- LifeSketch: Wikipedia-Elemund, father of Austrigusa Elemund (Latin: Elemundus, died 548) was king of the Gepids, an east Germanic people, during the first half of the 6th century. He may have been the son of Gunderit, himself son of Ardaric ascended by overthrowing a rival Ardariking branch. Based on archaeological evidence, István Boná believes that in the 520s or 530s Elemund must have consolidated his power in Transylvania by submitting or removing minor Gepid rulers.[1] Elemund had a son and daughter, Ustrigotho and Austrigusa, respectively; the latter was given in marriage to Wacho, the king of the Lombards, in 512. The reasons behind the marriage were multiple: on one side it protected the two kings from the threat represented by the Ostrogothic Kingdom, while on the other it reduced the danger represented to the Lombard king by Ildechis, a pretender to the Lombard throne. Wacho was eventually to remarry after Austrigusa's death, but this did not compromise the good relations existing between Lombards and Gepids.[2][3] Elemund died of illness in 548 and was succeeded by Thurisind, while the legitimate heir was forced into exile.[4][5] Ustrigotho found hospitality among the Lombards, but was killed in 552 by his host, King Audoin, as part of a plan to ease relations between Gepids and Lombards.[6] ************************** Foundation for Medieval Genealogy OSTROGOTHA [Austreusa/Austrigosa] . - LifeSketch: The Kingdom of the Lombards (Latin: Regnum Langobardorum; Italian: Regno dei Longobardi; Lombard: Regn dei Lombards) also known as the Lombard Kingdom; later the Kingdom of (all) Italy (Latin: Regnum totius Italiae), was an early medieval state established by the Lombards, a Germanic people, on the Italian Peninsula in the latter part of the 6th century. ***************** Wikipedia - Authari (c. 540 – 5 September 590) was king of the Lombards from 584 to his death. He was considered as the first Lombard king to have adopted some level of "Roman-ness" and introduced policies that led to drastic changes particularly in the treatment of the Romans and Christianity.[1] Rule Authari was the son of Cleph, King of the Lombards. When the latter died in 574, the Lombard nobility refused to appoint a successor, resulting in a ten-years-long interregnum known as the Rule of the Dukes. In 574 and 575 the Lombards invaded Provence, then part of the kingdom of Burgundy of the Merovingian Guntram. The latter, in alliance with his nephew, the king of Austrasia Childebert II, replied by invading Northern Italy. The Austrasian army descended the valley of the Adige and took Trent. The Byzantine emperor, Tiberius II, began to negotiate an alliance with the Franks, and so the Lombards, fearful of a pincer movement, elected another king. In 584, they elected Duke Authari and ceded him the capital of Pavia as well as half of their ducal domains as a demesne. He spent his entire reign in wars with the Franks, the Byzantines, and Lombard rebels. His first major test was the quashing of the rebel duke Droctulf of Brescello, who had allied with the Romans and was ruling the Po valley. Having expelled him, he spent most of the rest of his six years on the throne fighting the exarch of Ravenna, Smaragdus, or the Merovingian kings. Guntram and Childebert were still not satisfied with their successes in Italy and they many times threatened invasion, following through on their threats twice. The memory of Theudebert I of Austrasia's campaigns in Italy, the urging of Childebert's warlike mother Brunhilda and the Byzantine emperor and exarch, as well as the wrongs done Guntram in the past undoubtedly fueled their quarrelsomeness. In 588, Authari defeated them handily, but in 590, the uncle and nephew led two armies across the Alps, respectively over Mont Cenis and the Brenner to Milan and Verona. Though Authari shut himself up in Pavia, the Franks accomplished little as the exarch's army did not meet them and they could not even join up with each other. Pestilence and the Breach at Cucca flood turned them around and they left the Lombards much chastened, but hardly defeated. Authari, when not controlled by foreign armies, expanded the Lombard dominion at the expense of Byzantium. He took the fortress of Comacchio and cut off communication between Padua and Ravenna. Faroald, duke of Spoleto, captured the Ravennan seaport of Classis and utterly devastated it. Authari swept through the peninsula all the way to Reggio, vowing to take Calabria — a vow never to be kept by any Lombard. Authari married Theodelinda, daughter of the Bavarian duke Garibald I, on 15 May 589 at Verona. A Catholic, she had great influence among the Lombards for her virtue. A detailed account of the courtship by the eighth-century historian Paul the Deacon revealed that the marriage was also a political alliance designed to provide additional sanction to Authari's royal position.[2] In addition, Theodelinda was also chosen due to the long-standing ties between the Lombards and the Bavarians as well as their mutual hostility toward the Franks.[3] She also claimed descent from the ancient Lombard royal line.[3] When Authari died in Pavia in 590, possibly by poison, he was succeeded as king by Agilulf, duke of Turin, on the advice, sought by the dukes, of Theodelinda, who married the new king.[4]

