- Father: Kurdiak Turda of the HUNS
- Mother: Wadamerca DES HUNS
- Birth: ABT 368, Eurasian Steppe, Russia
- Also known as: Rugila, Ruga, Rua, Roas
- Title Of Nobility: King of the Huns - Joint rule with Octar
- Treaty of Margus: Attila and Bleda together brokered the Treaty of Margus with Rome in 439 CE.
- LifeSketch: Rugila or Ruga (also Ruas; died second half of the 430s AD), was a ruler who was a major factor in the Huns' early victories over the Roman Empire. He served as an important forerunner with his brother Octar, with whom he initially ruled in dual kingship, possibly a geographical division where Rugila ruled over Eastern Huns while Octar over Western Huns, during the 5th century AD. Initially Rugila had ruled together with his brother Octar, who died in 430 during a military campaign against the Burgundians. In 432, Rugila is mentioned as a sole ruler of the Huns. According to Prosper of Aquitaine, "After the loss of his office, Aetius lived on his estate. When there some of his enemies by an unexpected attack attempted to seize him, he fled to Rome, and from there to Dalmatia. By the way of Pannonia, he reached the Huns. Through their friendship and help he obtained peace with the rulers and was reinstated in his old office. Ruga was ruler of the gens Chunorum". Priscus recounts "in the land of the Paeonians on the river Sava, which according to the treaty of Aetius, general of the Western Romans, belonged to the barbarian", some scholars explain this as meaning that Aetius ceded part of Pannonia Prima to Ruga. Scholars date this cession to 425, 431, or 433. Maenchen-Helfen considered that the area was ceded to Attila. In 422, there was a major Hunnic incursion into Thracia launched from Danube, menacing even Constantinople, which ended with a peace treaty by which Romans had to pay annually 350 pounds of gold. In 432-433, some tribes from Hunnic confederation on the Danube fled to Roman territory and service of Theodosius II. Rugila demanded through his experienced diplomat Esla return of all fugitives, otherwise the peace will be terminated, but soon died and was succeeded by sons of his brother Mundzuk, Bleda and Attila, who became joint rulers of the united Hunnic tribes. The Eastern Roman politician Plinta along quaestor Epigenes nevertheless had to go for adverse negotiations at Margus; according to Priscus, it included trade agreement, the annual tribute was raised to 700 pounds of gold, and fugitives were surrendered, among whom two of royal descent, Mamas and Atakam probably because of conversion to Christianity, were crucified by the Huns at Carso (Hârșova). According to Socrates of Constantinople, Theodosius II prayed to God and managed to obtain what he sought - Ruga was struck dead by a thunderbolt, and among his men followed plague, and fire came down from the heaven consuming his survivors. This text is panegyric on Theodosius II, and happened shortly after 425 AD. Similarly, Theodoret recounts that God helped Theodosius II because he issued a law that ordered destruction of all pagan temples, and Ruga's death was the abundant harvest that followed these good seeds. However, the edict was issued on November 14, 435 AD, so Ruga died after that date. Chronica Gallica of 452 places his death in 434, "Aetius is restored to favor. Rugila, king of the Huns, with whom peace was made, dies. Bleda succeeds him" .

