- Father: Uchtred of Bamburgh
- Mother: Ecgfrida ALDHUNSDOTTIR of Durham
- Birth: ABT 997, Bamburgh, Northumberland, England
- Also known as: Ealdred Uhtredsson
- Alt. Birth: ABT 997, Bamburgh, Northumberland, England
- AVENGED FATHER: When Thurbrand the Hold killed Uchtred in 1016 he started a Bloodfeud that lasted into the 1070'S. In the 1020's Ealdred avenged his father's death by killing Thurbrand, this did not end the feud but continued to fuel it., BET 1020 AND 1029, England
- Title Of Nobility: Ealdorman / Earl of Bernicia
- SLAIN IN BLOODFEUD: Ealdred was murdered in 1038 by Carl, son of Thurbrand the Hold in continuation of the Bloodfeud., 1038, Risewood Forest, Northumberlandshire, England
- LifeSketch: Ealdred of Bamburgh (also Ealdred II of Bamburgh and Ealdred Uhtredsson) was the oldest son of Uchtred of Bamburgh, Ealdorman of Northumbria and his 1st wife Ecgfrida, daughter of Bishop Aldhun of Durham, and was born about 997 (between 995 and 1006). Ealdred's parents divorced in 1006 and Ealdred likely grew up in the household of his grandfather Aldhun, the Bishop of Durham. Ealdred's mother remarried and gave him a little sister, Sigrid, but divorced a 2nd time (was repuidated) and finished out her life living with her father. Ealdred's father Uchtred married several more times, giving him at least 3 more siblings: Eadulf, Gospatrick, and Ealdgyth. His father Uchtred was killed in 1016 by Thurbrand the Hold, starting a blood feud that lasted many years and several generations. Ealdred's uncle Eadwulf Cudel was made Earl of Northumbria and upon his death in 1020 Ealdred succeeded him. In 1024 Ealdred killed Thurbrand the Hold in revenge for his father's death. In 1038 Ealdred was murdered by Thurbrand's son, Carl. He was succeeded as Earl of Bernicia by his 1/2 brother, Eadwulf. Although the name of his wife is not known, before his death Ealdred had 2 daughters: - Ealdgyth who married Ligulf of Lumley - Aelfflaed, second wife of Siward, Earl of Northumbria; and mother of Waltheof, Earl of Northumbria. The infamous Northumbrian Blood Feud was finally ended when Ealdred's grandson, Waltheof, had most of Carl's sons and grandsons killed in the 1070s.

Ealdred OF BAMBURGH Earl of Northumbria

- Birth: ABT 920, Bamburgh Castle, Bamburgh, Kingdom of Northumbria
- Also known as: Waltheof Osulfson
- Also known as: Waltheof Oswulfson
- Also known as: Waltheof Ealdredsson
- Also known as: Waltheof the Elder
- Also known as: Waltheof I of Bamburgh, Earldorman of Bamburgh
- Also known as: Waltheof Ealdorman of Bamburgh
- SEIGE OF DURHAM: Malcolm II beseiged Durham in 1006, Waltheof, being elderly, shut himself within his walls and did nothing, as did the other lords. Waltheof's son Uchtred rallied the men of the area and repelled Malcolm's forces, 1006, Durham, England
- DISPLACED BY SON UCHTRED: Following his decisive victory, King Æthelred promoted Uchtred to Ealdorman of all Northumbria, replacing his elderly father. This was not a punitive action, but a necessary one. At his 'advanced age' Waltheof was no longer capable of defending the area, a strong presence was needed. Waltheof remained alive, had the action been a punishment, Waltheof would have been executed and replaced., 1006, Northumbria, England
- LifeSketch: This is WALTHEOF OF BAMBURGH, high-reeve / ealdorman of Bamburgh. NOT THE SAME AS Waltheof of Northumbria! Waltheof of Bamburgh was high-reeve or ealdorman of Bamburgh (fl. 994 and died after 1006). He may have been son or grandson of Osulf I and was father of Uhtred the Bold, Ealdorman of Northumbria. His name is Scandinavian and implies that he had Viking ancestors. 