- LifeSketch: Bran, King of Siluria, also commander of the British fleet. In the year A.D. 36 he resigned the crown to his son Caradoc and became Arch-Druid of the college of Siluria, where he remained some years until called upon to be a hostage for his son. During his seven years in Rome he became the first royal convert to Christianity, and was baptized by the Apostle Paul, as was his son Caradoc and the latter's two sons, Cyllinus and Cynon. Henceforth he was known as Bran the Blessed Sovereign. "He was the first to bring the faith of Christ to the Cymry." His recorded proverb is: "There is no good apart from God." He introduced the use of vellum into Britain. notes or source: ancestry.com & HBJ: King Caradoc's birth-book (pedigree register) records his own as well as others' descent from illustrious ancestors, through thirty-six generations from *Aedd Mawr. BRAN The Blessed. Bran Fendigaid ap Llyr Llediaith. (Bran Vendigaid, Bendigeid Vran, Bran Fendigaid, Bendigeidfran, Branovices, Bendigeiduran, Bendigeid = Blessed). (Geoffrey of Monmoth confuses him with Bren, Brennus)(Often mixed with Bron, who is a separate person of later date) (Often mixed together with a later mythological creation called The Fisher-King). The name "Bran" translates from Welsh as "raven". King of Siluria (now Monmouthshire), and king of Britain in Welsh mythology. Born about 60 A.D. [6 A.D.?] (21 B.C.-S4)(29 B.C.-S7); son of LLYR Llediaith (King Lear) ap Baran and Penarddun. Some sources (?) say that Iweriadd is the mother of Bran and Branwen. Said to have became King of Burgundy in right of his wife, the sole heiress of its royal house. (S6). Since his son Caradawg is often confused with Caradoc (Caractacus), who was taken to Rome; Bran is often confused with Cunobelin. The story that Bran was taken as a captive to Rome where he joined the household of St. Paul, returning to Britain with Aristobulus and Joseph of Arimathea some years later, and thus becoming among the first to introduce Christianity to the Island, hence his epithet of "the Blessed;" is a result of this confusion, and is a late 17th century fabrication based on misinformation. He married Enygeus, a sister of Casswallan, who was his mother’s brother. [He married his mother’s sister?]. Casswallan was a British king in 62 A.D., and was made commander of all British forces in Caesar’s first invasion in 55 B.C. He was forced to pay tribute and died in 48 B.C. [These dates are improbable.] (S3). He is often said to have as a wife Anna, the daughter of St. Joseph of Arimathea, probably through confusion with his grandmother, Beli Mawr's wife. {S12}. Bran was said to have been an early King of the Silures tribe of Gwent. His castle was Corbenic or Castell Dinas Bran, the later home of the later Kings of Powys. Both names deriving from the word Raven or Crow. {S12}. In Welch mythological tales he is described to be a giant, of such a large size that no house could contain him. In Celtic mythology, Bran appears as a semi-humanized giant residing at Castell Dinas Bran. There appears to be no archaeological evidence for his worship. {S12}. Geoffrey of Monmouth transformed him into an early British King named Brennius, though his story probably relates to King Bran Hen of Bryneich. {S12}. Bran was ruler of a large area of southeastern Britain from about 1 A.D. to about 42 A.D. Bran was King of Siluria, also commander of the British fleet. In the year A.D. 36 he resigned the crown to his son Caradoc and became Arch-Druid of the college of Siluria, where he remained some years. He is attributed with the saying, “Let him who is a chief be a bridge.” Bran Fendigaid ap Llyr Llediaith (Bran The Blessed), King of Siluria. Born about 60 AD. Said to have introduced Christianity to the nation of the Cymry from Rome, where he was seven years a hostage. {S2}. In Welsh myth, Bran was said to have been killed while leading an invasion of Ireland. Bran was said to have instructed his men to bury his head in the White Mount in London, where it would ward off invasion as long as it remained undisturbed. (King Arthur is said to have had the head removed from the site, saying that Britain should be protected by the valour of its people rather than by supernatural means.). According to a manuscript preserved in the Harleian Collection at the British