- Father: Donaton of the HUNS

- Birth: ABT 335, Ukraine
- Also known as: Huldin or Uldes of the Huns
- Title Of Nobility: 65th King of The Huns, BET 405 AND 411, Muntenia, Romania
- LifeSketch: Uldin, also spelled Huldin (died before 412) is the first ruler of the Huns whose historicity is undisputed. In 400, Uldin ruled in Muntenia, present-day Romania East of Olt River. The extension of his realm to the North and East is unknown, but to the West probably reached the banks of Danube where Huns had been camped since 378-380. When Gainas, former magister militum praesentalis, with his Gothic followers fled across the borders to "his native land", Uldin "did not think it safe to allow a barbarian with an army of his own to take up dwellings across the Danube", and attacked him. Uldin was victorious, killed Gainas and sent his head to the Emperor Arcadius in Constantinople. Late in the fall of 404 and in 405, according to Sozomen: "About this time the dissensions by which the church was agitated were accompanied, as is frequently the case, by disturbances and commotions in the state. The Huns crossed Ister and devastated Thrace. The robbers in Isauria, gathered in great strength, ravaged the towns and villages between Caria and Phoenicia." In 406, Uldin and Sarus the Goth were called by Roman magister militum Stilicho to help defeat the invasion of Italy by the Goths led by king Radagaisus. Orosius numbered 200,000 Goths. At the Battle of Faesulae (406), Hunnic auxiliaries encircled a significant part of Goths, and Radagaisus tried to escape, but was captured and executed in April 406 AD. It is considered that Goths of Radagaisus fled from the Hunnic lands, who themselves were pushed Westward by other nomadic tribes from the East. In the summer of 408, the Huns learned that Stilicho would not push Alaric I Visigoths into Illyricum, and that Roman troops in the East would be moved to the Persian frontier; accordingly, they entered Balkan and Thrace. The Huns captured Castra Martis in Dacia Ripensis. Jerome mentioned them as feras gentes "whose face and language are terrifying, who display womanly and deeply cut faces, and who pierce the backs of bearded man as they flee". A sufficiently large number of Huns joined the Roman camps, and Uldin, suffering significant casualties and the loss of the whole tribe called Scirii (mostly foot soldiers), was forced to re-cross Danube by March 23, 409. In the summer or fall of 409, military forces of Dalmatia, Pannonia Prima, Noricum and Raetia were entrusted by Honorius to pagan Generidus to repulse Hunnic raids. Uldin's royal power gradually weakened in his last years. Between 408-410, the Huns were largely inactive. As allies of the Western Roman Empire, they did not attack the Visigoths of Alaric I in Pannonia Secunda and Pannonia Savia because they fought under Uldin in Illyricum and Thrace. Some Hun garrisons were in the Roman army led by Stilicho, and in Ravenna. In the summer of 409, a Hunnic army numbering 10,000 men was called into assistance by Honorius, but did not stop Alaric I from Sack of Rome (410). Zosimus records that in late 409 some groups of Huns joined the Visigoths from Pannonia Prima who rode to Italy. Around 410, the future Roman General Aetius, who was then a young man, was sent to the court of Uldin, where he remained with the Huns throughout much of the reign of Charaton, Uldin's successor. His presence as a hostage was probably used as a guaranty for the Hunnic forces which has been sent against Alaric in 410. According to some early historians, Aetius's upbringing amongst militaristic peoples gave him a martial vigour not common in Roman generals of the time. In the same time period the alliance between the Huns and the Alans broke down. In 394, only the Transdanubian Alans led by Saul (not Hebrew, but Iranian Σαυλιος) joined emperor Theodosius I, in 398 served Stilicho, and still under Saul in 402. The Alans are not mentioned as allies of the Huns after 406, and most of them together with the Vandals crossed the Rhine in late 406 and went to Gaul, Spain and Africa. _____________________________________________________ Campaigns of Uldin. Uldin, the first Hun identified by name in contemporary sources, is identified as the leader of the Huns in Muntenia (modern Romania east of the Olt River) in 400. It is unclear how much territory or how many tribes of Huns Uldin actually controlled, although he clearly controlled