- Birth: ABT 345, Central Asia, Mongolian Steppes, Asia
- Also known as: Bulümar of the Huns
- Also known as: Balamber, Balamir, Balamur
- Title Of Nobility: 62nd King of The Huns
- LifeSketch: Balamber (also known as Balamir, Balamur and many other variants) was ostensibly a chieftain of the Huns, mentioned by Jordanes in his Getica (c. 550 AD). Jordanes simply called him "king of the Huns" (Latin: rex Hunnorum) and writes the story of Balamber crushing the tribes of the Ostrogoths in the 370s; somewhere between 370 and more probably 376 AD. A number of historians argue that Balamber may have never existed, and was a confusion of other rulers or even a fabrication. Jordanes recounts: "Balamber, king of the Huns, took advantage of his ill health to move an army into the country of the Ostrogoths, from whom the Visigoths had already separated because of some dispute. Meanwhile Hermanaric, who was unable to endure either the pain of his wound or the inroads of the Huns, died full of days at the great age of one hundred and ten years. The fact of his death enabled the Huns to prevail over those Goths who, as we have said, dwelt in the East and were called Ostrogoths." "When he had ruled with such license for barely a year, Balamber, king of the Huns, would no longer endure it, but sent for Gesimund, son of Hunimund the Great. Now Gesimund, together with a great part of the Goths, remained under the rule of the Huns, being mindful of his oath of fidelity. Balamber renewed his alliance with him and led his army up against Vinitharius. After a long contest, Vinitharius prevailed in the first and in the second conflict, nor can any say how great a slaughter he made of the army of the Huns. But in the third battle, when they met each other unexpectedly at the river named Erac, Balamber shot an arrow and wounded Vinitharius in the head, so that he died. Then Balamber took to himself in marriage Vadamerca, the grand-daughter of Vinitharius, and finally ruled all the people of the Goths as his peaceful subjects, but in such a way that one ruler of their own number always held the power over the Gothic race, though subject to the Huns." Those events were preceded by the Huns' attack on the Alans at the Don River, who bordered the Greuthungi, and according to Ammianus Marcellinus, occurred an alliance between them. The events and names which followed vary according to Ammianus and Cassiodorus (from whose Gothic History was summarized Getica): Ammianus wrote that after death of Ermanaric in 375, Vithimiris became the king of the Greuthungi, he resisted the Huns and Alans, but was killed in battle and was succeeded by young son Videric, so they were ruled by duces Alatheus and Safrax. They managed to make a confederation of Greuthungi, Alans and Huns, who escaped from the majority of Huns, crossed the Danube in 376, and fought Battle of Adrianople in 378. Cassiodorus, i.e. Jordanes recounts that after Ermanaric's death Goths separated in Western Visigoths and Eastern Ostrogoths, the latter remained in "their old Scythian settlements" under Hunnic rule. The Amal Vinitharius retained the "insignia of his princely rank", and trying to escape from the Huns, he invaded the lands of the Antes and their king Boz for merely one year, but Balamber put an end to Ostrogoths independence. After the subjection, followed more complex Ostrogoths royal descending; Ermanaric > Hunimund-Thorismund-Berimud moved with his son Videric with the Visigoths to the West because (they) "despised the Ostrogoths for their subjection to the Huns". Then happened forty years of interregnum and Ostrogoths decided to give the rule to Vandalaris's son Valamir, a relative of Thorismund. Valamir eventually deserted Attila's sons in c. 454. Herwig Wolfram argued the possibility that unknown river Erac could be identified with the river Phasis in Lazica. Otto J. Maenchen-Helfen denied the connection with ancient Erax, and considered Tiligul or lower Dnieper. Wolfram puts the geographical location of events after the battle in 376, in Scythia, but the term shifted more westward and actually meant Dacia and Pannonia. Maenchen-Helfen considered that Cassiodorus would not admit that the Gothic princess Vadamerca became a wife of Balamber if he was not some sort of a king. Wolfram argued that although scholars often identify "Vithimiris" with Vinitharius, and "Videric" with Vandalarius, onomatological and genealogical methods do not go along with historical events, and many difficulties arise. One of them was that Balamber lived in the time of Valamir. However, although of similar etymological names, Balamber, Wolfram related to Iranian Balimber, and as such considered them two different personalities. A number of scholars such as Edward Arthur Thompson, Hyun-Jin Kim, and Peter Heather consider Balamber's story historically improbable, and he may be a version of the better-attested Valamir, or was an invention by the Goths to explain who defeated them.

