- Father: Karolus MAGNUS Rex Francorum Imperator Romanorum
- Mother: Hildegard VON VINZGAU Fränkische Königin
- Birth: 775, Aachen Fränkisches Reich
- Also known as: Rotrude of Chelles
- Also known as: Hrotrudis, Hruotrud, Hruodrud, Chrotrude
- Also known as: Hrotrudis, Hruotrud, Hruodrud, Chrotrude
- BECAME A NUN: Rotrude eventually became a nun, joining her aunt Gisela, abbess of Chelles.
- Affiliation: Carolingian Dynasty
- LifeSketch: Rotrude (or Rotrudis, Hrotrud, Hruodrud, Hruotrud) was the oldest daughter of Charlemagne and his second wife Hildegard, born about 775 in Aachen Palace. She was the second daughter born but her older sister died an infant and in the 'Vita Karoli Magni' Einhard refers to her as Charlemagne's oldest daughter. Rotrude was educated in the Palace School at Aachen, along with her brothers and sisters, but was also tutored by a monk, Elisaeus, specifically sent from Greece to teach her the Greek language and manners. At 6 years old Rotrude was betrothed to the Byzantine emperor Constantine VI, whose mother Irene was ruling as regent. The engagement was broken in 788, after the alliance fell apart. Rotrude never married, she did, however, have a relationship with Rorgon (later Count of Maine) about 799. This may have been an attempt by Rorgon to marry into the royal family but Charlemagne did not often allow his daughters to marry. It is possible that upon discovering the affair, Charlemagne sent Rorgon from court and arranged a marriage, for Rorgon married Bilechilde about the same time (799). In 800 Rotrude and Rorgon had an illegitimate son, Louis, who became Abbot of Saint-Denis, Saint-Riquier, and Saint-Wandrille. Rorgon II, the son of Rorgon and his wife Bilechilde, was born the same year. Rotrude eventually became a nun, joining her aunt Gisela, abbess of Chelles. The two women authored a letter to Alcuin of York, who was at Tours at the time, requesting that he write a commentary explaining the Gospel of John. As a result, Alcuin eventually produced his seven-book Commentaria in Iohannem Evangelistam, a more accessible companion to the gospel than St. Augustine's massive and challenging Tractatus in St. John. Commentators have dated the letter to the spring of 800, four years before Alcuin's death and ten before Rotrude's. In contemporary views of history, most scholars discriminate between the two phases of Rotrude's life. Political histories of her father Charlemagne discuss her as a princess who was potentially a pawn and a woman of questionable morals, while religious histories discuss her as the second nun in the letter from Chelles. Er kam um 800 an den Hof Karls des Großen Ihre Kinder waren Ludwig (* um 800; † 867), den späteren Abt von Saint-Denis und Kanzler Karls des Kahlen Adaltrud, ∞ Gerhard, Herzog der Auvergne ------------ “Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013): “CHARLEMAGNE, King of the Franks, 768-814, King of the Langobards, 773-814, Emperor of the Romans, 800-814, son of Pépin (nicknamed "le Bref”), King of the Franks, by Bertrade, daughter of Charibert, Count of Laon. - LifeSketch: Count Rudolph (or Rudolf) of Ponthieu (died 866) was a son of Welf (also Hwelf or Welf I) by Hedwig of Bavaria, and thus a brother of Judith of Bavaria, wife of Emperor Louis the Pious. Through Judith’s influence, her brother Rudolph acquired and became Lay Abbot of the Abbeys of Saint Riquier and Jumieges. In April 830, Frankish nobility revolted against Emperor Louis in order to "liberate" him from the influence of his wife Judith. Louis was placed under house arrest, whilst Judith and her brothers Rudolph and Conrad I, Count of Auxerre, were imprisoned in Aquitanian monasteries. The two brothers were later freed when their nephew Charles the Bald assumed the throne. Rudolph was married to Hruodun (died 867), who bore him: . Conrad, Count of Paris and Sens (died 882) .

