- MANY ALTERNATE NAMES: Since the 1990s, academics have accorded Óláfr various personal names in English secondary sources: Amhlaibh,[2] Amhlaoibh,[3] Amlaíb,[4] Amlaim,[5] Olaf,[6] Óláf,[7] Olafr,[8] Ólafr,[9] Óláfr,[10] and Olav.[11] Likewise, academics have accorded Óláfr various patronyms in English secondary sources: Amhlaíbh Derg mac Gofhraidh,[12] Amlaíb mac Gofraid Méránaich,[13] Amlaíb mac Gofraid,[14] Olaf Godredsson,[15] Olaf Gudrodson,[16] Óláf Guðrøðsson,[17] Óláfr bitlingr Guðrøðsson,[18] Olafr Godredsson,[8] Óláfr Godredsson,[19] Óláfr Gothfrithsson,[20] Óláfr Guðrǫðarson,[21] Óláfr Guðröðarson,[22] Ólafr Guðrøðarson,[23] Óláfr Guðrøðarson,[24] Óláfr Guðrøðarsson,[25] Óláfr Guðrøðson,[26] Óláfr Guthfrithsson.[13] and Olav Gudrødsson Bitling.[11] Similarly, academics had accorded Óláfr various epithets in English secondary sources: Amhlaíbh Derg mac Gofhraidh,[12] Amlaíb 'the Red',[27] Amlaíb Derg,[28] Olaf Bitling,[29] Olaf Kleining,[30] Olaf the Diminutive,[31] Olaf the Red,[32] Olaf "the Red",[33] Olaf Titbit,[13] Óláfr Bitling,[13] Óláfr bitlingr Guðrøðsson,[18] Óláfr Bitlingr,[34] Óláfr klíningr Guðrøðarson,[35] Ólafr Suðreyjakonungr,[36] Óláfr Titbit,[37] and Olav Gudrødsson Bitling.[11] Óláfr is accorded several epithets in important mediaeval primary sources. The thirteenth-century Orkneyinga saga accords him the Old Norse byname bitlingr, which can translate to "bit", "the diminutive", "little-bit", "morsel", "tit-bit".[38] The Old Norse byname klíningr, which can translate to "Buttered Cake", "buttered bread", is accorded to Óláfr by Hákonar saga herðibreiðs within the thirteenth-century saga-compilation Heimskringla.[39] If these two epithets refer to Óláfr's stature, in the sense of "the small one" or "the little one", it is possible that they either refer in a literal sense to the small stature, or in an ironical sense to great height.[40] Another epithet, "the Red", is accorded to Óláfr by the seventeenth-century Sleat History.
- LifeSketch: Óláfr Guðrøðarson was a twelfth-century King of Mann and the Isles. He is known by many names: Olaf Godredsson, Olaf the Red, Amlaíb mac Gofraid, only to name a few. He was a younger son of Guðrøðr Crovan, King of Dublin and the Isles. His father was also known as Godred Crovan Haraldsson, Gofraid Crobán, Gofraid Meránach, and Gofraid Méránach. The name of Olaf's mother is not known, he was likely born between 1080 and 1090 in the Isle of Mann, as his father did not conquer Dublin until the early 1090s. Olaf is known to have had 2 older brothers: Lǫgmaðr and Haraldr. Godred died in 1095, when Olaf was still very young. In the aftermath of their father's death, Olaf witnessed a vicious power struggle between his older brothers. At some point Olaf, who was much younger than his brothers, was sent to England for his safety and was fostered by Henry I, King of England. Olaf finished growing up at the English court, and his later religious foundations show that he was greatly influenced by his English upbringing. He is considered a protégé of the English king. Olaf's older brother Lǫgmaðr appears to have dominated control of the Isles until about 1198 when he left the Isles and went on crusade to the Holy Lands. His absence left a constant struggle for power there. It would have been to England's benefit to have an ally in the Isles who could limit Irish influence and strengthen the expansion of English authority into the Irish Sea region. Henry I appears to have installed Olaf on the throne of the Isles at some point between 1112 and 1115. He would rule there for 40 years. Olaf used marriage, both of himself and eventually his children, to cement alliances and strengthen his kingdom. He is recorded to have had at least two wives, as well as concubines, by whom he had several daughters and four sons: Rǫgnvaldr, Lǫgmaðr, Haraldr, and Godred (Guðrøðr). Olaf's 1st wife was Ingibjǫrg, daughter of Hákon Pálsson, Earl of Orkney; the marriage was part of and alliance with Orkney. Ingibjǫrg's brother was Páll Hákonarson, Earl of Orkney. Ingibjǫrg is believed to be the mother of Olaf's daughter Ragnhildr, who married Somairle mac Gilla Brigte, Lord of Argyll. Ingibjǫrg is often