- LifeSketch: Lucius Cornelius Scipio Asiagenus, later known as Scipio Asiaticus, was a general and statesman of the Roman Republic. He was the son of Publius Cornelius Scipio and the younger brother of Scipio Africanus. He was elected consul in 190 BC, and later that year led (with his brother) the Roman forces to victory at the Battle of Magnesia. Although his career may be eclipsed by the shadow of his elder brother, Lucius's life is noteworthy in several respects. Lucius belonged to the patrician gens Cornelia, one of the most important gentes of the Republic, which counted more consulships than any other. He was the son of Publius, the consul of 218 who died against the Carthaginians at the Battle of the Upper Baetis in 211, and Pomponia, the daughter of Manius Pomponius Matho, consul in 233. Lucius also had an elder brother, Publius, better known as Scipio Africanus, who was the leading man of his generation and the vanquisher of Hannibal at the Battle of Zama in 202. Lucius was very close to his brother throughout his career, but had a conflicting relationship with his cousin Scipio Nasica since both of them were born circa 228, and therefore fought for the same magistracies at each stage of their cursus honorum. Lucius's wife is not known. Lucius served under his brother in Spain during the Second Punic War, defeating the Carthaginian commander Larus in a famous duel, and in 208 BC took a town on his own. In 206 BC, he was sent to the Senate with news of the victory in Spain. He was curule aedile in 195 BC, and praetor assigned to Sicily in 193 BC, helped by the influence of his brother. He was a candidate for consul in 191 BC, but lost to his first cousin Publius Cornelius Scipio Nasica. He was finally elected consul in 190 BC with his co-consul being his brother's old second-in-command Gaius Laelius. According to Smith, the senate had not much confidence in his abilities, and it was only through the offer of his brother Africanus to accompany him as a legate that he obtained the province of Greece and the conduct of the war against Antiochus. He asserted himself against his brother by refusing the peace negotiated with the Aetolians by the latter. However, Publius insisted that as supreme commander at Magnesia Lucius should receive full credit for the victory over Antiochus. Upon his return to Rome, he celebrated a triumph (189 BC) and requested the title "Asiaticus" to signify his conquest of Western Asia Minor. According to some biblical commentators, Asiaticus is the "commander" referred to in Daniel 11:18, where it says that "a commander will put an end to his insolence" (NIV). Towards the end of his brother's life, Lucius was accused of misappropriating some of the funds collected from Antiochus as an indemnity. Publius, then Princeps Senatus, was outraged, going so far as to destroy the campaign's financial records while speaking in the Senate, as an act of defiance. After his brother's death (c. 183 BC), Lucius was imprisoned for this alleged theft. He was eventually pardoned by the tribune Tiberius Gracchus, although he was forced to sell his property and pay the state a lump sum. Roman historians report that he refused to accept any gifts or loans from his friends to pay the penalty. During his brother's lifetime in 185 BC, Lucius celebrated with great splendor the games which he had vowed in his war with Antiochus. Valerius of Antium related that he obtained the necessary money during an embassy on which he was sent after his condemnation, to settle the disputes between the kings Antiochus and Eumenes. He was a candidate for the censorship in 184 BC, but was defeated by an old enemy of his family, M. Porcius Cato, who deprived Lucius of his Public Horse at the review of the equites. Lucius had descendants, the Cornelii Scipiones Asiatici, the last of whom was the consul Lucius Cornelius Scipio Asiaticus who had an adoptive son. This son passed into obscurity after 82 BC.

