Gregory of Tours records that the sister of Clovis was "tricked by Fredegund's servants and persuaded into entering a nunnery…where she remains to this day"[338], dated to late 580 from the context, although it is not certain that this relates to Basina. Gregory names Basina as the daughter of King Chilperich and Audovera whom her father confined in a nunnery in Poitiers, when recording that in 584 her father considered sending her to Spain as the bride for Recarred, in place of her half-sister[339]. Gregory also records that she became a nun at the convent of Sainte-Croix in Poitiers, but was involved in the revolt against abbess Leubovera[340].

- Father: Pippin DER ÄLTERE Maior Domus
- Mother: Ittaberga DE NIVELLES
- Birth: 622, Kingdom of Austrasia, Frankish Empire
- LifeSketch: from Wikipedia Saint Bavo of Ghent (also known as Bavon, Allowin, Bavonius, and Baaf) (622–659) is a Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox saint. Life Bavo was born near Liège, Belgium, to a Frankish noble family that gave him the name Allowin. His father was Pippin of Landen, the Mayor of the Palace of Austrasia. Wild as a youth and selfish, he was known to have sold servants to local nobles as slaves.[citation needed] He contracted a beneficial marriage, and had a daughter through it. He was a soldier; however, he led an undisciplined and disorderly life. Shortly after the death of his wife, Bavo decided to reform himself upon hearing a sermon preached by a monk, Saint Amand. Bavo was struck after the sermon at the emptiness of material objects and donated his wealth to the poor after he converted to Christianity at Amand's convent. Bavo traveled with Amand for some time in his missionary work through France and Flanders. On one occasion, Bavo met a man whom he had sold years before. Wishing to atone for this earlier conduct, Bavo had the man lead him by chain to the town jail. He built an abbey on his grounds and became a monk. He distributed his belongings to the poor and lived as a recluse, first in a hollow tree, later in a cell in the forest near the Abbey. He died at St. Bavo's Abbey in Ghent, in today's Belgium. Veneration Bavo is the patron saint of Ghent and Lauwe, Belgium and Haarlem, the Netherlands. He is most often shown in Christian art as a knight with a sword and falcon. The most popular scene is the moment of his conversion, which has many stories attached to it. Because he is so often show with a falcon, he came to be considered the patron saint of falconry. In Ghent, in medieval times, taxes were paid on October 1, and for this reason Bavo is often shown holding a purse or money bag. According to Rodulfus Glaber, the city of Bamberg is named after him, with Bamberg meaning 'Mount of Bavo'. His feast day in the Orthodox Church is October 1. Several churches are dedicated to him, including: •Saint Bavo Cathedral, in Ghent •Sint-Bavokerk and Cathedral of Saint Bavo, both in Haarlem •Sint-Bavokerk in Heemstede and Lauwe •Saint Bavo Church and School, in Mishawaka, Indiana •Sint-Bavokerk in Wilrijk His picture is also part of the Coat of Arms of the Antwerp suburb Wilrijk. www.catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=555

- Begga gründete 691/92 nach Ansegisels Tod das Kloster Andenne: Begga founded the Andenne monastery in 691/92 after Ansegisel's death
- LifeSketch: Begga was the daughter of Pippin von Landen and Itta von Nivelles, sister of Bavo von Gent and Gertrud von Nivelles, according to the description of her merits from around 700. Around 635 she became the wife of Ansegisel, the son of Bishop Arnulf von Metz and the mother of Pippin von Heristal, thus the ancestor of Charlemagne. After her husband was murdered, she went on a pilgrimage to the seven pilgrimage churches in Rome; this was the first time that the number seven, which then became a tradition, appears for the pilgrimage to Rome. After her return, Begga founded the monastery with the seven chapels in Andenne on the Meuse, which were supposed to correspond to the seven main churches of Rome, around 692 with the help of her sisters Gertrud and nuns from Nivelles; Birds are said to have shown her the place in a dream. Begga was buried in her monastery in Andenne.

