- Father: Pépin II DE VERMANDOIS
- Birth: ABT 847, Bayeux, Calvados, Normandy, France
- LifeSketch: Berengar II (died 896) was the Count of Bayeux and Rennes and Margrave of the Breton March from 886 until his death a decade later. In 874, Brittany's internal politics were thrown into turmoil when King Salomon was murdered by a rival. The resulting surge of Viking attacks made possible by the power vacuum was narrowly held at bay by a hasty Breton-Frankish alliance between Alan the Great of Vannes and Berengar of Rennes. Between 889-90, the Seine Vikings moved into Brittany, hard on the heels of the Loire fleet that Alan and Berengar had successfully driven out (this latter force had broken up into several small flotillas and sailed west). Alain again joined forces with Berengar of Rennes and led two Breton armies into the field. Finding their retreat down the Marne blocked, the Vikings hauled their ships overland to the Vire and besieged Saint-Lo, where the Bretons virtually annihilated the fleet. Berengar's kin became the first Gallo-speaking lords holding residence within Brittany (Rennes and Penthièvre, rather than the Loire Valley-predominant Nantes or Vannes), as a consequence of the Breton nobility being more or less broken under the Norman invasions of the 880s and as a reward for holding his ground against their attacks. Berengar is speculated to have married the daughter of Gurvand, Duke of Brittany, by which relationship he attained the countship of Rennes. This would make him brother-in-law of Judicael, Duke of Brittany. He is thought to be the Berengar of Bayeux whose daughter Poppa was captured in a raid and married to Rollo of Normandy. Various reconstructions make him father, grandfather, or great-grandfather of Judicael Berengar, later Count of Rennes. - Mother: Gefion DE DANES
- Birth: 10, Scandinavia, Europe
- Also known as: Beawa Bedwa der Gothen
- LifeSketch: Beowa, Beaw, Bēow, Beo or Bedwig is a figure in Anglo-Saxon paganism associated with barley and agriculture. The figure is attested in the Anglo-Saxon royal genealogies as they were extended in the age of Alfred, where Beowa is inserted as the son of Scyld and the grandson of Sceafa, in lineages carried back to Adam. Connections have been proposed between the figure of Beowa and the hero Beowulf of the poem of the same name and English folk song figure John Barleycorn. Beoƿ is an Old English word for barley. In the Anglo-Saxon genealogies, Beoƿa is the son or grandson of Sceafa, the Old English word for sheaf. The noun beoƿ has an Old Norse parallel in Bygg, the word for "grain." Related comparisons have been made between the figure of Beoƿ and Byggvir, attested in the Prose Edda as a servant of the god Freyr. Some scholars posit a connection between the mythical figure of Beowa and the legendary Beowulf. As the two characters possess many of the same attributes, it has been suggested that "a god Beowa, whose existence in myth is certain, became confused or blended with Beowulf." Another possibility is that the (first) scribe responsible for the Beowulf text conflated two names. At the beginning of the poem, there is a character called Beowulf, the son of Scyld Scefing, but this character is not the Beowulf who is the protagonist of the poem. Rather than accepting that there are two different characters with this unusual name, many modern editions of the poem replace this name with "Beow". J. R. R. Tolkien, one of the proponents of reading "Beow" here, suggested that the use of "Beowulf" as Scyld Schefing's son was a scribal error for the original "Beow", noting that the two scribes who produced the Beowulf manuscript were "both extremely ignorant of and careless with proper names", and called the occurrence of "Beowulf" in this place in the manuscript "one of the oddest facts in Old English literature" and "one of the reddest and highest red herrings that were ever dragged across a literary trail". Kathleen Herbert draws a link between Beowa and the figure of John Barleycorn of traditional English folksong. Herbert says that Beowa and Barleycorn are one and the same, noting that the folksong details the suffering, death, and resurrection of Barleycorn, yet also celebrates the "reviving effects of drinking his blood." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beowa

- Father: John Hyrcanus I THASSI
- Mother: Maccabaeus ben HASMONEAN
- Birth: 127 BC, Judea
- Also known as: Alexander ינאי אלכסנדר Yannai
- LifeSketch: Alexander Jannaeus was the third son of John Hyrcanus by his second wife. When Aristobulus I, Hyrcanus' son by his first wife, became king, he deemed it necessary for his own security to imprison his half-brother. Aristobulus died after a reign of one year. Upon his death, his widow, Salome Alexandra had Alexander and his brothers released from prison. One of these brothers is said to have unsuccessfully sought the throne. Alexander, as the oldest living brother, had the right not only to the throne, but also to Salome, the widow of his deceased brother, who had died childless; and, although she was thirteen years older than him, he married her in accordance with Jewish law. By her he had two sons: the eldest, Hyrcanus II, became high-priest in 62 BCE; and Aristobulus II, who was high-priest from 66 - 62 BCE and started a bloody civil war with his brother, ending in his capture by Pompey the Great. Like his brother, he was an avid supporter of the aristocratic priestly faction known as the Sadducees. His wife Salome on the other hand, came from a pharisaic family (her brother was Simeon ben Shetach, a famous Pharisee leader) and was more sympathetic to their cause and protected them throughout his turbulent reign. Like his father, Alexander also served as the high priest. This raised the ire of the religious authorities who insisted that these two offices should not be combined. According to the Talmud, Yannai was a questionable desecrated priest (rumour had it that his mother was captured in Modiin and violated) and, in the opinion of the Pharisees, was not allowed to serve in the temple. This infuriated the king and he sided with the Sadducees who defended him. This incident led the king to turn against the Pharisees and he persecute them until his death. - LifeSketch: From Wikipedia Aristobulus III (55 BC –36 BC) was the last scion of the Hasmonean royal house, brother of Herod the Great's wife Mariamne, and grandson of Hyrcanus II and Aristobulus II. He was a favourite of the people on account of his noble descent and handsome presence, and thus became an object of fear to Herod, who at first sought to ignore him entirely by debarring him from the high priesthood. But his mother Alexandra, through intercession with Cleopatra and Mark Antony, compelled Herod to remove Ananelus from the office of High Priest and appoint Aristobulus instead. To secure himself against danger from Aristobulus, Herod instituted a system of espionage against him and his mother. This surveillance proved so onerous that they sought to gain their freedom by taking refuge with Cleopatra. As told by the Roman Jewish historian Josephus, their plans were betrayed and the disclosure had the effect of greatly increasing Herod's suspicions against his brother-in-law. As Herod dared not resort to open violence, he caused him to be drowned while he was bathing in a pool in Jericho during a banquet organized by Aristobulus' mother.

