He was thus later known by the posthumous nickname of An Ferbasach, "The Conqueror".[2] He became the apex and eponym of a dynasty—sometimes called Clann Chináeda—that ruled Scotland from the ninth- to the early eleventh-century. The Fragmentary Annals of Ireland quote a verse lamenting Kenneth's death: "Because Cináed with many troops lives no longer there is weeping in every house; there is no king of his worth under heaven as far as the borders of Rome." Kenneth left at least two sons, Constantine and Áed, who were later kings, and at least two daughters. One daughter married Run, king of Strathclyde, Eochaid being the result of this marriage. Kenneth's daughter Máel Muire married two important Irish kings of the Uí Néill. Her first husband was Aed Finliath of the Cenél nEógain. Niall Glúndub, ancestor of the O'Neill, was the son of this marriage. Her second husband was Flann Sinna of Clann Cholmáin. As the wife and mother of kings, when Máel Muire died in 913, her death was reported by the Annals of Ulster, an unusual thing for the male-centred chronicles of the age. Ref: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenneth_MacAlpin First King of Scotland (Alba). Born Ciniod MacAlpin, son of Alpin MacEochaid, king of Dalriada, his mother is said to have been a daughter of Achalas, King of Argyllshire, or a Pictish princess. His father was killed in battle against the ruling Picts, and MacAlpin took control of Dalriada. The Picts were later decimated by Viking raids, and taking advantage of this weakness, MacAlpin summoned the remaining Earls of Caledonia to his court. A banquet was held, and when the guests, including the Pictish king, were inebriated, MacAlpin's men slaughtered them. Thus the way was clear for him to claim the throne of the two kingdoms, Scots and Picts, and become King of Alba. He ruled from 841 - 859, took the Christian name Kenneth, and moved the capital from Dunndald to Scone. Considered to be astute by some, and ruthless by others, he successfully united the rule of the two kingdoms permanently. He was succeeded by his brother, Donald. - LifeSketch: Cináed mac Ailpín (Modern Gaelic: Coinneach mac Ailpein), commonly Anglicised as Kenneth MacAlpin and known in most modern regnal lists as Kenneth I (810 – 13 February 858) was king of the Alba , earning him the posthumous nickname of An Ferbasach, "The Conqueror". Kenneth's undisputed legacy was to produce a dynasty of rulers who claimed descent from him and was the founder of the dynasty which ruled Alba for much of the medieval period. Kenneth also indirectly created the current day British monarchy; the current representation being Queen Elizabeth II. Kenneth I was King of Dál Riada (841–850), King of the Picts (843–858), and the King of Alba (843–858). He inherited the throne of Dál Riada from his father Alpín mac Echdach, founder of the Alpínid dynasty. Kenneth I conquered the kingdom of the Picts in 843–850 and began a campaign to seize all of Scotland and assimilate the Picts, for which he was posthumously nicknamed An Ferbasach ("The Conqueror"). Forteviot became the capital of his kingdom, and he also fought the Britons of the Kingdom of Strathclyde and the invading Vikings from Scandinavia. Kenneth also relocated relics including the Stone of Scone from an abandoned abbey on Iona to his new domain. Kenneth I is traditionally considered the founder of Scotland, which was then known as Alba, although like his immediate successors, he bore the title of King of the Picts. One chronicle calls Kenneth the first Scottish lawgiver but there is no information about the laws he passed. According to the genealogy of the Scottish kings, Kenneth's father was Alpín mac Echdach, the King of Dál Riada, which existed in what is now western Scotland. Alpín is considered to be the grandson of Áed Find, a descendant of Cenél nGabráin, who ruled in Dál Riada. The Synchronism of the Irish Kings lists Alpín among the kings of