- LifeSketch: Early British Kingdoms Ysfael Gwron, King of Ysfeilion (Born. c.AD 430) Ysfael was one of the many sons of Cunedda Wledig, amongst whom his kingdom was eventually divided. He inherited the only portion of Ynys Mon (Anglesey) conquered by Cunedda's family, the eastern horn around Beaumaris. The name of his kingdom was long retained in Maes Osmeliaun, now known as Llanfaes. It was a dangerous border region, for the Irish controlled the rest of the Island; but Ysfael appears to have upheld the British foothold with some success. It was suggested by Owen Rhoscomyl that he should probably be identified with Cunedda's son, Gwron - an epithet meaning 'Hero'. He only appears in late lists of Cunedda's sons, and his own sons, Meilir Meilirion, Cynyr and Yneigr, were certainly active on Ynys Mon (Anglesey).

Tegeingle AP CUNNEDA
- Father: Cunedda Wledig AP EDERN of Gwynedd
- Birth: ABT 421, Manau Gododdin, Firth of Forth, Stirling, Scotland
- LifeSketch: BIO: from British Kings and Queens (Mike Ashley) p 131 Ceredig, Ceredigion, fl 470s Ceredig is the eponymous founder of Ceredigion, and supposed son of Cunedda. His existence, though, is subject to doubt, and his name may have been assumned by working back form the name of the territory. If he existed, he must have been a younger son of Cunedda, as Einion inhertited the heartland of Venedotia (Gwynedd), while Ceredig inherited the coastal territory of west Wales. He probably ruled it as a sub-kingdomof Gwynedd, assuming it existed at all at tahat taime. There is some archeological evidence to suggest that the southern part of Ceredigion was culturally part of Dyfed and thus had closer Irish connections. Ceredig is recorded as marrying Eleri, the daughter of Brychan, which if true, would place him closer to the early sixth century. Two of Ceredig's daughters married the native rulers of Gwent and Glywysing suggesting that Ceredig was keen to develop alliances in south Wales. It is just possible that this Ceredig bears some relation to Ceretic, the ruler of Alclud, for although the latter is clearly identified with Dumbartom, both would have had opportunities to undertake slave trading in Ireland. ************* Wikipedia Ceredig ap Cunedda, (424 - 453 AD), king of Ceredigion,[1] may have been born c. 420 AD in the Brythonic kingdom of Manaw Gododdin (modern Lothian in Scotland), centred on the Firth of Forth in the area known as Yr Hen Ogledd. Little is known of him. One of the sons of Cunedda, grandfather of Saint David,[2] according to tradition, he arrived in what is now modern Wales from Gododdin with his father's family when they were invited to help ward off Irish invaders. As a reward for his bravery, his father gave him the southernmost part of the territories in north-west Wales reconquered from the Irish. The realm came to be called Ceredigion after him. ************************* Early British Kingdoms Ceredig Ceredigion, King of Ceredigion (Born c.AD 420) Ceredig was born in his father Cunedda Wledig's original homeland of Manau Gododdin around the Upper Firth of Forth. When called upon to expel Irish invaders from North Wales in the early 5th century, he travelled south, with the rest of his family. He fought bravely against the advancing Gaels and his father rewarded him with the most southern area of his new kingdom, bordering on Dyfed, possibly including part of the Cantref Gwaelod. Here, he became a great patron of his brother-in-law, St. Curig. The region became so associated with Ceredig that the people named it Ceredigion after him. In his old age, the kingdom was attacked once more by the Irish and he was persuaded by his counsellors to abdicate in favour of a younger man. However, his heir, his eldest grandson, Carannog, declined the offer of the Crown in order to become a hermit. Instead the people of Ceredigion had to look to Ceredig's second son, Usai. ********************** History Files.co.uk Ceredigion Although not really one of the sub-kingdoms of Gwynedd, Ceredigion, situated along much of the western coast of Cymru, was founded by Ceretic ap Cunedda. It bordered Dyfed and Powys, the former a Gaelic Deisi kingdom growing in strength, the latter the long border kingdom slowly being squeezed by the English. The creation of this kingdom, sealing the gap between Dyfed and Gwynedd, effectively secured the purpose of the Votadini migration and prevented any further Irish raids on Wales. The name lives on today as the English Cardigan, although its original name is still used in Cymru.

