- Title Of Nobility: King of Brittany
- LifeSketch: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gradlon Gradlon the Great (Gradlon Meur) was a semi-legendary 5th century "king" of Cornouaille who became the hero of many Breton folk stories. The most famous of these legends is the story of the sunken city of Ys. He is supposed to have been the son of Conan Meriadoc. «b»The legend Gradlon and Malgven«/b» According to some 19th-century legends, he was in love with a magician called Malgven. Gradlon had many ships he used to wage war against the faraway countries of the North. An outstanding strategist, he won most of the battles and pillaged the vanquished, amassing great wealth. One day, his sailors tired of fighting and refused to continue to lay siege to a castle. The sailors returned home and he remained alone in the North. When he was alone he saw a red-haired woman: Malgven, Queen of the North, standing in front of him. She told him, "I know you. You are courageous and skillful in fighting. My husband is old; his sword has rusted. You and I are going to kill him, then go to your country of Cornouaille." They killed the king of the North and went on Morvarc'h ("sea horse" in Breton), Malgven's magical horse. It was black, spit fire from its nostrils and was able to gallop on the sea. They caught up with Gradlon's vessels, but the approach of Morvarc'h caused the fleet to flee. «b»The return trip and the Dahut's birth«/b» Gradlon and Malgven remained long at sea, so Malgven gave birth to a daughter, Dahut. According to some versions of the story, giving birth killed the queen. According to other versions, she didn't die but, some time after the birth of Dahut, she asked Gradlon what he thought about Dahut. He responded "I already cherish her as I cherish you." Malgven announced that Dahut's face would keep the appearance of hers, so she would not be forgotten by him, because it was time for her to return to her world. She added that they would see an island shortly after, and Gradlon should let her go there; otherwise they could never see the earth again. Soon after, they saw an island and there Malgven was left alone. Shortly after, Gradlon arrived in Cornouaille with Dahut, but without Malgven. «b»Ys«/b» Later, Dahut had a key role in the story of Ys, a city built below sea level and protected by a gate that kept the sea out. Dahut turned the city into a place of sin and debauchery. One night she stole the key to the gate from her sleeping father and drunkenly opened the gate. Gradlon awoke and rescued his daughter from the drowning city on his magical horse, but her sins kept dragging them into the sea before he could reach land. In the end Saint Winwaloe told him to drop his daughter. She was swallowed by the sea, becoming a form of siren or morgen, luring men to destruction. Gradlon re-established his rule in Quimper, before eventually retiring as a hermit. «b»Descendants«/b» At Gradlon's death, his son Salomon the 1st succeeded him, then his grandson, Aldrien. Dahut appears again in the Arthurian legend of King Mark. «b»Historicity«/b» According to the sources, several historical Gradlons existed: Gradlon Meur is cited in a cartulary of Landévennec, but there is also a Gradlon Flam and Gradlon Plueneuor (Plonéour). They are generally classified as consul, which can be understood as the count - as the Latin texts translate the Breton title of mac'htiern by "tyrant". They would have most likely lived between the 5th and 9th centuries. In the Gallo-Roman era, the capital of Osismes - predecessors of Cornouailles, Trégorrois and Léonards - was Carhaix. And if there was a city on the Odet it was not yet Quimper, but a little downstream in the current Locmaria quarter.