parts of Hungary as well as Muntenia. The Romans referred to him as a regulus (sub-king): he himself boasted of immense power. In 400, Gainas, rebellious former Roman magister militum fled into Uldin's territory with an army of Goths, and Uldin defeated and killed him, likely near Novae: he sent Gainas's head to Constantinople. Kim suggests that Uldin was interested in cooperating with the Romans while he expanded his control over Germanic tribes in the West. In 406, Hunnic pressure seems to have caused groups of Vandals, Suebi, and Alans to cross the Rhine into Gaul. Uldin's Huns raided Thrace in 404–405, likely in winter. Also in 405, a group of Goths under Radagaisus invaded Italy, with Kim arguing that these Goths originated from Uldin's territory and that they were likely fleeing from some action of his.[63] Stilicho, the Roman magister militum responded by asking for Uldin's aid: Uldin's Huns then destroyed Radagaisus's army near Faesulae in modern Tuscany in 406. Kim suggests Uldin acted in order to demonstrate his ability to destroy any groups of barbarians who might flee Hunnic rule. An army of 1000 of Uldin's Huns were also employed by the Eastern Roman Empire to fight against the Goths under Alaric. After Stilicho's death in 408, however, Uldin switched sides and began aiding Alaric under an army under the command of Alaric's brother-in-law Athaulf. Also in 408, the Huns, under Uldin's command, crossed the Danube and captured the important fortress Castra Martis in Moesia. The Roman commander in Thrace attempted to make peace with Uldin, but Uldin refused his offers and demanded an extremely high tribute. However, many of Uldin's commanders subsequently defected to the Romans, bribed by the Romans. It appears that most of his army was actually composed by Scirii and Germanic tribes, whom the Romans subsequently sold into slavery. Uldin himself escaped back across the Danube, after which he is not mentioned again. The Romans responded to Uldin's invasions by attempting to strengthen the fortifications at the border, increasing the defenses at Constantinople, and taking other measures to strengthen their defences. Hunnic mercenaries had also formed Stilicho's bodyguard: Kim suggests they were a gift from Uldin. The guard was either killed with Stilicho, or is the same as an elite unit of 300 Huns who continued to fight for the Romans against Alaric even after Uldin's invasion. During this same time, probably between 405 and 408, the future Roman magister militum and opponent of Attila Flavius Aetius was a hostage living among the Huns. *wikipedia

- LifeSketch: Norman Venator (Hunter the Norman) [1] was the 2nd chief of Clan Hunter.[2] Born in Ayrshire (possibly Hunterston Castle), He took over from his father in 1153 until 1165. He married Maud, who was the Grand niece of William the Conqueror.[3] Venator Huntar (b. 1160) (d. 1220)[4] Williemo Venator Hunter (b. 1160) (d. ?)[4] Ventor in latin means "The Hunter" In 1130 he changed his name to "Hunter"[4] Norman Huntar received a grant of certain lands in the barony of Arnele, on the extreme west coast of coast of Ayrshire, which were subsequently distinguished as Arnele Huntar, and which formed part of the estate of Hunterston, these lands were the only portion of the district which, from its earliest division in the 12th century, have remained unalienated, Nisbet, in his Heraldry, in treating of the antiquity of this family, makes mention of a charter of King Alexander III, "quam in capella nostra irrevocabile fecimus anno gratia;, 271", in which a grant of land was conferred upon William Baddebie, with the exception of such lands as had been granted to Norman Huntar by King Malcolm IV. " excepta terra uondam Normani Venatoris quod Rex Malcomus frater Regis Wilmi avi nostri ei dedit", and this document is likewise sferred to in the Haddington Collections. The same author states that, in an ancient charter, Arnele "is bounded with terris Normani Venatoris",' which are plainly the lands of Arnele Huntar, which are the lands of Hunterston.[1]