- Father: Alexander Jannaeus BEN
- Mother: Salomé ALEXANDRA HASMONEUS
- Birth: 103 BC, Israyel
- Also known as: Yohannan Hyrcanus II
- Title Of Nobility: 52nd High Priest of Judaea
- LifeSketch: John Hyrcanus II (hərˈkeɪnəs, יוחנן הורקנוס, Yohanan Hurqanos) (died 30 BCE), a member of the Hasmonean dynasty, was for a long time the Jewish High Priest in the 1st century BCE. He was also briefly King of Judea 67–66 BCE and then the ethnarch (ruler) of Judea, probably over the period 47–40 BCE. Hyrcanus was the eldest son of Alexander Jannaeus, King and High Priest, and Alexandra Salome. After the death of Alexander in 76 BCE, his widow succeeded to the rule of Judea and installed her elder son Hyrcanus as High Priest. When Salome died in 67 BCE, she named John Hyrcanus II as her successor as ruler of Judea as well, but soon he and his younger brother, Aristobulus II, dissented over the right to the throne. Hyrcanus had scarcely reigned three months when Aristobulus II rose in rebellion. Hyrcanus advanced against him at the head of his mercenaries and his followers. The brothers met in a battle near Jericho with many of Hyrcanus' soldiers going over to Aristobulus II, and thereby gave the latter the victory. Hyrcanus took refuge in the citadel of Jerusalem; but the capture of the Temple by Aristobulus II compelled Hyrcanus to surrender. A peace was then concluded in which Hyrcanus was to renounce the throne and the office of high priest, but was to enjoy the revenues of the latter office. This agreement did not last. Hyrcanus feared that Aristobulus was planning his death. Such fears were furthered by Hyrcanus' adviser, Antipater the Idumean. According to Josephus, Antipater sought to control Judea by putting the weak Hyrcanus back onto the throne. Hyrcanus took refuge with Aretas III, King of the Nabataeans, who had been bribed by Antipater into supporting Hyrcanus' cause through the promise of returning Arabian towns taken by the Hasmoneans. The Nabataeans advanced toward Jerusalem with an army of 50,000, took the city and besieged the Temple where Aristobulus had taken refuge for several months. During the siege, Josephus states that the adherents of Hyrcanus stoned the pious Onias (Honi ha'Me'agel, also Khoni or Choni ha-Me'agel), who had refused to pray for the demise of their opponents, and further angered the priests who were fighting along with Aristobulus by selling them cattle for the paschal sacrifice for the enormous price of one thousand drachmae and then refused to deliver the promised animals for the sacrifice.(Antiquities of the Jews Book 14, 2:2) During the Roman civil war, the Roman general Pompey defeated armies of the kingdoms of Pontus and the Seleucids. He sent his deputy Marcus Aemilius Scaurus to take possession of Seleucid Syria. As the Hasmoneans were allies of the Romans, both brothers appealed to Scaurus, each endeavouring through gifts and promises to win him over to his side. Scaurus, moved by a gift of 400 talents, decided in favour of Aristobulus and ordered Aretas to withdraw his army. During his retreat, the Nabateans suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Aristobulus. Scaurus returned to Damascus. When Pompey arrived in Syria in 63 BCE, both brothers and a third party that desired the removal of the entire dynasty (according to some sources, these may have been the representatives of the Pharisees), sent their delegates to Pompey, who delayed making a decision. He favoured Hyrcanus over Aristobulus, deeming the elder, weaker brother a more reliable ally of the Roman Empire. Aristobulus, suspicious of Pompey's intentions, entrenched himself in the fortress of Alexandrium, but when the Roman army approached Judea, he surrendered and undertook to deliver Jerusalem over to them. However, since many of his followers were unwilling to open the gates, the Romans besieged and captured the city by force, badly damaging city and the temple. Aristobulus was taken to Rome a prisoner and Hyrcanus restored as high priest in Jerusalem. By around 63 BCE, Hyrcanus had been restored to his position as High Priest but not to the Kingship. Political authority rested with the Romans whose interests were represented by Antipater, who primarily promoted the interests of his own house. In 47 BCE, Julius Caesar restored some political authority to Hyrcanus by appointing him ethnarch. This however had little practical effect, since Hyrcanus yielded to Antipater in everything. In 40 BCE, Aristobulus' son Antigonus Mattathias allied himself with the Parthians and was proclaimed King and High Priest. Hyrcanus was seized and his ears mutilated (according to Josephus, Antigonus bit his uncle's ears off) to make him permanently ineligible for the priesthood. Then Hyrcanus was taken by the Parthians into captivity in Babylonia, where he lived for four years amid the Babylonian Jews, who paid him every mark of respect. In 36 BCE, Herod I, who had vanquished Antigonus with Roman help and feared that Hyrcanus might persuade the Parthians to help him regain the throne, invited the former High Priest to return to Jerusalem. Hyrcanus accepted and Herod received him with every mark of respect, assigning to him the first place at his table and the presidency of the state council. However, in 30 BCE Herod charged Hyrcanus with plotting with the Nabateans and put him to death. Josephus states that Hyrcanus was 80 years old at the time of his death.