- LifeSketch: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gradlon Gradlon the Great (Gradlon Meur) was a semi-legendary 5th century "king" of Cornouaille who became the hero of many Breton folk stories. The most famous of these legends is the story of the sunken city of Ys. He is supposed to have been the son of Conan Meriadoc. «b»The legend Gradlon and Malgven«/b» According to some 19th-century legends, he was in love with a magician called Malgven. Gradlon had many ships he used to wage war against the faraway countries of the North. An outstanding strategist, he won most of the battles and pillaged the vanquished, amassing great wealth. One day, his sailors tired of fighting and refused to continue to lay siege to a castle. The sailors returned home and he remained alone in the North. When he was alone he saw a red-haired woman: Malgven, Queen of the North, standing in front of him. She told him, "I know you. You are courageous and skillful in fighting. My husband is old; his sword has rusted. You and I are going to kill him, then go to your country of Cornouaille." They killed the king of the North and went on Morvarc'h ("sea horse" in Breton), Malgven's magical horse. It was black, spit fire from its nostrils and was able to gallop on the sea. They caught up with Gradlon's vessels, but the approach of Morvarc'h caused the fleet to flee. «b»The return trip and the Dahut's birth«/b» Gradlon and Malgven remained long at sea, so Malgven gave birth to a daughter, Dahut. According to some versions of the story, giving birth killed the queen. According to other versions, she didn't die but, some time after the birth of Dahut, she asked Gradlon what he thought about Dahut. He responded "I already cherish her as I cherish you." Malgven announced that Dahut's face would keep the appearance of hers, so she would not be forgotten by him, because it was time for her to return to her world. She added that they would see an island shortly after, and Gradlon should let her go there; otherwise they could never see the earth again. Soon after, they saw an island and there Malgven was left alone. Shortly after, Gradlon arrived in Cornouaille with Dahut, but without Malgven. «b»Ys«/b» Later, Dahut had a key role in the story of Ys, a city built below sea level and protected by a gate that kept the sea out. Dahut turned the city into a place of sin and debauchery. One night she stole the key to the gate from her sleeping father and drunkenly opened the gate. Gradlon awoke and rescued his daughter from the drowning city on his magical horse, but her sins kept dragging them into the sea before he could reach land. In the end Saint Winwaloe told him to drop his daughter. She was swallowed by the sea, becoming a form of siren or morgen, luring men to destruction. Gradlon re-established his rule in Quimper, before eventually retiring as a hermit. «b»Descendants«/b» At Gradlon's death, his son Salomon the 1st succeeded him, then his grandson, Aldrien. Dahut appears again in the Arthurian legend of King Mark. «b»Historicity«/b» According to the sources, several historical Gradlons existed: Gradlon Meur is cited in a cartulary of Landévennec, but there is also a Gradlon Flam and Gradlon Plueneuor (Plonéour). They are generally classified as consul, which can be understood as the count - as the Latin texts translate the Breton title of mac'htiern by "tyrant". They would have most likely lived between the 5th and 9th centuries. In the Gallo-Roman era, the capital of Osismes - predecessors of Cornouailles, Trégorrois and Léonards - was Carhaix. And if there was a city on the Odet it was not yet Quimper, but a little downstream in the current Locmaria quarter.