- LifeSketch: Clan Hunter is a Scottish clan. «b»History Origins of the clan«/b» It is likely that the Hunters went to Scotland with David I of Scotland upon his invitation and were given lands named Hunter's Toune. In 1296 Aylmer le Hunter of the county of Ayr appears on the Ragman Rolls submitting to Edward I of England. A charter signed by Robert II of Scotland on 2 May 1374 has survived that confirmed a grant of land to William Hunter for his faithful service rendered and to be rendered to us in return for a silver penny payable to the Sovereign at Hunterston on the Feast of Pentecost. To this day the Laird of Hunterston, chief of Clan Hunter keeps silver pennies, minted in the reigns of Robert II and George V in case of a royal visit on the day appointed for payment of her rent. The William Hunter who received this charter is reckoned to have been the tenth Hunter of Hunterston. In earlier records both William Hunter and Norman Hunter appear using the Latin form of the name, Venator. «b»15th and 16th centuries«/b» The Hunters were hereditary keepers of the royal forests of Arran and Little Cumbrae by the fifteenth century. The family appear to have held this office from an early date and also claim a long descent from people who held similar offices in England and Normandy before they came to Scotland. During the sixteenth century the Hunters rendered chiefly military service. John Hunter, the fourteenth Laird was killed with his king at the Battle of Flodden in 1513. His son was Robert who was trouble with sickness and infirmity and was excused from military service in 1542 by James V of Scotland, providing that he sent his eldest son in his place. His son was Mungo who was killed at the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh in 1547. «b»17th century «/b»Successive generations of Hunters were more peaceful Lairds and tended to their estates and looked after their tenants. Robert Hunter who was a son of the twentieth Laird graduated at the University of Glasgow in 1643 and was minister of West Kilbride. He bought lands and founded the Hunters of Kirkland branch of the clan. A grandson of the twentieth Laird was another Robert Hunter who served under Marlborough and was Governor of Virginia and later Governor of New York. «b»18th and 19th centuries«/b» The family suffered from financial problems in the early eighteenth century. These problems were resolved by yet another Robert Hunter, a younger son of the twenty second Laird who succeeded to the estate and managed it well. He was succeeded by his daughter, Eleanora, who married her cousin, Robert Caldwell. He assumed the name Hunter and together they improved the estate and built the present Hunterston House. Their son had two daughters: Jane Hunter who married Gould Weston and Eleanor who married Robert William Cochran-Patrick. «b»20th century «/b»Jane Hunter-Weston died in 1911 and was succeeded by her son, Lieutenant General Sir Aylmer Hunter-Weston who served on Kitchener's staff during the Egyptian War of 1896. He also served in the Boer Wars and also as a divisional officer of the British Expeditionary Force in World War I. Also during that war he served during the Gallipoli landings and later commanded the 8th Army on the Western Front. «b»Post Clan Activity«/b» As times became more settled the Hunters devoted more time to farming their extensive lands, although they still produced soldiers of distinction over the generations. Gould Hunter-Weston, husband of Jane Hunter-Weston (26th Laird) fought in India at Lucknow in 1857 and their eldest son, Aylmer (27th Laird) was a well-known general in the First World War. He later became Member of Parliament for North Ayrshire. During her tenure as Clan Chief, Eleanora (28th Laird) fought in the courts, but lost, a compulsory purchase order for land at Hunterston to build a nuclear power station. The last Clan Chief, Neil Hunter of Hunterston and of that Ilk, along with his wife Sonia, Madam Hunter of Hunterston, continued the fight against industrialization. He was well known for his sailing prowess and represented the United Kingdom in two Olympic Games, winning a silver medal at Melbourne in 1956. Like many Hunters before him he was in true tradition an expert in archery. Lady Pauline Hunter of Hunterston and of that Ilk is the 30th Laird and Chief of Clan Hunter. Her mid-19th century ancestor is reported in May, 1859 as furthering the philanthropic tradition of Clan Hunter; "The Lady of Hunterston tries to elevate and benefit her neighbours in the village of West Kilbride", while her husband, the Laird of Hunterston, "seeks the good of his tenants by provoking emulation amongst them, as regards the quality of their stock". «b»Clan Seat & Castle«/b» The seat of the chief of Clan Hunter has been at Hunterston Castle for over 800 years.

