He supported King Robert I of Scotland (Bruce) in his initial attempt to seize power. He was captured at the Battle of Methven and died in an English dungeon. Notes Joined Robert Bruce in his claim to the throne of Scotland, and was captured by the English in 1306 and he died still in custody before 1330. The successful termination of the War of Independence at the battle of Bannockburn restored the earldom to the Stewarts, and it was reunited under the younger son of Alexander, Murdach, the eighth Earl, who enjoyed the title after the death of his brother Alan, the seventh Earl. Family Alan, Earl of Menteith married Marjory or Margery, who has been shown to have been a daughter of Colbán, Earl of Fife by his wife Anne Durward.[3] They had two sons, one of whom, Alan, succeeded his father as Earl when a minor.[4] http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/SCOTTISH%20NOBILITY%20LATER.htm#_To... - Father: Walter Stewart of MENTEITH
- Mother: Mary MENTIETH Countess Of Mentieth
- Birth: 1240, Bonkyl, Berwickshire, Scotland
- Also known as: Alexander Stewart 6th Earl of Monteith
- Title Of Nobility: 6th Earl of Menteith
- LifeSketch: Alexander was the eldest son and heir of Walter Bailloch Stewart and Mary I, Countess of Menteith and was the Mormaer or Earl of Menteith succeeding his mother the de jure countess. The first mention of him in records is with his brother John de Menteith in a compact dated on 20 September 1286, at Turnberry, Carrick, between Bruce and the Stewarts. In another writ, of uncertain date, granted by their father to Kilwinning Abbey, he and his brother are styled Alexander and John de Menteith. Alexander joined with his father in a charter granting the church of Kippen to the Cambuskenneth Abbey situated within the earldom as a place of burial; the writ being dated 1286. He was appointed the Sheriff of Dumbarton in 1288. Prior to succeeding his father, Alexander was at Norham in 1291, and was among those who swore fealty to Edward I. Alexander was with his brother John at the Battle of Dunbar on 27 April 1296, and fled to Dunbar Castle where he and others were taken prisoner and he was committed to the Tower of London. His detention was not long, however, and he was liberated after promising to serve the English King, meeting with him at Elgin 27 July 1296. He repeated this promise, and swore fealty at Berwick a month later, on 28 August, as Alexander Comes Meneteth. Alexander then gave over two of his sons, Alan and Peter, as hostages. Alexander seems to have retired from public life after this, tending only to his family affairs. He died before 1306. Family He married a lady named Matilda (Maud), a daughter of Robert, Earl of Strathearn, and together they had the following children: Alan, Earl of Menteith, who succeeded his father as Earl. Peter, who in 1296 was a hostage in England with his brother Alan. He accompanied King Edward to Flanders, and took part in the French campaign of 1297, where he may have been killed. Murdach, who became Earl of Menteith. Alexander, styled as brother of Murdach in a charter to Gilbert Drummond. Malise, who had a charter from Robert I of the lands of Ballygillachy. Margaret de Menteith, wife of Alexander de Abernethy. Ellen, recently identified as the wife of William Ferrers, 1st Baron Ferrers of Groby (d. 20 March 1324/5).