'De Northumbria post Britannos' says that Osulf had a son named Ealdred, father of Waltheof of Bamburgh (fl. 994), father of Uhtred of Northumbria. The name 'Waltheof' remained in his family when Earl Siward married his great-granddaughter and named his son Waltheof. This son of Siward became Waltheof, Earl of Northumbria, and one of his descendant being Saint Waltheof of Melrose. Additionally, another branch of the family would use the Waltheof name including: Waltheof of Allerdale who was son of Gospatric, Earl of Northumbria. Waltheof of Inverkeithing and Dalmeny was son of Cospatric, and grandson of Waltheof of Allerdale. Another descendant of Gospatric, Earl of Northumbria was Waltheof, Earl of Dunbar. In 1006 Malcolm II of Scotland invaded Northumbria and besieged the newly founded episcopal city of Durham. At that time the Danes were raiding southern England and King Ethelred was unable to send help to the Northumbrians. Ealdorman Waltheof was too old to fight and remained in his castle at Bamburgh. Ealdorman Ælfhelm of York also took no action. Waltheof's son Uhtred, acting for his father, called together an army from Bernicia and Yorkshire and led it against the Scots. The result was a decisive victory for Uhtred. Local women washed the severed heads of the Scots, receiving a payment of a cow for each, and the heads were fixed on stakes to Durham's walls. Uhtred was rewarded by King Ethelred II with the ealdormanry of Bamburgh even though his father was still alive. IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT HE IS NOT THE SAME AS: - Waltheof of Northumbria - Saint Waltheof of Melrose - Waltheof of Allerdale - Waltheof of Inverkeithing and Dalmeny - Waltheof of Dunbar Who are all descendants of Waltheof of Bamburgh - from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waltheof_of_Bamburgh https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osulf_I_of_Bamburgh#Death_and_legacy

- HUSBAND KING EDGAR DIED, QUEEN DOWAGER ÆLFTHRYTH RETIRED TO CORFE: Edgar died in July 975, the widowed Ælfthryth was no longer Queen but "Queen Dowager". Her stepson Edward became king and Ælfthryth took her son Æthelred, now 2nd in line to the throne, and retired to the royal Castle at Corfe., 8 JUL 975, Winchester, Hampshire, England
- ACCUSED OF MURDERING HER STEP-SON, KING EDWARD: On 18 March 978, while visiting Ælfthryth at Corfe Castle, King Edward was killed by servants of the Queen, leaving the way clear for Æthelred to be installed as king.
- Regent Queen of England: Due to Æthelred's youth, Ælfthryth served as regent for her son until his coming of age in 984., BET 978 AND 984, Corfe Castle, Dorset, England
- REPORTED: England
- ÆLFTHRYTH NOT THE SAME AS ÆTHELFLÆD: Æthelflæd was the 1st wife of Edgar the Peaceful and daughter of Ordmaer, Ealdorman of the East Anglians; Ælfthryth was the 3rd wife of Edgar the Peaceful, the widow of Æthelwald, Ealdorman of East Anglia, and the daughter of Ordgar, Ealdorman of Devon in the West
- LifeSketch: ÆLFTHRYTH NOT THE SAME AS ÆTHELFLAED PLEASE TAKE CARE NOT TO CONFUSE THEM Ælfthryth (also Alfrida, Elfrida or Elfthryth) was an English queen, the third wife of King Edgar of England. Ælfthryth was the first king's wife known to have been crowned and anointed as Queen of the Kingdom of England. Mother of King Æthelred the Unready, she was a powerful political figure. She was possibly linked to the murder of her stepson King Edward the Martyr and appeared as a stereotypical bad queen and evil stepmother in many medieval histories. Ælfthryth was the daughter of Ealdorman Ordgar. Her mother was a member of the royal family of Wessex. The family's power lay in the west of Wessex. Ordgar was buried in Exeter and his son Ordwulf founded, or refounded, Tavistock Abbey. Ælfthryth was first married to Æthelwald, son of Æthelstan Half-King as recorded by Byrhtferth of Ramsey in his Life of Saint Oswald of Worcester. Later accounts, such as that preserved by William of Malmesbury, add vivid detail of unknown reliability. According to William, the beauty of Ordgar's daughter Ælfthryth was reported to King Edgar. Edgar, looking for a Queen, sent Æthelwald to see Ælfthryth, ordering him "to offer her marriage [to Edgar] if her beauty were really equal to report." When she turned out to be just as beautiful as was said, Æthelwald married her himself and reported back to Edgar that she was quite unsuitable. Edgar was eventually told of this, and decided to repay Æthelwald's betrayal in like manner. He said that he would visit the poor woman, which alarmed Æthelwald. He asked Ælfthryth to make herself as unattractive as possible for the king's visit, but she did the opposite. Edgar, quite besotted with