- LifeSketch: Baldwin I (probably 830s – 879), also known as Baldwin Iron Arm and Baudouin, was the first margrave of Flanders. Early sources identify Baldwin (Baudouin) as the son of Odacre (also spelled Audacer) ruler of Flanders. Odacre is believed to have died when his son was still very young, too young to rule. It is not known who ruled Flanders between Odacre's death and the time his son was appointed. When Baldwin first appears in the records he was already a count, presumably in the area of Flanders, but this is not known. Count Baldwin rose to prominence when he eloped with Judith, daughter of Charles the Bald, king of West Francia. Judith had previously been married to Æthelwulf and Æthelbald, kings of Wessex, but after the latter's death in 860, she returned to France. Around the Christmas of 861, at the instigation of Baldwin and with her brother Louis's consent, Judith escaped the custody into which she had been placed in the city of Senlis, Oise after her return from England. She fled north with Count Baldwin. Charles had given no permission for a marriage and tried to capture Baldwin, sending letters to Rorik of Dorestad and Bishop Hungar, forbidding them to shelter the fugitive. After Baldwin and Judith had evaded his attempts to capture them, Charles had his bishops excommunicate the couple. Judith and Baldwin responded by travelling to Rome to plead their case with Pope Nicholas I. Their plea was successful and Charles was forced to accept the situation. The marriage took place on 13 December 862 in Auxerre. By 870, Baldwin had acquired the lay-abbacy of Saint Peter's Abbey in Ghent and is assumed to have also acquired the counties of Flanders and Waasland, or parts thereof by this time. Baldwin I and Judith had four children: - Charles, who was named after his maternal grandfather but died at a young age - Baldwin II (c. 866 – 918), who succeeded as margrave of Flanders - Ralph (c. 869 – murdered 896), who became count of Cambrai around 888; he and his brother joined King Zwentibold of Lotharingia in 895, attacked Vermandois and captured Arras, Saint-Quentin and Peronne, and ended up captured and killed by Herbert I of Vermandois - Guinidilda, who married Wilfred I the Hairy, Count of Barcelona Baldwin developed himself as a very faithful and stout supporter of Charles and played an important role in the continuing wars against the Vikings. He is named in 877 as one of those willing to support the emperor's son, Louis the Stammerer. During his life, Baldwin expanded his territory into one of the major principalities of Western Francia. He died in 879 and was buried in the Abbey of St-Bertin, near Saint-Omer.

- Also known as: Basina II de Thüringia Queen of Franks
- Title Of Nobility: Queen of the Salian Franks
- Recent historians view "Basina" of Thuringia as ahistorical, believing that she may have been from Tongeren (aka Tungrorum.): The view is that the story regarding Basinis of Thuringia being deserted by Basina for Chilperic is out character for the times. --During the reign of Childeric I, Gregory of Tours and Fredegar record that the Frankish King married the runaway wife of the King of the Thuringians, but the story may be distorted. (For example, the area of Tongeren, now in Belgium, may have been intended.[7])
- LifeSketch: Basena probably came from the Thuringian people, perhaps from their royal family. The historian Gregor von Tours, followed by the Fredegar Chronicle and the Liber historiae Francorum, reports that her first marriage was to Bisinus, King of the Thuringians. In Thuringia she got to know Childerich, who was there in exile after his deposition. After eight years of exile, Childerich was recalled and reinstated as king by his people. Then Basena left her husband and went to Childerich on the grounds that he was the bravest man she knew, so she wanted to connect with him. Then he happily took her as his wife. This legendary tale is viewed with skepticism by scholars, especially since Bisinus ruled in the early 6th century, while Childerich died in 482. The Thuringian origin of Basenas is accepted. ------------------ From Wikipedia- Childeric I was a Frankish leader in the northern part of imperial Roman Gaul and a member of ... In 463, Basina married Childeric I, son of Merovech and his wife Basina or Basine (c. 438 – 477) was remembered as a queen of Thuringia in the middle of the fifth century, according to much later authors such as Gregory of Tours. However, because he described this kingdom as being on the Gaulish side of the river Rhine, it is sometimes thought to be the Civitas Tungrorum. She left her husband, King Bisinus and went to Roman Gaul. She herself took the initiative to ask for the hand of Childeric I, king of the Franks, and married him. For as she herself said, "I want to have the most powerful man in the world, even if I have to cross the ocean for him". This remark of hers may have been related to Childeric's successful invasion of the Roman Empire and his attempt to settle a Frankish kingdom on Roman soil. She is the mother of the man who is remembered as the founder of the Frankish realm and modern France. She and her husband Childeric named their son Chlodovech, but he is better remembered under his Latinized name, Clovis I. According to the Gesta episcoporum Cameracensium, King Ragnachar and his brother Richar, from the area of Cambrai were related to Basina. In 463, Basina married Childeric I, son of Merovech and his wife, and had the following children: Clovis I (466 – 511). Audofleda (467 – 511). Queen of the Ostrogoths. Wife of Theodoric the Great Lanthilde (468 – ¿¿??). Aboflede (470 – ¿¿??).