assumed to be the mother of his sons Rǫgnvaldr, Lǫgmaðr, and Haraldr, however, this is not known with certainty. Olaf's 2nd marriage was to Affraic, daughter of Fergus, Lord of Galloway. This union seems to reveal that Olaf shifted from an alliance with Orkney to one with Galloway. The Chronicle of Mann confirms the marriage of Olaf to Affraic. It was likely arranged between 1130 and 1140. Not only was Affraic the daughter of Fergus, Lord of Galloway, she is also believed to be the granddaughter of Henry I, Olaf's mentor and foster parent. The marital alliance forged between Olaf and Fergus gave the Crovan dynasty valuable family connections with one of the most powerful rulers in western Europe, the English King. Affraic is believed to have been born about 1120. She is specifically identified as the mother of Olaf's son Godred (Guðrøðr or Godfrey). Godred was old enough to go on a diplomatic mission to Norway in 1152 so was likely born about 1135 or before. Considering Affriac's and Godred's estimated birth dates, a marriage date of 1133 or 1134 is highly likely. Olaf reigned as King of the Isles for a about 40 years from 1112/1115 to 1153. He was all about alliances and formed many strong ones. David I of Scotland was exiled at the court of Henry I at the same time that Olaf was there and they appear to have supported each other as rulers. David I died in May of 1153, his death and the perceived loss of this alliance, may have contributed to Olaf's assassination a month later on 29 June. At the time of his death, Olaf's son Godred (Guðrøðr) was at the court of Ingi Haraldsson, King of Norway, forging closer ties with the Kingdom of Norway. Olaf's 3 nephews from Dublin, sons of his older brother Haraldr, confronted Olaf demanding half the kingdom be handed over to them. Olaf convened a formal council during which one of the nephews, Rognvaldr, approached to salute the king, but decapitated him instead with a single axe stroke. The 3 brothers took control of Mann, attempted to execute or expel all supporters of Godred, the kingdom's legitimate heir, and attacked Godred's grandfather, Fergus. When Godred returned to the Isles, he overthrew his usurping cousins, and took back the throne for himself. Through his son Godred, Olaf was the patrilineal-ancestor of later rulers of the Crovan dynasty who controlled the Isles until the second half of the thirteenth century. --------------------- Óláfr Guðrøðarson was a twelfth-century King of Mann and the Isles.[note 1] As a younger son of Guðrøðr Crovan, King of Dublin and the Isles, Óláfr witnessed a vicious power struggle between his elder brothers in the aftermath of their father's death. The year 1153 was a watershed in the history of the Kingdom of the Isles. Óláfr was assassinated on 29 June, whilst Guðrøðr was still absent in Norway.[292] According to the Chronicle of Mann, Óláfr had been confronted by three Dublin-based nephews—the Haraldssonar—the sons of his exiled brother, Haraldr. After hearing the demands of these men—that half of the kingdom should be handed over to them—a formal council was convened in which one of the Haraldssonar—a man named Rǫgnvaldr—approached Óláfr, raised his axe as if to salute the king, and decapitated him in a single stroke. - LifeSketch: Quaker Gregg Book: Jacob Gregg b. Dec. 28, 1737 New Castle Co., Delaware; d. near Van Buren, Crawford Co., Arkansas about 1828. Restless, intelligent, possessing great initiatlve, he went to North Carolina on a visit when young. After his return he conveyed his interest in his father’s mill and sold the land to his brother Hermon, June 20, 1759. With Barkers, Witsons, Chandlers, Hollingsworths he removed by certificate to the Cane Creek Monthly Meeting fourteen miles south of Graham in Alamance County, North Carolina on October 11, 1764 and was there received by certificate on March 2, 1765 from the Kennett Mo. Mtg. in Pennsylvania. He settled near his second cousin Jacob Graigg son of Richard Gregg and Ann Hadley who had moved without certificate when newly married in 1762. In April 1765 these cousins as Jacob Grigg Sr. and Jacob Grigg Jr. with other petitioners signed an appeal to lessen their taxes. In Cane