Somerset County, England SirEdwardHungerfordBustHungerfordMarket Farleigh Hungerford Castle A north view of Farleigh Castle in 1733 from an engraving by Samuel and Nathaniel Buck. The beginning of its decay is evident in the two towers on the right of the picture. • Farleigh Castle stood four miles west of Trowbridge and was situated on a ledge of terrace of a rocky eminence at the foot of which ran the river Frome. Henry Bayntun purchased the castle in 1686 from the Hungerford family and resided there for a few years prior to this death in 1691. Farleigh Hungerford Castle was built sometime between 1370 and 1380 by Sir Thomas Hungerford, of Heytesbury – the first Speaker of the House of Commons (c1377). His family and their descendants continued to live here for nearly 300 years and were much connected with Wiltshire. They were one of the richest families in England for many years and owned land from Farleigh to as far as Salisbury. Sir Thomas Hungerford served as Steward of the Household of John of Gaunt and Bailiff for the Bishop of Salisbury. He bought Farleigh Monford House in Somerset in 1369 and transformed it into Farleigh Hungerford Castle. He was knighted in 1377 and became Speaker of "The Bad Parliament" through the patronage of his friend John of Gaunt, the First Duke of Lancaster. He was also Sheriff of Wiltshire (1355 - 1360). At that time, Farleigh Castle comprised of four lofty towers, 60 feet high, and two embattled gatehouses as part of its fortifications with high embattled walls and a moat and a drawbridge thrown across it. It was a strong fortress, set on a steep hill, with a stream at the rear. But Sir Thomas had neglected to procure the Royal Licence to execute these works and was obliged to pay a fine of 1000 Marks to King Richard II as a conditional pardon. He was married to Joan Hussey, the daughter and co-heiress of Sir Edmund Hussey of Holbrook and died on the 3rd December 1398. Sir Thomas was buried in the Chapel of St. Anne, the parish chapel outside the castle. His wife, Joan, died on the 1st March 1412 and was buried beside him. He was succeeded by his son, Sir Walter. This Sir Walter Hungerford was known as the First Lord Hungerford. His principal residence was Heytesbury and he was married to Catherine Peverill, the daughter and heiress of Thomas Peverill. He was Lord High Treasurer of England (1426 - 1432) and First Lord Sheriff of Somerset and Dorset. He was also Sheriff of Wiltshire (1404 - 1407). Like his father, he was also Speaker of the House of Commons and in 1426 was admitted to the House of Lords as Baron Hungerford. He distinguished himself in the French wars of Henry V, especially at Calais, and was rewarded for his services by a grant of 100 Marks per annum, payable out of the town and Castle of Marlborough. He fought at Agincourt and at the Siege of Rouen and was the Executor of Henry V's will and a Member of Council under Henry VI. In his time at Farleigh he greatly enlarged the outer court of Farleigh Castle, enclosing the parish church. When he died on the 9th August 1449 he was succeeded by his son, Robert. Robert Hungerford was the 2nd Baron Hungerford and was married to Margaret Botreaux, the daughter of William Botreaux of the ancient Cornish family of that name. Like his father, he was a staunch supporter of the House of Lancaster and befitted the descendant of a Steward of John of Gaunt and proudly wore the collar of SSs of that House. He was taken prisoner after the battle of Hexham and later beheaded on the 18th May 1459. He was buried in the Hungerford Chapel in Salisbury Cathedral and was succeeded by his son, who was also called Robert. This Robert Hungerford was known as Baron Hungerford and Lord Moleyns by right of his wife. He was married to Eleanor, the daughter of William Lord Moleyns. While fighting abroad he was captured at Castillon in 1453 – the very last battle of the Hundred Years' War – and imprisoned for seven years in France. When he returned to England, he joined the Lancastrian army in the Wars of the Roses (1455 - 1485), but was again taken prisoner at the Battle of Hexham in 1464 and was attained. As a result, by a Bill of Attainer, King Edward IV declared Robert Hungerford guilty of treason, and without the inconvenience of any trial, his estates were forfeited to the Crown and