- Birth: 22 BC
- LifeSketch: Ananus ben Ananus (Hebrew: חנן בן חנן Hanan ben Hanan Greek: Ἀνάνου Ἄνανος "Ananos son of Ananos" var: Ananias, Latin: Anani Ananus or Ananus filius Anani), d. 68 CE, was a Herodian-era High Priest of Israel in Jerusalem, Iudaea Province. He was the High Priest who ordered the execution by stoning of James the brother of Jesus (James the Just), according to the surviving manuscripts of The Antiquities of the Jews. However, popular opinion against Hanan due to this act led the recently appointed Roman governor Lucceius Albinus to depose the high priest, after only three months. Ananus was succeeded by Jesus ben Damneus, who was himself deposed before the end of the year. Ananus was one of the main leaders of the Great Revolt of Judea, which erupted in 66 CE. He was appointed as one of the heads of the Judean provisional government together with Joseph ben Gurion in late 66. In 68, Ananus was killed during the inter-rebel civil war in Jerusalem. Josephus in The Jewish War considered Ananus "unique in his love for liberty and an enthusiast for democracy" and as an "effective speaker, whose words carried weight with the people". Josephus's account of the death of James as follows: Ananus, who, as we have told you already, took the high priesthood, was a bold man in his temper, and very insolent; he was also of the sect of the Sadducees, who are very rigid in judging offenders, above all the rest of the Jews, as we have already observed; when, therefore, Ananus was of this disposition, he thought he had now a proper opportunity [to exercise his authority]. Festus was now dead, and Albinus was but upon the road; so he assembled the Sanhedrin of judges, and brought before them the brother of Jesus, who was called Christ, whose name was James, and some of his companions; and when he had formed an accusation against them as breakers of the law, he delivered them to be stoned: but as for those who seemed the most equitable of the citizens, and such as were the most uneasy at the breach of the laws, they disliked what was done; they also sent to the King [Agrippa], desiring him to send to Ananus that he should act so no more, for what he had already done was not to be justified; nay, some of them went also to meet Albinus, as he was upon his journey from Alexandria, and informed him that it was not lawful for Ananus to assemble a Sanhedrin without his consent. Whereupon Albinus complied with what they said, and wrote in anger to Ananus, and threatened that he would bring him to punishment for what he had done; on which King Agrippa took the high priesthood from him, when he had only ruled three months, and made Jesus, the son of Damneus, high priest. After Ananus was deposed as high priest, he continued to exercise leadership. "Under the guidance of former high priest Ananus ben Ananus, they (the Sanhedrin) exhorted the populace for support against the radical priestly Zealots, as these 'persuaded those who officiated in the Temple sacrifices to accept no gift or services from a foreigner' (BJ II, 409-414)." Later, he marshaled recruits to fight the Zealots, resulting in the Zealot Temple Siege. While commanding the Jews during the siege, Ananus was killed by the Idumeans.

- LifeSketch: Theophilus was the High Priest in the Second Temple in Jerusalem from 37 to 41 CE according to Josephus's Antiquities of the Jews. He was a member of one of the wealthiest and most influential Jewish families in Iudaea Province during the 1st century. A growing but still uncommon belief points to this person as the person to whom the Gospel of Luke is addressed, but Theophilus is a common enough name that there are many other possibilities for the addressee of Luke's Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles. Theophilus was the son of Ananus (Hebrew: חנן) and the brother of Eleazar, Jonathan, Matthias and Ananus, all of whom served as High Priests. He was also the brother-in-law of Joseph Caiaphas, the High Priest before whom Jesus of Nazareth appeared. In addition, his son Matthias served as the next to the last High Priest before the destruction of the Temple by the Romans. Archeological evidence confirming the existence of Theophilus, as an ossuary has been discovered bearing the inscription, "Yehoḥanah (Johanna) daughter of Yehoḥanan (Jonathan) son of Thefilus (Theophilus) the High Priest". The details of this ossuary have been published in the Israel Exploration Journal. Therefore, Theophilus had at least one other son named Jonathan, father to Johanna. The name Johanna appears twice in the New Testament in the Gospel of Luke. First as one of women healed by Jesus who travels with Jesus and the disciples to Jerusalem. Her second appearance also in the Gospel of Luke is on Easter Sunday when she and other women visits the empty tomb. It is uncertain, however, whether the Johanna in the Gospel of Luke is the same Johanna as the one mentioned on the ossuary. According to Richard Bauckham, Johanna was "the fifth most popular woman's name in Jewish Palestine," and the Johanna of the Gospel of Luke was likely from Galilee, not from Jerusalem.