- Clan Name: House of Heruli
- LifeSketch: Wikipedia - Rodolf, petty king Silinga In the early 6th century, the Lombard king Wacho took Silinga as his third wife, who was said to be the daughter of the last king of the Heruls.[25] This has led some scholars to believe that Silinga probably was a daughter of Rodulf;[26] she again had the son Walthari.[27] The marriage between Wacho and Silinga functioned to legitimize the Lombards as the successors to the kingdom of the Heruls.[28] It has been debated whether Rodulf may have influenced later heroic poetry, since the causes of the war between the Lombards and the Heruli (as reported by Paul the Deacon) concerns related issues. Some have furthermore argued that Rodulf could be the background for the character Hrólfr Kraki who appears in the later sagas. Evidence for this includes the significant similarities between the traditions of, on the one side, the Scyldings of the Skjöldunga saga and the Scylfings of the Swedish sagas, and on the other, historical knowledge of the environment around the Heruli, Goths and Huns It has also been speculated that the Ráðulfr mentioned in the Rök Runestone (which also mentions Theodoric the Great) could be identical with Rodulf.[22] ************************ The History of the Later Roman Empire (in sources) ...This defeat had important results. It led to the dissolution of the Herul nation into two portions, of which one migrated northward and returned to the old home of the people in Scandinavia . The rest moved first into the former territory of the Rugians, but finding the land a desert they begged the Gepids to allow them to settle in their country . The Gepids granted the request, but repaid themselves by carrying their cattle and violating their women. Then the Heruls sought the protection the Emperor who readily granted them land one the Illyrian provinces. But their rapacious instincts soon drove them to plunder and maltreat the provincials and Anastasius was compelled to send the army to chastise them. Many were killed, the rest made complete submission and were suffered to remain. No people quite so barbarous had ever yet been settled on Roman soil. It was was their habit to put to death the old and the sick and the women were expected hang themselves when their husbands died. When Justinian came to the throne he effected their conversion to Christianity. Their king with his nobles was invited Constantinople where he was baptized with all his party, the Emperor standing sponsor, and was dismissed with handsome gifts. Larger subsidies were granted them and better lands in the neighbourhood Singidunum with the province Second Pannonia. (A.D. 527-528) Henceforward for some years they fulfilled their duties Federates and supplied contingents the Roman army But though their savagery had been mitigated after they embraced the Christian faith they were capricious and faithless they had not even the merit of chaste manners for which Tacitus and Salvian praise the Germanic peoples. They were the worst people in the whole world in the opinion of a contemporary historian.3

- Birth: ABT 950, England
- LifeSketch: Styr Ulfsson was the son of Ulf. He is identified by Simeon of Durham as a wealthy and prominent citizen of York. However, considering his name, he is more likely to have been of Deira, which is Eastern Yorkshire. A man of this name attested royal diplomas conveying land in Derbyshire, bordering Deira, and possessed estates in Teesdale, northern edge of Deira, which he granted to the Church of St. Cuthbert in Durham. It is also believed he had estates in Stearsby, "Styr's Settlement", 10 miles north of York. The royal diplomas identify Styr Ulfsson as a loyal supporter of King Ælthelred of England. Styr's wife is not known, however, they are known to have had a daughter: Sige, also Sigen. Sige married Uchtred the Bold, Earl of Northumbria, as his second wife. This was surely a political marriage. Sige certainly came with a wealthy dowry but more than that, the support of a wealthy and influential 'friend' of King Ælthelred, could not help but boost Uchtred's own standing in Northumbria. Part of their marriage agreement was that Uchtred would kill Thurbrand, identified as a mortal enemy of Styr. Why they were enemies we do not know, perhaps because Thurbrand had betrayed King Ælthelred. Uchtred did not kill Thurbrand, much to his own detriment. Sige and Uchtred had 2 son before separating, grandsons of Styr, Eadulf (Eadwulf) and Gospatric. Uchtred should have killed Thurbrand as agreed, for in 1016 Thurbrand murdered Uchtred. It is not known what became of Styr or when he died.

- Father: Garibald I Herzog der Bajuwaren in BAIERN
- Mother: Waldrada von den Langobarden
- Birth: ABT 560, Herzogtum Baiern
- Also known as: Tassilon der Merovingen
- Also known as: Tassilon der Merovingen
- Title Of Nobility: According to Paul the Deacon, 8th century historian of the Lombards, he was appointed Bavarian "rex" by Childebert II, Frankish king of Austrasia, ending the war with the Franks.