he was beheaded in 1464 for his support of the Lancastrian cause. His body was laid to rest in Salisbury Cathedral. His eldest son, Thomas Hungerford, supported Edward IV but afterwards falling off, and endeavouring the restoration of King Henry VI, he was seized on and tried for his life at Salisbury, where he was judged a traitor and beheaded in 1469. For almost 20 years Farleigh was crown property. Then in 1483 King Edward granted Farleigh Castle to his brother, Richard, the Duke of Gloucester – later King Richard III, who in turn, granted it to John Howard, Duke of Norfolk. However when King Richard was defeated by Henry VII at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485, John Howard lost his life at the same battle. Sir Walter Hungerford of Heytesbury and Farley, a nephew of the above mentioned Sir Robert Hungerford, the last proprietor of Farleigh, was knighted on the same battlefield by Henry VII and a year later he recovered Farleigh Castle in 1486 when the King gave it back to the Hungerford family. He had been an Esquire of the Body of Edward IV and had served under him in France in 1475, appointed Lieutenant of Dover Castle in 1472 and Sheriff of Wiltshire in 1510 and served as a Privy Councillor. He was married to Jane Bulstrode, the daughter of William Bulstrode and when he died in 1516 he was buried in Farleigh Castle and was succeeded by his son, Sir Edward. This Sir Edward Hungerford was Sheriff of Wiltshire in 1517 and was married three times. When he died, just six years after his father in 1522, he left his estate to his widow, Agnes, but she was arrested and hanged at Tyburn in 1523 on a charge of arranging the murder of her previous husband, John Cotell, after she strangled him and burnt his remains in the kitchen furnace. Sir Edward was succeeded by his son, Walter. Like his father, Walter Hungerford was married three times. His first wife was Susan Danvers, the sister of Lucy Danvers who was married to Sir Henry Bayntun of Bromham House, Wiltshire and the daughter of Sir John Danvers, of Dauntsey, Wiltshire. After the death of his first wife he married Alice Sandys, the daughter of William, Lord Sandys in 1527 but she was accused of poisoning her husband some years later and hanged, along with one of her servants. In 1533 he was remarried, for the third time, to Elizabeth, the daughter of John Lord Hussey and in the same year he was made Sheriff of Wiltshire. He is said to have abused Elizabeth terribly and he imprisoned her for more than three years in the south-west tower of the castle, with little to eat or drink, allowing her to see no one but his chaplain. This tower is still standing and since then has been known as 'The Lady Tower'. Upon her release from imprisonment in 1536 she was driven to appeal to Thomas Cromwell for protection, fearing she might be locked up again and claimed he had tried to poison her on a number of occasions. Cromwell however ignored her plea, seeking to protect her husband who was his friend. In fact Cromwell suggested he be rewarded and the same year Sir Walter was made Lord Hungerford of Heytesbury, with the right to sit in the House of Lords and a 'Squire of the Body' to Henry VIII. But his favour at Court did not last long and he was charged with treason in 1540. The same year his friend Oliver Cromwell also fell from power and they were both beheaded on Tower Hill, the same day, on the 28th July 1540. He therefore lost his Manors in Chippenham, Sheldon and Lowdon and a very considerable number of good Wiltshire manors elsewhere – not to mention Farleigh Castle. As a result, and for the second time, Farleigh Castle passed to the King and the lands were passed onto Sir Thomas Seymour. However Seymour was also beheaded for treason in 1549 and in 1554 Queen Mary restored Farleigh back to Walter's eldest son, Sir Walter Hungerford, later called 'The Knight of Farleigh'. The main entrance to the castle (pictured left) as it stands today. This Sir Walter Hungerford was Sheriff of Wiltshire (1557, 1572, 1581 and 1587). He was married to Anne Bassett but later remarried Anne Dormer, the daughter of Sir William Dormer. He accused his second wife of adultry and attempted poisoning her, however the charges were dismissed. But rather than pay the legal fees, he went to prison instead. He died in 1596.