Jonathan was among those who plotted to have Judas killed if he succeeded in murdering Yeshua (Y:21:4-25). Jonathan was also among the chief priests responsible for plotting the murder of Lazarus (Y:41:29-30), and contributing to events leading to Yeshua’s death. Other chief priests who plotted against Yeshua include Joseph Caiaphas, Simon Ben Kambith, Ismael Ben Phali, and Eleazar Ben Haman (Y:3:28; Y:21:4). "And there gathered to hear him the High Priest, Joseph Caiaphas; and with him also were Ananus Ben Seth his father-in-law, Ismael Ben Phali, Eleazar Ben Haman, Simon Ben Kambith, and Jonathan Ben Ananus." Yeshua 21:4 _________________________________________________ JONATHAN B. ANAN: By: Richard Gottheil, Samuel Krauss Son of the high priest Anan; was appointed by Vitellius high priest in the place of Joseph Caiaphas, at the time of the Passover in the year 36. For reasons unknown he was deposed by Vitellius when the latter was in Jerusalem the second time, and his brother Theophilus was appointed in his place (ib. 5, § 3). When King Agrippa I deposed Simon Cantheras (c. 43) he wished to appoint Jonathan again as high priest; but the latter refused the office, saying he was satisfied to have once worn the high-priestly garments. He recommended his brother Matthias for the office; and the latter was appointed (ib. xix. 6, § 4). During the sanguinary conflict between the Judeans and the Samaritans, under the procurator Cumanus, Jonathan together with several nobles represented the cause of the Judeans before the Syrian legate at Tyre, and he also went in the same capacity to the emperor Claudius at Rome. He brought about the appointment of Felix as procurator in the year 52 (Josephus, "B. J." ii. 12, §§ 5, 6; comp. "Ant." xx. 8, § 5). Jonathan often exhorted Felix to mend his ways, in order that the people might not reproach him (Jonathan) for having brought the procurator into the country. As Jonathan was hated by the Sicarii also, this just and peaceable man was treacherously assassinated at the instigation of Felix ("B. J." ii. 13, § 3; "Ant." xx. 8, § 5).

- LifeSketch: From Wikipedia Phasael (died 40 BC; Hebrew: פַצָאֵל, Fatza'el; Latin: Phasaelus; from Greek: Φασάηλος, Phasaelos), was a prince from the Herodian Dynasty of Judea. Origins and early career Phasael was born in the Hasmonean Kingdom to a Jewish aristocratic family of Edomite descent. His father, Antipater the Idumaean, was the close advisor of the Hasmonean king Hyrcanus II, and his mother Cypros was a Nabatean princess. Phasael was the elder brother of Herod. Both Phasael and Herod began their careers under their father, Antipater, who was appointed procurator of Judea for the Roman Republic by Julius Caesar. Antipater appointed Phasael to be governor of Jerusalem, and Herod governor of Galilee.[1] When Phasael's brother Herod was summoned to be tried by the Sanhedrin he meant to come to Jerusalem with an army and make war, however Antipater and Phasael managed to convince him to be satisfied with making threats of force. While Mark Antony was in Bithynia about 41 BC, accusations were brought before him against the two brothers, who were objects of hatred to many Jews, but the shrewd Herod succeeded in obtaining the dismissal of the charges.[2] It was impossible, however, for the Sanhedrin to rest content with the administrations of Herod and Phasael; and charges were again brought against them before Antony at Antioch. Once more the accusations proved to be fruitless, for Antony was indebted to Antipater, while even the weak Hyrcanus II pleaded for them. This led Antony to appoint the pair tetrarchs.[3] Revolt of Antigonus and Phasael's downfall Meanwhile, Antigonus the Hasmonean endeavored to seize the Jewish throne; and in Jerusalem there were frequent conflicts between his retainers and those of the two brothers, which were especially perilous on the Jewish Feast of Shavuot. Phasael defended the walls, and Herod the palace, thus routing their antagonists, whereupon Antigonus invoked the aid of the Parthian Empire. In spite of Herod's warning, Phasael allowed himself to be lured with Hyrcanus to the camp of the Parthian leader Barzapharnes under the pretext of peace talks. Both Hyrcanus and Phasael were imprisoned.[4] They were then handed over to Antigonus, who caused Hyrcanus to be mutilated, a disgrace which Phasael escaped by dashing out his own brains, having the satisfaction of knowing before he died that his brother Herod had escaped from Jerusalem and was safe.[5] Legacy Josephus speaks of Phasael as a brave and noble man. His son, who likewise bore the name Phasael, and seems to have been posthumous, married Herod's daughter Salampsio, by whom he had five children.[6] The son of Herod by Pallas was called Phasael by Herod, who likewise honored his brother's memory by naming a city northeast of Jericho "Phasaelis," and a tower of his palace at Jerusalem "Phasaelus."