Scotland. Modern historians are sceptical about the reign of Alpín in Dál Riada and his relationship with Áed, and believe this misconception is the result of negligence on the part of the scribes in some texts. The genealogy of the kings of Scotland and Dál Riada dates back to an original manuscript that was written during the reign of Malcolm III in the mid-to-late 11th century. The Rawlinson B 502 manuscript provides the following ancestry for Kenneth: ...Cináed son of Alpín son of Eochaid son of Áed Find son of Domangart son of Domnall Brecc son of Eochaid Buide son of Áedán son of Gabrán son of Domangart son of Fergus Mór ... There is very limited information about Alpín, the father of Kenneth. Some of Dál Riada's royal lists, which contain many scribal errors, say he ruled from 841 to 843. The Chronicle of Huntingdon, which was written in the late 13th century, states Alpín defeated the Picts at Galloway but the Picts then defeated him in a battle that took place in the same year, during which Alpín was killed. According to the chronicle, Alpín died on 20 July 834. This date is given in other sources but several researchers claim the date was probably copied from another source and the year of his death was obtained by recalculating the dates in the erroneous royal lists so they attribute Alpín's date of death to 840, or 841. Alpín's mother is likely to have been a Pictish princess, the sister of Constantine I and Óengus II. According to the Pictish tradition, a female representative of the royal dynasty could inherit the crown. This origin gave Kenneth a legitimate claim to the Pictish throne. Kenneth I had at least one brother, Donald I, who succeeded him as king. Kenneth's wife may have been a Pictish princess, however, her name is not known. Together they had 4 possibly 5 children: - Causantín mac Cináeda (r. 862–877), King of Alba - Áed of the White Flowers (r. 877–878), King of Alba - Ingen Cináeda (name unknown), This daughter of Kenneth married Rhun ab Arthgal, the King of Strathclyde, and was the mother of Eochaid (d. 889), King of Strathclyde and King of the Picts. - Máel Muire ingen Cináeda. Married Áed Findliath, High King of Ireland, after his death married Flann Sinna of Clann Cholmáin, King of Mide and also High King of Ireland. - "Ingen Cináeda" Possible 3rd daughter (name also unknown), married Amlaíb Conung, King of Dublin. Death and succession According to the Annals of Ulster, Kenneth died in 858. The Chronicle of the Kings of Alba states he died in February in Forteviot due to a tumour. Historians suggest this date might be 13 February. Kenneth was buried in Iona Abbey. Succession in the kingdom was carried out in the form of tanistry so Kenneth's successor was his brother Donald rather than his eldest son. After the death of Donald I, the sons of Kenneth, Causantín mac Cináeda and Áed mac Cináeda, inherited the crown. The Alpínid dynasty, which ruled Scotland until the beginning of the 11th century, was formed during this period. Contemporaneous Irish annals give Kenneth and his immediate successors the title King of the Picts but do not call him the King of Fortriu, a title that was only given to four Pictish kings who reigned in the 7th to 9th centuries. It is possible the use of the title of King of the Picts was in reference to Kenneth and his immediate successors' claim to all of Pictavia, though there is very little evidence of the extent of their domain. - LifeSketch: Malcolm I of Scotland, also known as Máel Coluim mac Domnaill, was the son of Donald II (Domnall mac Causantín). His father was King of the Alba from 889 to his death in 900. Malcolm is believed to have been born during his reign, the name of his mother is not known. Upon his father's death, Malcolm was too young to rule and his cousin, Causantín mac Áeda, became king (Constantine II). Constantine II reigned as King of Alba from 900 to 943 when he abdicated the throne to Malcolm, and became a