- LifeSketch: Attila, frequently called Attila the Hun, was the ruler of the Huns from 434 until his death in March 453. He was also the leader of a tribal empire consisting of Huns, Ostrogoths, and Alans, among others, in Central and Eastern Europe. During his reign, he was one of the most feared enemies of the Western and Eastern Roman Empires. He crossed the Danube twice and plundered the Balkans, but was unable to take Constantinople. His unsuccessful campaign in Persia was followed in 441 by an invasion of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire, the success of which emboldened him to invade the West. He also attempted to conquer Roman Gaul (modern France), crossing the Rhine in 451 and marching as far as Aurelianum (Orléans) before being stopped in the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains. He subsequently invaded Italy, devastating the northern provinces, but was unable to take Rome. He planned for further campaigns against the Romans, but died in 453. After his death, his close adviser, Ardaric of the Gepids, led a Germanic revolt against Hunnic rule, after which the Hunnic Empire quickly collapsed. There is no surviving first-hand account of Attila's appearance, but there is a possible second-hand source provided by Jordanes, who cites a description given by Priscus: "He was a man born into the world to shake the nations, the scourge of all lands, who in some way terrified all mankind by the dreadful rumors noised abroad concerning him. He was haughty in his walk, rolling his eyes hither and thither, so that the power of his proud spirit appeared in the movement of his body. He was indeed a lover of war, yet restrained in action, mighty in counsel, gracious to suppliants and lenient to those who were once received into his protection. Short of stature, with a broad chest and a large head; his eyes were small, his beard thin and sprinkled with grey; and he had a flat nose and swarthy skin, showing evidence of his origin." The historiography of Attila is faced with a major challenge, in that the only complete sources are written in Greek and Latin by the enemies of the Huns. Attila's contemporaries left many testimonials of his life, but only fragments of these remain. was a Byzantine diplomat and historian who wrote in Greek, and he was both a witness to and an actor in the story of Attila, as a member of the embassy of Theodosius II at the Hunnic court in 449. He was obviously biased by his political position, but his writing is a major source for information on the life of Attila, and he is the only person known to have recorded a physical description of him. He wrote a history of the late Roman Empire in eight books covering the period from 430 to 476. Only fragments of Priscus' work remain. It was cited extensively by 6th-century historians Procopius and Jordanes, especially in Jordanes' 'The Origin and Deeds of the Goths," which contains numerous references to Priscus's history, and it is also an important source of information about the Hunnic empire and its neighbors. He describes the legacy of Attila and the Hunnic people for a century after Attila's death. Marcellinus Comes, a chancellor of Justinian during the same era, also describes the relations between the Huns and the Eastern Roman Empire. Numerous ecclesiastical writings contain useful but scattered information, sometimes difficult to authenticate or distorted by years of hand-copying between the 6th and 17th centuries. The Hungarian writers of the 12th century wished to portray the Huns in a positive light as their glorious ancestors, and so repressed certain historical elements and added their own legends. The literature and knowledge of the Huns themselves was transmitted orally, by means of epics and chanted poems that were handed down from generation to generation. Indirectly, fragments of this oral history have reached us via the literature of the Scandinavians and Germans, neighbors of the Huns who wrote between the 9th and 13th centuries. Attila is a major character in many Medieval epics, such as the "Nibelungenlied," as well as various Eddas and sagas. Archaeological investigation has uncovered some details about the lifestyle, art, and warfare of the Huns. There are a few traces of battles and sieges, but the tomb of Attila and the location of his capital have not yet been found. The Huns were a group of Eurasian nomads, appearing from east of the Volga, who migrated further into Western Europe c. 370 and built up an enormous empire there. Their main military techniques were mounted archery and javelin throwing. They were in the process of developing settlements before their arrival in Western Europe, yet the Huns were a society of pastoral warriors whose primary form of nourishment was meat and milk, products of their herds. The origin and language of the Huns has been the subject of debate