- LifeSketch: From Wikipedia Pheroras (Greek: Φερώρας; c. 68 BC–c. 5 BC), probably born in Marissa (Idumea), was the youngest son of Antipater I and his wife Cypros and younger brother of Herod the Great. His first marriage was to a sister of Mariamne I (wife of Herod) which marriage was allegedly arranged by Herod. When this wife died, Herod betrothed him to his eldest daughter by Mariamne I, Salampsio, but because of an affection for a "slave girl", by whose "charms" he was "overcome", he rejected the marriage. Some time later Herod asked him to marry Salampsio's younger sister Cypros, and at first Pheroras agreed, but later he again refused and stayed married to his wife, who was very unpopular with Herod, and was involved in several plots against him. Pheroras was a close comrade-in-arms of his brother Herod, on whose commission he restored the fortress of Alexandreum to the north of Jericho. ___________________________________________________ Pheroras was Herod's brother. Now, Pheroras, his wife, her mother, and her sister - all four of them - hated Herod and wanted to kill him. So did Antipater, and so did Antipater's mother Doris, one of Herod's nine wives! In public, these people all acted like they hated one another - to throw off suspicion - but they were meeting and plotting together in secret. Herod found out about Pheroras and the women, but didn't suspect Antipater. He told Antipater and Doris not to see Pheroras or the other women. (Herod thought Antipater would be okay, if he was safe from the influence of his uncle!) But while Herod was deciding what to do with Pheroras and his wife, Antipater had one last secret meeting with his old uncle. In that meeting, Pheroras promised Antipater he would kill Herod while Antipater was away. Right after that meeting, Antipater left for Antioch & Rome. A short time later, the King banished his own brother, Pheroras, who died soon after! http://www.billheroman.com/2006/10/year-by-year-6-bc.html

Their grandfather was Alexander Jannaeus, the second eldest son of John Hyrcanus. Mariamne, the daughter of Alexander and Alexandra, was Herod the Great's second wife and Hasmonean queen of the Jewish kingdom. Alexander was taken prisoner, with his father and his brother Antigonus, by the Roman general Pompey, on the capture of Jerusalem in 63 BC, but escaped his captors as they were being conveyed to Rome. In 57 BC he appeared in Judaea, raised an army of 10,000 infantry and 1500 cavalry, and fortified Alexandrium and other strong posts. Alexander's uncle Hyrcanus (with whom Alexander's father Aristobulus had clashed) applied for aid to Aulus Gabinius, the Roman proconsul of Syria, who brought a large army against Alexander, and sent one of his cavalry commanders, the young Mark Antony in his first military command, with a body of troops in advance. In a decisive battle near Jerusalem, Alexander was soundly defeated, and took refuge in the fortress of Alexandrium. Through the mediation of his mother, he was permitted to depart, on condition of surrendering all the fortresses still in his power. In the following year, during the expedition of Gabinius into Egypt, Alexander again incited the Jews to revolt, and collected an army. He massacred all the Romans who fell in his way and besieged the rest, who had taken refuge on Mount Gerizim. After rejecting the terms of peace which were offered to him by Gabinius, he was defeated near Mount Tabor with the loss of 10,000 men. The spirit of his adherents, however, was not entirely crushed, for in 53, on the death of Marcus Licinius Crassus, he again collected some forces, but was compelled to come to terms by Cassius in 52. Three years later, in 49 BC, Caesar's Civil War broke out, and Julius Caesar set Alexander's father Aristobulus II free, and sent him to Judaea to further his interests there. He was poisoned on the journey, and Alexander, who was preparing to support him, was seized at the command of Pompey, and beheaded at Antioch.

- LifeSketch: The Gospel of Matthew and Gospel of Luke present an apparent problem by giving two genealogies for Jesus. (Matthew 1:7-16, Luke 3:23-31). Julius Africanus (about 160-about 240) attributed the difference to the custom of levirate marrige, under which a man was obliged to marry his brother's widow if the brother had died without children. According to Julius Africanius, the apparent problem can be explained in two stages. First, a woman named Estha married Matthan, a descendant of David through Solomon, and became the mother of Jacob. After Mathan's death she married Mathat, a descendant of David through Nathan, and became the mother of Heli. Jacob and Heli were, therefore, uterine brothers. Secondly, Heli married, but died without offspring. His widow, therefore, became the levirate wife of Jacob, and gave birth to Joseph, who was the carnal son of Jacob, but the legal son of Heli, thus combining in his person two lineages of David's descendants. This was the solution adopted by Saint Augustine. David Hughes in Davidic Dynasty gives the name Hazibah to the wife of Matthan, but she seems to be a modern invention. https://www.geni.com/people/Esthra-Estha/6000000004089124881?through=6000000007456718938 ________________________________________________ Heli (Miriam´s father) was the son of the future Maccabee Queen Alexandra II, who at this time was known by her Jewish name, Esther of Jerusalem. Heli, the shortened nickname for Helios (“The Sun”), was a descendant of both the Maccabee Kings of Judea and a prince of the House of David, for his father was Matthan ben Levi, a Davidian Prince who was first married in his youth to the vivacious royal princess, Elizabeth of Jerusalem.

