- Father: Athal Noble One OF THE GREUTHINGI OSTROGOTHS
- Mother: Erelicia of The Ostrogoths
- Birth: 270, Scythia, Roman Empire
- Clan Name: House of Amal
- Tribe Name: Greuthingi
- LifeSketch: From Wikipedia Achiulf was a king of the early Ostrogothic Kingdom. He was the successor to Athal. During his reign, the surrounding nations of the Sarmatians, Scythians, and Gepids were subjugated by the Ostrogoths. Achiulf was succeeded in around 350 by Ermanerik (Airmanareiks). ************************* Foundation for Medieval Genealogy DYNASTY of the AMAL GOTHS Iordanes sets out the supposed ancestors of Athal, in order, as follows "Gapt…Hulmul…Augis…Amal a quo et origo Amalorum decurrit…Hisarnis…Ostrogotha…Hunuil…Athal"[31]. Nothing is known about the Amal Goth leaders, supposed descendants of Athal, who are shown below apart from the sparse amount of information which has been extracted from Iordanes. ATHAL . Athal had two children: 1. ACHIULF . Iordanes names "Achiulf et Oduulf" as the sons of Athal[32]. Achiulf had four children: a) ANSILA . Iordanes names "Ansila et Ediulf, Vultuulf et Hermenerig" as the sons of Achiulf[33]. b) EDIULF . Iordanes names "Ansila et Ediulf, Vultuulf et Hermenerig" as the sons of Achiulf[34]. c) VULTWULF . Iordanes names "Ansila et Ediulf, Vultuulf et Hermenerig" as the sons of Achiulf[35]. Vultwulf had one child: i) VALARAVANS . Iordanes names "Valaravans" as the son of Vultwulf[36]. Valaravans had one child: (a) VINITHARIUS . Iordanes names "Vinitharius" as the son of Valaravans[37]. Vinitharius had one child: (1) VANDALARIUS . Iordanes names "Vandiliarum" as son of Vinitharius[38]. - see below. d) HERMENRICH . Iordanes names "Ansila et Ediulf, Vultuulf et Hermenerig" as the sons of Achiulf[39]. Hermenrich had one child: i) HUNIMUND . Iordanes names "Hunimundum" as son of "Hermanaricus"[40]. Hunimund had one child: (a) THORISMUND (-killed in battle [451/55]). Iordanes names "Thorismundo" as son of "Hunimundus"[41]. Iordanes records that "Thorismundo filius eius" succeeded as King of the Goths after the death of "Hunimundus filius quondam regis…Hermanarici" but was killed fighting the Gepids in the second year of his reign[42]. Thorismund had one child: (1) BERIMUD . Iordanes names "Berimud" as son of "Thorismundo"[43]. Iordanes records that "Beremud…cum filio Vitiricho" left the Ostrogoths to join "Vallia rex Gothorum" [King of the Visigoths in Toulouse][44]. The implication of a later passage in Iordanes, which records that "Valamer…ex consobrino eius genitus Vandalario" succeeded as king after "Thorismundo" was killed[45], is that Berimud's departure was triggered after he was passed over in the succession. Berimud had one child: a. VETERICUS . Iordanes names "Vetericum" as son of "Berimud"[46]. Vetericus had one child: (i) EUTHARICH (-[522/23]). Iordanes names "Eutharicum" as son of "Vetericus" and as husband of "Amalasuentham" and father of their two children[47]. Eutharic was adopted by Emperor Justin in recognition of his father-in-law's decision to designate him his successor after his marriage. He was given Roman citizenship and became first consul in 519 as FLAVIUS EUTHARICUS CILLIGA[48]. Wolfram estimates that Eutharich died in [522/23][49]. Jordanes specifies that Eutharich predeceased King Theodoric's nomination of his son Athalaric as his successor. m (515) AMALASUINTHA, daughter of THEODORIC King of the Ostrogoths in Italy & his wife Audofledis of the Franks ([493]-murdered [30 Apr] 535). The Chronicle of Cassiodorus records the marriage in 515 of "Theodericus filiam usam dominam Amalasuintam" and "gloriosi viri dn Eutharici"[50]. 2. ODWULF . Iordanes names "Achiulf et Oduulf" as the sons of Athal[51].