for centuries. According to some theories, their leaders at least may have spoken a Turkic language, perhaps closest to the modern Chuvash language. One scholar suggests a relationship to Yeniseian. According to the "Encyclopedia of European Peoples," "the Huns, especially those who migrated to the west, may have been a combination of central Asian Turkic, Mongolic, and Ugric stocks." Attila's father Mundzuk was the brother of kings Octar and Ruga, who reigned jointly over the Hunnic empire in the early fifth century. This form of diarchy was recurrent with the Huns, but historians are unsure whether it was institutionalized, merely customary, or an occasional occurrence. His family was from a noble lineage, but it is uncertain whether they constituted a royal dynasty. Attila's birthdate is debated; journalist Éric Deschodt and writer Herman Schreiber have proposed a date of 395. However, historian Iaroslav Lebedynsky and archaeologist Katalin Escher prefer an estimate between the 390s and the first decade of the fifth century. Several historians have proposed 406 as the date. Attila grew up in a rapidly changing world. His people were nomads who only recently had arrived in Europe. They crossed the Volga river during the 370s and annexed the territory of the Alans, then attacked the Gothic kingdom between the Carpathian mountains and the Danube. They were a very mobile people, whose mounted archers had acquired a reputation for invincibility, and the Germanic tribes seemed unable to withstand them. Vast populations fleeing the Huns moved from Germania into the Roman Empire in the west and south, and along the banks of the Rhine and Danube. In 376, the Goths crossed the Danube, initially submitting to the Romans but soon rebelling against Emperor Valens, whom they killed in the Battle of Adrianople in 378. Large numbers of Vandals, Alans, Suebi, and Burgundians crossed the Rhine and invaded Roman Gaul on December 31, 406, to escape the Huns. The Roman Empire had been split in half since 395 and was ruled by two distinct governments, one based in Ravenna in the West, and the other in Constantinople in the East. The Roman Emperors, both East and West, were generally from the Theodosian family in Attila's lifetime (despite several power struggles). The Huns dominated a vast territory with nebulous borders determined by the will of a constellation of ethnically varied peoples. Some were assimilated to Hunnic nationality, whereas many retained their own identities and rulers but acknowledged the suzerainty of the king of the Huns. The Huns were also the indirect source of many of the Romans' problems, driving various Germanic tribes into Roman territory, yet relations between the two empires were cordial: the Romans used the Huns as mercenaries against the Germans and even in their civil wars. Thus, the usurper Joannes was able to recruit thousands of Huns for his army against Valentinian III in 424. It was Aëtius, later Patrician of the West, who managed this operation. They exchanged ambassadors and hostages, the alliance lasting from 401 to 450 and permitting the Romans numerous military victories. The Huns considered the Romans to be paying them tribute, whereas the Romans preferred to view this as payment for services rendered. The Huns had become a great power by the time that Attila came of age during the reign of his uncle Ruga, to the point that Nestorius, the Patriarch of Constantinople, deplored the situation with these words: "They have become both masters and slaves of the Romans." After Attila left Italy and returned to his palace across the Danube, he planned to strike at Constantinople again and reclaim the tribute that Marcian had stopped. However, he died in the early months of 453. The conventional account from Priscus says that Attila was at a feast celebrating his latest marriage, this time to the beautiful young Ildico. In the midst of the revels, however, he suffered a severe nosebleed and choked to death in a stupor. An alternative theory is that he succumbed to internal bleeding after heavy drinking, possibly a condition called esophageal varices, where dilated veins in the lower part of the esophagus rupture leading to death by hemorrhage. Another account of his death was first recorded 80 years after the events by Roman chronicler Marcellinus Comes. It reports that "Attila, King of the Huns and ravager of the provinces of Europe, was pierced by the hand and blade of his wife." Most scholars reject these accounts as no more than hearsay, preferring instead the account given by Attila's contemporary Priscus. Priscus' version, however, recently has come under renewed scrutiny by Michael A. Babcock. Based on detailed philological analysis, Babcock concludes that the account of natural death given by Priscus was an ecclesiastical "cover story," and that Emperor Marcian (who ruled the Eastern Roman Empire from 450 to 457) was the political force behind Attila's death. -- from Wikiwand: Attila

