Jedoch veranlasste Ludwigs Halbbruder Drogo als Bischof von Metz, dass Ludwig der Fromme in der Abtei St. Arnulf in Metz beigesetzt wurde, wo auch seine Mutter Hildegard und andere Karolinger bestattet worden waren Louis the Pious (778 – 20 June 840), also called the Fair, and the Debonaire,[1] was the King of the Franks and co-emperor with his father, Charlemagne, from 813. He was also King of Aquitaine from 781. As the only surviving son of Charlemagne and Hildegard, he became the sole ruler of the Franks after his father's death in 814, a position which he held until his death, save for the period 833–34, during which he was deposed. During his reign in Aquitaine, Louis was charged with the defence of the empire's southwestern frontier. He conquered Barcelona from the Muslims in 801 and asserted Frankish authority over Pamplona and the Basques south of the Pyrenees in 812. As emperor he included his adult sons, Lothair, Pepin, and Louis, in the government and sought to establish a suitable division of the realm among them. The first decade of his reign was characterised by several tragedies and embarrassments, notably the brutal treatment of his nephew Bernard of Italy, for which Louis atoned in a public act of self-debasement. In the 830s his empire was torn by civil war between his sons, only exacerbated by Louis's attempts to include his son Charles by his second wife in the succession plans. Though his reign ended on a high note, with order largely restored to his empire, it was followed by three years of civil war. Louis is generally compared unfavourably to his father, though the problems he faced were of a distinctly different sort. --Wikipedia

- LifeSketch: 17 November 1732, John Kankey and Anna his wife sold to William Husbands (John's brother-in-law) for one hundred pounds "all that tract of land lying in sd county and part of a certain tract of land called the levell." (See Cecil County Land Records, Liber 4, p. 226) On the 18th of November 1732, Zebulon Hollingsworth and Catherine his wife sold to John Kinkey for thirty-five pounds, "a half part of all that parcel of land or tenement that the said Zebulon Hollingsworth purchased of Elias Everson and Mary his wife...beginning at a marked beach tree...standing on the East side of the North East branch of the Elk River...a little below the mouth of an old mill ditch and below the county road..." John Kankey brought 160 acres of land from Theophilus Ivory of New England, mariner, on April 8, 1735. He paid one hundred pounds for part of St. John's Manor. (See Cecil County Land Records, Liber 5, p. 98). On the 2nd of December 1742, Wiliiam Bristow and Catherine, his wife, [John's sister and brother-in-law] sold John Kankey one half-part of a parcel of land with half the corn mill and half the saw mill. It was part of the land that Zebulon Hollingsworth brought from Elias Everson and Mary his wife. The land was located on the "East side of the North West Branch of Elk River near head of tide, a little below the mouth of an Old Mill Ditch..." Witnesses were John Hyland and Richard Dobson. (See Cecil County Land Records Liber 5, p. 208) This purchase gave them the other half of the mill they had bought in 1732 from Zebulon Hollingsworth. On the 17th November 1743, Joseph Sawman, planter sold to John Kankey, planter, for one hundred and fifty pounds"all that tract of land on the North side of Elk River...beginning at an old corner Spanish oak standing on a part of land called Plumb Point..." 500 acres commonly called "Bretton". - Defeated in Battle: 568 Æthelbert is defeated in battle by Ceawlin of the West Seaxe at Wibbandun. This is notable as being the first recorded conflict between two groups of invaders, rather than a battle against the native British. The location of 'Wibbandun', which can be translated as 'Wibba's Mount', has not been definitely identified. At one time it was thought to be Wimbledon, but this is now known to be incorrect. Instead it seems likely that the battle takes place near the boundary between Hampshire and Berkshire, probably disputed territory between Kent and the West Seaxe., 568, Wibbandun, West Seaxe, England

The eighth-century monk Bede, in his Ecclesiastical History of the English People, lists him as the third king to hold imperium over other Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. In the late ninth century Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, he is referred to as a bretwalda, or "Britain-ruler". He was the first English king to convert to Christianity. Æthelberht was the son of Eormenric, succeeding him as king, according to the Chronicle. He married Bertha, the Christian daughter of Charibert, king of the Franks, thus building an alliance with the most powerful state in contemporary Western Europe; the marriage probably took place before he came to the throne. Bertha's influence may have led to Pope Gregory I's decision to send Augustine as a missionary from Rome. Augustine landed on the Isle of Thanet in east Kent in 597. Shortly thereafter, Æthelberht converted to Christianity, churches were established, and wider-scale conversion to Christianity began in the kingdom. He provided the new church with land in Canterbury, thus establishing one of the foundation stones of what ultimately became the Anglican Communion. Æthelberht's law for Kent, the earliest written code in any Germanic language, instituted a complex system of fines; the law code is preserved in the Textus Roffensis. Kent was rich, with strong trade ties to the continent, and Æthelberht may have instituted royal control over trade. Coinage probably began circulating in Kent during his reign for the first time since the Anglo-Saxon settlement. He later came to be regarded as a saint for his role in establishing Christianity among the Anglo-Saxons. His feast day was originally 24 February but was changed to 25 February.