monk. Malcolm was not a young man when he became king, in his 40's. He ruled from 943 to his death in 954. Malcolm died in battle against either the Northmen or the men of Moray . He was buried on Iona. As with Malcolm and his father, Constantine's son, Indulf, was still too young to rule when his father abdicated, and upon Malcolm's death he became king. Malcolm's own sons would both eventually become kings of Alba as well. The name of Máel Coluim's wife is not known; however, it is known he had 2 sons: - Dub, King of Scotland, also known as Dub mac Maíl Coluim and Duff, King of Alba 962–967 - Kenneth II of Alba, also known as Cináed mac Maíl Coluim, King of Alba 971–995 -------------------------------- Malcolm I, or Maelcoluim, the son of Donald II, succeeded to the throne in accordance with the tanist system on the death of his cousin Constantine II. He was seen as 'a valiant prince' and a lawgiver and was nicknamed "An Bodhbhdercc, "the Dangerous Red. Malcolm's reign commenced with an attempt to assert Scottish power over the area beyond the River Spey, where considerable parts of the country had long been subject to Viking rule. The kingdom of Northumbria in Northern England had for a long time been under the control of the Viking Princes of Dublin. They recieved support from the Cumbrians and the Picts of Galloway. King Edmund the Elder of England laid Cumbria waste in 945 and blinded two sons of Domnall mac Eógain, king of Strathclyde. He granted Malcolm the lease of Strathclyde on his acknowledgement of Edmund as his overlord and on the understanding that Malcolm should give assistance to the English against the Vikings when required. In 946, King Edmund was succeeded by Edred as King of England. Malcolm honoured his agreement with Edward the Elder and may have been renewed with the new king, Edmund's brother Edred. The Viking Eric Bloodaxe captured York in 948,but the city was reatken by Edred, and when Amlaíb Cuaran again took York in 949-950, Malcolm led a raid into Northumbria, reaching as far south as the Tees, where it was recorded that he took "a multitude of people and many herds of cattle". The Annals of Ulster record a battle in 952 between "the men of Alba and the Britons (of Strathclyde) and the English" against the foreigners, i.e. the Vikings. This battle is not mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, and it is unclear whether it should be related to the expulsion of Amlaíb Cuaran from York or the return of Eric Bloodaxe According to the Pictish chronicle, King Malcolm I was killed in the year 954 in the course of putting down an insurrection by the men of by the men of Moray lead by Cellach, at Kincardine on the banks of the river Forth, in the Mearns (Grampian) and was interred in the traditional burial ground of the Gaelic Kings of Scotland, on Iona. Malcolm was succeeded by his cousin King Indulf. His two sons Dub and Kenneth later ruled as Kings of Scotland. http://www.englishmonarchs.co.uk/macalpin_8.htm It is also believed that Malcom took the throne when his cousin Constantine entered a monastery in the year 943 https://www.britannica.com/biography/Malcolm-I

- LifeSketch: Malcolm (Máel Coluim mac Cináeda) was the son of Kenneth II, King of Alba. He was born about 954, the name of his mother is not known, she was a Princess of Leinster. About 983 (or before) Malcolm married an Irishwoman from Ossory, whose name was not recorded. They are believed to have had 3 daughters: - Bethoc b 894 married Crínán of Dunkeld , Abbot of Dunkeld; became mother of Duncan I - Donalda married Finlay MacRory, King of Moray; became mother of MacBeth - Olith, youngest daughter, married Sigurd, Earl of Orkney Malcolm succeeded his cousin Malcolm as King of Strathclyde in 990/991. Kenneth III was killed in battle against Malcolm on March 25, 1005 and Malcolm ascending the throne becoming Malcolm II, King of Alba / King of Scots. Malcolm raided into Northumbria circa 1016 and was