- Father: Lucius CORNELIUS SCIPIO
- LifeSketch: Publius Cornelius Scipio was a general and statesman of the Roman Republic and the father of Scipio Africanus. A member of the Scipio stirps of the Cornelia gens, he served as consul in 218 BC, the first year of the Second Punic War. He sailed with his army from Pisa with the intention of confronting Hannibal in Hispania. Stopping at Massalia (today Marseille) to replenish his supplies, he was shocked to discover that Hannibal's army had moved from Hispania and was crossing the Rhône. Scipio disembarked his army and marched to confront Hannibal, who, by now, had moved on. Returning to the fleet, he entrusted the command of his army to his brother Gnaeus Cornelius Scipio Calvus and sent him off to Hispania to carry on with the originally intended mission. Scipio returned to Italy to take command of the troops fighting in Cisalpine Gaul. On his return to Italy, he advanced at once to meet Hannibal. In a sharp cavalry engagement near the Ticinus, a tributary of the Po river, he was defeated and severely wounded. In December of the same year, he again witnessed the complete defeat of the Roman army at the Trebia, when his fellow consul Tiberius Sempronius Longus allegedly insisted on fighting against his advice. Despite the military defeats, he still retained the confidence of the Roman people; his term of command was extended and the following year found him in Hispania with his brother Calvus, winning victories over the Carthaginians and strengthening Rome's position in the Iberian peninsula. He continued the Iberian campaigns until 211, when he was killed during the defeat of his army at the upper Baetis river by the Carthaginians and their Iberian allies under Indibilis and Mandonius. That same year, Calvus and his army were destroyed at Ilorci near Carthago Nova. The details of these campaigns are not completely known, but it seems that the ultimate defeat and death of the two Scipiones was due to the desertion of the Celtiberians, who were bribed by Hasdrubal Barca, Hannibal's brother. The son of Lucius Cornelius Scipio, he was the father of Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus (the elder), and of Lucius Cornelius Scipio Asiaticus.

- LifeSketch: “Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013): “RICHARD OF ENGLAND, Knt., Earl of Cornwall, Count of Poitou, Lieutenant of Guienne, 1226-7, Keeper of Castle and Honour of Wallingford, 1230-1, Lord of the Manor, Castle, and Honour of Knaresborough, 1235, Lord of the Manor and Castle of Lideford, 1239, Commander-in-Chief of the Crusaders, 12/10 1, Privy Councillor, 1253, Joint Guardian of England, 1253, 2nd son, born at Winchester Castle 5 Jan. 1209. He was knighted by his brother, King Henry III, 2 Feb. 1224/5. He was granted the honour of Launceston, Cornwall in 1225 and the honour of Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire in 1229. He fought for his brother in Brittany in 1230. He married (1st) at Fawley, Buckinghamshire 30 March 1231 ISABEL MARSHAL, widow of Gilbert de Clare, 4th Earl of Gloucester, 5th Earl of Hertford [see CLARE 6], and 2nd daughter of William Marshal, Knt., 4th Earl of Pembroke (or Striguil), hereditary Master Marshal, by Isabel, daughter of Richard Fitz Gilbert (nicknamed Strongbow), 2nd Earl of Pembroke (or Striguil) [see MARSHAL 3 for her ancestry]. She was born at Pembroke Castle 9 October 1200. They had four children (see below). He was granted the borough of Wilton, Wiltshire by his brother, King Henry III, on the occasion of his marriage. In 1232-3 he fought in Wales against Llywelyn ap Iorwerth. In 1237 he openly rebuked his brother the king for his greed and maladmininistration. By March 1233 he had driven Llywelyn back and strongly fortified Radnor Castle. He was on an embassy to Emperor Frederick in 1237. His wife, Isabel, died testate at Berkharnpstead, Hertfordshire in childbed of jaundice 17 Jan. 1239/40. Her body was buried at Beaulieu Abbey, Hampshire, her bowels went to Missenden, and her heart was sent to Tewkesbury Abbey for burial in her 1st husband's