- Clan Name: House of Agilofing
- LifeSketch: Wikipedia - Tassilo I (or Tassilon) (560 – 610) was Duke of Bavaria from 591 to his death. According to Paul the Deacon, he was appointed as Bavarian rex by Childebert II, Frankish king of Austrasia, in 591, ending the war with the Franks. The war began during the reign of Tassilo's predecessor, Garibald I, when Garibald concluded a marriage alliance with the Lombards. We do not know whether Garibald died or was deposed. Nor do we know Tassilo's exact relationship to Garibald, though we can assume Tassilo was a close relation if not his son. The fact that Childebert named Tassilo duke shows Frankish control over the Bavarian state. Paul the Deacon also tells us that Tassilo soon moved into the lands of the Slavs (probably the recently conquered eastern Tyrol and Carinthia), and returned victorious with much plunder. This victory proved to be short-lived as Paul tells us of 2,000 Bavarians, who were slain to the last man in 595. They had invaded the lands of the Slavs, who received help from the Kaghan (chief) of the Avars. Tassilo died in 610 and was succeeded by his son Garibald II.

- Father: Garibald I Herzog der Bajuwaren in BAIERN
- Mother: Waldrada von den Langobarden
- Birth: ABT 570, Stammesherzogtum Baiern
- Also known as: Theodelinda, Theudelinde
- Title Of Nobility: Queen of the Lombards
- Clan Name: Agilofinges (father); Lethingi (Mother)
- LifeSketch: After King Authari died in 590, the Lombard dukes asked Theodelinda to marry again. She chose Authari's cousin Agilulf as her husband, and he was accepted as the next king. Theodelinda also spelled Theudelinde (c. 570–628 AD), was a queen of the Lombards by marriage to two consecutive Lombard rulers, Autari and then Agilulf, and regent of Lombardia during the minority of her son Adaloald, and co-regent when he reached majority, from 616 to 626. For well over thirty years, she exercised influence across the Lombard realm, which comprised most of Italy between the Apennines and the Alps. Born a Frankish Catholic, she convinced her first spouse Autari to convert from pagan beliefs to Christianity. She was the daughter of duke Garibald I of Bavaria and Waldrada. Born a Bavarian princess to King Garibald, Theodelinda's heritage included being descended on her mother's side from the previous Lombard king, Waco, whose family had ruled seven generations prior according tradition. First marriage Theodelinda was married first in 588 to Authari, king of the Lombards, son of King Cleph. There are indications that Pope Gregory I may have had an interest in encouraging this marriage as it would tie a Bavarian Catholic with the Arian Lombards,[a] something he did previously, when he promoted the marriage between the Frankish princess Bertha—great-granddaughter of Clovis I—and the Kentish Aethelbehrt. Theodelinda's time with Authari was brief for he died in 590. Second marriage So highly esteemed across the Lombard kingdom was Theodelinda that when Authari died, she was asked to remain in power and to choose a successor. Historian Roger Collins has misgivings with the reliability of this claim—which stems from Paul the Deacon[b]—and instead, asserts that both political bargaining or naked force were more likely attributable to her choice. Whatever the real situation, a mere two months after Authari's death, Theodelinda picked Agilulf as her next husband and the two were wed.[c] She thereafter exerted much influence in restoring Nicene Christianity to a position of primacy in Italy against its rival, Arian Christianity. Her reach extended across most of the Italian peninsula between the Apennines and the Alps. While her husband Agilulf retained his Arian faith, he allowed his son with Theodelinda to be baptized a Catholic. The Lombard king faced trouble from his dukes, who were convinced that he had consigned himself instead to the faith of the conquered. Agilulf did not permit Theodelinda's faith to shape his policies against the Byzantines. Frequently, Theodelinda corresponded with Pope Gregory (590–604) in letters, some of which are recorded by the eighth-century historian, Paul the Deacon. Some of the content in these letters concerned her husband's conversion. To further promulgate the Christian faith of the Catholics, she also welcomed Catholic missionaries across her realm. Taking full advantage of her piety and possibly to incentivize her continued Catholic proclivities, Pope Gregory sent her a series of silver ampullas of Syro-Palestinian craftsmanship, a gospel casket, and a golden cross from Byzantium. The cross was gem-encrusted and was meant as a symbol of the "impending Kingdom of God".[d] Shortly before Agilulf's death in 616, he named Theodelinda co-regent for their son Adaloald and once he reached maturity, she remained co-ruler over the kingdom. For a period of some thirty-five years Theodelinda was queen of the Lombards. Perhaps to further exhibit her faith, she constructed a Catholic cathedral dedicated to St. John the Baptist at Monza (near Milan) and richly endowed it. Her support for the Catholic faith also included the establishment of monasteries—one at Bobbio, and later one at Pedona, among others according to Paul the Deacon. Within "the treasure house" that is the cathedral at Monza, one finds a splendidly detailed sculpture of a mother hen and her chicks made of gilded silver, which was likely another gift from Pope Gregory.[e]

- Birth: 535, Metz, Kingdom of Austrasia, Frankish Empire
- Title Of Nobility: King of the Austrasian Franks, BET 548 AND 555, Kingdom of Austrasia, Frankish Empire
- Lacked a strong constitution: He was sickly for most of his life and died of natural causes.