- LifeSketch: Balamber (also known as Balamir, Balamur and many other variants) was ostensibly a chieftain of the Huns, mentioned by Jordanes in his Getica (c. 550 AD). Jordanes simply called him "king of the Huns" (Latin: rex Hunnorum) and writes the story of Balamber crushing the tribes of the Ostrogoths in the 370s; somewhere between 370 and more probably 376 AD. A number of historians argue that Balamber may have never existed, and was a confusion of other rulers or even a fabrication. Jordanes recounts: "Balamber, king of the Huns, took advantage of his ill health to move an army into the country of the Ostrogoths, from whom the Visigoths had already separated because of some dispute. Meanwhile Hermanaric, who was unable to endure either the pain of his wound or the inroads of the Huns, died full of days at the great age of one hundred and ten years. The fact of his death enabled the Huns to prevail over those Goths who, as we have said, dwelt in the East and were called Ostrogoths." "When he had ruled with such license for barely a year, Balamber, king of the Huns, would no longer endure it, but sent for Gesimund, son of Hunimund the Great. Now Gesimund, together with a great part of the Goths, remained under the rule of the Huns, being mindful of his oath of fidelity. Balamber renewed his alliance with him and led his army up against Vinitharius. After a long contest, Vinitharius prevailed in the first and in the second conflict, nor can any say how great a slaughter he made of the army of the Huns. But in the third battle, when they met each other unexpectedly at the river named Erac, Balamber shot an arrow and wounded Vinitharius in the head, so that he died. Then Balamber took to himself in marriage Vadamerca, the grand-daughter of Vinitharius, and finally ruled all the people of the Goths as his peaceful subjects, but in such a way that one ruler of their own number always held the power over the Gothic race, though subject to the Huns." Those events were preceded by the Huns' attack on the Alans at the Don River, who bordered the Greuthungi, and according to Ammianus Marcellinus, occurred an alliance between them. The events and names which followed vary according to Ammianus and Cassiodorus (from whose Gothic History was summarized Getica): Ammianus wrote that after death of Ermanaric in 375, Vithimiris became the king of the Greuthungi, he resisted the Huns and Alans, but was killed in battle and was succeeded by young son Videric, so they were ruled by duces Alatheus and Safrax. They managed to make a confederation of Greuthungi, Alans and Huns, who escaped from the majority of Huns, crossed the Danube in 376, and fought Battle of Adrianople in 378. Cassiodorus, i.e. Jordanes recounts that after Ermanaric's death Goths separated in Western Visigoths and Eastern Ostrogoths, the latter remained in "their old Scythian settlements" under Hunnic rule. The Amal Vinitharius retained the "insignia of his princely rank", and trying to escape from the Huns, he invaded the lands of the Antes and their king Boz for merely one year, but Balamber put an end to Ostrogoths independence. After the subjection, followed more complex Ostrogoths royal descending; Ermanaric > Hunimund-Thorismund-Berimud moved with his son Videric with the Visigoths to the West because (they) "despised the Ostrogoths for their subjection to the Huns". Then happened forty years of interregnum and Ostrogoths decided to give the rule to Vandalaris's son Valamir, a relative of Thorismund. Valamir eventually deserted Attila's sons in c. 454. Herwig Wolfram argued the possibility that unknown river Erac could be identified with the river Phasis in Lazica. Otto J. Maenchen-Helfen denied the connection with ancient Erax, and considered Tiligul or lower Dnieper. Wolfram puts the geographical location of events after the battle in 376, in Scythia, but the term shifted more westward and actually meant Dacia and Pannonia. Maenchen-Helfen considered that Cassiodorus would not admit that the Gothic princess Vadamerca became a wife of Balamber if he was not some sort of a king. Wolfram argued that although scholars often identify "Vithimiris" with Vinitharius, and "Videric" with Vandalarius, onomatological and genealogical methods do not go along with historical events, and many difficulties arise. One of them was that Balamber lived in the time of Valamir. However, although of similar etymological names, Balamber, Wolfram related to Iranian Balimber, and as such considered them two different personalities. A number of scholars such as Edward Arthur Thompson, Hyun-Jin Kim, and Peter Heather consider Balamber's story historically improbable, and he may be a version of the better-attested Valamir, or was an invention by the Goths to explain who defeated them.