- LifeSketch: from Wikipedia Saint Bavo of Ghent (also known as Bavon, Allowin, Bavonius, and Baaf) (622–659) is a Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox saint. Life Bavo was born near Liège, Belgium, to a Frankish noble family that gave him the name Allowin. His father was Pippin of Landen, the Mayor of the Palace of Austrasia. Wild as a youth and selfish, he was known to have sold servants to local nobles as slaves.[citation needed] He contracted a beneficial marriage, and had a daughter through it. He was a soldier; however, he led an undisciplined and disorderly life. Shortly after the death of his wife, Bavo decided to reform himself upon hearing a sermon preached by a monk, Saint Amand. Bavo was struck after the sermon at the emptiness of material objects and donated his wealth to the poor after he converted to Christianity at Amand's convent. Bavo traveled with Amand for some time in his missionary work through France and Flanders. On one occasion, Bavo met a man whom he had sold years before. Wishing to atone for this earlier conduct, Bavo had the man lead him by chain to the town jail. He built an abbey on his grounds and became a monk. He distributed his belongings to the poor and lived as a recluse, first in a hollow tree, later in a cell in the forest near the Abbey. He died at St. Bavo's Abbey in Ghent, in today's Belgium. Veneration Bavo is the patron saint of Ghent and Lauwe, Belgium and Haarlem, the Netherlands. He is most often shown in Christian art as a knight with a sword and falcon. The most popular scene is the moment of his conversion, which has many stories attached to it. Because he is so often show with a falcon, he came to be considered the patron saint of falconry. In Ghent, in medieval times, taxes were paid on October 1, and for this reason Bavo is often shown holding a purse or money bag. According to Rodulfus Glaber, the city of Bamberg is named after him, with Bamberg meaning 'Mount of Bavo'. His feast day in the Orthodox Church is October 1. Several churches are dedicated to him, including: •Saint Bavo Cathedral, in Ghent •Sint-Bavokerk and Cathedral of Saint Bavo, both in Haarlem •Sint-Bavokerk in Heemstede and Lauwe •Saint Bavo Church and School, in Mishawaka, Indiana •Sint-Bavokerk in Wilrijk His picture is also part of the Coat of Arms of the Antwerp suburb Wilrijk. www.catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=555

- LifeSketch: Begga was the daughter of Pippin von Landen and Itta von Nivelles, sister of Bavo von Gent and Gertrud von Nivelles, according to the description of her merits from around 700. Around 635 she became the wife of Ansegisel, the son of Bishop Arnulf von Metz and the mother of Pippin von Heristal, thus the ancestor of Charlemagne. After her husband was murdered, she went on a pilgrimage to the seven pilgrimage churches in Rome; this was the first time that the number seven, which then became a tradition, appears for the pilgrimage to Rome. After her return, Begga founded the monastery with the seven chapels in Andenne on the Meuse, which were supposed to correspond to the seven main churches of Rome, around 692 with the help of her sisters Gertrud and nuns from Nivelles; Birds are said to have shown her the place in a dream. Begga was buried in her monastery in Andenne.

- LifeSketch: Berig is a legendary king of the Goths appearing in the Getica by Jordanes. According to Jordanes, Berig led his people on three ships from Scandza (Scandinavia) to Gothiscandza (the Vistula Basin). They settled and then attacked the Rugians who lived on the shore and drove them away from their homes, subsequently winning a battle against the Vandals. The name is said to stem from the Gothic Bairika, which translates as "Little Bear". A Danish historian, Arne Søby has nonetheless proposed that Cassiodorus, who wrote the original text on which Jordanes' work is based, invented him, with inspiration from the name of Βέρικος (Berikos or Verica). Recent archaeological research demonstrates, however, that the transition of Oksywie culture into Wielbark culture was peaceful and its timing coincides with the appearance of new population of Scandinavian origins in previously uninhabited area ("no man's land") between the Oksywie and Przeworsk culture areas. "Now from this island of Scandza, as from a hive of races or a womb of nations, the Goths are said to have come forth long ago under their king, BERIG by name. As soon as they disembarked from their ships and set foot on the land, they straightaway gave their name to the place. And even to-day it is said to be called Gothiscandza. Soon they moved from here to the abodes of the Ulmerugi, who then dwelt on the shores of Ocean, where they pitched camp, joined battle with them and drove them from their homes. Then they subdued their neighbors, the Vandals, and thus added to their victories. But when the number of the people increased greatly and FILIMER, son of GADARIC, reigned as king -- about the fifth since Berig -- he decided that the army of the Goths with their families should move from that region. In search of suitable homes and pleasant places they came to the land of Scythia, called _Oium_ in that tongue." (p.57) "You surely remember that in the beginning I said the Goths went forth from the bosom of the island of Scandza with BERIG, their king, sailing in only three ships toward the hither shore of Ocean, namely to