her, killed Æthelwald during a hunt. The historical record does not record the year of Æthelwald's death, let alone its manner. No children of Æthelwald and Ælfthryth are known. Edgar had two children before he married Ælfthryth, both of uncertain legitimacy. Edward was probably the son of Æthelflæd, and Eadgifu, later known as Saint Edith of Wilton, was the daughter of Wulfthryth. Sound political reasons encouraged the match between Edgar, whose power base was centred in Mercia, and Ælfthryth, whose family were powerful in Wessex. In addition to this, and her link with the family of Æthelstan Half-King, Ælfthryth also appears to have been connected to the family of Ælfhere, Ealdorman of Mercia. Edgar married Ælfthryth in either 964 or 965. In 966 Ælfthryth gave birth to a son who was named Edmund. In King Edgar's charter (S 745) regranting privileges to New Minster, Winchester that same year, the infant Edmund is called "clito legitimus" (legitimate ætheling), and appears before Edward in the list of witnesses. Edmund died young, circa 970, but in 968 Ælfthryth had given birth to a second son who was called Æthelred. King Edgar organised a second coronation on 11 May 973 at Bath, perhaps to bolster his claim to be ruler of all of Britain. Here Ælfthryth was also crowned and anointed, granting her a status higher than any recent queen. The only model of a queen's coronation was that of Judith of Flanders, but this had taken place outside England. In the new rite, the emphasis lay on her role as protector of religion and the nunneries in the realm. She took a close interest in the well-being of several abbeys, and as overseer of Barking Abbey she deposed and later reinstated the abbess. Ælfthryth played a large role as forespeca, or advocate, in at least seven legal cases. As such, she formed a key part of the Anglo-Saxon legal system as a mediator between the individual and the crown, which was increasingly viewing its role in the courts as a symbol of its authority as protector of its subjects. Ælfthryth's actions as forespeca were largely for the benefit of female litigants, and her role as a mediator shows the possibilities for women to have legal and political power in late Anglo-Saxon England. Queen dowager Edgar died in 975 leaving two young sons, Edward and Æthelred. Edward was almost an adult, and his successful claim for the throne was supported by many key figures including Archbishops Dunstan and Oswald and the brother of Ælfthryth's first husband, Æthelwine, Ealdorman of East Anglia. Supporting the unsuccessful claim of Æthelred were his mother, the Queen dowager, Bishop Æthelwold of Winchester, and Ælfhere, Ealdorman of Mercia. On 18 March 978, while visiting Ælfthryth at Corfe Castle, King Edward was killed by servants of the Queen, leaving the way clear for Æthelred to be installed as king. Edward was soon considered a martyr, and later medieval accounts blamed Ælfthryth for his murder. According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, King Edward was murdered at Corfe Castle in 978. As the king developed into a cult figure, a body of literature grew up around his murder, at first implying and then accusing his step-mother, Queen Aelfthryth, of being responsible. The 12th century monastic chronicle the Liber Eliensis went so far as to accuse her of being a witch, claiming that she had murdered not only the king, but also Abbot Brihtnoth of Ely. Queen regent Due to Æthelred's youth, Ælfthryth served as regent for her son until his coming of age in 984. By then her earlier allies Æthelwold and Ælfhere had died, and Æthelred rebelled against his old advisers, preferring a group of younger nobility. Later life Ælfthryth disappears from the list of charter witnesses from around 983 to 993, when she reappears in a lower position. She remained an important figure, being responsible for the care of Æthelred's children by his first wife, Ælfgifu. Æthelred's eldest son, Æthelstan Ætheling, prayed for the soul of the grandmother "who brought me up" in his will in 1014. Although her reputation was damaged by the murder of her stepson, Ælfthryth was a religious woman, taking an especial interest in