Creek Mtg., Alamance Co. N. C. he m. Oct. 11, 1764 Mary (Polly) Hatcher. On Feb. 7, 1767 Jacob Greg was disowned by the Friends Mo. Mtg. They lived near many relatives for nearly thirty years before moving to eastern Tennessee and lived awhile in Overton and Knox Counties, Tenn. which had been admitted to the Union June 1, 1796. In 1803 they moved with married children into Madison County of southwestern Illinois. “East of Seybold in the vicinity of Troy the Greggs came in 1803. In April, Jacob settled one-half mile south of Troy. The next year 1804 he planted a pear tree which bore large crops of fruit for more than half a century after. His sons Philip, Titus, John, and Hermon settled the same neighborhood. John on the prairie not far from Robert Seybold. The Greggs were from Kentucky slow and unprogressive, and in after years grumbled at being taxed to support the free schools, and favored the introduction of slavery. Jacob settled the Baird place and planted the old pear tree 1804 which has done faithful service since, and in 1864 yielded a crop which sold in Dubuque, Iowa for $125. Philip Gregg settled the place owned by Julius A. Barnsnack; Titus Gregg and John the James Taylor’s place on the west of the prairie, and Hermon Gregg settled the site of Troy. The Jarvis Township was not surveyed until 1806. Troy was originally Brookside.” The reason the Greggs did not like to pay taxes for public schools is easily explained. They were Quakers and Quakers always maintained and operated their own schools. Sometimes these private schools were on their own farms and were the only schools in the vicinity as the Quakers were zealous educators. All were educated early in life on many subjects. The Greggs were not accustomed to paying for both public and private schools. They supervised the education of their own young and thought that was sufficient. Jacob Gregg was a benevolent man as the 1820 census of Madison County, Illinois indicates six in his household, probably the family of his son Phillip Gregg who died 1816.

He first settled in Paxtang [note], Cumberland Co. Pennsylvania and later moved to Augusta Co., Virginia. He was born in Coleraine, County Londonderry, Ulster, Ireland, later moving to Waterford Co., Ireland. He married Nancy Ann Wood, dau. of William Wood. John and Nancy had William, John, Thomas, Robert, Andrew and Elizabeth. John "the Quaker" followed William Penn to the USA to buy land to farm and raise his family. [note: Paxtang is now a suburb of Harrisburg, PA][1][2][3] Caveat 1 ***Note: Although the majority of documentation (of which there is scant to begin with) on ‘John Gregg/Gragg’ (my direct lineage 7th Great Grandfather) provides the “E” as the dominant spelling from Ireland and into America; after coming to America (Pennsylvania to Virginia and beyond) the two (‘E’ and ‘A’) became virtually interchangeable, until (in my lineage) it became “A” as the dominant, and not “E” for the descending 7 generations. So, the question becomes “Should it be ‘E’ or ‘A’ on the last name of John (1690-1758)? Is this really relevant, given that they have become interchangeable, and some lines go with one, as other lines adopted the other? Should the lineage that has retained the “E” believe that they are somehow superior, to those who retained the “A”? The logical answer would seem to be ‘either’, ‘or’! Which, when faced with the fact that it should actually be “MacGregor”! *** Caveat 2 ***Note: There is scant to no material evidence that John was the child of John Gregg and Elizabeth Cooke”! *** Caveat 3 ***Note: I found this information at 'Clan Gregor DNA Project - Results' while looking for information of the parents of John Gregg/Gragg (b.1690): (https://www.familytreedna.com/public/macgregor/default.aspx?section=results) "99546 descends John Gragg born Antrim, Northern Ireland, c1690 6979 is descended from Thomas Gregg c1805-1871 Co Tipperary, Ireland. This family is now in the US" I think they meant that Thomas Gregg was descended from John, as John was born before Thomas. I also found this: "81282 Earliest known ancestor is John Gragg(Gregg) born in 1690,county of Antrim,Ireland. He died in 1758 in Augusta ,Virginia. He married Nancy Ann Wood in 1717 in Cumberland Co, Pennsylvania. They had five known children- Thomas, Margaret, John F, Robert, and William Obediah. My family branch descends from Robert Gragg." John Gregg (Gragg) Born - 1690 in Londondimmigrant - 1682 , ship "Caledonia" John Henry Gregg called "John Gregg of Brandywine" in many Quaker meeting minutes[1][2] History and genealogy of the Harlan family Pg 8 Origin John Henry Gregg was born in 1668 at Ardmore, co. Waterford, Ireland.