defeated by Uhtred the Bold at Durham, however, the same year he defeated a force of English and Vikings at Carham, to became King of Lothian. With the acquisition of the Kingdom of Lothian, Malcolm became the first effective ruler of the whole of Scotland. Scottish rule was extended into Lothian and Northumbrian lands down to Berwick. King Cnut King of England secured the southern part of Northumbria for England in 1032, settling the border between Scotland and northern England. Having no sons, it is believed that Malcolm tried to insure that his grandson Duncan I, son of Bethoc, would inherit the throne by eliminating other possible successors. This includes having the grandson of Kenneth III murdered. Malcolm II died on 25 November, 1034 at Glamis Castle, Angus, mortally wounded by his kinsmen in battle. He was buried on the Isle of Iona. Malcolm II was the last sovereign of the House of MacAlpine. He was succeeded by his grandson Duncan as he had intended. Duncan II was in turn killed and succeeded by MacBeth, believed to also be the grandson of Malcolm II through his middle daughter Donalda. ---------------------------------------- http://www.robertson.org/OOTC_Battle_of_Duncrub.html BATTLE OF DUNCRUB - 965 by James E. Fargo, FSA Scot Everyone is familiar with William Shakespeare’s play "Macbeth" in which the two protagonists fight for the Scottish throne. Not so clearly known is that this rivalry began several generations before the events described in the play. Our King Duncan was not the kindly old man portrayed but lived up to what became his clan’s war cry "Fierce When Roused". Macbeth, from the royal house of Moray, had a better claim to the throne on King Malcolm II death, based on celtic tanistry whereas Malcolm had adopted the English feudal system of primogeniture for his own royal line. In 962 the kingship of Alba (Scotland) was contested between two rival branches of the MacAlpin dynasty after the death of King Malcolm I. The two princes ruled jointly until a falling out between them led to a battle upon a ridge called Duncrub (Dorsum Crup) about seven miles west of Perth in Atholl in 965. King Dub (or Duff) of Cumbria, a prince of the royal house of Alpin, was the son of King Malcolm I. Duff led an army against Prince Cuilen and his army of Moray men. It was the custom then to appoint the heir to the Scots throne, to the sub-kingship of Cumbria as the province had been given by King Edgar of England in return for homage for that province and to defend it from invading Danes. Although Duff’s army was victorious at Duncrub, Duncan, hereditary lay abbot of Duncalden (Dunkeld) and Dubdon the mormaer of Atholl were killed. At this time in Scotland’s history it was common for senior churchmen to lead the armed forces of their church estates into combat. This abbot Duncan (b.920-d.965) was the father of Duncan of Atholl (b.949-d.990) who became the mormaer of Atholl upon Dubdon’s death in this battle. This Duncan of Atholl became the father of Crinan (born c.976 and killed in 1045) and two younger sons. The second son, Grim (thane of Strathearn and baille of Dull) was killed in 1010 at the battle of Mortlach. The youngest son became an ancestor of the Irvine clan according to Burke’s Peerage. On King Duff’s death in 967, Prince Cuilen of Moray assumed the kingship until he was killed in 971 during a battle in Lothian with the son of King Dyfnwal of Strathclyde, an ally of Duff’s brother Kenneth. This brother, as King Kenneth II assumed the throne and reigned from 971-995. Kenneth finally killed Cuilen’s brother Olaf in 977 ending the royal house of Moray’s competition for the throne for that generation. Kenneth II was succeeded by his nephew (son of King Dub/Duff) as Kenneth III (King of Scots from 997-1005). On the death of Kenneth III, King Malcolm II (son of Kenneth II) ruled as King of Scots from 1005 to his death in 1034. Malcolm II made his grandson Duncan the King of Cumbria