monastic reform when Queen. In about 986 she founded Wherwell Abbey in Hampshire as a Benedictine nunnery, and late in life she retired there. In about 979, Ælfthryth had founded Amesbury Abbey. The date is given by the Chronicle of Melrose appropriate. Antonia Gransden comments: "In their patronage of the monks both Cnut and Edward the Confessor were supported by their queens, Emma and Edith, who were worthy successors of Edgar's queen, Ælfthryth, as patronesses of the religious." She died at Wherwell on 17 November 999, 1000 or 1001. FROM: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%86lfthryth_(wife_of_Edgar)

While the symbol was found in insular art and even showed up in the Book of Kells, it was almost never seen by itself alone in the medieval Celtic language. For the Druids, it represented the natural forces of earth, air, and water. On a more spiritual level, it has been known to symbolize life, death, and rebirth.. the meaning varies from aspects of spirit, nature, being-ness, and of the cosmos. The origin of this symbol has been an issue of controversy for centuries. Christians feel that it started with the Monks, who brought these designs along with their teachings of Christianity when attempting to convert the Celts of the day. However, it’s been common practice for Christianity to adopt ancient pagan symbols and rituals into its own belief system, making it a very good possibility that the original symbol was indeed Celtic to begin with. http://www.aohflorida.org/celtic-symbols-pdf/

He led the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire (167–160 BCE). - LifeSketch: Foundation for Medieval Genealogy ii) ÆTHELBERHT (-[664/73], bur Romsey Abbey308). William of Malmesbury names "Ethelred" and "Egelbirt" as sons of King Ecgberht's uncle Eormenred, recording that the brothers were kept at the court of their cousin Ecgberht King of Kent but later murdered on his orders[311]. ***************** Wikipedia Saints Æthelred and Æthelberht (also Ethelred, Ethelbert) according to the Kentish royal legend (attested in the 11th century) were princes of the Kingdom of Kent who were murdered in around AD 669, and later commemorated as saints and martyrs. Their story forms an important element in the legend of Saint Mildrith, because the monastery of Minster in Thanet is said to have been founded in atonement for the crime. Historical context King Eorcenberht of Kent seized the rule of Kent in 640 in precedence to his elder brother Eormenred. Both were sons of Eadbald of Kent (r. c. 616–640). The legend, contained in a Latin Passio, tells that Eormenred and his wife Oslafa had several children including the two sons Aethelred and Aethelberht, and a daughter Eormenbeorg, also known as Domne Eafe. Eafe married Merewalh, ruler of the Maegonsaetan, a people situated in the west Midlands in the Shropshire area. King Eorcenberht married Seaxburh, daughter of King Anna of East Anglia, and ruled as a Christian king: he was the first ruler to order the abandonment and destruction of idols throughout his kingdom, and to establish the forty days' fast of Lent to be observed by royal authority (Bede, Ecclesiastical History iii,8). He had two sons, Ecgberht and Hlothhere, and two daughters, Eormenhild and Eorcongota. On Eorconberht's death of the plague in 664, Ecgberht succeeded him as King of Kent. The legend Main article: Kentish Royal Legend See also: Domne Eafe § The legend According to the legend, the princes were very pious Christian youths and lived at Eastry, Kent, at a royal dwelling belonging to their cousin King Egberht. (It is likely that such a residence existed, for Sir Frank Stenton pointed out that the placename Eastry, comparable to Surrey in formation, represented an early administrative centre.) A royal retainer named Thunor wished to secure the succession of King Ecgberht from a possible rival claim by these youths. He therefore had them secretly murdered, and their bodies hidden beneath the royal seat in the Hall at Eastry. After they were missed, but nowhere found, the crime was revealed by a column of light which appeared shining above the place of concealment. When King Egberht learned