- Birth: 539, Paris, Kingdom of Neustria, Gaul, Frankish Empire
- Title Of Nobility: Queen of Kent
- LifeSketch: Wikipedia Saint Bertha or Saint Aldeberge (c. 565 – d. in or after 601) was the queen of Kent whose influence led to the Christianization of Anglo-Saxon England. She was canonized as a saint for her role in its establishment during that period of English history. Life Bertha was a Frankish princess, the daughter of Charibert I and his wife Ingoberga, granddaughter of the reigning King Chlothar I and great-granddaughter of Clovis I and Saint Clotilde. Her father died in 567, her mother in 589. Bertha had been raised near Tours. Her marriage to the pagan Æthelberht of Kent, in 580 AD, was on condition that she be allowed to practice her religion. She brought her chaplain, Liudhard, with her to England. A former Roman church was restored for Bertha just outside the City of Canterbury, and dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours. It was the private chapel of Queen Bertha before Augustine arrived from Rome. The present St Martin's Church continues on the same site, incorporating Roman walling of the original church in the chancel. It is acknowledged by UNESCO as the oldest church in the English-speaking world where Christian worship has taken place continuously since 580 AD. St Martin's (with Canterbury Cathedral and St Augustine's Abbey) make up Canterbury's UNESCO World Heritage site. Pope Gregory the Great sent a Mission led by Augustine of Canterbury, to restore Christianity to England in 596. The Mission's favourable reception upon arrival in 597 AD owed much to the influence of Bertha. Without her support and Æthelberht's good will, monastic settlements and the cathedral would likely have been developed elsewhere. In 601, Pope Gregory addressed a letter to Bertha, in which he complimented her highly on her faith and knowledge of letters. Anglo-Saxon records indicate that Saint Bertha had two children: . Eadbald of Kent, and . Æthelburg of Kent. She is named in the genealogies of various of the medieval accounts of the 'Kentish Royal Legend'. The date of her death (possibly 606) is disputed. Legacy The city of Canterbury celebrates Queen Bertha in many ways. The Bertha trail, consisting of 14 bronze plaques set in pavements, runs from the Buttermarket to St Martin's church via Lady Wootton's Green. In 2006, bronze statues of Bertha and Ethelbert were installed on Lady Wootton's Green as part of the Canterbury Commemoration Society's "Ethelbert and Bertha" project There is a wooden statue of Bertha inside St Martin's church. *************************** Foundation for Medieval Genealogy Parents of Bertha - 560 King Charibert & his first wife had one child: a) BERTA ([before 560]-[601/before 616], bur Canterbury, Church of St Peter and St Paul). Gregory of Tours records that the daughter of King Charibert and Ingoberg "eventually married a man from Kent and went to live there". Bede records that "rex Aedilberct in Cantia" had "uxorem…Christianam de gente Francorum regia…Bercta" whom he had received "a parentibus" on condition she retained her religion. It is reasonable to assume that Berta was born before 560, given the subsequent marital history of her father, who died in 567 having married three times after repudiating his first wife, although it is possible that some if not all of his marriages were polygamous. Kirby suggests that Berta's marriage took place in 580 after analysing the various contradictory chronological indications in contemporary sources. According to Bede, as noted above, King Æthelberht received Bertha "a parentibus". As her father died in 567, and her mother in 589, this appears to mean that she married before 567 if taken literally, which seems unlikely. The word "parents" may in this context mean "relatives" more broadly. Already a Christian when she came to England, she was accompanied by Liudhard, a Frankish bishop, although if he attempted to convert her husband his efforts must have been unsuccessful in view of the later conversion of King Æthelberht by St Augustine. Queen Berta is named in Pope Gregory I's letter of 601 to her husband. Bede records the burial of "Aedilbert tex Cantuariorum" in "portico sancti Martini intro ecclesiam beatorum apostolorum Petri et Pauli" stating that this was where "Berctæ regina" was buried. m (580) as his first wife, ÆTHELBERHT King of Kent, son of EORMENRIC King of Kent & his wife --- (after [550]-24 Feb 616, bur Canterbury, Church of St Peter and St Paul. .