- Father: Karolus MAGNUS Rex Francorum Imperator Romanorum
- Mother: Gerswinde von Sachsen
- Birth: ABT 808, Aachen, Frankenreich
- Also known as: Adoltrude
- Also known as: Adeltrude
- Also known as: Adaltrude of the Franks
- Also known as: Adelinde
- LifeSketch: Adaltrude was the Daughter of Charlemagne (Charles I) and his concubine Gersuinda. She was born about 774 at the Palace in Aachen and was raised there with her many half-siblings. Charlemagne was protective of his daughter and reluctant for them to marry and/or leave his court. Many of his daughters are known to have gone into the church. Adaltrude's fate, however, is not known. While growing up at the palace, it is probable that she received a formal education. According to Einhard, Charlemagne's sons and daughters were educated in the liberal arts, the women were expected to learn to spin and weave and 'acquire every womanly accomplishment, rather than fritter away their time in sheer idleness'. Very few of Charlemagne's daughters married, he did not allow it, and those that did mare are well documented, therefore Adaltrude did not marry. Nothing is known of her death. ------------- “Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013): “CHARLEMAGNE, King of the Franks, 768-814, King of the Langobards, 773-814, Emperor of the Romans, 800-814, son of Pépin (nicknamed "le Bref”), King of the Franks, by Bertrade, daughter of Charibert, Count of Laon. On the death of his father in 768, he became King of the Franks jointly with his brother, Carloman, and was crowned 9 October 768 at Noyon. He married (1st c.769-770, daughter of Desiderius, king of the Lombards. They had no issue. He married (2nd) before 30 April 771 HILDEGARDE, daughter of Gerold I, Count in Vinzgau, by Imma (or Emma), daughter of Count Nebi (or Hnabi). They had four sons, Charles, Pépin [King of Italy], Louis (I) [King of Aquitaine, Emperor], and Lothair, and five daughters, Adelaide (or Adelheid), Rotrude, Berthe, Gisele, and Hildegarde. On the death of his brother, Carloman, in 771, he reunited his father's possessions. He conquered the kingdom of the Lombards in 773. He used the title "rex Francorum et Langobardorum" from 5 June 774, adding "atque patricius Romanorum" from 16 July 774. His wife, Hildegarde, died at Thionville (Moselle) 30 April 783, and was buried in the church of the abbey of Saint Arnoul at Metz. He married (3rd) at Worms in October 783 FASTRADA, daughter of Radulf, Count in Franconia. They had two daughters, Theodrade [Abbess of Argenteuil] and Hiltrude. His wife, Fastrada, died at Frankfurt 10 August 794, and was buried in the basilica of Saint-Alban in Mainz. He married (4th) c.794-796 LIUTGARDE, an Alamannian. They had no issue. By various mistresses, he had four illegitimate sons, Pépin, Dreux [Bishop of Metz], Hugues, and Thierry (or Theodoric), and three illegitimate daughters, Chrothais, Rothlldis (or Rouhaut) [Abbess at Faremoutiers], and Adaltrude. His wife, Liutgarde, died at Tours 4 June 800, and was buried in the church of Saint-Martin in Tours. He was crowned Emperor of the Romans at St. Peter's, Rome 25 December 800. CHARLEMAGNE, Emperor of the Romans, died at Aachen 28 January 814, and was buried at Aix-la-Chapelle. Adalhaid was born in 774 during the siege of Pavia, capital of the Kingdom of the Lombards (September 773/June 774). Unfortunately she did not survive the return trip to France, but died before reaching Lyons. Her epitaph composed by the poet Paul the Deacon: " Here in this mound lies a tiny girl...... Born beneath the soaring walls of Pavia While her father was subduing the realms of Italy, She was snatched from the threshold of life As she approached the Rhone...... She left before she could witness her father's triumphs, But now she lives in blessed realms with her eternal Father."

- NEVER QUEEN: Ælfgifu of York was the first wife of King Æthelred the Unready but was never anointed Queen and never signed charters.