Jacob BEN HEZEKIAH
- Father: Hezekiah 'the Zealot' BEN MATTHAN
- Birth: BET 51 BC AND 31 BC, Gamala, Gaulonitis, Roman Empire
- Also known as: Judas the Gaulonite of Gamala
- Also known as: Judas of Galilee
- LifeSketch: Judas ben Hezekiah and the Zealots Born in 31 BCE, Judas is the son of Prince Hezekiah, nephew of Jacob ben Matthan, and thus a cousin of Joseph of the Bible. Judas and Joseph of the Bible were raised pretty much as brothers and were very close. However, note that this Joseph and our hero Yosef are not the same person. Yosef of Arimathea will know of Joseph and his family circumstances given his own cousin’s (Joshua of Arimathea's) half brother, Heli. Heli was married to Hanna before his own execution by Herod. After the execution of his brother Jacob, Hezekiah opened up his home to his nieces and nephews (Joseph of the Bible, Ptomes, Cleopas), along with the youngest daughter of the then High Priest, Hanna bat Yehoshua III, who is the mother of Miriam. Judas the Zealot is a roughneck. He is also very devout. Things have gotten so bad under Herod’s reign that he feels something has to be done to stop the corruption and demise of the Jewish nation. He, along with his father and uncle, have been an active guerilla leaders of a band of zealots residing in Galilee. In 12 BCE, Judas also becomes the personal guard for the exiled Crown Prince of Ireland. Yosef deliberately got himself ‘caught’ by Judas’ zealot band because he wanted to hire Judas and his men as protection for the city of Nazara which he was building within the borders of Galilee. In return, Yosef offered the Zealots gold, supplies, and an education for all of Judas’ men at the new school he was to build within Nazara. Judas is impressed with the man and his actions, and the two have been pretty much inseparable since. Judas' father, Hezekiah, was named after one of the original zealot martyrs, killed in 47BCE whilst fighting Antipater, Herod’s father, for the rights of Jews to rule themselves. Hezekiah ben Matthan, like his namesake, Hezekiah ben Gurion, firmly believed it was not part of God’s covenant that Jews be destined to be slaves and pawns under the tyrannical rule of King Herod. They fought for the freedom of the Jews. Their ideology was not for political revolution, it was bound by the higher calling to preserve the integrity of Jewish life as taught by the Torah. After King Aristobulus II had been poisoned by Pompey’s men, Hezekiah ben Gurion had gathered the remnants of the king’s army who were in the mountains of Galilee and carried on a very successful guerilla war against both the Romans and the Syrians. They were waiting for the opportunity to stage a full uprising against Rome. The pious men of Israel looked at Hezekiah as the avenger of their honor and liberty. Unfortunately Antipater, who was the governor of Judaea at the time, and his sons Herod (the eventual ruler of Galilee) and Joseph did not see this band as patriots at all. They beheaded Hezekiah and many of his followers, making them martyrs for Israel and in particular the Zealot sect. Not all the Israelites were against interactions with the Gentiles or even the idea of foreign rule. The Sadducees, who came to believe there was no life after death, and even some Pharisees elite did not believe it was against God’s law to accept foreign rulers. This was for a couple of reasons. First, the elite knew quite well that both the Torah, which was ‘mysteriously found’ by Josiah in the late 7th century BCE (around 620ish BCE), and the Talmud which was brought back from Babylon after the Exile, were ‘clever interpretations of previous oral traditions’ compiled by scribes under the direct influence of foreign powers who wanted to insert a few moral lessons into the Jewish tradition. Some of the passages of these ‘scriptures’ were complete reprints of ancient Zoroastrianism text taken out of the Avesta. Since these holy scriptures were not then the ‘word of God’, they felt it was not necessary to execute the words explicitly. Secondly, with regard to ‘foreign rulers’, many elite Jews – and in particularly the priests – became very wealthy as a result of having foreigners rule. Typically the foreign leaders used the priests’ unique status over the common people to their advantage and enacted programs whereby these priests were able to keep a percentage of the taxes collected from its citizens. So it didn’t take long for priests to recognize the distinctive advantage of having a foreign ruler in charge; they made money. Politics eventually ruled the situation and as priests became wealthier, they were less inclined to ‘fight’ this particular issue of foreigners in charge. This is one of the primary reasons that the Zealots began to persecute the priests as well as the foreign rulers of Rome. The corrupt nature of many of the priests did not sit well with the Zealots, and they struck hard against them. Zealots were pretty much everywhere in 1st century Israel, but their primary territory was in Galilee. There in the mountains, they were able to build secure fortresses in which they hid and fought their enemies. Jacob and Hezekiah had another brother named Judas the Galilean who was also an active Zealot known for his role in leading a Jewish revolt in 6 CE against Herod’s new taxing legislation. Judas the Galilean dies in this skirmish in 6 CE. There are a number of insurrections planned and carried out in late 1st century BC as well as the early 1st century CE. Some of these will be under the direct leadership of either Judas the Zealot, his father Hezekiah, or his uncle Judas the Galilean. Yosef Cu Cuileann and Joseph of the Bible will participate in some of these encounters. Judas honestly believes he has placed his allegiance with the true heir to the throne of Israel, Yosef of Arimathea. https://www.rebejames.com/judas-the-zealot __________________________________________________ Grätz ("Gesch." iii. 251) and Schürer ("Gesch." i. 486) identify Judas the Galilean with Judas, son of Hezekiah the Zealot, who, according to Josephus ("Ant." xvii. 10, § 5; "B. J." ii. 4, § 1), led a revolt in the time of Quintilius Varus. He took possession of the arsenal of Sepphoris, armed hisfollowers, who were in great numbers, and soon became the terror of the Romans.