- LifeSketch: Cutha also known as Cuthwulf was the son of Cynric, King of Wessex from 534 to 560, and brother of Ceawlin, King of Wessex from 560 to 592. Cutha is also known as Cuthwuf, Cutha ap Cynric, Cuthwulf ap Cynric. Cutha's exact date of birth and the name of his mother are not known. He was likely born about 551 in Wessex, also known as Gewisse. Cutha is recorded as the father of 2 sons: Ceol and Ceolwulf. In 592 Cutha's son Ceol took the throne of Wessex (Gewisse) from his uncle Ceawlin, Cutha's brother. No mention of Cutha is made at this time so it would be easy to presume he died before this. The Foundation for Medieval Genealogy indicates he died after 597 when his son Ceolwulf became king. It could be that Cutha had a quelling influence on his sons. That Ceol exiled his uncle's family, instead of outright killing them, because of his father's influence. However, several different sources for the Battle of Fethanleag state that in 584 Ceawlin and Cutha fought the Britons in Fethanleag and that Cutha was slain, that Ceawlin returned home in anger. This explains why there was no mention of Cutha in 592 and in reading the reference to Cutha for 597 it identifies Ceolwulf as the son of Cutha but does not appear to specifically say that Cutha was there in 597. The Foundation for Medieval Genealogy also fails to even name Ceawlin as a son of Cynric, identifying only one son of Cynric: Cutha. This places doubt on anything the Foundation for Medieval Genealogy says in regards to this family. For Ceawlin is firmly established as a son of Cynric. Given this information, it is reasonable to deduce that Cutha did in deed die in battle at Fethanleag in 584. Very little is known about Cutha, some sources do not even record him as a son of Cynric, only identifying Ceawlin. Obviously though Ceawlin had to have a brother or sister, for it is clearly stated that when Ceol took the throne and forced Ceawlin into exile that he was Ceawlin's nephew. Most genealogies identify Cutha as one of the sons of Cynric. See 'The House of Wessex Family Tree" at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_monarchs_of_Wessex#Genealogy ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Foundation for Medieval Genealogy Cutha also known as Cuthwulf is recorded as the son of Cynric and the father of Ceol and Ceolwulf. CYNRIC (-[560]). The family relationship, if any, between Cerdic and Cynric is reported differently in different sources. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that "two princes, Cerdic and Cynric his son" landed in Britain in 495 at "Certicesora" and fought "against the Welsh" on the same day[1235]. According to the West Saxon Genealogical Regnal List, Cynric was the son of Creoda, son of Cerdic, although if this was correct it would be unlikely that the reports in the Chronicle of Cerdic and Cynric having operated together over nearly forty years were accurate. Creoda is not mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that "Cerdic and Cynric slew a Welsh king…Nazaleod" in 508[1236]. He ruled from [519] as CYNRIC King of the West Saxons. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that in 519 "Cerdic and Cynric obtained the kingdom of the West Saxons"[1237]. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that in 519 "Cerdic and Cynric" fought "the Britons" at "Cerdicesford"[1238]. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that in 527 "Cerdic and Cynric" fought "the Britons" at "Cerdiceslaeg" and in 530 captured the Isle of Wight[1239]. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that "his son Cynric" continued to reign for 26 years after the death of "Cerdic" in 534[1240]. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that "Cynric" fought the Britons in 552 at "Searoburh" [Old Sarum][1241]. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that "Cynric and Ceawlin" fought the Britons in 552 at "Beranburh" [Barbury castle][1242]. The date of Cynric's death is based on the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle specifying that "Ceawlin obtained the kingdom of Wessex" in 560[1243]. Roger of Wendover records the death in 559 of "Kenricus rex occidentalium Saxonum"[1244]. Henry of Huntingdon records that "Certic primus rex Westsexe…Kinric filius eius" ruled for twenty-six years[1245]. If these dates of all the events reported in this paragraph are correct, Cynric would have had what appears to be an impossibly long active career, which throws much of the information into doubt. One child: a) CUTHA [II] (-after 597). The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle names "Cutha son of Cynric" when recording the accession of the former’s son "Ceolwulf" in 597[1246]. [Two] children: i) [CEOL [Ceolric] (-597). The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records in 591 that "Ceol" ("Ceolric" in manuscript E) reigned five years[1247]. Florence of Worcester names "Ceol filius Cuthwlfi, fratris Regis Ceaulini" when recording his accession[1248]. William of Malmesbury also names Ceol as son of Cutha (who, from the context, is assumed to be the person named in the present document as Cutha [II])[1249], but this relationship is shown in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle only in one addition to one manuscript which purports to state the ancestry of King Cynegils[1250]. He succeeded in 591 as CEOL King of Wessex. The date of his death is assumed from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle recording that "Ceolwulf" began to reign in Wessex in 597[1251]. Ceol was allegedly the father of Cynegils King of Wessex: an addition in manuscript A of the Chronicle, under 611 notes that "that Cynegils was the son of Ceol, the son of Cutha, the son of Cynric"[1252], although it is not clear whether this was contemporary with the main part of the paragraph or a later addition. According to another part of the Chronicle, King Cynegils’s father was Cuthwine, supposedly son of King Ceawline: a later paragraph, under 688, outlining the descent of King Ine, says that "Cynegils" was the son of "Cuthwine, the son of Ceawlin, the son of Cynric"[1253]. ii) CEOLWULF (-[611]). The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that "Ceolwulf…son of Cutha, son of Cynric…" began to reign in Wessex in 597, adding that he "ever fought and made war against the Angles…the Welsh…the Picts or…the Scots"[1254]. William of Malmesbury names Ceolwulf as son of Cutha[1255]. He succeeded in 597 as CEOLWULF King of Wessex. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that "Ceolwulf fought against the South Saxons" in 607[1256]. The date of his death is assumed from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle recording that "Cynegils succeeded to the kingdom of Wessex" in 611[1257]. Roger of Wendover records the death of "Ceolwulfo rege occidentalium Saxonum" in 610[1258]. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Do not know the origin of the following information but, someone thought it important enough to record it here. I have found no record that Cutha was ever actually King of Wessex, however. His supposed reign would have conflicted with that of his brother, Ceawlin, who ruled from 560 to 592 when Cutha's son Ceol took the throne by force. Cutha, King of Wessex was born circa 540.1 He was the son of Cynric, King of Wessex. He died in 584. He gained the title of King Cutha of Wessex. - Occupation: In Wales, he governed most of the north (as his epithet, King of North Wales, describes), although the lands under his direct rule correspond pretty accurately to the later kingdom of Gwynedd. His father and grandfather bore Roman names so it is very likely that they were Roman confederate allies., ABT 450, Gwynedd, Cymru
- Title Of Nobility: King of Cardiganshire
- LifeSketch: Cunedda ap Edern or Cunedda Wledig (fl. 5th century) was an important early Welsh leader, and the progenitor of the royal dynasty of Gwynedd. Background and life The name Cunedda (spelled Cunedag in the AD 828 pseudo-history Historia Brittonum) derives from the Brythonic word Cuno-dagos, meaning "Good Hound/Warrior" or "Having Good Hounds/Warriors". His genealogy is traced back to a grandfather named Padarn Beisrudd, which literally translates as Paternus of the "red tunic". One traditional interpretation identifies Padarn as a Roman (or Romano-British) official of reasonably high rank who had been placed in command of Votadini troops stationed in the Clackmannanshire region of Scotland in the 380s or earlier by the Emperor Magnus Maximus. Alternatively, he may have been a frontier chieftain who was granted Roman military rank, a practice attested elsewhere along the empire's borders at the time. In all likelihood, Padarn's command in Scotland was assumed after his death by his son, Edern (Latin: Æturnus), and then passed to Edern's son, Cunedda. According to Old Welsh tradition contained in section 62 the Historia Brittonum, Cunedda came from Manaw Gododdin, the modern Clackmannanshire region of Scotland: Maelgwn, the great king, was reigning among the Britons in the region of Gwynedd, for his ancestor, Cunedag, with his sons, whose number was eight, had come previously from the northern part, that is from the region which is called Manaw Gododdin, one hundred and forty-six years before Maelgwn reigned. And with great slaughter they drove out from those regions the Scotti who never returned again to inhabit them. Cunedda and his forebears led the Votadini against Pictish and Irish incursions south of Hadrian's Wall. Sometime after this, the Votadini troops under Cunedda relocated to North Wales to defend the region from Irish invasion, specifically the Uí Liatháin, as mentioned in the Historia Brittonum. Cunedda established himself in Wales, in the territory of the Venedoti, which would become the centre of the kingdom of Gwynedd. Two explanations for these actions have been suggested: either Cunedda was acting under the orders of Maximus (or Maximus's successors) or Vortigern, the high king of the British in the immediate post-Roman era. The range of dates (suggested by Peter Bartrum) runs from the late 370s, which would favour Maximus, to the late 440s, which would favour Vortigern. The suggestion that Cunedda was operating under instructions from Rome has been challenged by several historians. David Dumville dismisses the whole concept of transplanting foederati from Scotland to Wales in this manner, given that the political state of sub-Roman Britain would probably have made it impossible to exercise such centralised control by the 5th century. As Maximus himself was dead by the end of 388, and Constantine III departed from Britain with the last of Rome's military forces in 407, less than a generation later, it is doubtful that Rome had much direct influence over the military actions of the Votadini, either through Maximus or any other emissary, for any significant length of time. Maximus (or his successors) may have handed over control of the British frontiers to local chieftains at an earlier date; with the evacuation of the fort at Chester (which Mike Ashley, incidentally, argues is most likely where Cunedda established his initial base in the region, some years later) in the 370s, he may have had little option. Given that the archaeological record demonstrates Irish settlement on the Llyn Peninsula however and possible raids as far west as Wroxeter by the late 4th century, it is difficult to conceive of either Roman or allied British forces having presented an effective defence in Wales. Academics such as Sheppard Frere have argued that it may have been Vortigern who, adopting elements of Roman statecraft, moved the Votadini south, just as he invited Saxon settlers to protect other parts of the island. According to this version of events, Vortigern would have instructed Cunedda and his Votadini subjects to move to Wales in response to the aforementioned Irish incursions no later than the year 442, when Vortigern's former Saxon allies rebelled against his rule. Cunedda's supposed great grandson Maelgwn Gwynedd was a contemporary of Gildas, and according to the Annales Cambriae died in 547. The reliability of early Welsh genealogies is not uncontested however, and many of the claims regarding the number and identity of Cunedda's heirs did not surface until as late as the 10th century. Nonetheless, if we accept this information as valid, calculating back from this date suggests the mid-5th-century interpretation. Of Cunedda personally even less is known. Probably celebrated for his strength, courage, and ability to rally the beleaguered Romano-British forces of the region, he eventually secured a politically advantageous marriage to Gwawl, daughter of Coel Hen, the Romano-British ruler of Eboracum (modern York), and is claimed to have had nine sons. The early kingdoms of Ceredigion and Meirionnydd were supposedly named after his two sons Ceredig and Meirion. Allt Cunedda The hill of Allt Cunedda close to Cydweli in Carmarthenshire is probably associated with this Cunedda and suggests his campaigns against the Irish extended from Gwynedd into south west Wales. Amateur excavations of this site in the 19th century revealed