- Birth: 1425, Perth, Scotland
- Also known as: John of that Ilk
- Also known as: John Moncreiffe
- Title Of Nobility: 7th of Moncreiffe
- LifeSketch: (Sir) John Moncrieff of that Ilk, who, in his father's lifetime, got a charter under the Great Seal, dated 1464, of the lands of Auchindane in Fife. About two years later he obtained another charter from King James III. — Johanni Moncrieff de eodem — of the lands of Gilchriston or Gilgristoune (now Kilgraston) and others. He married Beatrix, daughter of (Sir) Archibald Dundas of that Ilk, by whom he had, according to Douglas, one son and two daughters, and, according to Playfair, two sons — 1. Sir John, his heir. 2. Hugh Moncrieff, who got a charter of the lands of Pitgorno, co. Fife, in 1506, and married Janet Ochiltree. 1st daughter, Isabel, married to Sir William Scott of Balwearie, and had issue. 2d, Elizabeth, married to Patrick Hay of Leys. Sir John died before 1477, and was succeeded by his son John. Source: The house of Moncrieff. by Seton, George, 1822-1908; Moncrieff, Alexander, Sir, 1829-1906. Published 1890 page 28-29. Hereinafter cited as Burke's Peerage and Baronetage, 107th edition. History Origins of the Clan The Moncreiffes are of great antiquity, and possibly descend through a female stem of the Celtic Royal Dynasty. The name Moncreiffe is derived from the Barony of Moncreiffe in Perthshire. Their lands take their name from the Gaelic name Monadh Croibhe meaning hill of the sacred bough. This is represented on the clan crest which features the sacred tree. Although the name is certainly older, the first official record appears when Mathew Moncrieff (brother in law of a co-Regent of Scotland during the minority of Alexander III) was granted a charter for the lands in 1248 A.D. The lands of Moncreiffe then grew with the addition of Culdares and Duneaves in the Highlands and were incorporated into the Barony of Moncreiffe in 1455 According to some accounts the progenitor of the Clan Moncreiffe was of Anglo-Norman lineage and that a man called Mortimer assumed the name of Moncreiffe after obtaining the lands of that name in the parish of Dunbarney, Perthshire. However, this is disputed. Another theory by other historians are that the origins of the clan are linked to the ancient Royal House of Ireland of the great King Niall of the Nine Hostages. The Clan Moncreiffe crest shows a red lion on a silver shield and the colours of Maldred who was the brother of King Duncan I. 16th Century Clan Conflicts & Anglo-Scottish Wars During the Anglo-Scottish Wars in the 16th century the Laird of Moncreiffe was Chamberlain to young King James III of Scotland. He led the Clan Moncreiffe against the English when they fought at the Battle of Flodden Field in 1513. Battle with the Clan Charteris 1544, In 1544 the Clan Ruthven who held considerable sway over Perth from their nearby Castle Huntingtower, often disputed the authority of the Clan Charteris, which led to a bitter and bloody feud. In 1544 Patrick, Lord Ruthven, was elected Provost of Perth, but at the instigation of Cardinal Beaton, who suspected Ruthven of Protestant sympathies, he was deprived of the office, and John Charteris of Kinfauns was appointed in his stead. The city declined to acknowledge Charteris, and barred the gates against him. Clan Charteris, along with Lord Gray and Clan Leslie, gathered their forces and attacked the town. They were repulsed by the Clan Ruthven who were assisted by their neighbours the Clan Moncreiffe, and Charterises was forced to flee. The Ruthvens remained Provosts of Perth until William Ruthven, Earl of Gowrie, was executed in 1584. In 1552 John Charteris had been killed by the earl’s heir in the High Street in Edinburgh In 1547 one branch of the Clan Moncreiffe took part in the attempt to restore the deposed King of Sweden. Three noble Moncreiffe families were also founded in France. One of these families made up part of the Scots Guard of Archers for the King of France. In 1586 William Moncreiffe the 11th chief of Clan Moncreiffe enterd into a treaty with the powerful Clan Murray for mutual