Museum, Bran ab Llyr also shared the captivity of his family, and was conveyed with them to Rome, where he was detained as a hostage for the peaceable conduct of the valiant Caractacus, who is said to have been permitted, with his wife and daughter, to return immediately to Britain. After remaining at Rome for seven years, Bran at length received permission to return to his native country ; and having, during his stay in Italy, been converted to Christianity, he was the means of introducing that religion into Britain, and on that account was called Vendigeid, or "the Blessed : " he died about the year 80. {S7}. There were three holy families in the Isle of Britain. The first was the family of Bran the Blessed, ths son of Llyr Llediaith; for Bran was the first who brought the faith of Christ to this island from Rome. He was imprisoned through the treachery of Aregwedd Föeddawg,[2] the daughter of Afarwy[3] the son of Lludd. The second was the family of Cynedda Wledig, who first gave land and privilege to God and the saints in the Isle of Britain. The third was Brychan of Brecknockshire, who educated his children and grandchildren in learning and generosity, that they might be able to share the faith in Christ with the Cambrians, where they were without faith. {S9}. Branwen. (daughter). (or Bronwen, the "white-bosomed," as she is more frequently called). SOURCES: [S1]. Ancestry.com [S2]. http://www.mathematical.com/llyrbran60.html [S3]. - LifeSketch: "Roderick the Great" "Mawr the Great" Rhodri ap Merfyn (c. 820–878), later known as Rhodri the Great (Welsh: Rhodri Mawr), succeeded his father, Merfyn Frych, as King of Gwynedd in 844. Rhodri annexed Powys c. 856 and Seisyllwg c. 871. He is called "King of the Britons" by the Annals of Ulster. In some later histories, he is referred to as "King of Wales", although the title is anachronistic and his realm did not include southern Wales. Lineage and inheritance Rhodri was the son of Merfyn Frych, who had claimed Gwynedd upon the extinction of Cunedda's male line. Rhodri then inherited the realm after his father's death around 844. Merfyn hailed from "Manaw" which may either refer to the Isle of Man or Manau, the ancestral homeland of all Gwynedd's kings since Cunedda. According to later genealogies, his mother or grandmother was Nest ferch Cadell of the ruling dynasty in Powys. Although surviving texts of Welsh law expressly forbid inheritance along the maternal line, Nest and Rhodri's supposed inheritance was later used to justify Gwynedd's annexation of Powys after the c. 855 death of Cyngen ap Cadell in preference to Cyngen's other heirs. Similarly, Rhodri's marriage to Angharad ferch Meurig was used to explain his supposed inheritance of her brother Gwgon's kingdom of Ceredigion after that king's death in 872[a] via a principle of jure uxoris that does not survive in our sources for Welsh law. Reign Now the master of much of modern Wales, Rhodri faced pressure both from the English and, increasingly, from Vikings, called the "black gentiles"[b] in the Welsh sources. The Danish are recorded ravaging Anglesey in 854. In 856, Rhodri won a notable victory and killed their leader Gorm. The Chronicle of the Princes records two victories by Rhodri in 872: the first at a place given variously as Bangolau,[1] Bann Guolou,[2] or Bannoleu,[3] where he defeated the Vikings on Anglesey "in a hard battle"[1] and the second at Manegid[1] or Enegyd[4] where the Vikings "were destroyed". The Chronicle of the Princes records his death occurring at the Battle of Sunday on Anglesey in 873;[1] the Annals of Wales record the two events in different years[2][3] and Phillimore's reconstruction of its dates places Rhodri's death in 877.[2] According to the Chronicle, Rhodri and his brother Gwriad were killed during a Saxon invasion (which probably would have been under Ceolwulf of Mercia, given that the Wessex forces under Alfred the Great were fighting Vikings in East Anglia at the time). The Annals record no great details of the death, but where the B text calls Gwriad Rhodri's brother,[3] the A text has him as Rhodri's son instead.