- Daughter of Ealdorman Thored Gunnersson of Northumbria and his wife Hilda.: (Date and Place unknown)
- LifeSketch: **NOT THE SAME AS EMMA OF NORMANDY Æthelred'S 2ND WIFE WHO ALSO TOOK THIS NAME, NOT THE SAME AS ÆLFGIFU OF NORTHAMPTON** Ælfgifu of York (fl. c. 970 – 1002) was the first wife of Æthelred the Unready (r. 968–1016), by whom she bore many offspring, including Edmund Ironside. It is most probable that she was a daughter of Thored, Earl of southern Northumbria. Her name and paternity do not surface in the sources until sometime after the Conquest. The first to offer any information at all, Sulcard of Westminster (fl. 1080s), merely describes her as being “of very noble English stock” (ex nobilioribus Anglis), without naming her, while in the early 12th century, William of Malmesbury has nothing to report. All primary evidence comes from two Anglo-Norman historians. John of Worcester, also writing in the early 12th century, states that Æthelred's first wife was Ælfgifu, daughter of the nobleman Æthelberht (comes Agelberhtus) and the mother of Edmund, Æthelstan, Eadwig and Eadgyth. Writing in the 1150s, Ailred of Rievaulx identifies her as a daughter of earl (comes) Thored and the mother of Edmund, though he supplies no name. Ailred had been seneschal at the court of King David I of Scotland (r. 1124–53), whose mother Margaret descended from King Æthelred and his first wife. Although his testimony is late, his proximity to the royal family may have given him access to genuine information. These two accounts are irreconcilable at the point of ascribing two different fathers to Æthelred's first wife (in both cases, Edmund's mother). One way out of it would be to assume the existence of two different wives before the arrival of Queen Emma, Æthelred's Norman wife, although this interpretation presents difficulties of its own, especially as the sources envisage a single woman.Historians generally favour the view that John of Worcester was in error about the father's name, as Æthelberht's very existence is under suspicion: if Latin comes is to be interpreted as a gloss on the office of ealdorman, only two doubtful references to one or two duces (ealdormen) of this name can be put forward that would fit the description. All in all, the combined evidence suggests that Æthelred's first wife was Ælfgifu, the daughter of Earl Thored. This magnate is likely to have been the Thored who was a son of Gunnar and earl of (southern) Northumbria. Marriage and children Based largely on the careers of her sons, Ælfgifu's marriage has been dated approximately to the (mid-)980s. Considering Thored's authority as earl of York and apparently, the tenure of that office without royal appointment, the union would have signified an important step for the West-Saxon royal family by which it secured a foothold in the north. Such a politically weighty union would help explain the close connections maintained by Ælfgifu's eldest sons Edmund and Æthelstan with noble families based in the northern Danelaw. The marriage produced six sons, all of whom were named after Æthelred's predecessors, and an unknown number of daughters. The eldest sons Æthelstan, Ecgberht, Eadred and Edmund first attest charters in 993, while the younger sons Eadwig and Edgar first make an appearance in them in 997 and 1001 respectively. Some of these sons seem to have spent part of their childhood in fosterage elsewhere, possibly with Æthelred's mother Ælfthryth. Out of Ælfgifu's six sons, only Edmund Ironside outlived his father and became king. In 1016 he suffered several defeats against Cnut and in October they agreed to share the kingdom, but Edmund died within six weeks and Cnut became king of all England. Æthelred gave three of his daughters in marriage to ealdormen, presumably in order to secure the loyalties of his nobles and so to consolidate a defence system against Viking attacks. Sons: - Æthelstan (born before 993, d. 1014) - Ecgberht (born before 993, d. 1005) - Edmund (II) Ironside (born before 993, d. 1016) - Eadred (d. 1012 x 1015) - Eadwig (born before 997, exiled and killed 1017) - Edgar (born before 1001, d. 1012 x 1015) Daughters: - Eadgyth (born before 993), married Eadric Streona, ealdorman of Mercia. - Ælfgifu, married ealdorman Uhtred of Northumbria. - Wulfhild, who married Ulfcytel (Snillingr) (d. 1016), apparently ealdorman of East Anglia. - An unnamed daughter, who became abbess of Wherwell Unlike her mother-in-law, Ælfthryth, Ælfgifu was not anointed queen and never signed charters. She did, however, make at least some impression on the contemporary record. In a will issued between 975/980 and 987, the thegn Beorhtric and his wife bequeathed to their “lady” (hlæfdige) an armlet worth 30 gold mancuses and a stallion, calling upon her authority to oversee the implementation of the arrangements set out by will. In a will of later date (AD 990 x 1001), in which she is addressed as “my lady” (mire hlæfdian), the noblewoman Æthelgifu promised a bequest of 30 mancuses of gold. Just as little is known of Ælfgifu's life, so the precise date and circumstances of her death cannot be recovered. In any event, she appears to have died by 1002, possibly in childbirth, when Æthelred took to wife Emma, daughter of Count Richard of Rouen, who received or adopted her predecessor's Anglo-Saxon name, Ælfgifu. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki

- Birth: 834, Wantage, Berkshire, Wessex, England
- Also known as: Æthelbald
- Also known as: Ethelbald
- APPOINTED KING OF WESSEX: In 855 Æthelwulf went on pilgrimage to Rome and appointed Æthelbald King of Wessex.