- LifeSketch: Æthelstan was the oldest son of King Æthelwulf of Wessex, and his first wife Osberga. Æthelstan is found living from 839 to 851 and is believed to have been born about 827. When Æthelwulf succeed as King of Wessex in 839, he appointed his oldest son Æthelstan to be King of Kent. Æthelstan served as king under his father's authority and overlordship until 851. He never succeeded his father as King of Wessex because he died before his father. ** IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE: That Æthelstan is sometimes identified as the son of Æthelwulf, and at other times identified as the son of Ecgberht, and therefore Æthelwulf's younger brother. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle versions A, B, and C identify Æthelstan as a son of Æthelwulf (therefore Ecgberht's grandson), while versions D, E, and F make Æthelstan the "other" son of Ecgberht. The chronicler Æthelweard clearly states that Æthelstan was a son of Æthelwulf, as does William of Malmesbury and John of Worcester. Æthelstan appears in charters from 839 to 850. Most of those charters do not identify his paternity, but the few that do identify him as the son of Æthelwulf. Historians and scholars currently agree that he was more likely to have been the son of Æthelwulf and Ecgberht's grandson. If the charters are accepted as legitimate, then he was definitively the son of Æthelstan** [*** THIS King Æthelstan of Kent is not to be confused with the King Æthelstan of East Anglia, who minted coins. These two Æthelstans are entirely different people. ***] King Æthelstan of Kent with Ealhhere, Ealdorman of Kent, defeated a Viking fleet off the coast of Sandwich, Kent, in 851. The Battle of Sandwich was "the first naval battle in recorded English history". The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records: "...And the same year king Athelstan and Elchere the ealdormen fought on shipboard, and slew a great number of the enemy at Sandwich in Kent, and took nine ships, and put the others to flight; and the heathen men, for the first time, remained over winter in Thanet." This is the last record of Æthelstan. Ealhhere met a Viking host again in Kent 2 years later in 853. The Kentish army, along with Earl Huda and the men of Surry, suffered a disastrous defeat in which Ealhhere died. There was no mention of Æthelstan and it is believed he was dead before this battle occurred. Additionally, when his father Æthelwulf went to Rome in 855, he made arrangements for the governance of his kingdom while he was gone. Æthelstan was not included in these plans. The last charter associated with Æthelstan was in 850, and the last mention of him was the 851 naval battle. It is believed he died in 851 sometime after the Battle of Sandwich. His burial place is not known with certainty, however, a royal grave dating to the 9th century was excavated at the Old Minster, Winchester, and is strongly believed to be Æthelstan. There is no record of Æthelstan marrying or having any children. --------------- Æthelstan (/ˈæθəlstæn/; died c. 852) was the King of Kent from 839 to 851. He served under the authority and overlordship of his father, King Æthelwulf of Wessex, who appointed him. The late D, E and F versions of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle describe Æthelstan as Æthelwulf's brother, but the A, B and C versions, and Æthelweard's Chronicon, state that he was Æthelwulf's son. Some historians have argued that it is more probable that he was a brother, including Eric John in 1966 and Ann Williams in 1978. However, in 1991 Ann Williams described him as Æthelwulf's son, and this is now generally accepted by historians, including Frank Stenton, Barbara Yorke, and D. P. Kirby. When Æthelwulf became King of the West Saxons in 839 on the death of his father, Egbert, he appointed Æthelstan to rule over Kent, Essex, Surrey and Sussex. He is styled king in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and Æthelweard's chronicle calls him "King of the Dwellers in Kent, of the East Saxons, of the South Saxons and of Surrey". He attested a number of his father's charters as king in the 840s. In 851, Æthelstan and Ealdorman Ealhhere defeated a Viking fleet and army off Sandwich, Kent, described by Frank Stenton as "the first naval battle in recorded English history". Æthelstan is not mentioned after 851 