The Chronicon Angliæ records that “regina” gave birth “in turri Londoniarum” to “filiam...Blanchiam” who died “inter lactandum” and was buried “apud Westmonasterium”, dated to [1340/41] from the context[959]. Assuming that the births of the king´s other children are correctly dated in the same source, Blanche was more probably born in 1342, but this is not beyond doubt.

Caecilia Metalla
- Father: Lucius Caecilius Metellus DALMATICUS Pontifex Maximus
- Mother: Cornelia SCIPIA
- Birth: ABT 113 BC, Roma, Roman Republic
- LifeSketch: Wikiiwand Caecilia Metella (died around 80 BC) was an Roman matron at the beginning of the 1st century BC. The daughter of the pontifiex maximus Lucius Caecilius Metellus Dalmaticus, she married two of the most prominent politicians of the period, first the princeps senatus Marcus Aemilius Scaurus, then Lucius Cornelius Sulla. Life Caecilia belonged to the plebeian family of the Caecilii Metelli, at the time the most important family of the late second century. Her father was Lucius Caecilius Metellus Dalmaticus, consul in 119 BC and pontifex maximus circa 114. Her first marriage was to Marcus Aemilius Scaurus, an ageing politician at the peak of his power. Scaurus was a patrician, the princeps senatus (president of the Senate) and a traditional ally of her family. Caecilia bore Scaurus two children: Marcus Aemilius Scaurus and Aemilia. Following Scaurus' death in 89, Caecilia married Lucius Cornelius Sulla, who was fifty. In his account of the life of Sulla, Plutarch wrote that this was a prestigious marriage for Sulla due to Caecilia being the daughter of the Pontifex Maximus, the high priest of Roman state religion. The marriage was ridiculed by the people and many leading men were dissatisfied because they thought that it was unworthy of Caecilia. She became Sulla's third wife and he married her only a few days after divorcing Cloelia for 'barrenness'. Because of this and despite the fact that Sulla praised Cloelia and gave her gifts, many thought that he had accused her unfairly. However, he always showed Caecilia great deference. Because of this, when Sulla refused the request of the people to restore the exiled supporters of Marius (after Sulla's march on Rome in 88 BC) they asked Caecilia for help. Plutarch wrote that it "was thought also that when [Sulla] took the city of Athens, he treated its people more harshly because they had scurrilously abused Caecilia from the walls."[1] In another passage, Plutarch specified that the scurrilous abuse against Sulla and Caecilia was from Aristion, the tyrant of Athens.[2] Sulla had her daughter Aemilia marry to Pompey to forge an alliance with him. While Sulla was in Greece, the supporters of Gaius Marius seized Rome and perpetrated violence against those of Sulla. Caecilia thus fled with her and Sulla's children with difficulty, informed Sulla that his villas had been burned and offered to help the Optimates (who supported Sulla) at home.[3] After Sulla celebrated his triumph for his victory in Greece, Caecilia bore him twin children, "[Sulla] named the male child Faustus, and the female Fausta; for the Romans call what is auspicious and joyful, 'faustum.'"[4] While Sulla was devoting a lavish feast in honour of the god Hercules, Caecilia was sick and dying. The priests forbade Sulla 'to go near her or to have his house polluted by her funeral.' Sulla divorced her and had her taken to another house while she was still alive. In this way he respected the law. Sulla transgressed his laws limiting the expenses of funerals and of banquets, organised a sumptuous funeral and drowned his sorrows in drinking parties and extravagant banquets.[5] Plutarch mentioned that another, unnamed son who died shortly before the death of his mother Caecilia appeared to him in a dream.[6] Plutarch clarified this by saying that when Sulla died he left two young children by Caecilia.[7]