- Title Of Nobility: Earl of Menteith

- LifeSketch: Walter was a younger son of Walter Stewart, 3rd High Steward of Scotland, and his wife Beatrix of Angus, daughter of Gilchrist, Earl of Angus.[1] In 1258-59, Walter accompanied Louis IX of France on his Crusade, according to tradition.[1] After the death of King Alexander II of Scotland he was aligned with the "English faction", and in 1255 secured the persons of the young King and Queen, but he was not at this time allowed to a share in the government.[2] About 1260, when Isabella, Countess of Menteith and her husband Walter Comyn, Lord of Badenoch were forced to leave Scotland, the magnates of Scotland arranged the marriage of her sister, Mary, Countess of Menteith, to Walter Stewart, who took possession of the lands and title, with questions of legal ownership being reserved.[1] He was certainly using the title of earl (jure uxoris) before 17 April 1261, when he was witness to a grant to the Paisley Abbey.[2] In the following year Dubhghall mac Suibhne granted to the earl the lands of Skipnish, Killislate, and others, being that part of Kintyre called South Knapdale and the parish of Kilcalmonell. Following on this, the Earl granted the church of Kilcalmonell at Clachan to the monks of Paisley. He also made grants to Kilwinning Abbey of churches in Knapdale, which show that he had possession of North Knapdale also.[3] About 1263 the earl was Sheriff of Ayr, and aided in making preparations to repel the expected invasion of King Haakon IV of Norway.[1] He and his brother Alexander Stewart, 4th High Steward of Scotland were joint commanders of the Scots in the Battle of Largs.[4] The earl was Sheriff of Dumbarton in 1271 until 1288. On 25 July 1281 he was one of the witnesses to and guarantors of the marriage contract of the Princess Margaret with Eirik II of Norway. He, Countess Mary, and a party of Scots barons traveled to Norway accompanying the princess and her dowry of fourteen thousand marks.[5] In 1285 he and his Countess were again attacked by the rival claimants William Comyn and his wife Isabella, their claim having been in 1282 pressed upon King Alexander III of Scotland by the English King, and in a Parliament at Scone it was decided that the earldom should be divided into two portions.[6] Black and white illustration of a mediaeval seal Seal of Walter Stewart Earl of Menteith, 1292. A shield vearing a fess cheque, with a labe of five points as a difference. Above the shield is a crescent. On each side of the shield appear three projections resembling eagles' feet. "S' Walteri Senescalli Comt' de Menetet." One half was retained by Walter Stewart, with the title of earl, and the other half was erected into a barony for William, the son of John the Red Comyn, and his wife, a daughter of the elder countess by her first husband.[6] The component parts of the earldom which remained to Walter Stewart are not known. The death of King Alexander in 1286 threw the kingdom again into confusion, and during the rivalry which ensued between the parties of Bruce and Balliol, the Earl of Menteith supported the cause of Bruce. Walter was a party to the Turnberry Bond with his sons Alexander and John and the Bruces, which was signed at Turnberry Castle on 20 September 1286. In 1289 he was present at Birgham, and approved of the marriage proposed between Prince Edward of England and the young Margaret, Maid of Norway as she was called, the heiress of the Scottish Crown. Her unhappy death renewed the contest between Bruce and Balliol, and when it was proposed that the King of England should arbitrate, Menteith was one of those named by Bruce as his commissioners. He was present at Norham on 20 November 1292 when the new king John Balliol swore fealty to Edward I of England. This is the last certain record of him, as although letters were addressed by the English King to Walter Stewart, Earl of Menteith, on 29 June 1294, it is not clear that he was then alive. He may even have been dead by 10 February 1293, when Balliol's Parliament directed the lands of Knapdale belonging to the earl to be incorporated in the sheriffdom of Lorn under Alexander of Argyll. View of the Chapter House of Inchmahome Priory; effigies on the right represent the Countess Mary and Walter, Earl of Menteith. The Countess Mary predeceased her husband, probably before 1286.[7] Their tombstone is preserved in the Priory of Inchmahome, bearing the effigies of husband and wife, the former bearing on his shield the Stewart fess chequy with a label of five points, a device which also appears on his seal of arms in the Public Record Office, London. Family In 1258 Walter married Mary I, Countess of Menteith. Walter, third son to the 3rd High Steward, took the name of Menteith after succeeding to the Earldom of Menteith in right of his wife, and differenced the Stewart arms by changing the fess to a bend and the Azure squares of the check to Sable. They had two sons as issue, both of whom assumed the surname Menteith[8] and at least one daughter. Alexander, Earl of Menteith, who succeeded to the earldom.