and presumably died before Æthelwulf went to Rome in 855 as he was not included in arrangements for government of the kingdom during his father's absence. In 853 Ealhhere died in a disastrous defeat of the men of Kent and Surrey by the Vikings, and as Æthelstan is not mentioned as present at the battle he was probably dead by then. - Eadbald becomes King of Kent: Eadbald's claim of overlordship over the East Seaxe is rejected by his three cousins who become joint kings there at the same time as Eadbald becomes king of the Cantware. The loss also means that the Middel Seaxe are removed from Kentish control. However, Eadbald is quickly converted to Christianity and takes a Frankish wife, and Kent remains a beleaguered bridgehead of the Roman world in England.

Earcobeorht, King of Kent+1 d. 14 Jul 664 Eormenred (?)+1 Eanswith (?)3 Eadbald (Old English: Ēadbald) was King of Kent from 616 until his death in 640. He was the son of King Æthelberht and his wife Bertha, a daughter of the Merovingian king Charibert.[1] Æthelberht made Kent the dominant force in England during his reign and became the first Anglo-Saxon king to convert to Christianity from Anglo-Saxon paganism. Eadbald's accession was a significant setback for the growth of the church, since he retained his people's paganism and did not convert to Christianity for at least a year, and perhaps for as much as eight years. He was ultimately converted by either Laurentius or Justus, and separated from his first wife, who had been his stepmother, at the insistence of the church. Eadbald's second wife was Emma, who may have been a Frankish princess. She bore him two sons, Eormenred and Eorcenberht, and a daughter, Eanswith. Eadbald's influence was less than his father's, but Kent was powerful enough to be omitted from the list of kingdoms dominated by Edwin of Northumbria. Edwin's marriage to Eadbald's sister, Æthelburg, established a good relationship between Kent and Northumbria which appears to have continued into Oswald's reign. When Æthelburg fled to Kent on Edwin's death in about 633, she sent her children to Francia for safety, fearing the intrigues of both Eadbald and Oswald. The Kentish royal line made several strong diplomatic marriages over the succeeding years, including the marriage of Eanflæd, Eadbald's niece, to Oswiu, and of Eorcenberht to Seaxburh, daughter of King Anna of East Anglia. Eadbald died in 640 and was buried in the Church of St Mary, which he had built in the precincts of the monastery of St Peter and St Paul in Canterbury (a church later incorporated within the Norman edifice of St Augustine's).[1] At that time, his relics were translated for reburial in the south transept ca. A.D. 1087.[2] He was succeeded by Eorcenberht. Eormenred may have been his oldest son, but if he reigned at all it was only as a junior king. Early Kent and early sources The state of Anglo-Saxon England at about the time of Eadbald's birth Settlement of Kent by continental peoples, primarily Jutes, was complete by the end of the sixth century.[3] Eadbald's father, Æthelberht, probably came to the throne in about 589 or 590, though the chronology of his reign is very difficult to determine accurately.[4] Æthelberht was recorded by the early chronicler Bede as having overlordship, or imperium, over other Anglo-Saxon kingdoms.[5] This dominance led to wealth in the form of tribute, and Kent was a powerful kingdom at the time of Æthelberht's death in 616, with trade well-established with the European mainland.[6] Roman Britain had become fully Christianized, but the Anglo-Saxons retained their native faith. In 597 Augustine was sent by Pope Gregory I to England to convert them to Christianity. Augustine landed in eastern Kent, and soon managed to convert Æthelberht, who gave Augustine land in Canterbury. Two other rulers, Sæberht, king of Essex, and Rædwald, king of East Anglia, were converted through Æthelberht's influence.[7][8] An important source for this period in Kentish history is The Ecclesiastical History of the English People, written in 731 by Bede, a Benedictine monk from Northumbria. Bede was primarily interested in the Christianization of England, but he also provides substantial information about secular history, including the reigns of Æthelberht and Eadbald. One of Bede's correspondents was Albinus, abbot of the monastery of St. Peter and St. Paul (subsequently renamed St. Augustine's) in Canterbury. A series of related texts known as the Legend of St Mildrith provides additional information about events in the lives of Eadbald's children and throws some light on Eadbald himself. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, a collection of annals assembled in about 890 in the kingdom of Wessex, also provides information. Other sources include papal letters, regnal lists of the kings of Kent, and early charters. Charters were documents drawn up to record grants of land by kings to their followers or to the church, and they provide some of the earliest documentary sources in England. None survive in original form from Eadbald's reign, but some later copies exist.[9] Ancestry and immediate family Eadbald's ancestry and siblings The ancestry of Æthelberht, Eadbald's father, is given by Bede, who states that he was descended from the legendary founder of Kent, Hengist. However, historians believe that Hengist and his brother Horsa were probably mythical figures.[10] It is known that Æthelberht married twice as Eadbald married his step-mother after his father's death, to the consternation of the church.[11] Eadbald had a sister, Æthelburg, who was probably also the child of Bertha. Æthelburg married Edwin, King of Northumbria, one of the dominant Anglo-Saxon kings of the seventh century. It is possible that there was another brother, named Æthelwald:[12] the evidence for this is a papal letter to Justus, archbishop of Canterbury from 619 to 625, in which a king named Aduluald is referred to, and who is apparently different from Audubald, which refers to Eadbald. There is no agreement among modern scholars on how to interpret this: "Aduluald" might be intended as a representation of "Æthelwald", and hence this may be an indication of another king, perhaps a subking of west Kent;[13] or it may be merely a scribal error which should be read as referring to Eadbald.[14] Archbishop Laurence of Canterbury persuaded Eadbald to accept Christianity and give up his wife.[1] He then remarried, and his second wife, according to Kentish tradition recorded in the 'Kentish Royal Legend', was a woman named Ymme of Frankish royal blood, though recently it has been suggested that she may have instead been the daughter of Erchinoald, mayor of the palace in Neustria, the western part of Francia.[15][16] East and West Kent The surviving regnal lists show only one king reigning at a time in Kent, but subkingdoms were common among the Anglo-Saxons and from the reign of Hlothhere, in the late seventh century, there is evidence that Kent was usually ruled by two kings, though often one is clearly dominant. It is less clear that this is the case before Hlothhere. Forged charters preserve a tradition of Eadbald ruling during his father's reign, presumably as a subking over west Kent. The papal letter that has been interpreted as indicating the existence of Æthelwald, a brother of Eadbald's, refers to Æthelwald as a king; if he existed, he would presumably have been a junior king to Eadbald.[13] The two kingdoms within Kent were east and west Kent. Western Kent has fewer archaeological finds from the earliest periods than east Kent, and the eastern finds are somewhat distinct in character, showing Jutish and Frankish influence. The archaeological evidence, combined with the known political division into two kingdoms, makes it likely that the origin of the subkingdoms was the conquest of the western half by the eastern, which would have been the first area settled by the invaders.[17]

- LifeSketch: Eadric, King of Kent was the son of Ecgbeorht I, King of Kent.1 He died circa August 686. He was also reported to have died on 31 August 687. He succeeded as the King Eadric of Kent in 685. The charter of 679 infers that, at that date, the relationship between Eadric and his uncle were not unfriendly, however in about 685 Eadric revolted against his uncle. With help from Æthelwealh of Sussex he raised a South Saxon army and defeated Hlothhere in battle. Hlothhere died of his wounds shortly after and Eadric became sole ruler of Kent. Eadric was a nephew of Wulfhere of Mercia. Wulfhere was in an alliance with the South Saxons, so it would have served the politics of the time for Æthelwealh to support Eadric's coup against Hlothhere. Also, in 685 a West Saxon warband invaded