- Father: Lambert KING of the Salian Franks at Thérouanne
- Mother: Theudria DE BOULOGNE
- Birth: ABT 448, Thérouanne, Gaul, Roman Empire
- LifeSketch: Wikipedia - Chararic was a Frankish king from sometime before 486 until his death sometime after 507. The primary source for his career is Gregory of Tours. Clovis I had asked Chararic for assistance in his war against Syagrius in 486, but Chararic held back, standing off to the side and awaiting the outcome before choosing whom he would support.[1] When Clovis finally turned against Chararic, he trapped and captured him and his son. They were imprisoned and tonsured; Chararic was ordained a priest and his son a deacon. According to Gregory, when Chararic complained to his son of their dishonour, his son replied with a remark suggesting that they allow their hair to grow long. This conversation was reported to Clovis, who consequently had them killed and annexed their kingdom and treasure.[2] Ian Wood notes it is surprising that Clovis waited over twenty years to deal with his rivals like Chararic, writing, "Clovis ought to have eradicated Frankish opposition earlier in his reign." However, the fact that he had Chararic tonsured clearly points to some time after Clovis' own conversion to Christianity, which Wood dates to soon after Clovis' victory over the Alemanni which was officially done in 496 A.D. Wood concludes, "If Gregory's ordering of events here is right, and there are no means of testing this part of his account, then the last years of Clovis' reign were concerned with the internal power politics of the Franks."[3] Other Frankish kings Clovis removed from power at this time, according to Gregory of Tours, include Ragnachar, who had supported Clovis against Syagrius, and Ragnachar's two brothers.[4] Before he deposed Chararic, Clovis had persuaded Chlodoric of Strassburg to assassinate his father Sigismund the lame, then had Chlodoric killed. After all these murders Gregory tells us that Clovis lamented that he was left with no family, implying that amongst these casualties were close relatives.[5]

- Father: Kimon D`AQUITANIE
- Mother: Brunechilde OF THE VISIGOTHS Queen of Austrasia
- Birth: 570, Kingdom of Austrasia, Gaul, Frankish Empire
- LifeSketch: Foundation for Medieval Genealogy CHILDEBERT (570-[2/28] Mar 596). Gregory of Tours names Childebert as the son of Sigebert and Brunhild, specifying that he was barely five years old when he succeeded his father under the protection of "Duke Gundovald"[261]. "Hildebertus" is named as son of "Sigibertus" in the Regum Merowingorum Genealogia[262]. After the assassination of his father, he was taken to Metz and there recognised 25 Dec 575 as CHILDEBERT II King of the Franks. The Marii Episcopi Aventicensis Chronica names "Childebertus filius ipsius" when recording that he succeeded after his father was killed[263]. He was able to increase his own power in Austrasia largely due to the patronage of his uncle Gontran King of the Franks at Orléans, who adopted him as his successor in 577, recognised him as fit to rule in 584, and confirmed his succession at Andelot in 587[264]. He finally succeeded his uncle in Burgundy in 592, but died "in the fourth year after succeeding" according to Fredegar[265]. Paulus Diaconus states that it was alleged that "Childepertus rex Francorum" was poisoned aged 25 "cum uxore propria"[266]. Betrothed to THEODELINDIS, daughter of GARIBALD Duke of Bavaria & his wife Waldrada of the Lombards. Fredegar records that "Ago rex" married "Grimoaldi et Gundoaldi germanam…Teudelendæ ex genere Francorum", specifying that she had been betrothed to "Childebertus"[267]. m FAILEUBA, daughter of --- (-[596]). King Childebert's queen is named Faileuba in the Treaty of Andelot dated 28 Nov 587[268]. Paulus Diaconus says that it was alleged that "Childepertus rex Francorum" was poisoned aged 25 "cum uxore propria", although no reference to his wife's death has been identified in the Frankish sources[269]. [Mistress ---. As is shown below, one of the sources which reports the birth of Childebert's son Theodebert says that his mother was the king's concubine.] King Childebert II & his [wife/mistress] had one child: a) THEODEBERT [Thibert] ([586]-executed Chalon 612) King Childebert II & his wife had three children: b) THEODERICH (587-Metz 613). c) THEODILA (-after 613). d) child (b and d 589).

He was father of Clovis I, who acquired lordship over all or most Frankish kingdoms, and a significant part of Roman Gaul.