But which one? Noah's Descendants In his translation of Genesis, E. A. Speiser notes that the descendants of Noah listed in Genesis 10:1-32 are often simply Hebrew names for various ethnic groups and are often grammatically plural (65, 71). Note also the reference to "nations" at 10:5 and 10:32. Here are some modern ideas on which nations the sons of Noah represent: 1. Sons of Japeth (Iapetos?): races in Asia Minor, the Aegean sea (Greeks), and beyond. Javan = Yawan in Hebrew, i.e., "Ionians" Gomer = Gimmirray in Akkadian; "Cimmerians" in Greek Ashkenaz = Ashguza in Akkadian "Scythians" Elishah = Alashiya in Akkadian "Cyprus" Kittim is the Greek Kition, modern Larnaka in Cyprus. 2. Sons of Ham: races located around Egypt. Cush, either Ethiopia or as in Genesis 2:13 possibly the land of the Kassites, in Mesopotamia. Put, is Punt, or Libya. Canaan, Canaanites, later called Phoenicians. Note that Canaan's first-born son at 10:15 is Sidon, a city in Phoenicia (and modern day Lebanon). Other cities and lands: Babel = Babylon; Erech = Uruk; Shinar = Sumer. Ninevah and Calah are both Assyrian cities, the latter built in the thirteenth centry B.C. Caphtorim, possibly inhabitants of Crete. Jebusites, Hurrians who ruled Jerusalem around 1400 B.C. 3. Sons of Shem: Semites, or people speaking Semitic languages. However, Semitic-speaking enemies of the Hebrews (Canaanite and Mesopotamian peoples) are classed under the "cursed" race of Ham. Eber = eponymous ancestor of the Hebrews Elam = Elamites, non-Semitic speakers, but "neighbor and traditional rival of Mesopotamian states" ( Aram = eponymous ancestor of the Aramaens, the most widespread of all Semitic groups. Aramaic later replaced Hebrew as the commonly spoken language of Israel. This is the language Jesus spoke. Joktan's sons are "various Arabian tribes." Compare this list of Noah's descendants with Deucalion's son and grandsons: Hellen, ancestor of the Hellenes, or Greeks. (The Greeks, both ancient and modern, call their country Hellas.) Hellen's sons were Dorus (Dorians), Aeolus (Aeolians), and Xuthus. Xuthus' sons were Ion (Ionians) and Achaeus (Achaeans), thus accounting for the four major divisions of Greek peoples. Chronology: Hebrew texts sung and written J text: c. 950 B.C. (Two kingdoms split 922 BC) E text: 900-750 B.C. (Northern Israel conquered 722 B.C.) P text: 586 B.C. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE DESCENDANTS OF NOAH After the Flood the earth was re-peopled by the descendants of Noah, "the sons of Japheth" (Gen. 10:2), "the sons of Ham" (6), and "the sons of Shem" It is important to notice that modern ethnological science, reasoning from a careful analysis of facts, has arrived at the conclusion that there is a three-fold division of the human family, corresponding in a remarkable way with the great ethnological chapter of the book of Genesis . The three great races thus distinguished are called the Semitic, Aryan, and Turanian (Allophylian). "Setting aside the cases where the ethnic names employed are of doubtful application, it cannot reasonably be questioned that the author [of Gen. 10] has in his account of the sons of Japheth classed together the Cymry or Celts (Gomer), the Medes (Madai), and the Ionians or Greeks (Javan), thereby anticipating what has become known in modern times as the 'Indo-European Theory,' or the essential unity of the Aryan (Asiatic) race with the principal races of Europe, indicated by the Celts and the Ionians. Nor can it be doubted that he has thrown together under the one head of 'children of Shem' the Assyrians (Asshur), the Syrians (Aram), the Hebrews (Eber), and the Joktanian Arabs (Joktan), four of the principal races which modern ethnology recognizes under the heading of 'Semitic.' Again, under the heading of 'sons of Ham,' the author has arranged 'Cush', i.e., the Ethiopians; 'Mizraim,' the people of Egypt; 'Sheba and Dedan,' or certain of the Southern Arabs; and 'Nimrod,' or the ancient people of Babylon, four races between which the latest linguistic researches have established a close affinity" Father: NOE (L) (BJP) (NOTE) "PROPHET" OR NOAH b: in 2944-2943 BC Mother: NAAMA OR NAAMAH (NOTES) COBA (L) EMZARAH b: in ABT 2900 BC Marriage 1 SESKEF SEAKEF SCEAF OR ODIN (NOTES) (L) TROJANS b: in 535 BC Children BEDWIG OR BEDWEG (NOTES) (L) TROJANS b: in 500 BC

Compare this list of Noah's descendants with Deucalion's son and grandsons: Hellen, ancestor of the Hellenes, or Greeks.