[3] According to Herbert Standing, although the family hailed from Ireland, they seemed to have a Scottish background.[4] John was the eldest son of immigrants William Gregg and Ann Wilkinson.[3] He was also the brother of Ann, George, and Richard Gregg.[5] The family lived in Ireland until John was fourteen (1682) when they emigrated to William Penn's new, Quaker-friendly, colony of Pennsylvania.[3] Associations William Dixon married about 1690 to John's sister, Ann Gregg.[4] The Dixons were Quaker immigrants from Northern Ireland.[4] After William's death, Ann married John Houghton as her 2nd husband.[6] John H. Gregg was one of the executors for the March 10, 1720 will of John Houhton in which he mentions his daughter, Ann Dixon; executors were John Gregg and wife Ann Houghton.[7] Immigration John and his family immigrated in 1682 aboard the ship "Caledonia," and landed at Upland (now Chester, Pennsylvania) on the Delaware river. The family settled a bit south of there in the newly-opened "three lower counties" of Pennsylvania, which became the state of Delaware.[5] In 1735, John H. Gregg of Christiana Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware, yeoman, aged about 67 years, gave a deposition in which he stated "that he has dwelt in said County about 51 yrs."[8] His testimony places the family's emigration to Pennsylvania at about 1682 and arrival in New Castle County, Delaware, about 1684. The family settled in Christiana Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware, and by 1684, John's father had acquired his second grant for a total of 600 acres.[5] He began building a cabin at "Strand Millas," possibly named after after a favorite place near his home in Ireland. There is an industrial town near Belfast by this name, but one author thinks it may have originally been "Stran Millis" which means "sweet, or pleasant stream."[5] This area was fertile land lying between the Brandywine and Red Clay Creeks, and it is still farmland today. John's father died September 1, 1687 when John was only nineteen. Delaware Quakers John and his family were members of the Society of Friends. When the creek was passable, they attended the Monthly Meeting at the Brandywine Hundred Meeting at Newark.[5] In winter months, when the creek was high, they obtained permission to have Meetings nearer their home, and this eventually became the Centre Meeting.[5] Family John was twenty-nine when he married in a Quaker marriage ceremony on November 11, 1694, at the Concord Monthly Meeting in Concord, Chester County, Pennsylvania (now Delaware) to Elizabeth Cooke (b 1672 of Darby, Delaware Co., Pennsylvania).[6] Elizabeth was the sister of Grace Cooke, and the daughter of William and Grace Cooke.[6] John & Elizabeth (Cooke) Gregg had 7 children (3 girls & 4 boys):[3][9][6] William Gregg, eldest son b 1695, d 1747; mar Margery Kinkey Amy "Emey" Gregg b August 25, 1698, d c. 1738; mar Joseph Hadley Thomas Gregg b 1703, d September 1, 1748 Virginia; mar Dinah Harlan Joseph Gregg August 5, 1710 in Kennett, d October 1, 1770 in Chester, PA; mar Hannah Beeson Samuel Gregg b c. 1712 Kennett, d September 10, 1767 in New Castle, DE; mar Ann Robinson Hannah Gregg b c. 1715 Kennett; mar George Robinson Rebecca Gregg b c. 1718 Kennett; mar. Unknown Spragg Beginning with the birth of Joseph, the children's births were reported as at Kennett Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania.[9] Note: Some sources include 2 additional children, but without hard evidence: Jacob Gregg John Gregg Property John inherited land from his father, and he and his wife Elizabeth purchased more land. For example, on 17 August 1702, they purchased land on the Brandywine and built a grist mill.