[2] It is likely he was killed in battle given that all the sources call his son Anarawd's victory over the Mercians at the Battle of the Conwy a few years later "God's vengeance for Rhodri". Succession Rhodri died leaving at least four sons to share his land among themselves. The traditional account is that his eldest, Anarawd, became king of Gwynedd and the head of the subsequent House of Aberffraw which produced Gruffudd ap Cynan and Llywelyn the Great. Another, Cadell, was given Ceredigion and killed his brother Merfyn to claim Powys as well. Cadell's family was later known as the House of Dinefwr, after its base of operations was moved by Hywel the Good to Dyfed following another (supposed) inheritance via his marriage to Elen ferch Llywarch. Hywel's wide domain, later known as Deheubarth, briefly eclipsed Gwynedd under his immediate heirs before fracturing. A fourth son, possibly too young to have been considered for the first division of Rhodri's lands, took part in Anarawd's 881 revenge against Mercia and, wounded there, became known to history as Tudwal the Lame, a condition disqualifying him from rule under Cyfraith Hywel, Welsh customary law. Children Anarawd ap Rhodri (died 913)[5] Cadell ap Rhodri (854–907)[5] Gwriad ap Rhodri: He had a son named Gwgawn who was killed in 955.[5] Tudwal ap Rhodri (born 860)

Tudwal Gloff AP RHODRI MAWR
\-Queen Angharad VERCH MEURIG of Ceredigion and Deheubarth
- Father: Rhodri Mawr AP MERFYN
- Mother: Queen Angharad VERCH MEURIG of Ceredigion and Deheubarth
- Birth: 863, Caer Seiont, Caernarvonshire, Wales
- Fact: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tudwal_Gloff
- LifeSketch: Tudwalls father, Rhodri the Great, by conquest and alleged inheritances, had become ruler of most of northern Wales. However, under Welsh law he was bound to divide his lands among his able-bodied children upon his death during a Mercian invasion around 878. Anarawd, the eldest,[1] retained the principal estate at Aberffraw and the throne of Gwynedd. His brothers Cadell and Merfyn received large estates as well, sometimes said to include the kingdoms of Ceredigion and Powys, respectively. For this, one of the Welsh Triads records the brothers as the "Three Diademed Princes of the Isle of Britain".[2] (Rhodri's fourth son, Tudwal the Lame, was apparently too young for the initial division.) The brothers are recorded as cooperating closely against the rulers of the remaining lesser kingdoms of Wales. Æthelred of Mercia invaded Gwynedd around 881 and the annals hailed his defeat at Cymryd in the Battle of the Conwy as Dial Rhodri: "God's vengeance for Rhodri". Tudwal was old enough to participate in this battle, but his disfigurement on the field left him unfit for rule in Welsh eyes. (found at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anarawd_ap_Rhodri#cite_note-1) Tudwall Gloff, or the lame, so called from the effect of a severe wound in the knee, which he received at he battle of Cymryd, a place within two miles of the town Conway. In the third year after the death of Rhodri, the Mercians, encouraged by the former success, again invaded North Wales, but being met at the place last mentioned by Anarawd, the young reigning prince, his brother Tudwal, and their forces, the Angles suffered a signal defeat. Prince Anarawd ordered this decisive victory to be chronicled under the appellation of "Gwaith dial Rhodri, " i.e. Revenge for the death of Rhodri. Tudwal for his general good conduct and bravery in this battle, was rewarded by the diademed princes, his brothers, with an additional grant of lands in Uchelgoed Gwynedd, and the lordship of Ceredigion, or that western tract lying between the rivers Dovey and Teivy. - LifeSketch: Merfyn ap Rhodri From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia This is a Welsh name. It means Merfyn son of Rhodri. Merfyn ap Rhodri (died c. 900) was a late 9th-century Aberffraw prince of Gwynedd. He is sometimes credited with ruling Powys after the death of his father Rhodri the Great in AD 878. In the accounts where he is credited as a king, he is reported to have lost his realm to an invasion by his brother Cadell, King of Ceredigion. Merfyn's death may be connected to the incursion into Anglesey by the Viking Ingimundr in the first decade of the 10th century. The drowning of his son Haearnddur, or "Haardur", was reported by both the Chronicle of the Princes[1] and the Annals of Wales.[2] The first places it in the year 953; Phillimore's reconstruction of the latter's dating[3] would place it in 956.