- LifeSketch: Joseph was born before April 21BC, but not to much earlier, as he was age 20 or older at time Jesus was born 6 Apr 1BC because he paid "To be taxed..." his temple tax. https://www.gotquestions.org/temple-tax.html He was probably born in Nazareth, as Luke 2:41,44 shows a family tradition of going back and froth from Nazareth to Jerusalem for Passover. He was living in Nazareth when he espoused Mary, probably not any earlier then summer 2BC, as most espousal's last about a year. Due to the usual circumstance of Mary's conception of Jesus, the espousal period was extend until Mary gave birth to Jesus. This would have helped ensure he "...knew her not till....". He was in Nazareth when he was informed in a dream June 2BC to keep Mary. Joseph was also living in Nazareth when the 5 Feb 2BC decree was being conducted "in those days" (of John's birth) there in the Fall of 2BC where he was registered. Luke 2:3,39 Shortly (6 months) after this, Joseph ALSO (Luke 2:4) went to Bethlehem to attended Passover with the rest of the family (Luke 2:41,44) Passover attracts 2.7 million attendees. Crowding the Inns. It's also the lambing season with shepherds out all night watching their flocks. Joseph also paid/registered his temple tax. Jesus was born 6 April 1BC. Probably assisted by mid-wife(s) in their company. After Jesus's birth, circumcision, Mary's purification and Jesus's presentation to the Lord in the temple, they returned to their own city of Nazareth after 16 May 1BC Sometime after Jesus's birth, Joseph and Mary were finally married. Probably after their 40 day stay in Bethlehem, shortly after their return to Nazareth. About 25 Dec 1BC, wise men appear at Joseph's house in Nazareth and worshipped and gifted Jesus. That night, Joseph was warned by an angel in a dream to flee to Egypt. They depart that very night. King Herod https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/M4QK-LW1 Later in Egypt, Joseph received another visit in dream and was instructed to return home to Nazareth Galilee. Apparently he was aware of the atrocities taking place under the new King Archelaus (G747-9BC) re the 3,000 killed on temple grounds cancelling the 27 Mar 1AD Passover, so he avoided Judea on his way back to Nazareth. Joseph and Mary had 4 sons named in scripture, and possible 3 daughters. Joseph and extended family attended Passover every year, in 12 AD, Jesus stayed behind and after a days journey, Joseph and Mary leaving children behind with family company, rushed back to Jerusalem to locate their lost Jesus. After 3 days, they found him and returned to Nazareth. Joseph is believed to have died between 12AD and 29 AD, as he is never mentioned again in scripture. Many place his death about 18AD. That Mary was a widow with 8 children, is reason Jesus had so much to say about widows and fatherless. It appears as Joseph's eldest (step) son, that Jesus was the patriarch of the family. And that he turned the reins over to his brother James (GHSC-G8T) at the cross.

- LifeSketch: Salome was a follower of Jesus who appears briefly in the canonical gospels and in apocryphal writings. She is named by Mark as present at the crucifixion and as one of the women who found Jesus's tomb empty. Interpretation has further identified her with other women who are mentioned but not named in the canonical gospels. In particular, she is often identified as the wife of Zebedee, the mother of James and John, two of the Twelve apostles. In medieval tradition Salome (as Mary Salome) was counted as one of the Three Marys who were daughters of Saint Anne, so making her the sister or half-sister of Mary, mother of Jesus. In Mark 15:40-41, Salome is named as one of the women present at the crucifixion who also ministered to Jesus: "There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses; and Salome who also followed Him and ministered to Him when he was in Galilee. And many other women who followed Him to Jerusalem."(15:40-41, King James Version) The parallel passage of Matthew 27:56 reads thus: "Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's children." The Catholic Encyclopedia (1913) concludes that the Salome of Mark 15:40 is probably identical with the mother of the sons of Zebedee in Matthew; the latter is also mentioned in Matthew 20:20, in which she petitions Jesus to let her sons sit with him in Paradise In John, three, or perhaps four, women are mentioned at the crucifixion; this time they are named as Jesus' "mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene." (John 19:25 KJV) A common interpretation identifies Salome as the sister of Jesus' mother, thus making her Jesus' aunt. Traditional interpretations associate Mary the wife of Cleophas (the third woman in the Gospel of John) with Mary the mother of James son of Alphaeus (the third woman in the Gospel of Matthew). In the Gospel of Mark, Salome is among the women who went to Jesus' tomb to anoint his body with spices. "And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him." (Mark 16:1 KJV) They discovered that the stone had been rolled away, and a young man in white then told them that Jesus had risen, and told them to tell Jesus' disciples that he would meet them in Galilee. In Matthew 28:1, two women are mentioned in the parallel passage: Mary Magdalene and the "other Mary" – identified previously in Matthew 27:56 as Mary the mother of James and Joses. The canonical gospels never go so far as to label Salome a "disciple" ("pupil" mathētēs), and so mainstream Christian writers usually describe her as a "follower" of Jesus per references to the women who "followed" and "ministered" to Jesus (Mark 15:41). However, feminist critiques have argued that the mainstream tradition consistently underplays the significance of Jesus's female supporters. _________________________________________________ Salome (which means peace) was the wife of Zebedee and mother of James and John. She was not only a fellow disciple but also a financial contributor to Jesus’ ministry. As her husband owned a fishing license she had probably accumulated some wealth over the years that allowed her to do so. Early church history records that Mary, Jesus’ mother, and Salome were related and may have been sisters. If that is true, then Salome may have been Jesus’ aunt and James and John his cousins. And like Mary there is also the suggestion that Salome came from a priestly background as John her son was well known to the servants of Annas, the former High Priest (Chapter 26:36). This indicates John had been to Annas’ house in the past perhaps as a family relative? Like the other disciples, she believed that the Messianic age was about to begin which meant the saints from the past would soon be joining them at the great banquet in Jerusalem. And after hearing Jesus tell the disciples that they would sit on 12 thrones and judge Israel she boldly asks for her sons to receive preferential treatment. Then Salome, the mother of James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus with her sons and knelt down before him to make a special request. “Rabbi, we would like you to grant the request for what I am asking.” “What would you like me to do for you?” he asked. Salome replied, “Promise me that my two sons may sit next to you in your Kingdom – one on your right and the other on your left.” TJB 20:29-31