Chlodosind is named as daughter of Queen Brunhilde, and sister of King Childebert, in the Treaty of Andelot dated 28 Nov 587[247]. No proof has been found that the daughter referred to by Paulus was Chlodesindis but this is assumed to be the case. [m secondly (after 594) ---. The name of Recaredo´s second wife is not known. No direct proof has been found of this supposed second marriage. However, the chronology suggests that King Recaredo´s son Suíntila was several years younger than his brother Liuva, which suggests that he was probably born from a later marriage. It is certainly likely that King Recaredo married again after his betrothal in 594, before his death in 601.] King Recaredo and his [second] wife had one child: 2. SUÍNTILA ([after 594]-633). The Chronicon Mundi of Lucas Tudensis records the succession "Era DCLXI imperii Heraclii octavo" of "Suintila filius Reccaredi Regis"[252]. He succeeded in 621 as SUÍNTILA King of the Visigoths.

- Occupation: Chlodulf wurde um 654/55 Bischof von Metz.
- Occupation: évêque de Metz, Metz, France
- Name bedeutet: berühmter Wolf (althochdt.): Name means: famous wolf
- LifeSketch: Chlodulf was the son of Arnulf von Metz. After a secular career as a caretaker at the royal court of Austrasia, he became Bishop of Metz around 655 as the third successor to his father, in honor of his father's holiness, as Paul the deacon wrote. As a bishop he was in close contact with his sister-in-law Gertrud von Nivelles. It was through him that the rich furnishings of St. Stephen's Cathedral were provided. ____________________________________________________ Foundation for Medieval Genealogy- CHLODULF ([610]-8 May [697], bur Metz, basilique de Saint-Arnoul). The Vita Sancti Arnulfi records that Arnulf and his wife had two sons but gives no further details[67]. The Gesta Episcoporum Mettensis names (in order) "duos filios Anschisum et Chlodolfum" as sons of Arnulf "iuventutis suæ tempore ex legitimi matrimonii copula" but does not name their mother[68]. A 9th century genealogy names "Flodolfum et Anschisum" as the children of "domnus Arnulfus"[69]. The Vita Chrodegangi Episcopi Mettensis names "primogenitus…Clodulfus" as one of the two sons of "Arnulfum sanctum"[70]. The Annales Xantenses names "Clodulfus" as son of "Arnulfus" when recording that he became bishop after his father died[71]. Chlodulf’s birth date is estimated from his being born before his father’s appointment as bishop in [613], but bearing in mind his own date of death which is estimated to [697]. Desiderius of Cahors wrote to “Chlodulfo...vir inluster” by letter dated to [630/55][72], which Settipani dates more precisely to [643/47][73]. Domesticus at the royal palace: “…necnon et domesticorum Flodulfi, Ansigisili, Bettelini, Gariberti” consented to a donation to the monastery of Stabulo and Malmédy by King Sigebert III in a charter dated to [648][74]. He was elected Bishop of Metz, dated to 657. "Childericus rex Francorum, Emnehildis et Bilihildis…reginæ…Gundoino duce et Hodone domestico" confirmed the property of the monastery of Stablo and Malmedy on the advice of "Grimoaldo, Fulcoaldo, Adregisilo, Bobone ducibus, Chlodulfo, Ansegisilo, Gariberto domesticis" by charter dated 6 Sep 667[75]. The document is presumably misdated: not only "Grimoaldo" is named ten years after the attested death of the only known Duke Grimoald, but also Chlodulf is not named as bishop although his election to the bishopric of Metz is dated to 657. Sigeberto's Vita Landiberto episcopi Traiectensis names "Pippinus…principes Francorum…Clodulfi Mettensis episcopi…patruus ipsius"[76]. A list of bishops of Metz records "Chlodulfus" as 32nd bishop, holding the position for 40 years and 20 days, and his death "VIII Id Mai"[77]. m ---. The name of Chlodulf’s wife is not known. Two sources suggest that she may have been CHILDA [Hilda], daughter of ---. Firstly, the necrology of Munsterbilsen records on 28 Aug that the body of Saint-Amour was transferred to Munsterbilsen by “co. venerabilis comitisse Hilde uxoris comitis Clodulfi”, and on 19 Sep “co. Clodulfi comitis” who “simul cum Hilda uxore sua” transferred Saint-Amour to Munsterbilsen[78]. Secondly, the Vita S. Amoris Confessoris names “quandam matronam Huldam...viri nobilis Clodolphi coniugem”[79]. Settipani refers to these reports as “la tradition de Los”[80]. Both sources seem to have been compiled long after the bishop’s death, so are presumably of uncertain accuracy. It appears impossible to date the transfer of the saint’s body in order to test whether these entries could refer to Chlodulf Bishop of Metz and his wife. The necrology entry on 19 Sep contradicts the bishop’s date of death recorded elsewhere (see above), although the date could refer to the anniversary of an important donation not to his death (in the text “co.” appears to indicate “commemoratio”, as opposed to “obiit”). The reference to “comitis” is also suprising if the necrology entries relates to the bishop of Metz. In conclusion, the question of the identity of Bishop Chlodulf’s wife remains open. Chlodulf & his wife had [two] children: a) [AUNULF (-before 16 Dec 714). b) [MARTIN