- REFUSED TO RETURN KINGSHIP TO ÆTHELWULF: Upon Æthelwulf's returned to England in 856, Æthelbald refused to give up the crown. The Kingdom of Wessex was divided, with Æthelbald ruling the west and his father the east., 856, Wessex
- FATHER DIED: Upon his father's death Æthelbald became unopposed ruler of all of Wessex, and ruled until his own death in 860
- MARRIED HIS STEP MOTHER, JUDITH OF FRANCE: Immediately upon the death of his father and succeeding him as king, Æthelbald married his step-mother, 14 year old Judith of France. This was probably done to strengthen his position as king because Judith was the daughter of the West Frankish king.
- Reign: BET 858 AND 860, Wessex, England
- Title Of Nobility: King of England, Roi des Wessex, King of Wessex, König der West Sachsen
- LifeSketch: Æthelbald was the second son of King Æthelwulf of Wessex and his first wife Osberga, born about 834 in Wessex. His oldest brother Æthelstan is believed to have died shortly after defeating the Vikings in 850. Æthelwulf and Æthelbald defeated them again at the Battle of Aclea in 851. In 855 Æthelwulf appointed Æthelbald acting King of Wessex and his next younger brother Æthelberht acting King of Kent, while he went on pilgrimage to Rome. Æthelwulf returned from Rome in late 856 with a 12 year old bride, Judith of France. Not only was Judith younger than Æthelbald but she had been anointed Queen, where as Osberga, Æthelbald's mother had not. In rebellion against his father Æthelbald refused to return control of Wessex to Æthelwulf. In the end they split Wessex. After Æthelwulf's death in 858, Æthelbald immediately married his father's young widow. Æthelbald became full King of all of Wessex and Æthelberht full King of Kent. Æthelbald reigned on his own, with Judith by his side, for about 2 1/2 years and died in July of 860. Æthelberht who was already King of Kent succeeded his brother to become King of Wessex as well and united the two into one kingdom. Judith and Æthelbald had no children and Judith returned to France to eventually marry Baldwin, Margrave of Flanders.

- LifeSketch: Æthelstan Ætheling (Old English: Æþelstan Æþeling), early or mid 980s to 25 June 1014, was the eldest son of King Æthelred the Unready by his first wife Ælfgifu and the heir apparent to the kingdom until his death. He made his first appearance as a witness to a charter of his father in 993. He probably spent part of his childhood at Æthelingadene, Dean in west Sussex, and his paternal grandmother Ælfthryth may have played an important part in his upbringing. Almost nothing is known of his life, although he seems to have formed a friendship with Sigeforth and Morcar, two of the leading thegns of the Five Boroughs of the East Midlands. In 1013 King Æthelred was forced into temporary exile in Normandy, and while it is not known what became of Æthelstan and his surviving full brothers, Edmund Ironside and Eadwig, during the reign of King Sweyn, they probably remained somewhere in England. Æthelstan's last appearance is in a charter dated 1013. Æthelstan was a "warrior prince" and by his death he had accumulated a large collection of swords, prized war horses and combat equipment. In his will, copies of which still survive, and which was made on the day of his death, he left Edmund Ironside his most prized possession, a sword which had once belonged to Offa of Mercia, together with some of his estates and other pieces of his war gear. To his other full brother, Eadwig, he gave another piece from his large weapon collection, a silver-hilted sword. Much of his remaining land and wealth was divided between churches, friends and servants. He also made bequests to his sword-sharpener and stag huntsman. While he mentions his father, grandmother and foster-mother in his will, his own mother and her soul are completely omitted. He also makes no mention of his stepmother or half-brothers, suggesting a division within the royal family at the time. He was buried at the Old Minster, Winchester, the first burial there of someone who was not king since Edward the Elder's brother, Æthelweard, in 922.