Sussex under the command of the Wessex prince Cædwalla and killed Æthelwealh. Cædwalla was subsequently driven out of Sussex by two of Æthelwealh's ealdormen, Berhthun and Andhun. William of Malmesbury suggests that Eadric became king of the South Saxon kingdom at that time. Then in 686, Cædwalla, now king of Wesssex, and his brother Mul, removed Eadric from power and made Mul king of Kent. Cædwalla's hatred and hostility towards the South Saxons were inextinguishable, and he totally destroyed Edric [Eadric] the successor of Ethelwalch [Æthelwealh] who opposed him with renovated boldness:....he also gained repeated victories over the people of Kent.. — William of Malmesbury 1847, pp. 30-31 There is a discussion on the actual date of Eadric's death. Bede lists his death, but does not provide a precise date, however one of the Kent annals, suggest that he was buried on 31 August 686 and another 31 August 687. ___________________________________________________ NOTE: Eadric and Wihtred were brothers, they are not the same person! Foundation for Medieval Genealogy EADRIC ([668]-31 Aug 687). Bede names "Edric filius Ecgberti" when recording his rebellion against his uncle King Hlothhere[359]. He consented to a grant of land in Thanet by his uncle King Hlothhere to Abbot Brihtwold in 679[360]. If Eadric's estimated birth date is correct, he was little more than an adolescent at the time of his rebellion. However, it is unlikely that he was born much earlier than this in view of the estimated birth date of his paternal grandmother. Bede records that "Hlotheri Cantuariorum rex" was mortally wounded "in pugna Australium Saxonum" against "Edric filius Ecgberti", adding that the latter succeeded his king but died one year later[361]. He defeated his uncle, presumably with support from the South Saxons, and succeeded in 685 as EADRIC King of Kent. "Eadricus rex Cantuariorum" granted land at Stodmarsh, Kent to St Augustine by charter dated Jun 686[362]. Cædwalla King of Wessex invaded Kent in 686 and installed his brother Mul as King of Kent, although the latter was burned to death with twelve followers by the Kentishmen the following year[363]. The Annales Lindisfarnenses et Cantuarienses record the death "687 II Kal Sep" of "Edric Cantuariorum rex"[364].

- LifeSketch: Ealhmund was King of Kent in 784. He is reputed to be the father of King Egbert who was King of Wessex and, later, King of Kent. He is not known to have struck any coins, and the only contemporary evidence of him is an abstract of a charter dated 784, in which Ealhmund granted land to the Abbot of Reculver. In this charter he is identified as Ealmundus rex Canciæ. By the following year Offa of Mercia seems to have been ruling directly, as he issued a charter without any mention of a local king. General consensus among historians is this is the same Ealhmund found in two pedigrees in the Winchester (Parker) Chronicle, compiled during the reign of Alfred the Great. The genealogical preface to this manuscript, as well as the annual entry (covering years 855–859) describing the death of Æthelwulf, both make King Egbert of Wessex the son of an Ealhmund, who was son of Eafa, grandson of Eoppa, and great-grandson of Ingild, the brother of King Ine of Wessex, and descendant of founder Cerdic, and therefore a member of the House of Wessex (see House of Wessex family tree). A further entry has been added in a later hand to the 784 annal, reporting Ealhmund's reign in Kent. Finally, in the Canterbury Bilingual Epitome, originally compiled after the Norman conquest of England, a later scribe has likewise added to the 784 annal not only Ealhmund's reign in Kent, but his explicit identification with the father of Egbert. Based on this reconstruction, in which a Wessex scion became King of Kent, his own Kentish name and that of his son, Egbert, it has been suggested that his mother derived from the royal house of Kent, a connection dismissed by a recent critical review. Historian Heather Edwards has suggested that Ealhmund was probably a Kentish royal scion, whose pedigree was forged to give his son Egbert the descent from Cerdic requisite to reigning in Wessex. Ealhmund's wife is not known, however, he is identified as the father of: - Ecgberht, King of Wessex. - Æthelburh of Wilton, wife of Wulfstan, ealdorman of Wiltshire, also known as Saint Alburga of Wilton.