grave. In 1240 he left for the Holy Land on crusade, in the company of a large number of English knights and nobles. In 1241 he negotiated a treaty with the sultan of Krak, by which many French captives were restored to liberty. He fought in Poitou in 1242-3. He married (2nd) at Westminster Abbey 23 Nov. 1243 (by contract dated 17 July 1242) SANCHE (or SANCHIA, SENCHIA) OF PROVENCE, 3rd daughter and co-heiress of Raymond Berenger V, Count and Marquis of Provence, Count of Forcalquier, by Beatrice, daughter of Thomas (or Tommaso) 1, Count of Savoy, Marquis in Italy. She was the sister of Eleanor of Provence, wife of his brother, King Henry III of England [see ENGLAND 6]. She was born about 1225 at Aix-en-Provence. They had two sons (see below). In Dec. 1243 the king demanded a written renunciation of any rights that Richard might possess in Ireland or Gascony, together with an explicit disclaimer of the award that had been made at Saintes. In return, Richard was confirmed in possession of Cornwall and of the honours of Wallingford and Eye. In 1244 he negotiated a treaty with Scotland and sat on the committee to investigate baronial grievances against the crown. The same year he was granted the honour of Bradninch, Devon. In 1245 he allowed his nephew the Welsh rebel, Dafydd ap Llywelyn, to take shelter at Tintagel Castle in Cornwall. In 1246, together with King Henry III, he sought unsuccessfully to oppose the efforts of Charles of Anjou, husband of Sanche's younger sister, Beatrice, to claim the entire dominion of Count Raymond Berengar V of Provence. He served as principal governor of the royal mint between 1247 and 1258, during which period he organized the first complete recoinage since 1180. In 1247 he presented to the churches of Arnbrosden, Horspath, and Brightwell. He was Joint Plenipotentiary to France and Ambassador to Pope Innocent IV in 1250. In 1252 he determined the amount of Simon de Montfort's expenses while lieutenant in Gascony. He served as Regent of England in 1253-4, 1264, and de facto 1270-2. He was elected King of the Romans (also styled King of Almain) 13 Jan. 1256/7, and was crowned at Aachen 17 May 1257. He failed to establish his authority in Germany, however, was soon dispossessed, and returned to England in Jan. 1259. In 1260 he mediated between the Earl of Gloucester and the Lord Edward and the king. In April 1261 he was elected senator of Rome for life, a purely honorary title which he made no attempt to exercise in person, and in which he was subsequently supplanted by Charles of Anjou. His wife, Sanche (or Sanchia), died at Berkharnpstead, Hertfordshire 9 Nov. 1261. In 1263 he secured a temporary truce after war had broken out between his brother the king and the English barons. In 1264, when conflict became inevitable, he supported his brother. He was taken prisoner with his brother at the Battle of Lewes 14 May 1264. After the Battle of Evesham 4 August 1265, he was released and his lands restored. He married (3rd) at Kaiserslautern, Germany 16 June 1269 BEATRICE DE FALKENBURG (or FAUQUEMONT), daughter of Dietrich II de Falkenburg, seigneur of Montjoye, by Berta, daughter of Walrarn of Limburg, seigneur of Montjoye. They had no issue. By an unknown mistress (or mistresses), he had several illegitimate children, including three sons, Philip (clerk), Richard, Knt., and Walter, Knt., and one daughter, Joan. He presented to the church of St. Stithian's, Cornwall in 1268. In 1270 he purchased from Roger de Vautort the honour of Trematon, Cornwall, consisting of 60-1/2 knights' fees, including the Castle and manor of Trematon, Cornwall and the manor and advowson of Calstock, Cornwall. RICHARD, King of the Romans, Earl of Cornwall, died testate at Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire 2 (or 3) April 1272, and was buried with his 2nd wife, Sanche, at Hailes Abbey, Gloucestershire, his heart being interred in the choir of the Church of the Grey Friars, Oxford. His widow, Beatrice, died testate 17 October 1277, and was buried before the high altar at the Church of the Grey Friars, Oxford.