- LifeSketch: The only indication of Chrotrud's family membership arises from the information that Wido, lay abbot of Saint-Wandrille († executed 739), a close relative, propinquus, was Karl Martell's. Wido is mentioned as early as 715 as the brother of Bishop Milo of Trier and Reims and as the son of St. Liutwin. If one translates propinquus as brother-in-law and relates the connection to Chrotrud, she becomes a daughter of Liutwin and a member of the Widonen. This line of thought was published by Anton Halbedel in 1915 and has since been taken up several times, but it is only a h y p o t h e s i s . Rotrude (Chrodtrudis) (or Crotude, Chrotrude, or Ruadtrud; died 724) was the first wife of Charles Martel, Mayor of the Palace and de facto ruler of Francia from 718 to 741. She was the mother of Pepin the Short, King of the Franks, and therefore the grandmother of Charlemagne. Rotrude is believed to be the daughter of Lambert, Count of Hesbaye, although this designation is not without controversy, as discussed below. She is also referred to as Rotrude of Treves. Traditionally, the information available about the family background of Rotrude was the indication that Wido (Guy), Count of Hornbach and Lay Abbot of Fontenelle, was a propinquus of Martel. This kinship term, vague enough, means a close relationship with women: a brother, a cousin by women or a cousin by marriage. Wido is the brother of Milo, Bishop of Trier, and son of Saint Leudwinus, Bishop of Trier. Christian Settipani, in his work on the ancestors of Charlemagne, details an analysis by Anton Halbedel, first issued in 1915, and echoed by historians Joseph Depoin, Maurice Chaume and Szabolcs de Vajay. According to this analysis, the word propinquus implies "brother", so that Wido was Rotrude’s brother. Rotrude has therefore often been identified as the daughter of Saint Leudwinus. However, in Settipani’s Addendum to the Ancestors of Charlemagne,[1] he returns to this problem, reflecting thoughts of the medieval history professor Richard Gerberding, who believed that Rotrude’s background was related directly to the Robertians. He noted that Charles Martel had three wives and that Wido may be a relative of the other two. Settipani concludes that Rotrude was the daughter of Lambert, Count of Hesbaye, and so sister of Robert I, Duke of Neustria. In addition, Rotrude’s sister was named Landrada and was married to Sigramnus, Count of Hesbaye. Landrada and Sigramnus were parents of Saint Chrodegang, Bishop of Metz. Note that Rotrude and Charles had daughter also named Landrade, who is often erroneously identified as the wife of Sigramnus.[2] Rotrude and Charles had five children: Carloman, Mayor of the Palace Pepin the Short, King of the Franks and father of Charlemagne Hiltrude, Duchess Consort of Bavaria, married to Odilo, Duke of Bavaria (perhaps) Landrade (perhaps) Auda of France, married to Thierry IV, Count of Autun. After Rotrude’s death in 724, Charles married Swanachild and had one child Grifo. Charles also had a mistress Ruodhaid with whom he had numerous children. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotrude_of_Hesbaye