- LifeSketch: Ecgberht (or Egbert) (died 4 July 673) was a King of Kent (sometimes called Egbert I) who ruled from 664 to 673, succeeding his father Eorcenberht.[1] He may have still been a child when he became king following his father's death on 14 July 664, because his mother Seaxburh was recorded as having been regent. Ecgberht's court seems to have had many diplomatic and ecclesiastic contacts. He hosted Wilfrid and Benedict Biscop, and provided escorts to Archbishop Theodore and Abbot Adrian of Canterbury for their travels in Gaul. The various versions of the Kentish Royal Legend state that, spurred on by his adviser Thunor, he had his cousins Æthelred and Æthelberht (sons of his uncle Eormenred) killed and had to pay wergild to their sister Domne Eafe, enabling her to build a Monastery at Thanet;[2] this may reflect a dynastic struggle that ended in the success of Eorcenberht's line. The two murdered princes were later venerated as saints at Ramsey Abbey.[3] A charter records Ecgberht's patronage of the monastery at Chertsey. Ecgberht was succeeded by his brother Hlothhere, who was in turn succeeded by Eadric and still later by Wihtred.

- Death of Eorcenberht: Eorcenberht dies during an apparent epidemic which sweeps the country. Only in his forties, his death takes the kingdom by surprise. Deusdedit, archbishop of Canterbury, is also taken suddenly. The accession of the king's son, Ecgberht, is challenged by the heirs of Eormenred - namely his sons, Æthelred and Æthelberht. The 'conspirators' are subsequently murdered at the royal vill of Eastry (near Sandwich in East Kent), but damage is done to Ecgberht and the moral authority of the Oiscingas.

Saint Eormenhild Religion Roman Catholic Eorcenberht of Kent (also Ærconberht, Earconberht, or Earconbert) (died 14 July 664) was king of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Kent from 640 until his death, succeeding his father Eadbald. The Kentish Royal Legend (also known as the Mildrith legend) suggests that he was the younger son of Eadbald and Emma of Austrasia, and that his older brother Eormenred was deliberately passed over, although another possibility is that they ruled jointly. According to Bede (HE III.8), Eorcenberht was the first king in Britain to command that pagan "idols" (cult images) be destroyed and that Lent be observed. It has been suggested that these orders may have been officially committed to writing, in the tradition of Kentish law-codes initiated by Æthelberht, but no such text survives. After the death of Honorius, Archbishop of Canterbury, Eorcenberht appointed the first Saxon archbishop, Deusdedit, in 655. Eorcenberht married Seaxburh of Ely, daughter of king Anna of East Anglia. They had two sons, Ecgberht and Hlothhere, who each consecutively became king of Kent, and two daughters who both were eventually canonized: Saint Eorcengota became a nun at Faremoutiers Abbey on the continent, and Saint Ermenilda became abbess at Ely. Eorcenberht was probably buried alongside his parents in the Church of St Mary, which his father had built in the precincts of the monastery of St Peter and St Paul in Canterbury, a church later incorporated within the Norman edifice of St Augustine's. At that time, his relics were translated for reburial in the south transept ca. A.D. 1087. geni.com Eorcenberht Also Known As: "Eorcenbert" Birthdate: circa 624 Birthplace: Kent, England (United Kingdom) Death: July 14, 664 (35-44) Kent, England (Yellow Plague) Place of Burial: Kent, England, UK Immediate Family: Son of Eadbald, king of Kent and Emma of Francia Husband of Saint Seaxburh, Abbess of Ely Father of Ecgbeorht I, king of Kent; Hlothere, king of Kent; Saint Eormenhild and Saint Eorcongota "the Holy Virgin" Brother of Eormenred and Saint Eanswythe, Abbess of Folkestone