- LifeSketch: Saint Judoc, Joyce, or otherwise known as Josse (Latin: Iudocus; traditionally c. 600 – 668 AD)[1] was a seventh-century Breton noble. Though he was never officially canonized, Saint Judoc is considered to be a saint.[2] Judoc was a son of Juthael, King of Brittany. He renounced his wealth and position to become a priest and lived alone for the rest of his lifetime[3] in the coastal forest near the mouth of the River Cache. Etymology The name Judoc, meaning "Lord", is the 14th century Breton version of Iudocus in Latin, Josse in French, Jost, Joost, or Joos in Dutch, and Joyce in English. The name Judoc was rarely used after the 14th century except in the Netherlands. Biography According to tradition, Judoc was the son of Juthael, King of Brittany, and the brother of Saint Judicael and Saint Winnoc.[4] In approximately 636, Judoc renounced his inheritance and wealth and embarked on a pilgrimage to Rome. He was ordained as a priest during this voyage and subsequently became a hermit in Ponthieu, Saint-Josse-sur-Mer, where he resided until his death. According to ancient folklore, his body was said to be incorruptible,[5] leaving his followers with the task of continually cutting his hair after death.[6] Veneration St. Judoc, as depicted in the Church of St. Christina in Ravensburg. Saint Judoc developed a local cultus. Built in the eighth century at the place where Judoc's shrine was kept, the Abbey of Saint-Josse was a small monastery situated on the site of his retreat. In 903, some monks of the abbey fled Norman raiders for England, where they bore Judoc's relics, which were enshrined in the newly built New Minster in Winchester.[6] To honor the event, feasts were held on the 9th of January.[1] The veneration of Judoc spread from France through the Low Countries, England, Germany, and Scandinavia. In these regions, variations of Josse, Joyce, Joos, Joost, and the diminutive Jocelyn,[7] became popular names for both men and women, and a number of chapels and churches were dedicated to him.[citation needed] The mal Saint-Josse was the term for an illness resulting from a snakebite, against which the saint's name was invoked by the fifteenth-century French poet Eustache Deschamps in an imprecatory ballade:[8] "...Du mau saint Leu, de l'esvertin, Du saint Josse et saint Matelin... soit maistre Mahieu confondus!".[9] According to Alban Butler, Charlemagne gave the abbey to Alcuin who turned it into a hostel for those crossing the English Channel. It later became a site of pilgrimage, especially popular with Flemish and Germans in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. La vie de Saint Josse was written in Old French verses by the poet and translator Pierre de Beauvais in the thirteenth century.[10] The Suaire de St-Josse, or "Shroud of Saint Judoc," is a rich, silk samite saddlecloth that was woven in northeastern Iran prior to 961. When Saint Judoc was reinterred in 1134, the shroud was used to wrap his bones.[11] The Louvre Museum currently houses his shroud. The abbey was closed in 1772, and subsequently sold and dismantled in 1789, leaving no traces of the buildings. The abbey church then became the parish church of the French commune of Saint-Josse. Cultural depictions Cultural depictions usually portray Judoc holding the pilgrim's staff. He is also shown with a crown at his feet, referring to his renunciation of his lands and fortune. In Austria, there is a depiction of Judoc on the mausoleum of Maximilian in Innsbruck. Judoc was most famously mentioned by Chaucer's Wife of Bath, who swears "by God and by Seint Joce [Saint Joyce]." This suggests that his name was often invoked in oaths.[6]

- Also known as: Boudicca
- Also known as: Boadicea
- Also known as: Bodicea Britain
- Title Of Nobility: Queen Boudica of the Iceni, 59, Gaul, Roman Empire
- LifeSketch: The History Files 59 - 61 Queen Boudicca (Boadicea) Wife. Led the uprising and later died by her own hand. Stirred up by imperial heavy-handedness, Boudicca (or Boudica) leads a powerful Celtic uprising in AD 60 involving the Iceni, the Trinovantes and other tribes. It results in the loss to the Romans of lower eastern Britain. After sacking and burning Camulodunum (Colchester), Londinium, and Verulamium (St Albans in the former Catuvellauni territory), the Celts are confronted by a fresh Roman army under Governor Gaius Suetonius Paulinus somewhere along Watling Street. Coming directly from warfare against the Deceangli, Roman military discipline and might proves unbeatable, the Celts are massacred and the rebellion is defeated. Boudicca's fate is unknown, but it is presumed that she commits suicide rather than allow herself to fall into Roman hands. To pacify the Iceni (or to reward a pro-Roman faction which did not join the uprising), the Roman city of Venta Icenorum is built (possibly over an Iceni town, although nothing has been found to prove this). It is located at modern Caistor St Edmund (otherwise known as Caistor-by-Norwich), immediately south of Norwich. Although perhaps meant to be an impressive town, it seems to be little more than a run-down outpost, with shoddy building quality away from the centre and plenty of empty plots (possibly for grazing or cultivation). Celtic roundhouses are even built near the walls, some in the second century AD, and a diagonal road leads out of the town (very unusual in Roman towns) to a Celtic temple to the north-east. It seems that the Iceni resign themselves to their fate and move into the new town, but they appear to be unprepared for urban life. The town apparently fails to a large extent, becoming a backwater. The once-important (and perhaps even great) Iceni tribe are relegated to complete unimportance, living a very unremarkable (and unremarked) existence on the edge of Roman Britain.