until he became King of the Scots upon Malcolm’s death Pinkerton, John "An Enquiry Into the History of Scotland Preceding the Reign of Malcom III, or the Year 1056" Vol. I, 1789, pp 78-99. - LifeSketch: Ecgfrida, was the daughter of Aldun (Ealdhun), Bishop of Durham, born about 973 in Durham, England. In 995 her father moved his see from Chester-le-Street to the present day location of Durham Cathedral and Uchtred of Bamburgh assisted him in preparing the new site for the church. It is at this time that Ecgfida met and married Uchtred. They had one son Ealdred born about 997. In 1006 Uchtred repudiated Ecgfrida (divorced) and she returned to her father. Ecgfrida, married again to Kilvert Fitz Ligwulf and had a daughter named Sigrid. Ecgfrida was again repudiated, returned to her father and became a nun. Ecgfrida died in 1089, and was buried at Durham. Ecgfrida's son Ealdred succeeded his uncle Eadwulf Cudel as Earl of Bernicia in 1020/25 and died in 1038 in the bloodfeud started by the murder of his father Uchtred by Thurbrand. Ecgfrida's daughter Sigrid, married three times, one husband being Eadwulf, the son of her mother's 1st husband Uchtred and his 2nd wife, her half-brother Ealdred's half-brother. - Father: Nór THORRASSON, Legendary King In Alfheim
- Mother: Höddu SVADESDOTTIR
- Birth: 370, Ogdum,Raumsdahl,Norway
- LifeSketch: Raum and his sons In Heversu Noregr byggdist, Raum is one of the three sons of Nór, the legendary first king of Norway, and succeeds his father as a ruler and ancestor of rulers over southwestern Norway. Raum attended a Yule feast given by Bergfin (Bergfinn) son of Thrym (Þrymr) the Giant of Vermland and bedded Bergfin's sister Bergdís (Bergdísr). Bergdís subsequently bore three sons: Björn (Bjǫrn 'bear'), Brand (Brandr 'sword'), and Álf (Álfr 'elf'). Álf was fostered by Bergfin himself and so became known as Finnálf (Finnálfr). Björn was kept by his mother and his name was expanded to Jötunbjörn (Jǫtunbjǫrn 'Giant-bear'). Brand was sent to his father Raum who dedicated him to the gods (whatever that means exactly), and so he was afterwards known as Gudbrand (Guðbrandr 'God-sword'). Later Raum married Hild the daughter of Gudröd the Old (Guðrǫðr inn gamli) the son of King Sölvi (Sǫlvi) who first ruled the land now called Sóleyjar (the modern region of Solør comprising the municipalities of Grue, Åsnes, and Våler). However the Ynglinga saga says that Sölvi the Old who first cleared Sóleyar lived much later, making this Sölvi to be the father of a second Sölvi, the father of Halfdan Goldtooth (Hálfdanr Gulltanni), the father of Sólveig or Sölva who married Ólaf Woodcutter (Ólafr Trételgja). But Af Upplendinga Konungum claims that Olaf's wife Sölva was the sister of King Sölvi the Old. By his wife Hild, Raum became father of four legitimate sons: Gudröd, Hauk (Haukr) or Höd (Hǫðr), Hadding (Haddingr), and Hring (Hringr).

- ABBOT OF CROWLAND: Abbot Waltheof was deposed by Papal legate Alberic of Ostia at the Council of Westminster., BET 1126 AND 1138, Crowland Abbey, Crowland, Lincolnshire, England
- LifeSketch: Waltheof, also Waldeve or Walthof, was the second son of Gospatric, Earl of Northumbria and Lord of Dunbar Castle. He was born about 1068 in Northumbria, England. In 1072 Waltheof's family fled to Scotland where his father became Lord of Dunbar Castle. Through his father he was descended from both King Æthelred of England and King Malcolm II of Scotland. He is named variously in records: Waltheof MacGospatrick, Waltheof FitzGospatrick, Waldeve of Allerdale, Waltheof of Northumbria, Waltheof of Dunbar, Waltheof de Gospatric Waltheof MacGospatrick, a benefactor of the church of York. Married Sigrid of Allerdale From http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/SCOTTISH%20NOBILITY.htm#GospatrickDunbardied1075B Earl Gospatrick had two illegitimate children by an unknown mistress or mistresses: 6. WALTHEOF . Simeon of Durham names "Dolfin, Walther and