of the crime he was filled with sorrow and remorse at the act which had been done in his name, and planned to have the bodies buried at Canterbury. However, the people charged with the task of taking the bodies there found it impossible to move them. After these efforts the king took advice from his religious leaders, who recommended that he have them taken to Wakering in the Kingdom of Essex for burial, where a monastery already existed. The site was probably Great Wakering, not many miles away from the possibly royal burial-site of Prittlewell, Essex. With this new destination the bodies consented to be moved, and were venerated in their final resting-place as royal Christian martyrs. At about this time Egberht's mother Queen Seaxburh founded her own double monastery at Minster in Sheppey, on the south bank of the Thames Estuary nearly opposite Wakering. The monastery at Reculver was founded in 669. Ecgberht then founded the monastery of Minster in Thanet, to be ruled over by the sister of the murdered princes. She was the mother of Saint Mildrith, who afterwards succeeded her as abbess. Some sources also claim that another monastery was established at Eastry for the same reason, over which a sister of Mildrith's ruled as abbess. Another sister, Mildburg, remained among the Magonsaetan and governed the monastery of Much Wenlock in Shropshire. In addition to the Latin Passio (edited by David Rollason) a version of the story appears in Roger of Wendover's Flores Historiarum (Flowers of History), compiled in the early thirteenth century. Excavations at Great Wakering have recently uncovered a site of Middle Saxon occupation including a fragment of ornamented stone-sculpture, which may derive from the place named in the legend.

"Æthelbertus filius regis Wihtredi" granted property to abbess Mildred by charter dated 11 Jul 724, consented to by "Eadbertus ad petitionem germani sui Æthelberti"[374]. He succeeded his father in 725 as ÆTHELBERHT II joint King of Kent, ruling jointly with his brother Eadberht. Yorke says that, according to charter evidence, Æthelberht was the older of the two brothers[375], but this is not apparent from the charters referred to below. "Æthilberht rex Cantuariorum" granted fishing rights and land at Broomhill, Kent to the abbey of Lyminge St Mary by charter dated 741[376]. "Æthilberchtus rex Cantie" subscribed a charter of "Eardulfus rex Cantuariorum" dated 748 which granted land in Kent to the church of Rochester St Andrew's[377]. He continued to rule after the death of his brother Eadberht. "Æthilbertus rex Cantiæ" wrote to Boniface, dated [748/54][378]. "Æthilberhctus rex Cantie" exchanged pasture rights for use of a mill with St Augustine's, Canterbury, by charter dated 762[379]. Canterbury was burned during his reign. _____________________________________________________ Æthelbert II (Old English: Æðelberht; 725–762) was king of Kent. Upon the death of his father Wihtred, the kingdom was ruled by his three sons, Æthelbert II, Eadberht I and Alric. Æthelbert seems to have outlived both of his brothers and later reigned jointly with his nephew Eardwulf. He died in 762, according to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle (recorded under 760 due to chronological dislocation). He seems to have left a son, Eadberht II. He issued a charter before his accession, dated 11 July 724, that was witnessed by his father. As king he issued further charters, confirmed a charter of his brother Eadberht I, and witnessed a charter of his nephew Eardwulf. During the latter half of Æthelberht II's rule, Kent was under the overlordship of Mercia, but Æthelberht II maintained his position as king. *wikipedia _____________________________________________________ Foundation for Medieval Genealogy EALRICH (-after 762). Bede names "Aedilberctum, Eadberctum et Alricum" as the three sons of "Uictred filius Ecgberti rex Cantuariorum"[391]. "Ælrico filio nostro" subscribed his parents' charter dated 699[392]. He succeeded his brother in 762 as EALRICH joint King of Kent. According to William of Malmesbury[393], King Ealrich reigned for thirty four years but this seems unlikely given the likely birth dates of the sons of King Wihtred. _____________________________________________ Alric (Old English: Alrīc; 8th century) was a king of the Saxon kingdom of Kent, jointly with Æðelberht II and Eadberht I. Alric acceded with his two brothers on the death of his father Wihtred, according to Bede, but is otherwise unknown. Kelly observed that the reign of 762 to 796 attributed to him by William of Malmesbury “is evidently fantasy, inspired by a desire to account neatly for all the brothers mentioned by Bede”. *wikipedia _____________