[1] This may have been the first land sold out of Letitia's Penns Manor.[10] John acquired a great deal of property during his lifetime, some say between five and six thousand acres.[5] He built two mills, possibly a stone house and stone spring house (which are still standing), and innumerable barns, sheds and out buildings.[5] He may have built the two beautiful stone houses on Rockland Road between present-day Montchanin and Rockland. Now listed with the National Register of Historic Places, they are located on property which belonged to John Gregg, and are of the right era (300+ years old).[5] The larger is called Strand Millas, and the smaller, on the other side of the road, is "Rock Spring."[5] John purchased land in Christina Hundred and Mill Creek Hundred, New Castle, Delaware, as well as land in Pennsylvania. His holdings extended southward toward present-day Wilmington, Delaware.[5] Last Will & Testament Abstract of will, written April 27, 1738: In the name of God and on this twenty-second day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and thirty-eight, I John Gregg of the County of New Castle on Delaware and Christiana Hundred, a yeoman being of perfect mind and memory thanks to God . . . Elizabeth, my Dearly Beloved wife William my Eldest Son son Thomas son Joseph son Samuel my three Daughters: Emey, Hannah and Rebecah[11] John chose his sons William and Samuel as his executors.[7] His will was written on April 27, 1738 and probated on March 6, 1738.[7] Death and Legacy John Gregg died between April 27, 1738 and March 6, 1738,[7] at the Christina Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware and was buried at the Friends Burial Ground, Centerville, New Castle County, Delaware.[3][12] The stone house known as "Strand Millas" was given to their son Samuel.[5] One of the mills was conveyed to son William in 1730, before John's death.[10] Sources ↑ 1.0 1.1 ↑ http://www.gregghistory.com/Master.htm?#TreeGregg ↑ 3.0 3.1 3.2 3.3 3.4 ↑ 4.0 4.1 4.2 ↑ 5.00 5.01 5.02 5.03 5.04 5.05 5.06 5.07 5.08 5.09 5.10 5.11 ↑ 6.0 6.1 6.2 6.3 ↑ 7.0 7.1 7.2 7.3 ↑ ↑ 9.0 9.1 ↑ 10.0 10.1 ↑ ↑ Find A Grave Memorial# 45352187 - John Henry Gregg [7] [11] [8] [6] [10] [1] [3] [4] [5] [9][13] See also: Marshall, Elma Gregg, A Short History of John Henry Gregg's Family and their Ancestors. 1687, list of Taxables on the north side of Christiana Creek. - LifeSketch: Ben M. Angel summary: Ostrogotha is supposed to have been the King of the Goths that led the future Visigoths and Ostrogoths to the region north of the Black Sea. The Goths first emerge on the shores of the Black Sea with the 238 raid on the Roman settlement of Histria (present Lake Sinoe on the Romanian Dobruja coast) and the pressure they exerted on the ancient Bosporan Kingdom in Crimea during the reign of King Ininthimeus 235-240. By 242, the Romans had evacuated from their client state, abandoning it to the Goths. (The Goths, however, would not apparently make any serious effort to conquer this kingdom until 342, a year after the last known Bosporan coin was minted.) Speculation about Cniva, the known leader of the 250 Gothic punitive raid on the Roman Balkans, being Ostrogotha apparently comes from Jordanes, who described the same event in two sets of passages, depicting them as separate raids. Not much can be determined from creating a timeline for Ostrogotha's life, as the only two states with any recorded history that he made contact with were on the Black Sea (and timelines are provided in the About Me section of his descendants through to the next great Gothic King, Airmanareiks. ******** From "The Origins and Deeds of the Goths" - Jordane (97) So then, as we were saying, Fastida, king of the Gepidae, stirred up his quiet people to enlarge their boundaries by war. He overwhelmed the Burgundians, almost annihilating them, and conquered a number of other races also. He unjustly provoked the Goths, being the first to break the bonds of kinship by unseemly strife. He was greatly puffed up with vain glory, but in seeking to acquire new lands for his growing nation, he only reduced the numbers of his own countrymen. --- (98) For he sent ambassadors to