an Iron Age hill fort and several collapsed stone cists containing the buried but well preserved skeletons of several men with formidable physical proportions. At least one of these was found in the seated position and another buried beneath a massive stone "shield" who had apparently been killed by a head wound. The bones appear to have been sent to various museums and have all since been woefully lost. One of the tumuli was known locally as Banc Benisel and was reputedly the grave of a Sawyl Penuchel, a legendary King of the Britons presumably from late Iron Age Britain. His epithet Penuchel or Ben Uchel means "high head" perhaps on account of his height. According to the Welsh Life of Saint Cadoc, a king named Sawyl Penuchel held court at Allt Cunedda. Confusingly, Geoffrey of Monmouth, in his Historia Regum Britanniae (1136), uses the name Samuil Penessil for a legendary pre-Roman king of Britain, preceded by Redechius and succeeded by Pir. Whether this is the same king and Cadoc's tale is just revisiting an old folk memory, this a different man of the same name, or simply an error by the composer of the Life, is unclear. Much of the archaeological evidence was inadvertently destroyed by J. Fenton's expedition in 1851 and it is not known if all the great men buried at this site were contemporaries or if there were successive burials on a site with long term cultural significance. The name connection with Cunedda makes it tempting to speculate that the great Cunedda himself may have been buried at this site; a site whose Iron Age notoriety may well have maintained a cultural importance well after the end of the Roman period and into the Dark Ages. The folk memories of people living near Allt Cunedda that were recorded by the Victorian antiquarians suggests an enduring respect for this site of deep historic importance. - LifeSketch: Gwriad ap Elidyr From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Gwriad ap Elidyr (English: Gwriad son of Elidyr) or Gwriad Manaw was a late-8th century figure in Great Britain. Very little is known of him, and he chiefly appears in the historical record in connection to his son Merfyn Frych, King of Gwynedd from around 825 to 844 and founder of the Merfynion dynasty. Background Almost nothing is known about Gwriad's background. He married Esyllt ferch Cynan, daughter of Cynan Dindaethwy, King of Gwynedd. Their son Merfyn Frych later became the first king of Gwynedd known not to have come from the dynasty of its founder Cunedda. Merfyn evidently claimed the throne through his mother rather than through Gwriad, and bolstered this atypical matrilineal claim through his own power and reputation.[1] [2] According to the genealogies from Jesus College MS 20, Gwriad was the son of a certain Elidyr and was a descendant of Llywarch Hen and Coel Hen, rulers from the Hen Ogledd or "Old North", the Brittonic-speaking parts of what is now southern Scotland and northern England.[2][3 ] The bardic poetry indicates that Merfyn was "from the land of Manaw", a Brittonic place name applied to several districts, including Manaw Gododdin, the area around the Firth of Forth. This locale in the Hen Ogledd would be consistent with Gwriad's descent from Llywarch's northern lineage.[4] An origin in Manaw Gododdin was supported by scholars such as William Forbes Skene and John Edward Lloyd.[5] Other scholars connect Gwriad to the Isle of Man, known in Welsh as Ynis Manaw rather than Manaw Gododdin, especially following the 1896 discovery of an 8th- or 9th-century cross on man inscribed Crux Guriat ("Cross of Gwriad").[5][ 6] Lloyd wrote that this discovery "undoubtedly strengthens the case" for a Manx origin.[5] John Rhys suggested that Gwriad may have taken refuge on the Isle of Man during the bloody dynastic struggle in Gwynedd between Cynan Dindaethwy and Hywel prior to Merfyn's accession to the throne.[7] Still other locations for "Manaw" have been suggested, including Ireland, Galloway and Powys.[1] Rhys further noted that the Welsh Triads mention a "Gwryat son of Gwryan in the North", counted among the "Three Kings who were the Sons of Strangers", which he suggests is a reference to the father of Merfyn.[7][8] However, this conflicts with the Jesus College MS 20 pedigree, in which Gwriad's father is Elidyr. James E. Fraser suggests that the Gwriad of the Triad is instead to be identified with the King Guret of Alt Clut recorded by the Annals of Ulster as dying in 658.