defense. This bond was established further by frequent intermarrying between the two clans. Five Lairds, chiefs of Clan Moncreiffe were made officers in the Atholl Highlanders which was the Duke of Atholl's (chief of Clan Murray) private army. 17th Century & Civil War Sir John Moncreiffe the 12th chief of Clan Moncreiffe was promoted from a Baron to a Baronet of Nova Scotia in April 1626. However John was unable to support the King and signed the National Covenant in 1638. His son also called John personally raised a company of the King's Scots Guards by warrant of King Charles II in 1674. This John was heavily in debt and in 1667 a charter was secured for a family agreement where by the Barony of Moncreiffe was sold to Thomas Moncreiffe who was a direct descendant of the eight Laird of Moncreiffe. Thomas also became chief of the Clan Moncreiffe. He was the 14th chief and was made a Baronett by King James VII. Other Achievements Other notable achievements of the family were to produce three renowned Scottish judges and an Episcopal Bishop of Glasgow. Two brothers, William and Malcom Moncfreiffe, immigrated to the United States of America in the 1890s and settled in Big Horn, Wyoming. Using their family's capital from Scotland they established a very successful business raising registered sheep, and played an important role in bringing the sport of polo to the area. Part of the Moncreiffe ranch is now a historic house museum and art gallery called the Bradford Brinton Memorial. On the nearby Big Horn Mountains a ridge of 8,000 feet (2,400 m) elevation is referred to as "Moncreiffe Ridge". Clan Chief and Seat A new seat for the Chief at Moncreiffe, the first major country house completed by Sir William Bruce in 1679. It was the family seat until it was destroyed by fire in November 1957, claiming the life of Sir David Moncreiffe of that Ilk, Baronet, the twenty-third Laird. This tragedy led to the chiefship of the great Scottish herald and historian Sir Iain Moncreiffe. Sir David’s sister, Miss Elizabeth Moncreiffe of Moncreiffe, was his heir, but declared that it was her wish that he be succeeded by her cousin, Sir Iain, the Baron of Easter Moncreiffe, while she retained the feudal barony of Moncreiffe. She built a modern country house on the site of the old seat which incorporates the doorway reclaimed from the ashes of the burned house. Sir Iain died in 1985 and the chiefship reverted to Miss Moncreiffe. On her death, the chiefship passed to Sir Iain’s younger son, the Hon. Peregrine Moncreiffe of Easter Moncreiffe — his elder brother having assumed the name and arms of Hay on succeeding their mother as Earl of Erroll. Clan Profile Gaelic Name: Monadh Craoibhe. - Mother: Unknown Spouse of Macduff DE ABERNETHY
- Birth: 1183, NN
- LifeSketch: Lord of Abernethy From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Lord of Abernethy was from the 12th century to the 14th century the hereditary holder of the church and lands of the Scottish monastery at Abernethy. It gradually evolved alongside the title Abbot of Abernethy, displacing that term in extant sources by the end of the 13th century. It was held by the descendants of Gille Míchéil, Earl of Fife. As Lord Abernethy, it is a subsidiary title of the Dukes of Hamilton and Brandon. The Mormaers and Earls of Fife had enjoyed the privilege of crowning new Kings of Scots. Following the failure of the main MacDuff line, and after the execution of the Stewart Murdoch, Earl of Fife in 1425, the privilege fell back to the second line of MacDuffs, those of Abernethy. Through them this honour was regarded as passing to the Douglas Earls of Angus, notably at the coronation of James III in 1460 when George Douglas, 4th Earl of Angus proclaimed "There! Now that I have set it upon your Grace's head, let me see who will be so bold as to move it." This continuity has survived to the current era, most notably at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, when the then Lord Abernethy and Angus, Douglas Douglas-Hamilton, 14th Duke of Hamilton bore and presented the Crown of Scotland to the Queen at