- Also known as: Huctred of Tynedal
- LifeSketch: Uchtred Lord of Tynedale was the only son of Waltheof Earl of Northampton and Huntingdon and his wife Judith of Lens. Waltheof and Judith married in 1070, it is not known when exactly Uchtred was born, however it is known he was not the oldest child, he is usually reported as the youngest. Matilda (Maud) was the oldest child, followed by Adelise (Alice). Uchtred was part of a powerful family with influential familial connections. Uchtred's father Waltheof was Earl of Northampton and Huntingdon, he was the son of Siward, Earl of Northumbria and Aelfflaed, who was descended from Uchtred the Bold, Earl of Northumbria. Uchtred was undoubtably named after this powerful great-great-grandfather. His mother Judith of Lens was the daughter of Lambert II, Count of Lens and Adelaide of Normandy, Countess of Aumale. As well as the niece of King William I of England (William the Conqueror). Uchtred's oldest sister Maud married Simon I de Senlis, Earl of Huntingdon-Northampton and after his death married King David I od Scotland and became Queen consort of Scotland. Uchtred's other sister Adelise (Alice of Nothumbria) married the Anglo-Norman noble Raoul III of Tosny. Uchtred himself married Bethoc, daughter of King Donald III of Scotland, more commonly known as Donald Bane. Their marriage date is reported variously from 1085 to 1112. They had one known daughter: - Hextilda, married Richard Comyn, Justiciar of Lothian. Generations later, John II Comyn, Lord of Badenoch, would make claim to the Scottish Throne based upon his descent from Donald Bane through his ancestress Hextilda. Uchtred died about 1155, the exact date is not known. His widow Bethoc married a 2nd time to Radulf, son of Dunegall, Lord of Nithsdale. Uchtred has been identified in various ways: Uchtred, Uhtred, Huchtred, Huctred, and Hadrian de Tyndale. He is usually titled Lord of Tyndale or simply of Tyndale, also as FitzWaltheof. The 1130 Pipe Roll records him as "Uctred fil Walleof" in Northumberland. --------------------- "DONALD ' BANE ' after the death of his nephew Duncan, ascended the throne for the second time, but after the expiry of three years was deposed by his nephew Edgar, who imprisoned him and deprived him of his eyesight. He died at Rescobie, though in what year is not known, leaving an only child: — Bethoc, who was married to Huctred of Tynedale, by whom she had a daughter, Hextilda, married to Richard Comyn; their great-great-grand- son John Comyn was a Competitor for the Scottish crown in 1291. She married, secondly, Malcolm, second Earl of Atholl." https://archive.org/details/scotspeeragefoun01pauluoft/page/3/mode/1up -------------------- DONALD (-in prison Rescobie, Forfarshire 1099, bur Dunkeld Abbey, later transferred to Isle of Iona). Matthew Paris names him as brother of King Malcolm, and records that he was elected by the Scots to succeed his brother in 1093 as DONALD III "Bane" King of Scotland[280]. Florence of Worcester records that "Dufenaldum regis Malcolmi fratrem" was elected king after his brother's death but that "filius regis Malcolmi Dunechain" expelled "patruum suum Dufenaldum"[281]. According to Florence of Worcester, he expelled all the English from the Scottish court[282]. "Douenald filius Conchat Regis" made donations "cum ceteris regibus…Duncano rege Edgaro et Alexandro et David fratribus"[283]. This charter is undated and the reference to the four brothers all as kings indicates that it is probably spurious. Florence of Worcester records that King Donald was deposed in 1094 by his nephew Duncan, with help from the English and Normans[284]. The Annals of Inisfallen record that "Domnall son of Donnchadh” killed “Donnchadh son of Mael Coluim king of Alba” in 1094 and “took the kingship of Alba”[285]. The Chronicle of John of Fordun records that "his uncle Donald…again usurped the kingship" after the death of "Duncan, King Malcolm’s illegitimate son" and reigned for three years[286]. Florence of Worcester records that "clitorem Eadgarum" led an army to Scotland in [1097] to place "consobrinum suum Eadgarum Malcolmi regis filium" on the Scottish throne after expelling "patruo suo Dufenaldo"[287]. William of Malmesbury records that King Duncan II "was murdered by the wickedness of his uncle Donald" and that the latter was "dispatched by the contrivance of David, the youngest brother and the power of [King] William [II]"[288]. He was imprisoned. The Chronicle of the Picts and Scots dated 1251 records that "Donald mac Donchat" was captured "a Edgar mac Malcolm", blinded, died in "Rosolpin" and was buried "in Dunkelden", transferred to Iona[289]. m ---. The name of Donald's