- Attila arranged for his brother Bleda to be killed on a hunting trip: 445, Byzantine Empire
- LifeSketch: Bleda was a Hunnic ruler, the brother of Attila the Hun. As nephews to Rugila, Attila and his elder brother Bleda succeeded him to the throne. Bleda's reign lasted for eleven years until his death. While it has been speculated by Jordanes that Attila murdered him on a hunting trip, it is unknown exactly how he died. One of the few things known about Bleda is that, after the great Hun campaign of 441, he acquired a Moorish dwarf named Zerco. Bleda was highly amused by Zerco and went so far as to make a suit of armor for the dwarf so that Zerco could accompany him on campaign. Bleda and Attila's rule By 432, the Huns were united under Rugila. His death in 434 left his nephews Attila and Bleda (the sons of his brother Mundzuk) in control over all the united Hun tribes. At the time of their accession, the Huns were bargaining with Byzantine emperor Theodosius II's envoys over the return of several renegade tribes who had taken refuge within the Roman Empire. The following year, Attila and Bleda met with the imperial legation at Margus (present-day Požarevac) and, all seated on horseback in the Hunnic manner, negotiated a successful treaty: the Romans agreed not only to return the fugitive tribes (who had been a welcome aid against the Vandals), but also to double their previous tribute of 350 Roman pounds (ca. 114.5 kg) of gold, open their markets to Hunnish traders, and pay a ransom of eight solidi for each Roman taken prisoner by the Huns. The Huns, satisfied with the treaty, decamped from the empire and returned to their home. Theodosius used this opportunity to strengthen the walls of Constantinople, building the city's first sea wall, and to build up his border defenses along the Danube. For the next five years, the Huns stayed out of Roman sight as they tried to invade the Persian Empire. A crushing defeat in Armenia caused them to abandon this attempt and return their attentions to Europe. In 440, they reappeared on the borders of the Roman Empire, attacking the merchants at the market on the north bank of the Danube that had been established by the treaty. Attila and Bleda threatened further war, claiming that the Romans had failed to fulfill their treaty obligations and that the Bishop of Margus had crossed the Danube to ransack and desecrate the royal Hun graves on the Danube's north bank. They crossed the Danube and laid waste to Illyrian cities and forts on the river, among them, according to Priscus, Viminacium (present-day Kostolac), which was a city of the Moesians in Illyria. Their advance began at Margus, for when the Romans discussed handing over the offending bishop, he slipped away secretly to the Huns and betrayed the city to them. Theodosius had stripped the river's defenses in response to the Vandal Gaiseric's capture of Carthage in 440 and the Sassanid Yazdegerd II's invasion of Armenia in 441. This left Attila and Bleda a clear path through Illyria into the Balkans, which they invaded in 441. The Hunnish army, having sacked Margus and Viminacium, took Singidunum (modern Belgrade) and Sirmium (modern Sremska Mitrovica) before halting. A lull followed in 442, and, during this time, Theodosius recalled his troops from North Africa and ordered a large new issue of coins to finance operations against the Huns. Having made these preparations, he thought it safe to refuse the Hunnish kings' demands. Attila and Bleda responded by renewing their campaign in 443. Striking along the Danube, they overran the military centers of Ratiaria and successfully besieged Naissus (modern Niš) with battering rams and other siege