- 3RD WIFE OF EDWARD THE ELDER: (Date and Place unknown)
- LifeSketch: Eadgifu of Kent was the daughter of Sigehelm, Ealdorman of Kent. She was born in 903 or before. Her father died at the Battle of the Holme in 902, either when she was an infant or shortly before her birth. Eadgifu (also Edgiva or Ediva) married Edward the Elder, King of the English, about 919, becoming his 3rd wife and Queen of the English. Edward was considerably older than her (about 29 years) and began his reign as king in 899, before Eadgifu was even born. Together they had 3 children: - Edmund I of England, later King Edmund I - Eadred of England, later King Eadred - Saint Eadburh of Winchester A 4th child mentioned, a daughter named Eadgifu, is likely the same Eadgifu born to Edward's 2nd wife Ælfflæd, who would have still been young, under age, when Eadgifu became her step-mother. Edward died in 924, leaving Eadgifu with small children. Eadgifu herself survived Edward by over 40 years, dying during the reign of her grandson Edgar. Æthelstan became king in 924, after the death of his father and brother, and during his 15 year reign Eadgifu is not recorded. Dowager Queen Eadgifu and her children likely remained at court, for her stepson King Æthelstan striped her of her properties in Cooling, and her children would have still needed the education due young princes. Æthelstan died in 939 and Eadgifu's oldest son Edmund became king. During his reign, his mother, the Dowager Queen, was held in high regard, even above his own wives. Eadgifu survived all of her children, King Edmund the Magnificent who died in 946, King Eadred succeeded his brother but died in 955 at which time the throne went to Edmund's son Eadwig. Her daughter Eadburgh died in 960. Eadgifu's oldest grandson King Eadwig succeeded to the throne in 955. Apparently Eadgifu favored his younger brother Edgar, for King Eadwig deprived his grandmother of her lands. He died in 959 and was succeeded by his younger brother King Edgar the Peaceful. King Edgar restored his grandmother's properties and is said to have gifted her lavishly. Dowager Queen Eadgifu is last documented on 966 witnessing a charter and died sometime thereafter. During her lifetime Eadgifu saw the reign of 7 kings: her husband King Edward, stepsons King Ælfweard and King Æthelstan, her sons King Edmund and King Eadred, her grandsons King Eadwig and King Eadgar. She was known as a supporter of saintly churchmen and a benefactor of churches. From website: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eadgifu_of_Kent

- LifeSketch: Wikipedia Saint Eormenhild (or Ermenilda, Ermenildis, Ermengild, all meaning "battle-great", from eormen- "great", hild- "battle") (d. about 700/703) is a 7th-century Anglo-Saxon saint venerated in the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches. Life She features in the genealogies of various 11th and 12th century versions of the Kentish Royal Legend. These describe her as the daughter of King Eorcenberht of Kent and St. Seaxburh of Ely, and wife to Wulfhere of Mercia,[1] with whom she had a daughter, St. Wærburh, and a son, Coenred. Eormenhild became a nun after her husband died in 675, and eventually became abbess of Minster-in-Sheppey and Ely consecutively. There are almost no contemporary records for her life. When discussing Wulfhere, Bede mentions neither she nor her daughter Wærburh. However, her name is mentioned as an abbess in a (copy of a) charter of King Wihtred of Kent, dated 699, along with three other abbesses present at the occasion when the charter was issued: "Irminburga, Aeaba et Nerienda".[2] Her feast day is 13 February.