[9] Sir John de Menteith, notorious as the betrayer of Sir William Wallace.[9] Elena Stewart, who married John Drummond, 8th. Thane of Lenox. - LifeSketch: Mary I, Countess of Menteith From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The tomb effigies of Mary and her husband, Walter Bailloch, at Inchmahome Priory in Menteith. Maire inghean Mhuireadhaich or Mary, daughter of Muireadhach II, Mormaer of Menteith, was Countess of Menteith, successor to her sister Isabella (Iosbail). She inherited the title from her father, and married Walter Bailloch, son of Walter Stewart, 3rd High Steward of Scotland. By the time of the death of Walter Comyn, Lord of Badenoch, jure uxoris Earl of Menteith in 1258, she may have already been married. In 1260, Isabella was arrested (along with her new husband, an English knight called John Russell) for the poisoning of her late husband; by the month of April 1261, Walter and Mary were ruling the province as Count and Countess. She died before her husband, but the exact year is not known. Her husband may have been alive as late as 1294. She and he had two sons, Alexander, the next ruler of the province, and John, the famous betrayer of William Wallace. - Father: Alfred of WESSEX
- Mother: Ealhswith of Mercia
- Birth: ABT 869, Wessex, England
- Also known as: Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians
- Also known as: Ethelfled, Lady of the Mercians
- Also known as: Æthelflæd Alfredsdottir
- Also known as: Ethelfled fitz Alfred
- Marriage and Queen of Mercia: Æthelred became Lord of the Mercians (King) about 881, when Æthelflæd married him about 886 she became 'Lady of the Mercians' (Queen). Æthelflæd was 15 or 16 at the time of their marriage and Æthelred was 'considerably older'., 886, Wantage, Wessex
- St Oswald's Priory: St Oswald's Priory was founded by Æthelflæd and her husband Æthelred in the late 880s or the 890s. Both Æthelflæd and Æthelred are buried there., ABT 890, Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England
- ONLY ONE CHILD: Æthelflæd and her husband Æthelred had only one child, Ælfwynn whose birth was said to have almost killed Æthelflæd. According to William of Malmsbury, Æthelflæd took measures to make sure she had no more children., BET 886 AND 903, Glouster, Gloucestershire, Mercia, England
- FOSTERED ÆTHELSTAN, HER NEPHEW: It is believed that after the death of his mother and his fathers remarriage, Æthelstan went to live in Mercia, where his Aunt Æthelflæd and Uncle Æthelred continued his royal education. It appears that he looked upon them as loving parents and made a 'pact of paternal piety' with Æthelred.
- RESTORED TAMWORTH AND MADE IT HER PRINCIPAL RESIDENCE: Tamworth once the capital of Mercia was destroyed in 874. In 913 Æthelflæd rebuilt the ruined town, constructed a burh to defend it, and made Tamworth her principal residence. It is there that she died in 918., 913, Tamworth, Staffordshire, Mercia
- Myrcna hlædige, "Lady of the Mercians", Solitary Female Ruler: On her husband's death in 911, Æthelflæd became the sole ruler of Mercia. She is the only case of a female ruler of a kingdom in Anglo-Saxon history and her succession was "one of the most unique events in early medieval history"., BET 911 AND 918, Mercia, England
- BURIAL AT GLOUCESTER SIGNIFICANT: Æthelflæd's choice of burial is seen as significant. Had she been buried at Winchester it would have acceded Mercia's subordination to Wessex, her burial at Repton (traditional for Mercia) would have been seen as a declaration of independence. Her choice of Gloucester, a middle ground, is seen to signify her desire that Mercia maintain it's own identity but work in cooperation with Wessex., JUN 918, St Oswald's Priory, Gloucester, Mercia
- DAUGHTER SUCCEEDED BUT DEPOSED: Upon her death Æthelflæd's daughter Ælfwynn succeeded her to become Lady of Mercia, 18 months later in early December 919 she was deposed, removed from power by her uncle King Edward., BET JUN 918 AND DEC 919, Tamworth, Staffordshire, Mercia
- LifeSketch: Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians, was the eldest daughter of Alfred the Great, king of the Anglo-Saxons and his wife, Ealhswith of Mercia. It is believed she was born about 870. In the mid 880s (between 882 and 887) Æthelflæd married Æthelred, Lord of the Mercians, she would have been about 15, and it is believed he was "considerably" older. In the face of continuous Danish invasions, Æthelred had accepted Alfred's overlordship but the marriage cemented the alliance between Alfred and Mercia. Æthelflæd and Æthelred had one child, a daughter: - Ælfwynn, born about 888. Æthelred fought alongside Alfred until his death in 899 and continued to fight alongside Edward the Elder (his wife's brother) but it is believed his health began to decline between 899 and 909 and Æthelflæd became the de facto ruler of Mercia. Æthelflæd ruled Mercia in her own right