engines (military sophistication that was new to the Hun repertory), then, pushing along the Nišava, they took Serdica (Sofia), Philippopolis (Plovdiv) and Arcadiopolis (Luleburgaz). They encountered and destroyed the Roman force outside Constantinople and were only halted by their lack of siege equipment capable of breaching the city's massive walls. Theodosius admitted defeat and sent the court official Anatolius to negotiate peace terms, which were harsher than the previous treaty: the Emperor agreed to hand over 6,000 Roman pounds (ca. 1,963 kg) of gold as punishment for having disobeyed the terms of the treaty during the invasion; the yearly tribute was tripled, rising to 2,100 Roman pounds (ca. 687 kg) in gold; and the ransom for each Roman prisoner rose to twelve solidi. Their demands met for a time, the Hun kings withdrew into the interior of their empire. According to Jordanes (following Priscus), sometime during the peace following the Huns' withdrawal from Byzantium (probably around 445), Bleda died, and Attila took the throne for himself. A few sources indicate that Bleda tried to kill Attila first, to which Attila retaliated. In 448, Priscus encountered Bleda's widow, then governor of an unnamed village, while on an embassy to Attila's court.

In 412 or 413, the Roman statesman and writer Olympiodorus of Thebes was sent on an embassy to "the first of the kings" of the Huns, Charaton. Olympiodorus wrote an account of this event, which exists now only fragmentarily. Olympiodorus had been dispatched to appease Charaton after the death of a certain Donatus, who "was unlawfully put to death". Historians such as E. A. Thompson have assumed that Donatus was a king of the Huns. Denis Sinor, however, argues that given his obviously Roman name Donatus was likely a Roman refugee living among the Huns. Where Olympiodorus met Charaton is also unclear: due to Olympiodorus's traveling by sea, they may have met somewhere on the Pontic steppe. Maenchen-Helfen and Sinor, however, believe it more likely that Charaton was located in Pannonia. Also in 412, the Huns launched a new raid into Thrace.

- Title Of Nobility: Hunnic chieftain
- LifeSketch: Mundzuk was a Hunnic chieftain, brother of the Hunnic rulers Octar and Rugila, and father of Bleda and Atilla. Jordanes in Getica recounts "For this Attila was the son of Mundzucus, whose brothers were Octar and Ruas, who were supposed to have been kings before Attila, although not altogether of the same [territories] as he". - Father: Kurdiak Turda of the HUNS
- Mother: Wadamerca DES HUNS
- Birth: ABT 370
- Also known as: Octar or Ouptaros
- Title Of Nobility: King of the Huns - Joint rule with Rugila
- LifeSketch: Octar or Ouptaros was a Hunnic ruler. He ruled along brother Rugila according to Jordanes in Getica, "...Mundzucus, whose brothers were Octar and Ruas, who were supposed to have been kings before Attila, although not altogether of the same [territories] as he". Their brother Mundzuk was father of Attila, but he was not a supreme ruler of the Huns. According to Priscus their fourth brother Oebarsius was still alive in 448 AD. Their ancestors and relation with previous rulers Uldin and Charaton are unknown. Similar dual kingship, possibly a geographical division where Rugila ruled over Eastern Huns while Octar over Western Huns, had Attila and Bleda. Octar, identified with Ouptaros, according to Socrates of Constantinople died in 430 near Rhine, "For the king of the Huns, Uptaros by name, having burst asunder in the night from surfeit, the Burgundians attacked that [the Huns of Uptaros] people then without a leader; and although few in numbers and their opponents many, they obtained victory".