Cospatric" as the sons of Gospatrick[1423]. He is named second of the three sons of Gospatrick given by Roger of Hoveden[1424]. A memorandum dated to [1275] records that "Earl Cospatryk formerly earl of Dunbar in Scotland had a brother Dolfin earl of Northumbarland…both…bastards", that they had "a legitimate brother Waldeve and a legitimate sister Etheldreda…of one father and one mother"[1425]. It seems unlikely that Waltheof was his father’s legitimate son as his father’s earldom was transmitted to his son Gospatrick. The Cronicon Cumbriæ records that “Ranulphus de Meschines” enfeoffed “Waldevum filium Cospatricii de Dunbar comitem in Scotia” with “tota baronia de Allerdale” and that “Willielmus de Meschines dominus de Coupland” enfeoffed “Waldevum filium Cospatricii” with “tota terra inter Cocar et Derwent”[1426]. "…Cospatric frater Dalfin, Waldef frater suus…" witnessed inquisitions by "David…Cumbrensis regionis princeps", dated 1124, concerning land owned by the church of Glasgow[1427]. Lord of Allerdale. Abbot of Crowland [1126] to Dec 1138, when he was deposed at the legatine council of Westminster[1428]. An undated agreement between Geoffrey abbot of St Albans and "Gospatric the earl" recites that the abbot granted Gospatric and "his son Adam (…formerly called Waldief)" the "land of Archil Morel…Beuuicke"[1429]. “Waldevus filius Cospatrici comitis” donated property to Gysburn Priory, with the consent of “uxore mea Sigrida et filiis meis Cospatrico et Alano”, by undated charter which names “El. filio Erlafi presbyteri cognate meo”[1430]. A charter of King Henry II records donations to York St Mary, including the donation of “villam de Stainburn” by “Walthef filius Gospatrici” and "villam de Saltergh et…de Whyrkingtona" by "Gospatricius filius eorundem"[1431]. m as her first husband, SIGRID, daughter of ---. “Waldevus filius Cospatrici comitis” donated property to Gysburn Priory, with the consent of “uxore mea Sigrida et filiis meis Cospatrico et Alano”, by undated charter[1432]. Sigrid married secondly Roger FitzGilbert. Her second marriage is confirmed by the undated charter under which [her son] "Alanus filius Walthef et Sigrid mater et Rogerus vir eius" donated land "in Aspatrick" to St Bees by undated charter[1433]. "Rogerus filius Gilberti" donated "terram de Walton" to St Bees, with the consent of "uxoris mee Sigeride", by undated charter, witnessed by "Roberto fratre meo…Roberto filio meo…"[1434]. Waltheof & his wife had three children: Alan. Married Emma. Ethelreda. Married firstly RANULF de Lindsay, son of --- (-before 1158). m secondly (before 1158) WILLIAM de Eseby, son of ---. Gunnhild. Married UHTRED, son of FERGUS Lord of Galloway & his wife --- (-1174). From http://www.lancaster.ac.uk/fass/projects/manorialrecords/cumbria/cumberlandlist.htm Allerdale, barony of The barony of Allerdale below Derwent was originally granted to Waldeve son of Gospatric, earl of Dunbar, who, according to tradition, granted immediate lordship of many manors within the barony to family members and supporters. Waldeve was also granted the honour of Cockermouth, and the barony of Allerdale was closely linked to the honour of Cockermouth from the twelfth century. Waltheof fitz Gospatrick, Earl of Dunbar, was born before 1084. He married Sigrid before 1104. Waltheof became Lord of Allerdale and the 3rd Earl of Dunbar before 1138, the year he died. See "My Lines" ( http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cousin/html/p365.htm#i7939 ) from Compiler: R. B. Stewart, Evans, GA ( http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cousin/html/index.htm ) From Waltheof of Allerdale Waltheof of Allerdale was an 11th- and 12th-century Anglo-Saxon noble, lord of Allerdale in modern Cumbria. Brother of Dolfin of Carlisle and Gospatric of Dunbar, Waltheof son of Gospatric, Earl of Northumbria.[1] Both Waltheof and his brother Gospatric witness Earl David's Glasgow Inquest 1113 x 1124, and Waltheof also attests some of David's charters as king of the Scots later.