St. Giles' Cathedral. Hamilton's son the 15th Duke, and the 16th Duke performed similar duties at the opening of Scottish Parliaments since 1999. Abbots and lords of Abernethy The abbots of Abernethy were descendants of Gille Míchéil, Earl of Fife. The abbacy may have been held by Áed (called Hugo or Eggu and other Latinised forms), son of Gille Míchéil, but the abbacy is first attested when Áed's son Orm is confirmed in possession of it by King William of Scotland in the 1170s, in condition for making concessions favorable to the King's new monastic establishment at Arbroath Abbey. The title of Abbot disappears in the sources during the abbacy of Laurence, with the title of dominus predominating: Orm de Abernethy (fl. 1170s) Laurence de Abernethy (fl. 1190s) Hugh de Abernethy (d. 1291) Alexander de Abernethy (d. c. 1315) Following the death of Alexander Abernethy, the title passed to his daughter Margaret who married John Stewart of Bonkyll, who assumed the title, as well as being granted the forfeited Earldom of Angus. Douglas lords of Abernethy His granddaughter Margaret Stewart, 4th Countess of Angus and Lady of Abernethy, had an illegitimate son by William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas. In a charter of 1389, Lady Angus transferred the titles of Earl of Angus and the Lordships of Abernethy and Bonkyll to her child. - Father: Chlothar I. König der Franken
- Mother: Ingund VON THURINGEN
- Birth: 539, Soissons, Aisne, Picardie, France
- LifeSketch: Chilperic I (c. 539 – September 584) was the king of Neustria (or Soissons) from 561 to his death. He was the only son of the Frankish king Clotaire I and Queen Aregund. Immediately after the death of his father in 561, he endeavoured to take possession of the whole kingdom, seized the treasure amassed in the royal town of Berny and entered Paris. His brothers, however, compelled him to divide the kingdom with them, and Soissons, together with Amiens, Arras, Cambrai, Thérouanne, Tournai, and Boulogne fell to Chilperic's share. His eldest brother Charibert received Paris, the second eldest brother Guntram received Burgundy with its capital at Orléans, and Sigebert received Austrasia. On the death of Charibert in 567, Chilperic's estates were augmented when the brothers divided Charibert's kingdom among themselves and agreed to share Paris. Not long after his accession, however, he was at war with Sigebert, with whom he would long remain in a state of—at the very least—antipathy. Sigebert defeated him and marched to Soissons, where he defeated and imprisoned Chilperic's eldest son, Theudebert. The war flared in 567, at the death of Charibert. Chilperic immediately invaded Sigebert's new lands, but Sigebert defeated him. Chilperic later allied with Guntram against Sigebert (573), but Guntram changed sides and Chilperic again lost the war. When Sigebert married Brunhilda, daughter of the Visigothic sovereign in Spain (Athanagild), Chilperic also wished to make a brilliant marriage. He had already repudiated his first wife, Audovera, and had taken as his concubine a serving-woman called Fredegund. He accordingly dismissed Fredegund, and married Brunhilda's sister, Galswintha. But he soon tired of his new partner, and one morning Galswintha was found strangled in her bed. A few days afterwards Chilperic married Fredegund. This murder was the cause of more long and bloody wars, interspersed with truces, between Chilperic and Sigebert. In 575, Sigebert was assassinated by Fredegund at the very moment when he had Chilperic at his mercy. Chilperic then made war with the protector of Sigebert's wife and son, Guntram. Chilperic retrieved his position, took from Austrasia Tours and Poitiers and some places in Aquitaine, and fostered discord in the kingdom of the east during the minority of Childebert II. In 578, Chilperic sent an army to fight the Breton ruler Waroch II of the Bro-Wened along the Vilaine. The Frankish army consisted of units from the Poitou, Touraine, Anjou, Maine, and Bayeux. The Baiocassenses (men from Bayeux) were Saxons and they in particular were routed by the Bretons.