wife is not known. King Donald III & his wife had [one child]: a) [BETHOC (-[1150/70][290]). The sources are contradictory regarding the supposed child of King Donald. The proofs relating to the claim to the Scottish throne in 1291 made by "dñi Johannis Comyn" name "Gothrik" as the son of "Dovenald filius Duncani filii Erici", and trace John Comyn’s descent from him[291]. However, in the Great Roll, John Comyn traced his descent from Bethoc, daughter and heiress of Donald[292]. Bethoc’s first marriage is confirmed by a charter of King Henry III dated 1261 which confirmed to John Comyn the land inherited from Hextildis, wife of Richard Comyn and daughter of Uhtred son of Waltheof[293]. Her second marriage is referred to by Young but he does not cite the corresponding primary source, which has not yet been identified[294]. Altogether the chronology for Bethoc is stretched almost to beyond credibility. Her supposed father King Donald Bane must have been born before 1040, and yet his daughter is supposed to have been living more than 100 years later, and her supposed second husband living in the last quarter of the 12th century. It is suggested that this supposed descent of Hextilda, wife of Richard Comyn, from King Donald Bane should be treated with caution. m firstly ([1085]) UHTRED Lord of Tynedale, son of [295]WALTHEOF & his wife ---. The 1130 Pipe Roll records "Uctred fil Walleof" in Northumberland[296]. m secondly RADULF, son of DUNEGALL Lord of Nithsdale (-[1185]).] [Bethoc & her first husband] had [one child]: i) [HEXTILDA of Tynedale . The proofs relating to the claim to the Scottish throne in 1291 made by "dñi Johannis Comyn" name "Hextilde" as daughter and heiress of "Gothrik", son of "Dovenald filius Duncani filii Erici", and "Willelmo" as her son and heir[297]. “R. Cumin” donated property to Hexham Priory, with the consent of “uxoris meæ Hextildis”, by undated charter which names “fratrem meum Walterum”[298]. "Ric Cymyn" donated "ecclesiam de Lyntunruderie" to Kelso monastery, for the souls of "Henrici comitis dni mei et…Johis filii mei quorum corpa apud eos tumulant", by charter dated to [1160], witnessed by "Hextild sponsa mea, Od filio meo…"[299]. "Ricardus Cumin" donated [Slapfeld] to Holyrood Abbey, with the consent of "Hestild uxoris mee et heredum meorum", by charter dated to [1166] witnessed by "…Odinello et Simone filiis meis…"[300]. Her second marriage is confirmed by the undated charter under which “Hextildis comitissa de Eththetela” donated property to Rievall Abbey, for the soul of “domini mei Richardi Cumin”[301]. "Malcolmus comes de Athoil" donated "ecclesiam de Dul" to St Andrew’s priory by undated charter witnessed by "Dunecano comite de Fif, Hextilda comitissa sponsa mea…Henrico et Dunecano filiis meis…"[302]. The Liber Vitæ of Durham lists (in order) "Hextild, Willelmus, Odenellus, Simon, Ricardus Cumin…", and in a later passage "Malcolmus filius Mal. et comes Athodlie, Hextilda filia Ucthredi uxor eius…"[303]. m firstly ([1144/50]) RICHARD Comyn, son of --- Cumin [Comyn] & his wife --- (-[1179]). m secondly (after 1179) as his second wife, her second cousin, MALCOLM Earl of Atholl, son of MADDAD Earl of Atholl & his first wife --- (-[1186/Aug 1198]).] https://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/SCOTLAND.htm#_ftnref280 -------------------- John, Lord of Tyndale DeJoinville, 1075-1155 was born in 1075, in Winchester, Hampshire, England, to Earl Waldevurus DeJoinville and Lady Judith DeNormandy. - Father: Roger DE HUNTINGFIELD
- Mother: Joyce DE EUGAINE
- Birth: ABT 1280, Suffolk, England
- Christening: England
- AFN: 8Q44-M1
- LifeSketch: Biography Joan probably was born circa 1280, the daughter of Sir Roger Huntingfield of Huntingfield, Suffolk and his wife, Joyce d'Engaine, the daughter of John d'Engaine. She married Sir Richard Basset, 1st Lord Basset of Weldon, son of Ralph Basset and Alianore de la Wade, circa 1299. As her dowry, Joan brought to the marriage the manor of Wilstone in Tring, Hertfordshire. Joan and Sir Richard had three sons: 1.) Sir Ralph Basset, 2nd Lord Basset 2.) Richard Basset 3.) Robert Basset Research Notes Birth Date Joan's birth date is unknown; the current estimate is based on the known birth date (1300) of her son, Ralph. Death Joan's father died sometime before 5 December 1302 when an Inquisition Post Mortem was conducted. Joan is not mentioned in that IPM, but neither is her brother, Roger, who was alive at that time. Joan's husband died a prisoner after the battle of Bannockburn, which was fought on 24 June 1314. There is no existent IPM for Sir Ralph's death, and thus there is no evidence if she was still alive as of that date.