- LifeSketch: From Wikipedia- Theudebald or Theodebald (in modern English, Theobald; in French, Thibaut or Théodebald; in German, Theudowald) (c. 535–555), son of Theudebert I and Deuteria, was the king of Metz, Rheims, or Austrasia—as it's variously called—from 547 or 548 to 555. He was only thirteen years of age when he succeeded and of ill health. However, the loyalty of the nobility to his father's memory preserved the peace during his minority. He married Waldrada, daughter of the Lombard king Wacho and his step-aunt (a sister of his father's second wife). This marriage fortified the alliance between Austrasia and Lombardy. Nevertheless, Theudebald could not hold on to the conquests of his father in the north of Italia. The Byzantine Emperor Justinian I sent an army under the command of Narses in 552. The Franks who did not perish of want or plague in Apulia were defeated at Casilinum.[1] After a prolonged sickness and prostration, he died in 555. His realm passed finally outside of the family of Theuderic I and was united to the kingdoms of his granduncle Clotaire I, who would soon become king of all the Franks.[2] ****************************** Foundation for Medieval Genealogy THEODEBALD ([534]-555). Gregory of Tours names Theodebald as the son of Theodebert and his wife Deoteria, implying that he was born after his parents' marriage[82]. He succeeded his father in 547 as THEODEBALD I King of the Franks at Reims, "sous la régence de sa tante Theodechildis"[83]. Settipani does not provide the source reference on which he bases this last statement. On Theodebald’s death, his territory was taken by his great uncle King Clotaire. Gregory of Tours records that he had a stroke and could not move from the waist down, dying in the seventh year of his reign[84]. The Marii Episcopi Aventicensis Chronica records the death in 555 of "Theudebaldus rex Francorum"[85]. m ([554]) as her first husband, WALDRADA, daughter of WACHO King of the Lombards & his second wife Ostrogotha of the Gepides. The Origo Gentis Langobardorum names "Wisigarda…secundæ Walderada" as the two daughters of Wacho & his second wife, specifying that Waldrada married "Scusuald regis Francorum" and later "Garipald"[86]. The Historia Langobardorum names "Waldrada" as Wacho's second daughter by his second wife, specifying that she married "Chusubald rex Francorum"[87]. Paulus Diaconus names "Wisigarda…[et] secunda Walderada" as the two daughters of King Wacho and his second wife, specifying that Waldrada married "Cusupald alio regi Francorum" and later "Garipald"[88]. Gregory of Tours names "Vuldetrada" as the wife of King Theodebald[89]. Herimannus names "Wanderadam" wife of "Theodpaldus rex Francorum" when recording her second marriage to "Lotharius rex patris eius Theodeberti patruus"[90]. According to Gregory of Tours, King Clotaire "began to have intercourse" with the widow of King Theodebald before "the bishops complained and he handed her over to Garivald Duke of Bavaria"[91], which does not imply that Clotaire married Waldrada. She [married secondly], her first husband's great-uncle, Clotaire I King of the Franks, and thirdly (after 555) Garibald Duke in Bavaria.