[1] The armies fought for three days before Waroch submitted, did homage for Vannes, sent his son as a hostage, and agreed to pay an annual tribute. He subsequently broke his oath but Chilperic's dominion over the Bretons was relatively secure, as evidenced by Venantius Fortunatus's celebration of it in a poem. Most of what is known of Chilperic comes from The History of the Franks by Gregory of Tours. Gregory detested Chilperic, calling him "the Nero and Herod of his time" (VI.46): he had provoked Gregory's wrath by wresting Tours from Austrasia, seizing ecclesiastical property, and appointing as bishops counts of the palace who were not clerics. Gregory also objected to Chilperic's attempts to teach a new doctrine of the Trinity.[2] Chilperic's reign in Neustria saw the introduction of the Byzantine punishment of eye-gouging. Yet, he was also a man of culture: he was a musician of some talent, and he wrote verse (modelled on that of Sedulius); he attempted to reform the Frankish alphabet; and he worked to reduce the worst effects of Salic law upon women. In September 584, while returning from a hunting expedition at his royal villa of Chelles, Chilperic was stabbed to death by an unknown assailant. Family Chilperic I's first marriage was to Audovera. They had five children: . Theudebert (killed at battle 573). . Merovech (killed by a servant at his request in 577), married the widow Brunhilda (his aunt by marriage) and became his father's enemy . Clovis (assassinated by Fredegund in 580). . Basina (d. aft. 590), nun, led a revolt in the abbey of Poitiers . Childesinda (died young from dysentery) His short second marriage to Galswintha produced no children. His concubinage and subsequent marriage to Fredegund in about 568 produced six more legitimate offspring: . Rigunth (born c. 569 – aft. 589), betrothed to Reccared but never married. Shown as Rigundus in read only file . Chlodebert (c. 570/72 – 580), died young. . Samson (c. 573 – late 577), died young. . Dagobert (c. 579/80 – 580), died young. . Theuderic (c. 582 – 584), died young. . Chlothar II (born before September 584 – died 18 October 629), Chilperic's successor in Neustria, later sole king of the Franks. Etymology Chilperic's name in Frankish meant "powerful supporter", akin to German hilfreich "auxiliary" (cf. German Hilfe "aid" and reich "rich, orig. powerful") Less

- LifeSketch: Wikiwand - Itta of Metz, O.S.B. (also Ida, Itte or Iduberga; 592–8 May 652) was the wife of Pepin of Landen, Mayor of the Palace of the Kingdom of Austrasia. After his death, she founded the Abbey of Nivelles, where she became a Colombanian nun along with her daughter, Gertrude of Nivelles. Both are honored as saints by the Catholic Church. She married Pepin of Landen, Mayor of the Merovingian Royal Palace.[2] After Pepin's death in 640, Itta and her daughter, Gertrude, withdrew from the capital for a life of religious reflection.[1] Later, around 647, on the advice of Amandus, the Bishop of Maastricht, she founded the Abbey of Nivelles. The abbey was originally just a community of nuns, but it later became a double monastery when the nuns were joined by a group of Irish monks who offered them support in the operations of the abbey. She might have appointed her daughter, Gertrude, as its first abbess, while she herself lived there as a simple nun, assisting the young abbess by her advice.[3] Itta died at the abbey on 8 May 652.[3] Children Itta had another daughter by Pepin, Abbess Begga of Andenne, who had married Ansegisel, son of Arnulf of Metz prior to joining the monastery.[1] By Begga, she is the grandmother of Pepin of Herstal and one of the matriarchs of the great Carolingian family. Her sons were Grimoald, later Mayor of the Palace, and father of King Childebert the Adopted; Itta's second son Bavo (or Allowin), became a hermit and was later canonized. Both her daughters were also canonized, as was she. Her feast day is celebrated on 8 May.[3] Patronage Itta is honored as the patron saint of the French village of Itteville, which was founded on the site of a farm which she had established.