Ostrogotha, to whose rule Ostrogoths and Visigoths alike, that is, the two peoples of the same tribe, were still subject. Complaining that he was hemmed in by rugged mountains and dense forests, he demanded one of two things,--that Ostrogotha should either prepare for war or give up part of his lands to them. (99) Then Ostrogotha, king of the Goths, who was a man of firm mind, answered the ambassadors that he did indeed dread such a war and that it would be a grievous and infamous thing to join battle with their kin,--but he would not give up his lands. And why say more? The Gepidae hastened to take arms and Ostrogotha likewise moved his forces against them, lest he should seem a coward. They met at the town of Galtis, near which the river Auha flows, and there both sides fought with great valor; indeed the similarity of their arms and of their manner of fighting turned them against their own men. But the better cause and their natural alertness aided the Goths. (100) Finally night put an end to the battle as a part of the Gepidae were giving way. Then Fastida, king of the Gepidae, left the field of slaughter and hastened to his own land, as much humiliated with shame and disgrace as formerly he had been elated with pride. The Goths returned victorious, content with the retreat of the Gepidae, and dwelt in peace and happiness in their own land so long as Ostrogotha was their leader.

Glut" https://www.geni.com/people/Drottning-av-H%C3%A5logaland-Gl%C3%B6d-Grimsdatter-Queen-of-H%C3%A5logaland/6000000045210778868 In the Saga of Thorstein Víking's son The beginning of Þorsteins saga Víkingssonar ('Saga of Thorstein son of Víking') brings in a king named Logi who ruled the country north of Norway. Logi was the handsomest of men, but with the strength and size of the giants from whom he was descended. (Logi's ancestry is here not otherwise specified.) Because Logi was larger and stronger than any other man in land, his name was lengthened from Logi to Hálogi ('High-Logi') and from that name the country was called Hálogaland 'Hálogi's-land' (modern Hålogaland or Halogaland). The saga tells that Hálogi's wife was Glöd (Glǫð 'glad'), the daughter of Grím (Grímr) of Grímsgard (Grímsgarðr) in Jötunheim in the far north and her mother was Alvör (Alvǫr) the sister of King Álf the Old ('Álfr hinn gamli') of Álfheim. Or perhaps, the name of Hálogi's wife should be rendered instead as Glód (Glóð 'red-hot embers') if this Logi is indeed either identical or confused with Logi as a personification of fire. The names of his daughters in this account were Eisa 'glowing embers' and Eimyrja 'embers', the fairest women in the land, whose names were later applied to the things which became their meaning, certain indication of the original fiery nature of their father. (Wife and daughters are sometimes wrongly ascribed to Loki rather than Logi in secondary sources.) Two of Hálogi's jarls named Véseti and Vífil (Vífill) abducted Hálogi's daughters and fled the country. At that point Hálogi is out of the story. Véseti settled in Borgundarhólm (Bornholm) where Eisa bore him two sons named Búi and Sigurd Cape (Sigurðr Kápa). Vífil fled farther east to an island named Vífilsey 'Vífil's Isle' where Eimyrja bore him a son named Víking (Víkingr) who was father of Thorstein (Þorsteinn) the hero of the saga. Víking is made out to be a contemporary of a King Ólaf (Ólafr) who is said to be the brother of King Önund (Ǫnundr) of Sweden. Descendants of Thorstein appear in Fridthjófs saga ins frækna (Friðþjófs saga ins frækna 'Saga of Fridthjof the Bold') and in the Starkad section of Gautreks saga 'Gautrek's saga'. This account cannot be reconiciled with the account in the Hversu and Orkneyinga saga without assuming multiple figures with the same names. In Thorsteins saga Víkingssonar, Logi (a descendant of giants) is the husband to a niece of King Álf the Old of Álfheim who himself is the husband of Bergdís the daughter of King Raum (Raumr) of Raumaríki. In the other accounts Logi is the brother of Kári who is a distant ancestor of Raum the Old who is father of Álf or Finnálf (Finnálfr), king of Álfheim. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fornj%C3%B3t