Gothiscandza." (p.78) "The period of this earliest King of the Goths is thought by Muellenhoff to be not earlier than the first century of our era. Relying on Pliny (N.H., 37, 2 and 4,14) Hodgkin argues (Italy and her invaders, 1892, I. I, 34), that the Goths were settled on the Baltic as least as early as 330 B.C., and possibly as early as the sixth century B.C." (p.145 -- endnote 25) Berig, name in traditional pedigree has be identified with Boiorix, a Gothic king, d101BC. As for BOIORIX, he was not a Gothic king, but rather was king of the Cimbri, a completely different Germanic tribe. Boiorix led an invasion of Roman territory around 105 B.C., and the Romans under general Marius desperately threw back the German invaders. Boiorix was slain in 101 B.C. There is no reason to believe he was the same as the Gothic king Berig, and plenty of reason to believe Berig and Boiorix were two different kings. There is a superficial similarity in their names, and they were both Germanic kings, but that's where the similarity begins and ends. Indeed, if Hodgkin was right, and there is anything to the legend of King Berig, we would have to place Berig at least 200 years before the time of King Boiorix. Of course, according to Jordanes (who was following Cassiodorus's lost Gothic history), Berig supposedly lived well before the time of Pharaoh Sesostris (Senusert III), whom Jordanes calls Vesosis. Medieval and Renaissance Swedish legends claimed Berig, Filimer, and Gadaric as ancient Swedish/Gautish kings. - LifeSketch: Bertha (c. 780 – after 11 March 824) was the seventh child and third daughter of Charlemagne, King of the Franks, by his second wife, Hildegard of the Vinzgau. Bertha was raised with her brothers and sisters in the royal household of Charlemagne, who had all of his children educated by tutors. An offer by Offa of Mercia to arrange a marriage between Bertha and his son, Ecgfrith, led to Charlemagne breaking off diplomatic relations with Mercia in 790, and banning English ships from his ports. Like her sisters, Bertha never formally married; it has been speculated that Charlemagne did not want his daughters married for strategic reasons, fearing political rivalry from their potential husbands. Bertha was in a long relationship with Angilbert, a court official, which produced three children. During 794-5, Angilbert presented a poem as a court entertainment, praising the beauty and charms of Charlemagne's daughters; Bertha is praised in particular for having critical discernment and appreciation for poetry, which Angilbert points out is a cause for him to be concerned about how she might receive his poem. Bertha's children with Angilbert: -Hartnid, about whom little is known -Nithard, Abbott of St. Riquier, the historian -Bertha who went on to marry Helgaud II, Count of Ponthieu. Angilbert ended his affair with Bertha and entered a monastery, becoming Abbott of St. Riquier, according to a biography written by their son, Nithard. Angilbert remained an important advisor to Charlemagne, however. The children of Bertha and Angilbert were likely educated in Charlemagne's court. Nithard was a distinguished soldier and politician, and acted as an advisor to Charles the Bald of France. Following the death of Charlemagne, his successor, Louis the Pious, exiled his sisters to the convents that had been left for their inheritance by their father. -------------- “Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013): “CHARLEMAGNE, King of the Franks, 768-814, King of the Langobards, 773-814, Emperor of the Romans, 800-814, son of Pépin (nicknamed "le Bref”), King of the Franks, by Bertrade, daughter of Charibert, Count of Laon. On the death of his father in 768, he became King of the Franks jointly with his brother, Carloman, and was crowned 9 October 768 at Noyon. He married (1st c.769-770, daughter of Desiderius, king of the Lombards. They had no issue. He married (2nd) before 30 April 771 HILDEGARDE, daughter of Gerold I, Count in Vinzgau, by Imma (or Emma), daughter of Count Nebi (or Hnabi). They had four sons, Charles, Pépin [King of Italy], Louis (I) [King of Aquitaine, Emperor], and Lothair, and five daughters, Adelaide (or Adelheid), Rotrude, Berthe, Gisele, and Hildegarde. On the death of his brother, Carloman, in 771, he reunited his father's possessions. He conquered the kingdom of the Lombards in 773. He used the title "rex Francorum et Langobardorum" from 5 June 774, adding "atque patricius Romanorum" from 16 July 774. His wife, Hildegarde, died at Thionville (Moselle) 30 April 783, and was buried in the church of the abbey of Saint Arnoul at Metz. He married (3rd) at Worms in October 783 FASTRADA, daughter of Radulf, Count in Franconia. They had two daughters, Theodrade [Abbess of Argenteuil] and Hiltrude. Riquier, the historian Angilbert ended his affair with Bertha and entered a monastery, becoming Abbott of St. -------------- “

- Birth: 539, Paris, Kingdom of Neustria, Gaul, Frankish Empire
- Title Of Nobility: Queen of Kent