- Birth: ABT 897, East Anglia, Norfolk, England
- Also known as: Æthelwold
- LifeSketch: Æthelwald (died 962) was ealdorman of East Anglia. He is mentioned in Byrhtferth's life of Oswald of Worcester along with other members of his family. He was probably the oldest son of Æthelstan Half-King and succeeded to some of his father's offices in 956 when Æthelstan became a monk at Glastonbury Abbey. He was a benefactor of Ramsey Abbey and a supporter of the Benedictine reform movement which began in the reign of King Edgar. He was the first husband of Ælfthryth who married King Edgar after Æthelwald's death. William of Malmesbury's Gesta regum anglorum has a late account of Æthelwald's marriage and death. According to William, the beauty of Ordgar's daughter Ælfthryth was reported to King Edgar. Edgar, looking for a Queen, sent Æthelwald to see Ælfthryth, ordering him "to offer her marriage [to Edgar] if her beauty were really equal to report." When she turned out to be just as beautiful as was said, Æthelwald married her himself and reported back to Edgar that she was quite unsuitable. Edgar was eventually told of this deception, and decided to repay Æthelwald's betrayal in like manner. He said that he would visit the poor woman, which alarmed Æthelwald. He asked Ælfthryth to make herself as unattractive as possible for the king's visit, but she did the opposite. Edgar, quite besotted with her, killed Æthelwald during a hunt. Edward Augustus Freeman debunks the Æthelwald murder story as a "tissue of romance" in his Historic essays,[1] but his arguments were in turn refuted by the naturalist William Henry Hudson in his 1920 book Dead Man's Plack and an Old Thorn.[2] Æthelwald was seemingly dead by 962 as he ceases to witness charters at that time. He was buried at Ramsey Abbey. His younger brother Æthelwine succeeded to his offices. A memorial to Æthelwald, known as the Dead Man's Plack, was erected in Longparish, Hampshire in 1825. - LifeSketch: Æthelwulf was the son of King Ecgberht of Wessex. Ecgberht was from Wessex but was in exile in Francia until 802 when he returned and took control of the throne of Wessex. Æthelwulf was likely born in Wessex sometime after Ecgberht's return, between 802 and 810, but Æthelwulf was first recorded in 825, when Egbert sent Æthelwulf with Eahlstan, Bishop of Sherborne, and Wulfheard, Ealdorman of Hampshire, and a large army into Kent to expel sub-king Baldred. The name of Æthelwulf's mother is not known, and he had no recorded siblings. He is known to have had two wives in succession, and so far as is known, Osburh, the senior of the two, was the mother of all his children. She was the daughter of Oslac, described by Asser, biographer of their son Alfred the Great, as "King Æthelwulf's famous butler", a man who was descended from Jutes who had ruled the Isle of Wight. Æthelwulf and Osburh had six known children: - Æthelstan (c 820-c850) - Æthelbald (c835 -860) married Judith of France after his father's death - Æthelswith (c 838 - 888) Married King Burgred of Mercia, became Queen of Mercia - Æthelberht (c839 - 865) - Æthelred (c 845 - 871) - Alfred (848/849 – 26 October 899) His eldest son, Æthelstan, was old enough to be appointed King of Kent in 839, so he must have been born by the early 820s, and he died in the early 850s.The second son, Æthelbald, is first recorded as a charter witness in 841, and if, like Alfred, he began to attest when he was around six, he would have been born around 835; he was King of Wessex from 858 to 860. Æthelwulf's third son, Æthelberht, was probably born around 839 and was king from 860 to 865. The only daughter, Æthelswith, married Burgred, King of Mercia, in 853. The other two sons were much younger: Æthelred was born around 848 and was king from 865 to 871, and Alfred was born around 849 and was king from 871 to 899. Osburh probably died by 855, although it is possible that she was repudiated. In 856 Æthelwulf married Judith, daughter of Charles the Bald, King of West Francia and future Holy Roman Emperor, and his wife Ermentrude. There were no children from Æthelwulf's marriage to Judith, and after his death she married his eldest surviving son and successor, Æthelbald.

Gregory of Tours names Albofled as sister of King Clovis, specifying that she was baptised but died soon after, St Rémy sending a letter of condolence to her brother[31]. From the context, it would appear that her baptism took place around the same time as her brother was baptised. “Remigius Episcopus” wrote to “Chlodoveo Regi” consoling him on the death of “germana vestra…Albochledis”[32].

- Also known as: Algitha FitzUcthred
- LifeSketch: Ealdgyth of Northumbria was the daughter of Uchted the Bold, Earl of Northumbria & his 3rd wife Ælfgifu, daughter of King Æthelred the Unready. She was born about 1015 in Northumbria, England. Her parents married about 1014 and her father was killed in 1016, therefore she was born sometime in that period, and was the couples only child. She did have older half-brothers born from her fathers prior marriages. Ealdgyth married Maldred, Lord of Allerdale about 1036 and they had 3 children: - Maldred - a daughter, name unknown ( Ældgytha ? ) - Gospatric, Earl of Northumberland, born about 1040 Ealdgyth's date and place of death are unknown. She is presumed to have died at Dunbar Castle, in Scotland. Her son Gospatric held lands in Northumberland. Bamburgh, Northumberland and Dunbar, Scotland are only about 50 miles apart, therefore, living at either local is believable.