- LifeSketch: From wikipedia: Open main menu Osberht of Northumbria LanguageDownload PDFWatchEdit Osberht (died 21 March 867) was king of Northumbria in the middle of the 9th century. Sources on Northumbrian history in this period are limited. Osberht's descent is not known and the dating of his reign is problematic. Osberht A styca of Osberht King of NorthumbriaReignc.849 – c.866 ADPredecessorÆthelred IISuccessorÆlla Died21 March 867HouseNorthumbria Contents ChroniclesEdit Osberht became king after Æthelred son of Eanred was murdered. The date of Æthelred's death is not certain, but is generally placed in 848.[1] However, Symeon of Durham writes that "Ethelred the son of Eanred reigned nine years. When he was slain Osbryht held the kingdom for thirteen years" and states that 854 was "the fifth year of the rule of Osbert, the successor of Ethelred, who had been put to death".[2] Little is known of Osberht's reign. Symeon states that "Osbert had dared with sacrilegious hand to wrest from that church Wercewurde and Tillemuthe".[3] The Historia de Sancto Cuthberto dates the seizure of these lands to the year before Osberht's death.[4] Osberht was replaced as king by Ælla. While Ælla is described in most sources as a tyrant, and not a rightful king, one source states that he was Osberht's brother.[5] The Great Heathen Army marched on Northumbria in the late summer of 866, seizing York on 21 November 866.[6] Symeon of Durham, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Asser, and Æthelweard all recount substantially the same version of events in varying detail. Symeon's Historia Regum Anglorum gives this account of the battle on 21 March 867 where Osberht and Ælla met their deaths at the hands of the Vikings:[7] Copper alloy of styca of King Osberht In those days, the nation of the Northumbrians had violently expelled from the kingdom the rightful king of their nation, Osbryht by name, and had placed at the head of the kingdom a certain tyrant, named Alla. When the pagans came upon the kingdom, the dissension was allayed by divine counsel and the aid of the nobles. King Osbryht and Alla, having united their forces and formed an army, came to the city of York; on their approach the multitude of the shipmen immediately took flight. The Christians, perceiving their flight and terror, found that they themselves were the stronger party. They fought upon each side with much ferocity, and both kings fell. The rest who escaped made peace with the Danes.[8] King Osberht may have been buried in Thornhill, Yorkshire. A rare cluster of high status Anglian gravestones from that era, one bearing his name, were discovered in Victorian times in the graveyard of the ancient church of St Michael and All Angels, where they are on public display. After this, the Vikings appointed one Ecgberht to rule Northumbria.[9] SagasEdit Ragnarssona þáttr (The Tale of Ragnar's sons) adds a great deal of colour to accounts of the Viking conquest of York. This associates the semi-legendary king of Sweden Ragnar Lodbrok and his sons, Hvitserk, Björn Ironside, Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye, Ivar the Boneless, and Ubbe. According to the stories, Ragnar was killed by Ælla, and the army which seized York in 866 was led by Ragnar's sons who avenged his death by subjecting Ælla to the blood eagle.[10] Earlier English sources record that Ælla and Osberht died in battle, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle stating that "both the kings were slain on the spot".[11] The main figure in the revenge tales is Ivar, who is sometimes associated with the Viking leader Ímar, brother of Amlaíb Conung, found in the Irish annals. Dorothy Whitelock notes that "it is by no means certain that he should be identified with the son of Ragnar, for the name is not uncommon".[12] The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle does not name the leaders in Northumbria, but it does state that "Hingwar and Hubba" slew King Edmund of East Anglia (Saint Edmund) some years later.[13] Hubba is named as a leader of the army in Northumbria by Abbo of Fleury, and by the Historia Historia de Sancto Cuthberto. Symeon of Durham lists the leaders of the Viking army as "Halfdene, Inguar, Hubba, Beicsecg, Guthrun, Oscytell, Amund, Sidroc and another duke of the same name, Osbern, Frana, and Harold."[14] Norman historian Geoffrey Gaimar and Geoffrey of Wells both associate an Englishman named "Bern" or "Buern" with bringing the Danes to England, in Gaimar's case to Northumbria, in Geoffrey of Wells' mid-twelfth-century hagiography of Saint Edmund, to East Anglia. Gaimar's account has "Buern" seeking revenge for Osberht's rape of his wife.[15] OtherEdit Hector Boece relates that two Northumbrian princes, Osbrecht and Ella, took the castle at Stirling.[16] NotesEdit ^ However, D.P. Kirby suggests that it may have been as late as 853; Kirby, p. 196.^ Symeon of Durham, pp. 653 & 761. Kirby, pp. 196–197, notes the dating problems: if Osberht reigned thirteen years, he was either deposed in around 862, or did not become king until c. 853. Kirby suggests that the discrepancies are due to confusion caused by the omission of Eardwulf's second reign from regnal lists.^ Symeon of Durham, p. 654.^ Kirby, p. 196.^ Kirby, p. 197.^ Higham, pp. 178–179; ASC s.a. 867.^ Dated by Symeon of Durham, p. 654.^ Symeon of Durham, p. 470.^ Higham, p.179.^ Whitelock, p. 225ff.^ ASC, s.a. 867.^ Whitelock, p. 227.^ ASC, s.a. 870.^ Symeon of Durham, p. 654.