- Hlothere: It is not know precisely when it happens, but by the later years of his reign, Hlothere controls Lundenwic (London), the first Kentish king to do so since 616. He maintains a hall there and his presence suggests that he has also regained Suthrige for Kent. By this time he has also agreed to share power with his dispossessed and ambitious nephew, Eadric. This is the first time that such an experiment has been attempted in the kingdom, and it leads to disaster.
- LifeSketch: Hlothhere (Old English: Hloþhere; died 6 February 685) was a King of Kent who ruled from 673 to 685. He succeeded his brother Ecgberht I in 673. He must have come into conflict with Mercia, since in 676 the Mercian king Æthelred invaded Kent and caused great destruction; according to Bede, even churches and monasteries were not spared, and Rochester was laid waste. Hlothhere's rule survived this onslaught, however. He appears for a time to have reigned jointly with his nephew Eadric, son of Ecgberht I, since a code of laws still extant was issued under both their names. In 685, Eadric went into exile and led the South Saxons against Hlothhere, who was defeated and died of his wounds. The above information is derived from Bede, but Hlothhere is the earliest Kentish king for whom genuine charters survive. One charter known from a 15th-century copy, is precisely dated to 1 April 675 in the first year of Hlothhere's reign, which conflicts with accession date attributed to him by Bede. The charter of 679 survives in its original form. Two further charters attributed to Hlothere (S1648, S1648a), appear to have been altered copies of charters of Swæfheard (S10) and Swæfberht (S11) (Kelly 1995). A law code, the Law of Hlothhere and Eadric, is jointly attributed to him and his successor Eadric.

- Occupation: Duchess Consort of Poland, BET 1040 AND 1058, Poland
- LifeSketch: Maria Dobroniega of Kiev (b. aft. 1012 – d. 1087), was a Kievian Rus princess of the Rurikid dynasty and by marriage Duchess of Poland. She was one of the younger children of Vladimir I, Grand Prince of Kiev. The identity of her mother is disputed among historians and web sources. Grand Prince Vladimir I had married seven times and had fathered many children, legitimate and illegitimate. Anna Porphyrogeneta, his sixth wife, is known to have predeceased Vladimir by four years. Chronicle Thietmar of Merseburg, writing from contemporary accounts, mentions that Boleslaw I of Poland captured Vladimir I's widow during his raid on Kiev in 1018. The historians long had no clue as to identity of this wife. The emigre historian Nicholas Baumgarten, however, pointed to the controversial record of the "Genealogia Welforum" and the "Historia Welforum Weingartensis" that one daughter of Count Kuno von Oenningen (future Duke Konrad I of Swabia) by "filia Ottonis Magni imperatoris" (Otto the Great's daughter; possibly Rechlinda Otona [Regelindis], claimed by some as illegitimate daughter and by others legitimate, born from his first marriage with Edith of England) married "rex Rugorum" (King of Rus). He interpreted this evidence as pertaining to Vladimir I's last wife. This woman is a possible identity for Maria's mother. Marriage[edit] Maria married around 1040 to Casimir I the Restorer, Duke of Poland. This marriage helped Casimir to gain support in his reclaim over the Polish throne. Casimir had attempted to seize the throne twice before, both times he failed. With the support of Maria's brother, Yaroslav I the Wise, Casimir was able to make a successful claim. The couple had five children: Bolesław II the Bold (b. c. 1043 – d. 2/3 April 1081/82). Władysław I Herman (b. c. 1044 – d. 4 June 1102) Mieszko (b. 16 April 1045 – d. 28 January 1065). Otto (b. c. 1046 – d. 1048). Świętosława (b. c. 1048 – d. 1 September 1126), married c. 1062 to Duke (and since 1085 King) Vratislaus II of Bohemia. Maria's husband died on 28 November 1058. Her sixteen-year-old son, Bolesław, became King of Poland. Bolesław II is considered one of the most capable of the Piast rulers. However, he was deposed & expelled from the country in 1079. Bolesław II died two years later, in 1081. Maria survived her son by six years, dying in 1087, aged seventy-six or seventy-seven.