[1] The account of Waltheof and his family in Cumbrian monastic cartularies (St Bees and Wetheral), says that he gave land in Allerdale to his three sisters, Octreda, Gunhilda and Maud.[1] Waltheof had two sons and several daughters.[2] Alan (fl. 1139), succeeded to Allerdale.[3] The other son was named Gopspatric.[4] An Octreda, either his sister or daughter, appears to have married Donnchad mac Maíl Coluim and become mother of William fitz Duncan, mormaer of Moray.[5] William fitz Duncan appears to have inherited Waltheof's Allerdale territory from his mother.[6] A definite daughter, Ethelreda, married Ranulf de Lindsay and then William de Esseville.[7] Another, Gunnilda, married Uhtred of Galloway.[3] Waltheof's partner appears to have been a woman named Sigrid or Sigarith.[3] He seems to have become abbot of Crowland late in his life, but this Waltheof may be someone else.[8] The abbot of Crowland in question was a monk of Crowland Abbey before becoming abbot in 1125.[9] Abbot Waltheof was deposed by Papal legate Alberic of Ostia at the Council of Westminster.[10] Waltheof (Waldeve) de Dunbar Surname: Dunbar Given Name: Waltheof (Waldeve) de Sex: M _UID: FB682B4A10BB8541B7C4C1122C6292BE95D4 Change Date: 13 Jun 2008 at 01:00:00 Father: Gospatrick I earl of Dunbar b: 1040 in Northumberland, England Mother: Aethelreda of England b: 1042 in Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland Marriage 1 Sigrid Sigarith b: ABT 1040 Children Has Children Patrick I de Dunbar earl of Dunbar and lord of Beanley Has Children Gunnild de Dunbar b: ABT 1060 Has No Children Gospatrick de Dunbar Has No Children Alan de Dunbar Source: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=white_of_ga_orig&id=I16952 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Roger fitz Gilbert appears to have married Sigrid, the widow of Waldeve or Waltheof of Allerdale in Cumberland. http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/De%20Lancasters%20of%20Westmorland.html From The Registry of the Priory of St. Bees, The date will lie between 1195 and 1209. 454. 1 For the grantor, see notes on Nos. 22, 49 and 308, By the latter deed it will be seen that Alan had lands in Gosford which will account for his address to his men of Coupland as well as of Allerdale. 2 This phrase might give rise to an interesting discussion on the earliest capital messuage of the barony of Allerdale. J. Denton was of opinion that " Waldeof first baron of Allerdale seated himself first at Papcastle, where he had a mansion house but afterwards he moved to Cockermouth" (Accompt, p. 41). In support of this it may be added that Papcastle was regarded from a remote date as the chief manor of the barony. For example in 1286, after the death of Walter de Wigton, it was reported that he had held his fees in Allerdale of the countess of Albemarle by suit at the court of Papcastle (Inq. p. m. 14 Edw. I. No. 15). For several centuries afterwards the manor occupied the same feudal relation to Allerdale. Legends, however, have grown thick around this Roman site, like most of such sites in Cumberland. See Camden, Britannia (ed. Holland), p. 768. In any case, from the evidence of this deed, it seems clear that Alan was living at Cockermouth, from which Papcastle, on the other side of the Derwent, is only a couple of miles distant. According to No. 498 William Meschin, lord of Coupland, enfeoffed Waldeve father of Alan, of the Quinque Ville between the^Cocker and Derwent, now the Honor of cokermouth. Waltheof, 1st Baron of Allerdale was the son of Gospatric, Earl of Northumberland and unknown wife (?).1,2 He married Sigrid (?).2 He died circa 1138.1 He gained the title of Baron of Allerdale [feudal].1 He was the Abbot between 1125 and 1138 at Crowland.1 Citations [S11] Alison Weir, Britain's Royal Families: The Complete Genealogy (London, U.K.: The Bodley Head, 1999), page 178.