as Lady of the Mercians from the time of Æthelred's death in 911 until her own death on 12 June 918. The accession of a female ruler in Mercia is described by the historian Ian Walker as "one of the most unique events in early medieval history". Unlike Æthelred who became ruler of Mercia through necessity, Æthelflæd actually descended from Mercian royalty on her mother's side. Her mother's mother, Eadburh, was a member of the Mercian royal house, probably a descendant of King Coenwulf. Thus Æthelflæd was half-Mercian. Æthelflæd's younger brother Edward married several times and his oldest son Æthelstan, from Edward's first marriage, was raised by his Aunt Æthelflæd in Mercia. Edward and Æthelflæd, working together, had much success against the Danes. It was only because his sister held Mercia so securely against Viking invasion that Edward was able to make such progress against the southern Danes. Æthelflæd led Mercian armies on expeditions, which she planned, and is described as "renowned as a competent war-leader". Æthelflæd successfully repelled Viking invasion after Viking invasion, 3 in 917 alone. In early 918, Æthelflæd gained possession of Leicester without opposition and most of the local Danish army submitted to her. A few months later, the leading men of Danish-ruled York offered to pledge their loyalty to Æthelflæd, Unfortunately, Æthelflæd died on 12 June 918 before they could pledge, and she was succeeded by her daughter Ælfwynn, but in December Edward took personal control of Mercia and carried Ælfwynn off to Wessex. Æthelflæd is buried at Saint Oswald's Priory in Gloucester.

- Also known as: emma of france
- Title Of Nobility: Princess of the Franks
- LifeSketch: Foundation for Medieval Genealogy EMMA . "Emma Francorum regis filia et regis Eadbaldi copula" subscribed her husband's 618 charter. Although Emma seems an unlikely name for a Merovingian princess, given the more complex names which are typical of the family, Settipani suggests that it is the diminutive of a name containing a root similar to "Ermen-", like Ermenberga or Ermentrudis, which would also provide an explanation for the root "Eormen-" in the name of her son. Stenton says there seems no doubt that Eadbald's second wife belonged to the Frankish royal house but that her parentage has not been ascertained. Werner suggests that she was the daughter of Erchinoald, maior domus of Neustria, as the name root "Eorcen-" (similar to "Erchin-") was used among her descendants. Settipani identifies Emma's parents as shown here, seemingly because he eliminates all other possible couples from the known members of the Merovingian royal family from a chronological viewpoint. He prefers a Merovingian ancestry to explain the name "Hlothhere" given to Emma's grandson, similar to "Chlothachar" or "Clotaire", the name of Emma's supposed father. m (after 618) as his second wife, EADBALD King of Kent, son of ÆTHELBERHT King of Kent & his first wife Berta of the Franks (-20 Jan 640). _______________________________________________ Emma (fl. early seventh century) was a member of the Austrasian royal family. She is sometimes identified with the Emma (or Ymma) who married Eadbald of Kent. Emma was a daughter of Theudebert II, King of Austrasia from 595 to 612. He had previously shown little interest in the Kingdom of Kent, but Gregory the Great had written to him in 601, encouraging him to back Paulinus and Mellitus' missionary campaign, which was to be based in Canterbury. In 616, Eadbald came to the throne of Kent. His mother appears to have been Bertha, a Merovingian princess. He came to throne following traditional Germanic religion, but was converted and gave up his first wife who, as his stepmother, was not considered acceptable by the Christian church. This development appears to have initiated closer relations between Kent and the Frankish kingdom. Eadbald made a second marriage, to a Christian named Emma, who is identified in the annals of St Augustine's Abbey as the daughter of a Frankish king - implying Emma, daughter of Theudebert. However, S. E. Kelly, writing in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, holds that the belief that Eadbald married a daughter of Theudebert is the result of confusion between him and Adaloald, King of the Lombards. Kelly gives more credence to a suggestion that Eadbald's wife was the daughter of Erchinoald, the mayor of the palace in the Frankish kingdom of Neustria from 641 to 658. The Emma who married Eadbald had, as described in the Kentish Royal Legend, three children: Eormenred, Eorcenberht and Eanswith. She is known to have died in 642, two years after her husband. She was buried alongside Eadbald in the Church of St Mary, which he had built in the precincts of the monastery of St Peter and St Paul in Canterbury (a church later incorporated within the Norman edifice of St Augustine's). At that time, her relics were probably translated along with Eadbald's for reburial in the south transept ca. A.D. 1087.