- LifeSketch: Wikipedia Saint Bertha or Saint Aldeberge (c. 565 – d. in or after 601) was the queen of Kent whose influence led to the Christianization of Anglo-Saxon England. She was canonized as a saint for her role in its establishment during that period of English history. Life Bertha was a Frankish princess, the daughter of Charibert I and his wife Ingoberga, granddaughter of the reigning King Chlothar I and great-granddaughter of Clovis I and Saint Clotilde. Her father died in 567, her mother in 589. Bertha had been raised near Tours. Her marriage to the pagan Æthelberht of Kent, in 580 AD, was on condition that she be allowed to practice her religion. She brought her chaplain, Liudhard, with her to England. A former Roman church was restored for Bertha just outside the City of Canterbury, and dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours. It was the private chapel of Queen Bertha before Augustine arrived from Rome. The present St Martin's Church continues on the same site, incorporating Roman walling of the original church in the chancel. It is acknowledged by UNESCO as the oldest church in the English-speaking world where Christian worship has taken place continuously since 580 AD. St Martin's (with Canterbury Cathedral and St Augustine's Abbey) make up Canterbury's UNESCO World Heritage site. Pope Gregory the Great sent a Mission led by Augustine of Canterbury, to restore Christianity to England in 596. The Mission's favourable reception upon arrival in 597 AD owed much to the influence of Bertha. Without her support and Æthelberht's good will, monastic settlements and the cathedral would likely have been developed elsewhere. In 601, Pope Gregory addressed a letter to Bertha, in which he complimented her highly on her faith and knowledge of letters. Anglo-Saxon records indicate that Saint Bertha had two children: . Eadbald of Kent, and . Æthelburg of Kent. She is named in the genealogies of various of the medieval accounts of the 'Kentish Royal Legend'. The date of her death (possibly 606) is disputed. Legacy The city of Canterbury celebrates Queen Bertha in many ways. The Bertha trail, consisting of 14 bronze plaques set in pavements, runs from the Buttermarket to St Martin's church via Lady Wootton's Green. In 2006, bronze statues of Bertha and Ethelbert were installed on Lady Wootton's Green as part of the Canterbury Commemoration Society's "Ethelbert and Bertha" project There is a wooden statue of Bertha inside St Martin's church. *************************** Foundation for Medieval Genealogy Parents of Bertha - 560 King Charibert & his first wife had one child: a) BERTA ([before 560]-[601/before 616], bur Canterbury, Church of St Peter and St Paul). Gregory of Tours records that the daughter of King Charibert and Ingoberg "eventually married a man from Kent and went to live there". Bede records that "rex Aedilberct in Cantia" had "uxorem…Christianam de gente Francorum regia…Bercta" whom he had received "a parentibus" on condition she retained her religion. It is reasonable to assume that Berta was born before 560, given the subsequent marital history of her father, who died in 567 having married three times after repudiating his first wife, although it is possible that some if not all of his marriages were polygamous. Kirby suggests that Berta's marriage took place in 580 after analysing the various contradictory chronological indications in contemporary sources. According to Bede, as noted above, King Æthelberht received Bertha "a parentibus". As her father died in 567, and her mother in 589, this appears to mean that she married before 567 if taken literally, which seems unlikely. The word "parents" may in this context mean "relatives" more broadly. Already a Christian when she came to England, she was accompanied by Liudhard, a Frankish bishop, although if he attempted to convert her husband his efforts must have been unsuccessful in view of the later conversion of King Æthelberht by St Augustine. Queen Berta is named in Pope Gregory I's letter of 601 to her husband. Bede records the burial of "Aedilbert tex Cantuariorum" in "portico sancti Martini intro ecclesiam beatorum apostolorum Petri et Pauli" stating that this was where "Berctæ regina" was buried. m (580) as his first wife, ÆTHELBERHT King of Kent, son of EORMENRIC King of Kent & his wife --- (after [550]-24 Feb 616, bur Canterbury, Church of St Peter and St Paul. .

- LifeSketch: Cadell, Anarawd, and Mervyn are recorded in the Triads as the "Tri theyrn tal- eithiawg," or three diademed princes of the Isle of Britain. (My v. Arch. ii. 64.) Another note: One of the Triads speaks of Anarawd and his brothers as 'Tri theyrn taleithiog Ynys Prydain,' or 'Tri thywysog taleithiog,' 'the three diademed princes of the Isle of Britian.' [Dictionary of National Biography I:370] ......................................... ANARAWD, is stated by some that he was the eldest son of Rhodri Mawr, who was sovereign prince of all Wales, which he divided between his three sons, on his death in A. D. 876. Anarawd had for his share Gwynedd or North Wales : Cadell had South Wales, and Mervyn had Powys. It has long been a matter of dispute whether Cadell or Anarawd was the elder brother. Dr. Owen Pughe, in his Cambrian Biography, calls Cadell the eldest; so likewise does Price in his Hanes Cymru, p. 392, but in p. 397, Anarawd is called the eldest. This dispute gave rise to a treatise by the eminent antiquary Vaughan of Hengwrt, entitled " British Antiquities revived," which was printed in Oxford, 1662, 4 to. and of which a second edition was published at Bala in 1834,4to. In this it appears to be well argued that Anarawd was the eldest, and had paramount authority over his brothers. However, his crown was far from being light, as he was engaged in constant wars with the Saxons. In 880, he fought the battle of