Sister Chlotilde married King Adalric of Visigoths Theuderic I[a] (c. 485 – 533/4) was the Merovingian king of Metz, Rheims, or Austrasia—as it is variously called—from 511 to 533 or 534. He was the son of Clovis I and one of his earlier wives or concubines (possibly a Franco-Rhenish Princess, Evochildis of Cologne).[1] In accordance with Salian tradition, the kingdom was divided between Clovis's four surviving sons: Childebert I in Paris, Chlodomer in Orléans, and Clothar I in Soissons. Theuderic inherited Metz in 511 at his father's death. Early in his reign, he sent his son Theudebert to kill the Scandinavian King Chlochilaich (Hygelac of Beowulf fame) who had invaded his realm.[2] Theuderic got involved in the war between the Thuringian King Hermanfrid and his brother Baderic. Theuderic was promised half of Thuringia for his help; Baderic was defeated, but the land promised was not given up. In 531, Theuderic invaded Thuringia with the support of Clothar. Hermanfrid was killed in the invasion and his kingdom was annexed.[1] The four sons of Clovis then all fought the Burgundian kings Sigismund and Godomar; Godomar fled and Sigismund was taken prisoner by Chlodomer. Theuderic married Sigismund's daughter Suavegotha. Godomar rallied the Burgundian army and won back his kingdom. Chlodomer, aided by Theuderic, defeated Godomar, but died in the fighting at Vézeronce. Theuderic then, with his brother Clotaire and his son, attacked Thuringia to avenge himself on Hermanfrid. With the assistance of the Saxons under Duke Hadugato, Thuringia was conquered, and Clotaire received Radegund, daughter of King Berthar (Hermanfrid's late brother). After making a treaty with his brother Childebert, Theuderic died in 534. Upon his death the throne of Metz, passed (without hindrance, unexpectedly) to his son Theudebert. Theuderic also left a daughter Theodechild (by his wife Suavegotha, daughter of the defeated Sigismund of Burgundy). Theodechild founded the Abbey of St-Pierre le Vif at Sens.[3] From Encyclopedia Brittanica- Theuderic I, (born before 484—died late 533), Merovingian king of Reims from 511. Theuderic was the eldest son of Clovis I, but born of an unknown woman, unlike the other sons, whose mother was Clotilda. An able soldier, he played an important part in his father’s campaigns against the Visigoths. On Clovis’s death in 511 a fourfold division of his kingdom took place, each of his sons receiving some territories north of the Loire River and some to its south. No doubt as the most experienced of the four, Theuderic received those northern lands (the future Austrasia) most exposed to attack and the largest share overall; their axis was the Rhine. Already in his father’s lifetime, he had led military operations in southern Gaul. In the 520s Theuderic gained a share of his brother Clodomir’s kingdom when the dead king’s sons were murdered by Theuderic’s two other half brothers, Childebert and Chlotar. Theuderic campaigned with Clodomir against the Burgundians in 524. His greatest success lay in the subjection of the Thuringians, achieved with the help of Chlotar about 531. He collected tribute from the Saxons. As violent and unscrupulous as most of the other Merovingian rulers, Theuderic was arguably the most vigorous and effective of Clovis’s sons. He was succeeded by his son, Theudebert I.

Drusus Julius Caesar Germanicus (adopted) Names Tiberius Claudius Nero Tiberius Caesar Regnal name Tiberius Caesar Augustus Dynasty Julio-Claudian Father Tiberius Claudius Nero Augustus (adoptive) Mother Livia Tiberius was one of Rome's greatest generals: his conquests of Pannonia, Dalmatia, Raetia, and (temporarily) parts of Germania laid the foundations for the northern frontier. Even so, he came to be remembered as a dark, reclusive and somber ruler who never really desired to be emperor; Pliny the Elder called him "the gloomiest of men".[1] After the death of his son Drusus Julius Caesar in AD 23, Tiberius became more reclusive and aloof. In 26 AD he removed himself from Rome and left administration largely in the hands of his unscrupulous praetorian prefects Sejanus and Naevius Sutorius Macro. When Tiberius died, he was succeeded by his grand-nephew and adopted grandson, Caligula.[2] Background Tiberius was born in Rome on 16 November 42 BC to Tiberius Claudius Nero and Livia Drusilla.[3][4] In 39 BC, his mother divorced his biological father and, though again pregnant by Tiberius Nero, married Octavian. In 38 BC his brother, Nero Claudius Drusus, was born.[5] Little is recorded of Tiberius' early life. In 32 BC, Tiberius, at the age of nine, delivered the eulogy for his biological father at the rostra.[6] In 29 BC, he rode in the triumphal chariot along with his adoptive father Octavian in celebration of the defeat of Antony and Cleopatra at Actium.[6] In 23 BC, Emperor Augustus became gravely ill, and his possible death threatened to plunge the Roman world into chaos again. Historians generally agree that it is during this time that the question of Augustus' heir became most acute, and while Augustus had seemed to indicate that Agrippa and Marcellus would carry on his position in the event of his death, the ambiguity of succession became Augustus' chief problem.[7] In response, a series of potential heirs seem to have been selected, among them Tiberius and his brother Drusus. In 24 BC, at the age of seventeen, Tiberius entered politics under Augustus' direction, receiving the position of quaestor,[8] and was granted the right to stand for election as praetor and consul five years in advance of the age required by law.[9] Similar provisions were made for Drusus.[10]