- Father: Lucius Aurelius Cotta AURELIUS
- Mother: Unknown Spouse of Lucius Aurelius Cotta AURELIUS
- Birth: 124 BC
- Occupation: Roman statesman, orator, priest, and Academic Skeptic
- Title Of Nobility: Consul of Rome
- LifeSketch: Gaius Aurelius Cotta (124–73 BC) was a Roman statesman, orator, priest, and Academic Skeptic; he is not to be confused with Gaius Aurelius Cotta who was twice Consul. Born in 124 BC, he was the uncle to Julius Caesar through Caesar's mother, Aurelia. In 92 BC he defended his uncle Publius Rutilius Rufus, who had been unjustly accused of extortion in Asia. He was on intimate terms with the tribune Marcus Livius Drusus, who was murdered in 91 BC, and in the same year was an unsuccessful candidate for the tribunate. Shortly afterwards he was prosecuted under the lex Varia, the law proposed by Quintus Varius Severus which was directed against all who had in any way supported the Italians against Rome, and, in order to avoid condemnation, went into voluntary exile. He did not return until 82 BC, during the dictatorship of Lucius Cornelius Sulla. In 75 BC he was consul, and excited the hostility of the optimates by carrying a law that abolished the Sullan disqualification of the tribunes of the plebs from holding higher magistracies; another law de judiciis privatis, of which nothing is known, was abrogated by his brother Lucius Cotta. Cotta obtained the province of Gaul, and was granted a triumph for some victory of which we possess no details; but on the very day before its celebration an old wound broke out, and he was injured suddenly. According to Cicero, Publius Sulpicius Rufus and Cotta were the best speakers of the young men of their time. Physically incapable of rising to passionate heights of oratory, Cotta's successes were chiefly due to his searching investigation of facts; he kept strictly to the essentials of the case and avoided all irrelevant digressions. His style was pure and simple. He is introduced by Cicero as an interlocutor in the De Oratore and De Natura Deorum (iii.), as a supporter of the principles of the New Academy. The fragments of Sallust contain the substance of a speech delivered by Cotta in order to calm the popular anger at a deficient corn supply

- Father: Lucius Aurelius COTTA
- Mother: Rutilia Rufa DIROMA
- Birth: 21 MAY 120 BC, Rome, Roma, Lazio, Italy
- LifeSketch: Aurelia (c. 120 – July 31, 54 BC) was the mother of Roman dictator Julius Caesar. Aurelia was a daughter of Rutilia and Lucius Aurelius Cotta or his brother, Marcus Aurelius Cotta. Her father was consul in 119 BC and her paternal grandfather of the same name was consul in 144 BC. The family of the Aurelii Cottae was prominent during the Roman Republican era. Her mother Rutilia, was a member of the gens Rutilia. They were of consular rank. Publius Rutilius Rufus was her maternal uncle. Three of her brothers were consuls: Gaius Aurelius Cotta in 75 BC, Marcus Aurelius Cotta in 74 BC and Lucius Aurelius Cotta in 65 BC. Aurelia married a praetor Gaius Julius Caesar. Her husband died 85 – 84 BC. Their children were: . Julia Major (102 - ? BC), wife of Pinarius and grandmother of Lucius Pinarius; . Julia Minor (101 – 51 BC), wife of Marcus Atius and grandmother of emperor Augustus; . Gaius Julius Caesar (100 – 44 BC), the Dictator perpetuo The historian Tacitus considered her an ideal Roman matron and thought highly of her, because she offered her children the best opportunities of education. Plutarch described her as a woman of discretion. Highly intelligent, independent and renowned for her beauty and common sense, Aurelia was held in high regard throughout Rome. Aurelia and her family were very influential in her son’s upbringing and security. Her husband, the elder Gaius Caesar, was often away, so the task of raising their son fell mostly on Aurelia's shoulders. When the younger Caesar was about 18, he was ordered by the then dictator of Rome, Lucius Cornelius Sulla, to divorce his young wife Cornelia Cinna, daughter of Lucius Cornelius Cinna who had supported Sulla's archenemy Marius. Young Caesar firmly refused, and by so doing, put himself at great risk from Sulla. Aurelia became involved in the petition to save her son, defending him along with her brother Gaius Cotta. After Cornelia's death in childbirth, Aurelia raised her young granddaughter Julia in her stead and presided as mistress over her son's households. Caesar subsequently married Pompeia Sulla, granddaughter of Sulla. In 62 BC, during the Bona Dea festival held at Caesar’s house, one of Cornelia's maid discovered that Publius Clodius had infiltrated the house while disguising as a woman, in order to start or continue an affair with her second daughter-in-law Pompeia. The two may have had certain improper relations before, but was subdued by Aurelia's close watch upon the women's residence. Clodius was later charged with the crime of sacrilege by Lucius Lentulus since his trespass caused the interruption of the sacrifice. Aurelia later appeared as a witness during the trial, along with Julia, testifying that she had ordered Clodius to leave.