Cymryd near the town of Aberconwy in Caernarvonshire, where he defeated the Saxons with great slaughter, and avenged the death of his father, who had been slain by them in "Anglesey. This battle is called in Welsh history," Dial Rhodri." His reign is also remarkable for the migration of the Northern Britons in 890, who, being pressed by their enemies, left Stratclyde, and were hospitably received by Anarawd, who gave them lands in Denbighshire and Flintshire, on condition that they expelled the Saxons who had taken possession of them, which was satisfactorily accomplished. In 892, Anarawd invaded his brother's territories in South Wales, which he laid waste with fire and sword. In 900, Cadell, who had previously reduced Powys under his dominion, died, and Anarawd thus became sovereign prince of all Wales, and reigned until his death in 913, when he left three sons,Edwal Vool, Ellis, and Meurig. From a "Historical Chronology of the Early British Kingdoms, Part 5: AD 805-937" at www.earlybritishkingdoms.com/kingdoms: 878 King Rhodri Mawr of Gwynedd, Powys, and Seisyllwg returns to his kingdoms, but is killed fighting the Mercians of King Ceolwulf II. His kingdoms are divided amongst his three sons, Anarawd, Merfyn and Cadell respectively. The Vikings winter in Dyfed. Death of King Run of Strathclyde. His son, Eochaid, succeeds to the throne and allies himself with his mother's cousin, King Giric of Alba. The two rule all Scotland together as join-monarchs. 880 King Anarawd of Gwynedd inititates a revenge attack on the Mercian armies and defeats them on the River Conwy. c881 King Anarawd of Gwynedd and his brothers begin extensive military campaigns to quell resistance in Powys and Seisyllwg. c885 Kings Hyfaidd of Dyfed, Elisedd of Brycheiniog and Hywel of Glywysing are harassed by the armies of King Anarawd of Gwynedd. They seek the protection of King Alfred of England and submit to his overlordship. Anarawd seeks an alliance with the Norse Kings of York. 894 King Anarawd of Gwynedd's shaky alliance with the Vikings collapses. His kingdom is ravaged by the Norsemen. Anarawd is forced to ask for help from King Alfred of England and submits to his overlordship. Alfred imposed oppressive terms and forces Anarawd to confirmation in the Christian Church with Alfred as godfather. 895 King Anarawd of Gwynedd is supplied with Englis troops to assist in his reconquest of Seisyllwg. he is successful and his brother, King Cadell, is finally able to take his rightful place on the Seisyllwg throne. Cadell ap Rhodri (854–909) was King of Seisyllwg, a minor kingdom in southwestern Wales, from about 872 until his death. Cadell was the second son of Rhodri the Great of Gwynedd and Angharad, a princess from Seisyllwg. In 872 Angharad's brother Gwgon, King of Seisyllwg, drowned without leaving an heir. Rhodri became steward over the kingdom, and while he was unable to make a legal claim to the throne, he was able to install Cadell as king.[1] He passed it to his son, Hywel Dda, at his death in 909. Cadell and Hywel together also conquered Dyfed in 904–905, establishing Hywel as the king in that region. After his father's death, Hywel ruled the kingdoms jointly as Deheubarth.

- Father: Charles II LE CHAUVE Empereur d'Occident
- Mother: Ermentrude D'ORLÉANS Reine des Francs
- Birth: ABT 849, Francie occidentale
- Also known as: Karlmann
- Title Of Nobility: Prince of Franks
- LifeSketch: Carloman was the youngest son of Charles the Bald, king of West Francia, and his first wife, Ermentrude. Born in 848, Carloman was tonsured as a child in 854, his father decided he would dedicate his life to the church. This was done with the future in mind, to preventing a partition of the kingdom. Carloman was tutored by Abbot Wulfad, a future archbishop. In 860 Carloman was ordained a deacon and acquired the abbacy of Saint-Médard de Soissons. In the following decade he acquired the abbacies of Saint-Amand d'Elnon, Saint-Riquier, Lobbes and Saint-Arnould de Metz. In 865, Lothair the Lame, Carloman's older brother and fellow ecclesiastic, died and Carloman succeeded him in the abbey of Saint-Germain d'Auxerre. In 866 Charles the Child, King of Aquitaine, died. With the death of his brothers, Carloman became second in line to the throne after his oldest brother, Louis the Stammerer. Charles the Bald's fears for the kingdom had been well founded, Carloman resented being forced into the church, by 870 he had gathered an aristocratic following, mostly from Lotharingia and Flanders. Anticipating a revolt, Charles put Carloman's defiance to an end. Carloman was arrested, tried, imprisoned at Senlis, and his abbacies forfeited. Carloman escaped to Flanders, where he gathered a small army. In early 871 Carloman and all his supporters were excommunicated. Carloman was re-tried in 873 and blinded, but escaped imprisonment by fleeing to the protection of his uncle, King Louis the German, in East Francia. Carloman died there about 877. ------------- “Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013): “CHARLES II the Bald, King of Neustria, 838-840, King of the West Franks, 840-877, King of (western) Lorraine, 870-877, King of Italy, 875-877, Emperor, 875-877, son by his father's 2nd marriage, born at Frankfurt-am-Main 13 June 823. He married (1st) at Quierzy, Aisne 13 Dec. 842 ERMENTRUDE OF ORLÉANS, daughter of Eudes, Count of Orléans, by his wife, Engeltrude. She was born 27 Sept., about 830. They had six sons, Louis (II) [King of Neustria, King of Aquitaine, King of France], Charles [King of Aquitaine], Karlmann (or Carloman) [Abbot of St.