- in 1651. John in Norwalk held office almost continuously -- 1660 voted "constubull", 1657 townsman, 1665-66 1669 selectman, 1659 1662-3 1665 1667-72 1674-5 1677 1679-81 deputy of Colonial Court (legislature), 1659 cow herder, 1674 sealer of leather. John Gregory took a leading part in the movement that resulted in the founding of Newark NJ intending to live there ... John acquired numerous parcels of land including Gregory's Point, which extended into the harbor, southerly from his home. It was later, for many years, called Dorlon's Point, but now the original name again is used. It is owned by the Norwalk Country Club. ... The early church records of Norwalk were destroyed by rats; so we do not know much about John's religious activities. ... Next to the deacon's pew the most important place was the round seat. John and seven others occupied that, showing he was a cheerful giver. (See the Norwalk records that remain, mostly from town meetings.) In the year of his death, 1689, John gave to his five sons most of his lands by deed. One parcel to Thomas and Jachin was "to equalize them with" John and Joseph. He "sot" his hand to his will Aug 15, 1689, making a big shaky J. Earlier he had signed his name. His books valued at nearly £5 do not indicate illiteracy. He left all his cattle, chattels and movable goods in house and shop to his wife Sarah "to be hers to dispose of after my death according to her own will and discretion among the children." He gave her his book of accounts and what bills of debt were owing him, also all lands not disposed of by deeds of gift. The remaining land was to be sold and the proceeds given to the two daughters. James Benedict was to have as much as John Benedict, to whom had been deeded land. They were sons-in-law. This trust imposed in his wife indicates that she was the mother of all the children. The will was acknowledged Aug 21; presented for probate by the widow Oct 9, 1689. That latter day she signed with a mark her own short will. "I, Sarah Gregory, widow of John of Norwalk, do choose my beloved friends Mr. Thomas Hanford (the minister) and Sergt. John Plat to distribute to my children according to instruction and directions I have left in their hand as to pertickular movables." As to the rest they had full power. John Fitch and James Betts were witnesses. Nov 1 1689, the sons John, "Jakin," Judah, Joseph and Thomas, and John and James "Benedick," signed an agreement and declared themselves satisfied with the "bequeathment" of their mother. The Benedict boys received the seven and a half acres of Gregory's Point. The inventory of Sarah's estate was taken 28 Oct 1689, by John Platt, sr. and Chris. Comstock. ------- * perhaps surname St. John? (unproven -- note that while several Gregory genealogists list Sarah's maiden name as St. John, this is disputed by St. John genealogists who find no possible record for her.) ** Sarah's father may well have been one of the Matthew/Matthias Sention names on the same monument (a variation of the St. John spelling). Note that "eldest living son" can have two implications -- the one Grant Gregory mentions that John had an older brother that predeceased him (e.g. Judah or maybe even a Henry after his father?) but also that John has a living brother (e.g., Elishaphatt) or John would just be called my only living son.

"John Gregory, son of Thomas and Dorothy, married Alice, who may have been a Baylye. He is called 'of Broughton Sulney,' more likely in his day to mean the manor than the township. I believe they were the John and Alice Gregory who, Aug 9, 1588 in Trafford, Lancs., signed papers transferring for £40, to Ralph Sorrocolde their interest in the same Tyldesley (Highhurst?) and Worsley lands and houses that John jr., Gilbert and Richard Gregory had conveyed a year and a day earlier. This delay perhaps was due to the distance between our John's Over Broughton home and Trafford. To make Sorrocolde's title good this couple had to sign, as John was a "remainder man," meaning that after the deaths of his three cousins and their direct heirs he would have succeeded to these entailed lands. It was Sir Edmund, or his ancestor, who had bought the Urmston lands on which Thomas and John Gregory were tenants. The registers of St. Luke's church, Upper Broughton, go back only to 1571. The rector examined them (in 1923) for this book. He reported finding no reference to Thomas or Henry, and just one to John, as follows: 'Wynefret Gregorie, daughter to John Gregorie, was buried Dec. 20, Anno Dom. 1614.'" -- Grant Gregory 1938 "Ancestors and Descendants of Henry Gregory" (Note his book includes the 1675 pedigree; he and his professional English genealogists were well aware of the pedigree) These two errors (Alton and Brightman surnames) have been published extensively (even by the Institute of Family Research) and seem to be based on misreadings of Gregory ancestral pedigree charts (specifically the excerpted 1938 one in Grant Gregory's book with lack of clarifying spacing, only slightly better in the 1675 original pedigree tree, both under "memories"). John's wife has been erroneously identified as Elizabeth Brightman, 18 years his senior, and his correct wife Alice has been widely designated as an Alton due to misinterpretation of the tree. John Alton and his wife Elizabeth Brightman are just to the right of Alicia as they were contemporaries -- they are on the Gregory pedigree because their granddaughter Elizabeth Alton married John Gregory the grandson of John and Alice Gregory (see charts under "memories" for more). It was desired to quarter the Gregory Coat of Arms to include the Alton/Kyme lines. There is no "fil" (daughter of) after John wife's Alicia's name -- her father is unknown on this chart, made in the 17th century, and despite Grant Gregory's extensive research in the 20th century still has not been discovered; it is possible that as more records are digitized in the 21st century some new records might be found to shed some light on this. Note that if this John had also married a prominent Alton, it would have been remembered just two or three generations later and would have been entered on the chart. Errors were fixed and merges were made, ensuring no loss of data, but with any duplicate entries deleted. Finally sources were added and summarized/described.