- LifeSketch: The Life Summary of Constantine Custennin Gorneu When King Constantine Custennin Gorneu Ab Cynfor , of Britain was born on 4 December 0370, in England, his father, Saint Cynfawr 'Synvor' Salomon I, King of Brittany, was 15 and his mother, Queen Flavia Junia verch Patricius Rusticus, was 15. He had at least 11 sons and 3 daughters with Ivoire verch Llancelod (Fictional). He died in 0443, in Cornwall, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom, at the age of 73. Constantine (/ˈkɒnstəntiːn/, Welsh: Cystennin, fl. 520–523) was a 6th-century king of Dumnonia in sub-Roman Britain, who was remembered in later British tradition as a legendary King of Britain. The only contemporary information about him comes from Gildas, who castigated him for various sins, including the murder of two "royal youths" inside a church. The historical Constantine is also known from the genealogies of the Dumnonian kings, and possibly inspired the tradition of Saint Constantine, a king-turned-monk venerated in Southwest Britain and elsewhere. When King Constantine (Custennin Gorneu) ap Cynfawr , of Britain was born on 4 December 0370, his father, Cynfawr 'Synvor' Salomon I, King of Brittany, was 15 and his mother, Flavia Junia verch Patricius Rusticus, was 15. He had at least 11 sons and 3 daughters with Ivoire verch Llancelod (Fictional). He died in 0443, in Cornwall, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom, at the age of 73.

- LifeSketch: Rud Hud Hudibras (Welsh: Rhun baladr bras) was a legendary king of the Britons as recounted by Geoffrey of Monmouth. He was the son of King Leil and ruled during a civil war. During the waning years of Leil's reign, the kingdom of the Britons became unstable, and civil war broke out. Rud Hud Hudibras became king after his father's death and reigned for 39 years, ending the civil war and restoring peace to the kingdom. During his reign, he founded Kaerreint, later renamed Canterbury by the Angles. He is also said to have founded Kaerguenit (Winchester) and Paladur Castle (Shaftesbury). He was succeeded by his son Bladud. Geoffrey places Rud Hud Hudibras' reign during the time Capys was king in Alba Longa and Haggai, Amos, Joel, and Azariah were prophesying in Israel. Haggai began his ministry around 520 BC, whilst Amos is said to have prophesied during the reigns of Uzziah of Judah and Jeroboam II, probably around 760 BC.

- Father: Edward I of ENGLAND
- Mother: Marguérite DE FRANCE Queen of England
- Birth: 1 JUN 1300, Caywood Castle, Brotherton, North Yorkshire, England
- Also known as: Thomas "of Brotherton" Plantagenet Prince of England; Earl of Norfolk
- Also known as: Earl Thomas Plantagenet
- Also known as: Prince Thomas Plantagenet
- Title Of Nobility: Earl of Norfolk
- LifeSketch: Thomas of Brotherton, 1st Earl of Norfolk (1 June 1300-4 August 1338), was the fifth son of King Edward I of England (1272-1307), and the eldest child by his second wife, Margaret of France, the daughter of King Philip III of France. He was, therefore, a younger half-brother of King Edward II (1307-1327) and a full brother of Edmund of Woodstock, 1st Earl of Kent. He occupied the office of Earl Marshal of England. «b»Early life«/b» Thomas of Brotherton was born 1 June 1300 at the manor house at Brotherton, Yorkshire, while his mother was on her way to Cawood, where her confinement was scheduled to take place. According to Hilton, Margaret was staying at Pontefract Castle and was following a hunt when she went into labour. The chronicler William Rishanger records that during the difficult delivery his mother prayed, as was the custom at the time, to Thomas Becket, and Thomas of Brotherton was thus named after the saint and his place of birth. King Edward I hastened to the queen and the newborn baby and had him presented with two cradles. His brother Edmund of Woodstock was born in the year after that. They were overseen by wet nurses until they were six years old. Like their parents, they learned to play chess and to ride horses. They were visited by nobles and their half-sister Mary of Woodstock, who was a nun. Their mother often accompanied their father on his campaigns to Scotland, but kept herself well-informed on their well-being. His father died when he was 7 years old. Thomas's half-brother Edward, became king of England, as "King Edward II", and Thomas was heir presumptive until his nephew, the future King Edward III, was born in 1312. The Earldom of Cornwall had been intended for Thomas, but his brother the King instead bestowed it upon his favourite, Piers Gaveston, in 1306. When Thomas was 10 years old, King Edward II assigned to him and his brother Edmund, the estates of Roger Bigod, 5th Earl of Norfolk, who had died without