-Germain of Auxerre], Lothair [Abbot of St.-Germain of Auxerre], Dreux, and Pépin, and four daughters, Judith, Hildegarde, Ermentrude [Abbess of Hasnon], and Gisela (or Gisele). His wife, Ermentrude, died 6 October 869. He married (2nd) 12 October 869, confirmed at Aix-la-Chapelle 22 Jan. 870 RICHILDE OF GORZE, daughter of Bivin, Count and Abbot of Gorze, by daughter of Boson l'Ancien, count in Italy. They had three children, including one son, Charles, and one daughter, Rothilde (wife of Rodgar [or Roger], Count of Maine). CHARLES II the Bald, Emperor, King of the West Franks, died at Brides-les-Bains (Savoie, Fr.) 6 October 877, and was buried at Nantua monastery, later at St. Denis. - Father: Hlodowig I. fränkischer König
- Mother: Chrodechilde VON BURGUND Königin der Franken
- Birth: 496, Reims, Kingdom of Austrasia, Frankish Empire
- Title Of Nobility: King of the Franks at Paris, 511, Paris, Gaul, Kingdom of the Franks
- LifeSketch: From Wikipedia- Childebert I (c. 496 – 13 December 558) was a Frankish King of the Merovingian dynasty, as third of the four sons of Clovis I who shared the kingdom of the Franks upon their father's death in 511. He was one of the sons of Saint Clotilda, born at Reims. He reigned as King of Paris from 511 to 558 and Orléans from 524 to 558. Biography The division of the lands of Gaul to the sons of Clovis I upon his death in 511. In the partition of the realm, Childebert received as his share the town of Paris, the country to the north as far as the river Somme, to the west as far as the English Channel, and the Armorican peninsula (modern Brittany). His brothers ruled in different lands: Theuderic I in Metz, Chlodomer in Orléans, and Clothar I in Soissons. In 523, Childebert participated with his brothers in a war against Godomar of Burgundy. Chlodomer died in the Battle of Vézeronce (524). Thereafter, concerned that the three sons of Chlodomer would inherit the kingdom of Orléans, Clothar conspired with Childebert to oust them. They sent a representative to their mother Clotilde, who as the queen mother had authority as the head of the family line. The representative presented a pair of scissors and a sword, offering her the choice to shear the three young boys, thereby depriving them of the long hair considered a symbol of royal power, or to have them killed. She famously replied, "It is better for me to see them dead rather than shorn, if they are not raised to the kingship".[1] After the murder of Chlodomer's two elder children—the third, Clodoald, escaping to a monastic life—Childebert annexed the cities of Chartres and Orléans. He took part in later various expeditions against the kingdom of Burgundy. He besieged Autun in 532 and, in 534, having conquered the kingdom along with his brother Clothar and Theuderic's son Theudebert I, received as his share of the spoils of that kingdom the towns of Mâcon, Geneva, and Lyons. When Witiges, the king of the Ostrogoths, ceded Provence to the Franks in 535, the possession of Arles and Marseilles was guaranteed to Childebert by his brothers. The annexation of that province was completed, with Clotaire's help, in the winter of 536–537. In 531, he received pleas from his sister Chrotilda, wife of King Amalaric of the Visigoths. The Arian king of Hispania, Chrotilda claimed, was grossly mistreating her, a Catholic. Childebert went down with an army and defeated the Gothic king. Amalaric retreated to Barcelona, where he was assassinated. Chrotilda died on her return journey to Paris of unknown causes. Childebert made other expeditions against the Visigoths. In 542, he took possession of Pamplona with the help of his brother Clotaire and besieged Zaragoza, but was forced to retreat. From this expedition he brought back to Paris a precious relic, the tunic of Saint Vincent, in honour of which he built at the gates of Paris the famous monastery of Sainte-Croix-et-Saint-Vincent, known later as St-Germain-des-Prés. He died on 13 December 558, and was buried in the abbey he had founded, where his tomb has been discovered.[2] St-Germain-des-Prés became the royal necropolis for the Neustrian kings until 675.[3] He left no sons, only two daughters, Chrodoberge and Chrodesinde, by his wife Ultragotha. Childebert was an acquisitive monarch. He expanded his domains in more foreign wars than any of his brothers, fighting in Burgundy (more than once), Spain (more than once), Provence, and elsewhere in Gaul. Gregory of Tours, a contemporary Neustrian, cites Childebert as saying: "Velim unquam Arvernam Lemanem quae tantae jocunditatis gratia refulgere dicitur, oculis cernere" ("Would that I could set eyes on the Auvergne Limagne, which is spoken of so highly"). Childbert was also one of the more religious of the sons of Clovis, cooperating with his brothers, rescuing his sister, and constructing the famous monastery of Saint Vincent to house his relics. Ancestry His father was Clovis I and his mother was Clotilde. They had 5 children: 1. Chlotaire I, King of Soissons 2. Childebert I, King of Paris 3. Chlodomir I, King of Orleans 4. Theodoric I, King of Reims 5. Chlotilde, Queen Consort of Amalric of the Visigoths

He was father of Clovis I, who acquired lordship over all or most Frankish kingdoms, and a significant part of Roman Gaul.