- Death: 4 MAY 1341, Huntingfield, Suffolk, England

- Father: William DE HUNTINGFIELD
- Mother: Isabel FitzWilliam of GRESSINGHALL
- Birth: ABT 1206, of Huntingfield, Suffolk, England
- LifeSketch: “Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013): “WILLIAM DE HUNTINGFIELD, Knt., of Huntingfield and Mendham, Suffolk, Harlton, Cambridgeshire, Frampton, Fishtoft, and Southorpe, Lincolnshire, etc., Constable of Dover Castle, 1203-4, Warden of the Cinque Ports, and Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk, 1209-11, justice itinerant in Lincolnshire, and, in right of his wife, patron of Castleacre Priory, son and heir of Roger [Fitz William] de Huntingfield, of Huntingfield, Linstead, and Mendham, Suffolk, Frampton, Huttoft, Southorpe, and Tytton (in Wyberton), Lincolnshire, East Bradenham, Norfolk, etc., by Alice de Senlis, daughter of Saher de Quincy, of Long Buckby and Daventry, Northamptonshire. He was born about 1160. He married before 1194 ISABEL FITZ WILLIAM (otherwise DE GRESSENHALL), widow successively of Berenger de Cressy, and Osmond de Stuteville, of Weston Colville, Cambridgeshire (died in Palestine, probably during the Siege of Joppa about 1187), and daughter and heiress of William Fitz Roger, of Gressenhall and Castleacre, Norfolk, by his wife, Aeliva. They had two sons, Roger, Knt., and presumably Saher, and four daughters, Alice, Isabel, Sarah, and Margaret (or Margery). In 1194 he disputed with his wife's son, William de Stuteville, concerning his wife's dower. In 1195 the Abbot of St. Edmunds granted the whole vill of Wendling, Norfolk to William de Huntingfield and his wife, Isabel, and her heirs for 50s. a year. Sometime c.1204-12, he witnessed a charter of Alexander, Abbot of Sibton to Thomas son of Roger de Huntingfield, presumably his brother. In 1205 he was granted the manor of Clafford, Hampshire. In the period, 1204-17, he witnessed a charter of Ralph the chaplain of Heveningham to John Fitz Robert, lord of Ubbeston. His wife, Isabel, died in 1207. In 1208 he had custody of the lands of his brother, Roger, which had been seized in consequence of the interdict. From 1208 to 1210 he was one of the justices before whom fines were levied. In the period, 1210-18, he witnessed a charter of his kinsman, Saher de Quincy, Earl of Winchester. In 1211 he gave the king six fair Norway goshawks for license to marry his daughter, Alice, then widow of Richard de Solers, and to have assignation of her dowry out of the lands of her late husband. In 1213 he held the office of accountant with Aubrey de Vere, Earl of Oxford, for the customs of Norfolk and Suffolk. In 1215 he joined the confederate barons against the king. He was one of the twenty-five barons appointed to secure the observance of Magna Carta, which King John signed 15 June 1215. He served as a witness to the charter granting freedom of elections to the abbeys. He was among the barons excommunicated by Pope Innocent III in late 1215, and his lands were taken into the king's hands. He reduced Essex and Suffolk for Prince Louis of France, and in retaliation John plundered his estates in Norfolk and Suffolk. In Nov. 1216 he was granted the vill of Grimsby, Lincolnshire with all liberties and free customs by Prince Louis of France. He fought at the Battle of Lincoln 20 May 1217, where he was taken prisoner by the king's forces. On 23 June 1217 all his lands in Lincolnshire were granted to John Marshal. On conclusion of peace, he made peace with King Henry III 6 Oct. 1217, and had restitution of his estates. In 1218 he sued Nichole de la Haye for the recovery of chattels worth £273, which she seized from him in Lincolnshire when he was at arms against the king; a compromise was reached whereby Nichole gave William 30 silver marks in return for which he quitclaimed to her "all the right and claim that he had against her." In 1219 he had leave to go to the Holy Land on crusade; he appointed Thomas his brother to act on his behalf during his absence.