[9] **************************** Our royal, titled, noble and commoner ancestors Gwiard, King of Manaw1 Last Edited 4 Apr 2020 M, #9963 Father Elydyr, Prince of Deheubarth Gwiard, King of Manaw married Eisyllt, Queen of Wales, daughter of Cynan, King of Gwynedd and Matilda of Flint. - LifeSketch: Conan Meriadoc, 'King' of Dumnonia & Brittany (Born c.AD 305) (Welsh: Cynan; Latin: Conanus; English: Conan) Conan was the son of Octavius the Old's brother, Gerontius, (or Octavius himself according to the Dream of Macsen Wledig). He had expected to inherit his uncle's position of influence in what is now Wales, until his cousin, Helena, married the Roman citizen, Magnus Maximus. Originally, Conan was considerably put out by this man's rise to power and he organised a rebellion against him, aided by Picts & Scots. However, being defeated, Conan became great friends with his rival and travelled with Maximus to the continent to help him become Emperor of the West. He was given control over Armorica (modern Brittany) as a reward for killing the previous holder of the title. His new province, was well settled by his men-at-arms, however they lacked wives. Therefore, in order to populate the area, he sent to his uncle's old ally, Donaut of Dumnonia for numerous Cornish ladies. Conan proposed to cement the alliance of their two peoples by marrying Donaut's daughter, Ursula. Though Donaut was delighted at the match, Ursula had her heart set on a life devoted only to God. She agreed to the marriage, on the condition that she first be allowed to go on a pilgrimage throughout Europe. Conan appears to have joined her in Rome, where the two must have been married, probably by Pope Cyriacus himself. He apparently did not travel to Cologne where Ursula died. In later years, he gained considerable influence in Dumnonia after the death of his father-in-law. The Governorship of Armorica & Dumnonia was united for only a short time. As his second wife, Conan married Dareca of Ireland, a supposed, though unlikely, sister of St. Patrick. Upon Conan's death, around AD 395, control of each region fell to the sons of his two marriages, Gadeon and Gradlon.

- LifeSketch: Maredudd ap Gruffydd (1130–1155) was a prince of the kingdom of Deheubarth in Southwest Wales. Maredudd was the fifth of six sons of Gruffydd ap Rhys, and the third of four by Gwenllian ferch Gruffydd;[1] he also had two older half-brothers, Anarawd and Cadell, by Gruffydd's first wife. He was only six years old when his mother and brothers Morgan and Maelgwyn were killed at Cydweli. His father died the same year. At the age of 16 he is recorded helping his half-brother Cadell, now King of Deheubarth, to expel the Normans from Ceredigion. He then successfully defended Carmarthen castle against a Norman assault, hurling down the scaling ladders. In 1151 he took a prominent part in winning back the northern part of Ceredigion from Gwynedd. The same year Cadell was attacked by a force of Normans while out hunting and left for dead. He survived, but was so badly injured that the effective rule of Deheubarth fell on Maredudd. In 1153 Cadell left on a pilgrimage to Rome, leaving Maredudd as King of Deheubarth. Maredudd died two years later in 1155, leaving the throne of Deheubarth to his younger brother Rhys, later known as The Lord Rhys.

- LifeSketch: Merfyn Frych seized control of Gwynedd in 825 on the death of Hywel ap Rhodri Molwynog, though he may have held power in Anglesey since 818. Merfyn was not a member of the traditional dynasty of Gwynedd, the direct male line of Maelgwn Gwynedd, and his succession marked the start of a new dynasty. His claim was apparently based on the fact that his mother, Esyllt, was the daughter of Cynan Dindaethwy ap Rhodri and the niece of Hywel ap Rhodri. According to bardic tradition, Merfyn came "from the land of Manaw", but it is uncertain whether this refers to the Isle of Man ("Ynys Manaw" in Welsh) or to Manaw Gododdin, the area around the Firth of Forth. It would seem likely that it was the latter on account of the probability he would be a blood relative of Cunedda, the founder of the Gwynedd dynasty, who was a prince of Manaw Gododdin. On the other hand there is an inscription "Crux Guriat" on a cross in the Isle of Man. This cross has been dated to the eighth or ninth century and might possibly refer to Merfyn's