- Birth: Rome, Roman Empire
- Title Of Nobility: Empress of the Roman Empire
- House: "gens" Valeria: (Date and Place unknown)
- LifeSketch: Some years after divorcing Aelia Paetina, in 38 or early 39, Claudius married Valeria Messalina, who was his first cousin once removed and closely allied with Caligula's circle. Shortly thereafter, she gave birth to a daughter, Claudia Octavia. A son, first named Tiberius Claudius Germanicus, and later known as Britannicus, was born just after Claudius' accession. This marriage ended in tragedy. The ancient historians allege that Messalina was a nymphomaniac who was regularly unfaithful to Claudius—Tacitus states she went so far as to compete with a prostitute to see who could have the most sexual partners in a night—and manipulated his policies to amass wealth. In 48, Messalina married her lover Gaius Silius in a public ceremony while Claudius was at Ostia. Sources disagree as to whether or not she divorced the Emperor first, and whether the intention was to usurp the throne. Under Roman law, the spouse needed to be informed that he or she had been divorced before a new marriage could take place; the sources state that Claudius was in total ignorance until after the marriage. Scramuzza, in his biography, suggests that Silius may have convinced Messalina that Claudius was doomed, and the union was her only hope of retaining rank and protecting her children. The historian Tacitus suggests that Claudius's ongoing term as Censor may have prevented him from noticing the affair before it reached such a critical point. Whatever the case, the result was the execution of Silius, Messalina, and most of her circle.
- Death: 48, executed by Claudius at Gardens of Lucullus, Rome, Roman Empire

- LifeSketch: Mattathias ben Johanan (Hebrew: מַתִּתְיָהוּ הַכֹּהֵן בֶּן יוֹחָנָן, Matiṯyāhu haKohēn ben Yōḥānān) (died 165 BCE) was a Kohen (Jewish priest) whose role in the religion-driven Maccabean Revolt against the Hellenistic Seleucid Empire is related in the Books of the Maccabees. Mattathias is accorded a central role in the story of Hanukkah and, as a result, is named in the Al HaNissim prayer Jews add to the Birkat Hamazon (grace after meals) and the Amidah during the festival's eight days. The father of Judas Maccabeus, Eleazar Avaran, Simon Thassi, John Gaddi, and Jonathan Apphus, Mattathias was from a rural priestly family from Modi'in. Like all fit priests, he served in the Temple in Jerusalem. He was a son of Johanan, grandson of Simeon, the Hasmonean, and great-grandson of Asmon or Hasmonaeus, a Kohen of the lineage of Joarib for being the fifth grandson of Idaiah, son of Joarib and grandson of Jachin, in turn a descendant of Phinehas, third High Priest of Israel, according to Mattathias' own words in 1 Maccabees. After the Seleucid persecutions began, Mattathias returned to Modi'in. In 167 BCE, when asked by a Seleucid Greek government representative under emperor Antiochus IV Epiphanes to offer sacrifice to the Greek gods, he not only refused to do so, but slew with his own hand the Jew who had stepped forward to do so. He then killed the government official that required the act. Let everyone who has zeal for the Law and who stands by the covenant follow me! — Mattathias, after assassinating the Greek government official, who was forcing him to sacrifice, Septuagint, 1st Maccabees 2:27. Upon the edict for his arrest, he took refuge in the wilderness of Judea with his five sons and called upon all Jews to follow him. Many eventually responded to his call. Mattathias then disappears from historical record, he probably died c. 166 BCE. This was the first step in the Maccabean Revolt, the result of which was Jewish independence, which had not been enjoyed for more than 400 years. The events of the war of the Maccabees form the basis for the holiday of Hanukkah, which is celebrated by Jews on the 25th of Kislev (on the Hebrew calendar, corresponding to mid-November to late December in the Gregorian calendar). The story of the Maccabees can be found in the deuterocanonical books of 1 Maccabees and 2 Maccabees, in Josephus, and in Talmudic references (Shabbat 21b, Shabbat 23a - related to the candles). He is also made reference to in chapter 28 of 1 Meqabyan, a book considered canonical in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. The "Al HaNisim" prayer, added into the Amidah and Birkat Hamazon on Chanukah, refers to the story of the Maccabees and to Mattathias by name