heirs in 1306. «b»Career «/b»In 1312, he was titled "Earl of Norfolk" and on 10 February 1316 he was created Earl Marshal. While his brother was away fighting in Scotland, he was left Keeper of England. He was known for his hot and violent temper. He was one of the many victims of the unchecked greed of the king's new favourite, Hugh Despenser the Younger and his father Hugh Despenser the Elder, who stole some of the young earl's lands. He allied himself with Queen Isabella and Roger Mortimer when they invaded England in 1326, and stood as one of the judges in the trials against both Despensers. When his nephew Edward III reached his majority and took the government into his own hands Thomas became one of his principal advisors. It was in the capacity of Lord Marshal that he commanded the right wing of the English army at the Battle of Halidon Hill on 19 July 1333. He died about 20 September 1338, and was buried in the choir of the Abbey of Bury St Edmunds. He was succeeded by his daughter, Margaret, as Countess of Norfolk. She was later created Duchess of Norfolk for life in 1397. As a son of Edward I of England, he was entitled to bear the coat of arms of the Kingdom of England, differenced by a label argent of three points. «b»Marriages and issue«/b» He married firstly, before 8 January 1326, Alice de Hales (d. before 12 October 1330), daughter of Sir Roger de Hales of Hales Hall in Loddon in Roughton, Norfolk, a coroner, by his wife, Alice, by whom he had a son and two daughters: 1.) Edward of Norfolk, who married Beatrice de Mortimer, daughter of Roger de Mortimer, 1st Earl of March, but died without issue before 9 August 1334. 2.) Margaret, Duchess of Norfolk, who married firstly John Segrave, 4th Baron Segrave, and secondly Sir Walter Manny. 3.) Alice of Norfolk, who married Edward Montagu, 1st Baron Montagu. His wife Alice died by October 1330, when a chantry was founded for her soul in Bosham, Sussex. He married secondly, before 4 April 1336, Mary de Brewes (died 11 June 1362), widow of Sir Ralph de Cobham, (d. 5 February 1326), and daughter of Sir Peter de Brewes (d. before 7 February 1312) of Tetbury, Gloucestershire, by Agnes de Clifford (d. before 1332), by whom he had no surviving issue.

- Birth: ABT 105 BC, Rome, Roman Republic
- LifeSketch: Marcus Junius Brutus (died 77 BC) was a tribune of the Roman Republic in 83 BC[1] and the founder of the colony in Capua.[2] He was an associate of Marcus Aemilius Lepidus, who led a revolt against the senate after the death of Sulla. He was captured by Pompey and treacherously executed.[3] He was the father of his homonymous son, who assassinated Julius Caesar in 44.[4] Power struggle and death In 78 BC, Brutus was stationed as a commander in Cisalpine Gaul.[4] He was allied with Marcus Aemilius Lepidus, who as consul was agitating against Sulla's constitutional settlement and opposed a state funeral for the dictator after his death.[5] He also "took up the cause of those who had lost their civil or political rights under Sulla's reforms".[4] Lepidus turned to violence and raised an army against his consular colleague Quintus Lutatius Catulus when Catulus successfully blocked constitutional reform.[5] Lepidus' army was defeated outside of Rome. Brutus took his own forces to Mutina, where he defended the stronghold against Pompey, who had been sent by the senate to dislodge him.[6] He withstood Pompey's attacks for some time, but was eventually surrendered – his troops either turned on him or he surrendered of his own accord – after which he was allowed to retire to the town of Regium Lepidi[citation needed], where he was murdered by Pompey's close ally Geminius. According to Plutarch, 'For Brutus, whether he himself betrayed his army, or whether his army changed sides and betrayed him, put himself in the hands of Pompey, and receiving an escort of horsemen, retired to a little town upon the Po. Here, after a single day had passed, he was slain by Geminius, who was sent by Pompey to do the deed.'[7] Pompey forwarded to Rome the news of his surrender and execution. The senate blamed Pompey for the perfidious act.[8][9][10] John Leach in his biography of Pompey defends his subject by arguing that Brutus "presumably began to whip up further support for Lepidus (the name of the town suggests that there were hereditary clients of his there)" and so Pompey was "forced" to send Geminius to Regium Lepidi to recapture and execute him.[11][verification needed] Brutus is quoted by Cicero, who says he was well skilled in public and private law.[12] Family He was the first husband to Servilia, the elder half-sister of Cato the Younger. His son by Servilia is the Marcus Junius Brutus who was one of the chief assassins of Julius Caesar.