father. Merfyn allied himself to the royal house of Powys by marrying Nest, daughter of Cadell ap Brochwel and sister of Cyngen king of Powys. [Actually, according to The History of The Princes, The Lords Marcher, and the Ancient Nobility of Powys Fadog, Nest verch Cadell is Merfyn's mother, not his wife.] He had a reputation as a patron of scholars; for example the Historia Britonum attributed to Nennius is thought to have been written in Gwynedd during his reign, possibly by request of Merfyn himself. A manuscript found at Bamberg gives a further insight into Merfyn's scholarly interests. Irish visitors to his court were given a cryptogram which could only be solved by transposing the letters from Latin into Greek. Despite Danish raids, Merfyn was able to maintain his position and on his death in 844 to hand the Kingdom over intact to his son Rhodri the Great. He is said to have died in battle, but the circumstances are not recorded. His descendants came to rule not only Gwynedd but also Powys and Deheubarth and played a major role in Welsh politics until the end of Welsh independence in 1283. Powys was united with Gwynedd when king Merfyn Frych of Gwynedd married princess Nest, the sister of king Cyngen of Powys, [Actually, according to The History of The Princes, The Lords Marcher, and the Ancient Nobility of Powys Fadog, Nest verch Cadell is Merfyn's mother, not his wife.] the last representative of the Gwertherion dynasty. With the death of Cyngen in 855 Rhodri became king of Powys, having inherited Gwynedd the year before. This formed the basis of Gwynedd's continued claims of overlordship over Powys for the next 443 years.

- Title Of Nobility: He appears to have become king of the Catuvellauni, ruling from Verlamion (the site of modern-day St Albans).
- Reigned from 48 BC - 20 BC: King of Briton
- LifeSketch: Tasciovanus was a historical king of the Catuvellauni tribe before the Roman conquest of Britain. «b»History«/b» Tasciovanus is known only through numismatic evidence. He appears to have become king of the Catuvellauni c. 20 BC, ruling from Verlamion (the site of modern-day St Albans). He is believed to have moved the tribal capital to that site from an earlier settlement, near modern-day Wheathampstead. For a brief period c. 15-10 BC he issued coins from Camulodunum (Colchester), apparently supplanting Addedomarus of the Trinovantes. After this he once again issued his coins from Verlamion, now bearing the legend RICON, for Rigonos, Common Brittonic for "great/divine/legitimate king". Some of his coins bear other abbreviated names such as "DIAS", "SEGO" and "ANDOCO": these are generally considered to be the names of co-rulers or subordinate kings, but may instead be mint-marks. He died c. AD 9, succeeded by his son Cunobeline, who ruled primarily from Camulodunum. Another son, Epaticcus, expanded his territory westwards into the lands of the Atrebates. «b»Medieval traditions«/b» A genealogy preserved in the medieval Welsh manuscript Harleian 3859 (see Harleian genealogies) contains three generations which read "Caratauc map Cinbelin map Teuhant". This is the equivalent of "Caratacus, son of Cunobelinus, son of Tasciovanus", putting the three historical figures in the correct order, although the wrong historical context, the degree of linguistic change suggesting a long period of oral transmission. The remainder of the genealogy contains the names of a sequence of Roman emperors, and two Welsh mythological figures, Guidgen (Gwydion) and Lou (Lleu). He appears in Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae (1136) as the legendary king Tenvantius, son of Lud. When his father died, he and his older brother Androgeus were still minors, so the kingship of Britain was given to their uncle Cassibelanus. Tenvantius was made Duke of Cornwall, and participated in his uncle's defence of Britain against Julius Caesar. Androgeus went to Rome with Caesar, so when Cassibelanus died, Tenvantius succeeded him as king. He was in turn succeeded by his son Kimbelinus (Cunobeline), who had been brought up at the court of Augustus. In Middle Welsh versions of Geoffrey's Historia his name appears as Teneufan and Trahayant. He under the name of Tenewan ap Lludd (Geoffrey of Monmouth's version) is claimed as a paternal ancestor in the Mostyn Ms. 117 by the Mathrafal Dynasty and therefore subsequently the Kings of Rhwng Gwy Y Hafren also.
